TOO MUCH CONTROL?

While most students and staff are absolutely thrilled about the finished construction of the new school, the new and improved security system has sprung various levels of interest and discussion. Going from one working security camera last year to approximately 70 cameras this year alone has generated a whirlpool of different opinions throughout the school.

The majority of students believe the new security system takes away from the coziness of the old school, but that could easily be explained by the official demolition of the pods. However, we believe a strict security system is necessary in this period of time. Unfortunately because of the rising number of school shootings (especially within this past year alone), schools do not hesitate to put protection over comfort. We would rather feel safe at school than constantly worry about our safety.

Principal Curtis Stevens said the extent of the new security system includes 70 cameras as mentioned, two entrances to be buzzed through and a continuation of the Security Resource Officer (SRO) Program. With all of these additions, plus a brand new $42 million school, this is a huge change to comprehend.

Again, it all ties back to safety. Principal Stevens admits these advancements are in place because of influential shootings such as Columbine in 1999 and Sandy Hook in 2012. According to Officer Dani Lemon, the new security system is a great addition.

Principal Stevens has tried his best to make the new school as homey as possible with the new commons area, collaborative areas and coffee bar. Stevens says he hopes the school does not resemble a prison. He states that the most vital part of any security system is the notification and honesty of the students.

NEW YEAR, NEW TEACHERS

Orlando Carmona teaches business at South High, but before coming to South he taught math at Lakewood Middle School for five years. Carmona said that his favorite part about teaching is the interactions with students.

BONUS FACT: Expecting a son in late December.

Lesa Landauer teaches Special Education students at South High. Landauer said that she grew up with teachers and always had a passion to work with others. Before teaching at South High she taught for 27 years at South Middle.

BONUS FACT: Has a decorative soap collection.

Scott McCready teaches Industrial Arts, but before teaching he was in the fire service for 24 years and a paramedic for 22 years.

He also worked in construction and remodeled houses. McCready said that things would go from 0-100 when in the fire service.

BONUS FACT: Graduated from Central.

Danna Gordon wanted to become a counselor because of everyone who inspired her in school. “I knew that I wanted to inspire other students,” Gordon said.

BONUS FACT: Loves to binge watch Netflix shows, but cannot commit to finishing them.

Rachel Larson teaches Spanish, and English is her second language.

Larson said she has been teaching since she was an adult and always knew that she wanted to be a teacher.

BONUS FACT: Loves to paint and draw.

Kiley Meyer taught fourth grade for six years at Cottonwood Elementary.

Meyer now teachers Human Services, Lifespan and Parenting classes at South. “I knew I wanted to grow up and be a teacher because I had a very inspiring fifth grade teacher,” Meyer said.

BONUS FACT: Loves Taylor Swift.

Last fall Kristen Hanks student taught math with Jennifer Farrell. “I wanted to become a teacher to help kids learn, grow and make a difference in their lives,” Hanks said.

BONUS FACT: Pink starbursts are her favorite.

Jocelyn Lytton taught math at Lakewood Middle School and Mead High School before coming to South. “I love learning and wanted to help kids love to learn as well,” Lytton said.

BONUS FACT: Has two little girls.

Tyler Slade teaches in the business department.

He said that his favorite part about teaching is creating relationships with students.

Slade wanted to become a teacher because he wanted to provide opportunities for students, and teaching allows him to do that.

BONUS FACT: Once had cornrows.

Before coming to South High, Laura Ketterman was a paraprofessional for six years and a case manager for 10 years in Dickinson County schools. Ketterman said she wanted to become a teacher because she loves to help others.

She now works in the Character Development room.

BONUS FACT: Loves the ocean.

Juan Maldonado student taught at Central High School last year, but this is his first year teaching English. “Most of my mentors were teachers in high school and college.

I wanted to become one of those people,” Maldonado said.

BONUS FACT: Still loves breaking kids’ ankles at soccer practice, it keeps him young.

Before coming to South, Joe Turner taught for two years at Manhattan High and two years as a graduate teaching assistant. Turner now teaches English. “My favorite part about teaching is learning about students’ academic and life goals,” Turner said.

BONUS FACT: Plays the guitar really loud at home.

Before construction began, the need for change was evident to staff, community members and students.

