VANDALISM WILL NOT WRECK COUGAR PRIDE

Over the summer, South High experienced some horrible vandalism when someone turned on the water in the new wing of the school and left them running.

This led to a lot of damage and ended up costing the school over $100,000. The district is still awaiting the final cost total. Many students and staff have different opinions on the vandalism, but most are angry and some are just confused on why someone would do something like this to a new building.

At the time of the incident the school did not have any security cameras. We believe that if we had them, we could have at least caught the culprit. The vandalism may have still happened, but we would know who did it.

Principal Curtis Stevens said that he believes that the vandalism was damaging to school spirit and what people think about our school.

“It’s very personal to students and feels as if they have put so much into the school so it’s upsetting to see something like this happen.” Stevens said.

At the time of the vandalism, no security systems were installed with two thirds of the building finished. Since that time, security cameras have been installed and when the construction is complete there will be close to 70 cameras throughout the building to keep students and staff safe.

The students of South High have been showing pride by going to social media to bring awareness to the incident that has happened. Some have also helped by giving information they thought would help. If anyone has any information about the vandalism contact the police, school or the Crimestoppers. Any information will help. The investigation is ongoing but we want to find out who did it. Many staff and students hope justice is served.

- The new pod restrooms, do I shut the door or not? Also why are they always clogged? + The student section starting off with a bang.

- Tornado and fire drills. They are necessary, but an inconvenience for everyone. + Paw-Mart for being open when we need it most.

- Not having a normal week where everything goes right.

NEW FACES FOR NEW YEAR

Charlie Lynn

Charlie Lynn in a brand new English teacher at South High. He has been teaching for four years, but just moved here this year. Teaching was not his first choice, but eventually he ended up here.

“I tried to do something that you make money in. Eventually, I realized that you should do something that you enjoy doing more than hating your life every day for a paycheck,” Lynn said.

His first impression of the school was that everyone was very friendly and welcoming.

“Students were very nice, respectable. The staff was very welcoming of new teachers. The new part of the building looks awesome, the pods are an experience, but could I truely be a South High teacher if I hadn’t been in the pods?”

BONUS FACT: He has broken his nose six times.

Jeanine Lytton

Coming in as a teacher with 25 years experience, Jeanine Lytton joins the South High staff as an algebra teacher.

She grew up in a family full of teachers, which drove her to be a teacher as well.

“That’s all I really knew,” Lytton said.

When she arrived, her first impressions of South High were that it was very welcoming.

“It’s very organized, and the people are super friendly,” Lytton said.

BONUS FACT: She has coached many sports, including basketball, volleyball, track, tennis, gymnastics, soccer, dance and cheerleading.

Jose Garcia

Character development has a brand new teacher this year, Jose Garcia. Formally known as In School Suspension, students are still able to attend school despite breaking school policy. Garcia was born in Santa Maria, Calif. but moved to Kansas to play tennis in college.

He has worked in school districts 428 and 355 as a substitute teacher, and also worked as an officer at Sowers Alternative High School in Wichita. Last year, he worked as an instructional aid at Cottonwood, but has moved to South High this year.

“I like the school. Everyone is friendly, the students are good. First impressions have been really good of the school,” Garcia said.

BONUS FACT: He went to Bethany College.