“I was a little bit spoiled in the old building because my office was the last thing to get touched by construction, but you would walk into that office and realize, okay this isn’t the rest of South High, [south] is the ceilings that we can’t clean, and loud noise,” Principal Curtis Stevens said.

Construction began in 2015 and took place in sections in order to get the most use out of funding.

The most memorable part of years of construction, according to students and staff, is the demolition of over half of the old building, leaving behind the 200 and 300 pods.

Students traveled through the new and old building by crossing a tunnel as fast as they could.

“My shout out to the students of South High was the fact that we went through that tunnel with minimal amount of problems. It’s a testament to students and how they handled that,” Stevens said.

Changes

Following the chaotic years of construction, students and staff were able to experience navigating through a brand new school.

“Honestly I do feel better about coming to school, it’s just a lot easier,” Xavier Magallanes-Rivas (’19) said.

The school’s design was based on a combination of a mall and airport, providing a practical environment.

“There’s advantages and disadvantages to every design,” Stevens said.

Designing the school required effort and opinions from a variety of people.

The final design seems to fit

the needs of every one who spends their daily life at the school.

Despite the multiple intricate details, the school is based around building an academic environment.

“[Students] have always been respectful, but I think they have become even more respectful because of the business environment,” science teacher Jane Bradbury said.

The effects of a new school with windows and sound control is evident among students and staff.

“I think it’s really just energizing after those years of construction to have a new space with windows and a door, I have all kinds of work space and it’s really exciting,” social studies teacher Collin Carlson said.

The freshman class is also able to easily transition into a modern school with many features.

“I like the new school because I get to see all my friends, but we’re more spread out,” Emmy Latham (’22) said.

Overall, the new school is something that Salina can be proud of.

Stevens, along with other members of the community, put in hours and hours of effort in order to make the school into a great place for every student.

“Some kids come to us and maybe they’re not having a good experience outside of school and if we can make school great. I want to do that,”Stevens said.

Students are now able to go from class to class with ease instead of tripping through other teachers rooms.

The different features also allows friend groups to spread out instead of crowding around the commons.

The new school is vibrant, unique and clean. This project took cooperation from every member of the school and the outcome is incredible according to staff and students.

the group aims to do. STUCO plans out most of the pep rallies throughout the year and picks themes for spirit week days.

“We try to make [pep rallies] interesting and we want to make sure everyone feels welcome,” Sophomore Class President Reese Altman said.

STUCO’s reach goes beyond the confines of the building, too.

The group also works on community service projects such as the angel tree during Christmas and the macaroni and cheese drive last year.

And while STUCO works to improve the student body, the students involved are also working to prepare for their futures.

“STUCO has taught me how to work with people who have completely different ideas than I do,” STUCO President Taylor Davison (’19) said.

Chamberlain agrees with Davison.

“Students who are involved in STUCO get to learn valuable leadership skills, and they work very, very hard to try to make South High a better place.”

Freshman Class

When fall rolls around and everyone is focused on getting acquainted to a new school year, there is one group of students who are already hard at work: Student Council.

Student Council, or STUCO as it is commonly referred to, consists of a group of elected officials, representatives and sponsors Nikki Chamberlain and Melanie Hammond.

Hammond has been a sponsor for six years and Chamberlain for three.

“I became a sponsor because I love South High School and felt like being apart of STUCO was a way to work with students to make the school better,” Chamberlain said.

The busiest time of the year for STUCO is now, when they are focused on planning out Homecoming festivities.

“We’re in charge of every aspect of Homecoming, from the parade to the coronation to the dance,” Chamberlain said.

FIRST DOWN TO TOUChdown

As the returning seniors come back to play, they are looking forward to a rewarding new season.

“We have 24 girls out for the team. We have a very deep and talented team this year that is off to a great start, and I'm excited to see what they can accomplish this season,” Coach Ryan Stuart said.

As the new players come in, there are many upperclassmen they look up to this season.

“I feel we have a pretty strong group of upperclassmen. Not only are they strong tennis players, but they are solid in the classroom and provide good leadership for our freshman players,” Stuart said.

Upperclassman Sydney McAdoo (’19) is a twotime returning state qualifier and ready to take on the season.

“I try to play as much as I can so I take lessons, have group at the pines, Genesis (Health Club) and I play in tournaments over the summer and some in the winter,” McAdoo said.

As this year's season starts, each player is eager to try their best and enjoy their season with the seniors.

As the football season begins, players are preparing to make this year better than ever.

“Every year is a new season and these guys work hard during the off-season,” Head Coach Sam Sellers said. “They are getting more and more talented as the year goes on.”

For some players, this is their last year playing for the Cougars. As the class of 2019 begins their final season on the field, they are ready to make this season count.

“We want to work as a team and get better together. Improve everyday,” Lanndon Bowles (’19) said.

Many seniors show leadership and are looked up to by underclassmen. They have a good attitude and work hard all year to improve.

“I probably look up to Isaac Mitchell because he is a hard worker, but is still cool to hang out with outside of school. He has a contagious mentality,” quarterback Terran Galloway (’21) said.

After a loss at Campus last weekend, the team is 0-4 and face Derby on the road tonight.

“McPherson exposed them to what they needed to work on and now we just have to put in the work to fix those things,” Sellers said.

The boys have a long season ahead of them, but they are prepared for what is in store.

As the season moves on, they have their eyes on the prize and are ready to have a good year.

Sarah Schrage (’21), along with her other team mates, have high hopes for the season to come.

“What keeps me motivated when I am not wanting to run is knowing, the sooner I finish the faster I get to cheer on my team mates,” Schrage said.

Schrage was an alternate for state last year but she is more motivated than ever to qualify this year.

For some students cross country acts as conditioning for other sports such as: basketball, swimming, track and other various sports.

Brandon Rectenwald (’19) said “what keeps me motivated is the physical shape I will be in by the end of the season.”

Rectenwald has qualified for state cross country for the last three years and plans to do continue his streak this year.

The team’s only meet in Salina is Saturday, Oct. 6 with both junior varsity and varisty boys and girls running at Bill Burke Park.

Putting in effortS

With seven returning golfers, girls golf has high hopes for the season.

“It’s too early in the season to tell how we will do, but I have a feeling that we can be more competitive this season,” Coach Kaylee Hurley said.

A new face to the team, Zoey Norton (’22) placed eighth overall at the Hays tournament and first out of the freshmen who competed.

“My goal for this season is to hopefully stay on varsity and to qualify to state,” Norton said.

Norton also is excited she got her driver worked out over the summer and is ready to play this season

Tatum Forrester (’19) is the only returning golfer who qualified for state last year.

“I’m hoping to qualify for state this year again. I will prepare to do so by working on my short game because that can really make or break someone’s score,” Forrester said.

With the mental challenges of golf, Forrester and her team hope to make this season one to remember.

A NEW HOPE

Feeling optimistic about the upcoming season, new Head Coach Rose Wittman is working to turn the program around.

After coaching at South Middle for two years and volunteering to run the volleyball summer league this past summer, Wittman knows the girls on the team and their work ethic. The girls also know her expectations already and are excited for what is to come.

“Having (Wittman) brings a new hope to the team,” Khiley Davis (’19) said.

Along with Wittman, new assistant coaches Mary Pat Weese, Arnold Schmidtberger and Danna Gordan were hired. Wittman and Weese ran the summer league together and were a package deal when taking the jobs for the school. Weese is a retired South High Physical Education teacher and former head coach of the team.

After Wittman was hired this summer, she asked Schmidtberger if he would want to take the job with her and Weese. Then Gordan, a new counselor, was interesting in coaching as well.

With the well known and experienced coaches this year, Wittman is looking to see progress for the future of the program.

“I just want to see them get better everyday,” Wittman said.

As of Sept. 24 the team was 9-11, surpasses wins from last year’s 6-33 record. The team’s next home match is Oct. 2.

“Wittman gets us excited, she’s looking to turn the program around and give us more success,” Davis said.

A new look on the boys soccer program is making players excited. Along with new Head Coach Trey Crow, the boys soccer team also has new Assistant Coach Juan Maldonado.

After coaching for 16 years, Crow has a good idea about what he is doing for the boys soccer program.

He wants the boys to find their identity and play together they way they have the capability to.

“Even with Crow as the new coach, we all still play the same together,” Eduardo Picaso (’20) said.

The team has many talents and are gifted, but learning how to communicate and work together is a hurdle they have jump over.

Crow was an assistant for the boys soccer team last year and with his prior work with the tram help his understanding of where the boys are and their experience on the pitch. Crow is also the girls soccer head coach.

The team is currently 5-4 in the AVCTL as of Sept.

24, not including two games earlier this week.

Crow plans to be the head coach and work his way to making it to the state tournament.

“I’m hoping I can make an impact on the guys and get them to the level of play they can be.”.

Face painting, bands playing, screaming in your ear. Football season is back and kids in skirts are out again to cheer.

Over a decade ago, a student-led spirit group was formed.

Although the intentions and traditions of Kilt Krew may have changed over the years, the kilts (not skirts) have never gone away.

Kilt Krew is led by seniors, except for the junior in charge of passing along the traditions and picking out the new Kilt Krew.

Last year Ivan Pike (’19) was the junior chosen to take over Kilt Krew as a senior.

“I felt like it was me and [the seniors] whenever we would hang out, but this year we are all closer,” Pike said.

This year Lauren Raubenstine (’20) is the chosen junior for Kilt Krew. She will be in charge of passing along the tradition and keeping Kilt Krew alive for more decades to come.

“I was excited I got picked because I enjoy going to all the games, and I’m excited to be able to do it two years in a row,” Raubenstine said.

own without funding. They fundraise to pay for tailgate food, body paint, costumes and any other props for game themes.

Although Kilt Krew is not funded by the school, they must still work with the administration to get game themes approved and they occasionally work with STUCO to match spirit week themes and help encourage school spirit.

“[Our goal is] to get underclassmen to come to more games,” Kailey Martinez (’19) said.

As of now, Kilt Krew only goes to football games, but they want to go to more basketball games. Pike said that with the group being led completely by students, they would have a hard time making it to every sports game.

Pike suggested that in order to be chosen to be in Krew Krew a student should go to most of the football games and be involved in school spirit, and should also show leadership, independence and confidence.

Work questions out of order, spending too much time on the hardest problems means you may rush through the easiest.

Instead of working questions in order, ask yourself whether a question is a do now, later, or never.

Forget the right answer find the wrong ones. Multiple-choice tests offer one great advantage: they provide the correct answer right there on the page. ACT hides the correct answer behind wrong ones, but when you cross off just one or two wrong answers, the correct answer can become more obvious.

As juniors and seniors, you might be stressed and wondering what you want to do after high school. Many students already attend Salina Area Technical College during high school and others have their eyes set on a college, but how exactly do you get to that mindset?

There is the SAT and the ACT, but which one benefits you the most? The answers lie with senior counselor Amy Wagner.

“Usually the SATs are not taken by many and with the ACTs you don't get the score you want the first time and should take it more than once,” Wagner said.

For seniors there is also the advantage of having Free Application for Federal Student Aid, also known as FAFSA.

“All students should look into it. Even students with scholarships, there are lots of opportunities,” Wagner said.

This information is important for seniors, but juniors can seek help from counselor Jim Allen

“It's never too early to take the exams. Juniors should take it at least once during their junior year and then their senior year,” Allen said.

However which one is more important, the ACTs or the SATs?

“The ACT is usually for the midwest and the SAT is for the east and west coast, but most colleges accept both,” Allen said.

The best way to get ready is use the Method Test Prep in Career Cruising. Hopefully with this information one can be more prepared for this upcoming testing season.

Karter

Student races during summer following dads’ footsteps

Senior Karter Granzella is known throughout the school as not only a varsity football starter, but also as “401k.”

401k is Granzella’s racing name. Since he was a little kid, he has wanted it as his racing name.

He also says that it gives the old people a laugh.

Before Granzella raced, his dad also raced.

“My dad raced for 22 years and he quit in 2016. Then we thought of the idea of me racing, but we did not start until the summer of 2018,” Granzella said.

His mom was not so fond of the idea, though.

“My mom was very against me racing, and we kept it a secret from her for awhile while we bought parts without telling her,” Granzella said.

Ultimately she was okay with it, but only after Granzella bought a $500 neck protector.

The biggest supporters of his racing are his friends. When he would race at the speedway most

“I like the women and left turns,” Granzella said.

This past summer Granzella only raced in four races, and the highest he finished was sixth. Next year will be his rookie season, and he plans on going to race in Hays and possibly Nebraska.

The future of 401k is currently unknown. He does plan on racing this summer, but the summer after will depend on how busy he is.

“I would crack a few jokes, drink a few pops and then talk to the boys,” Granzella said.
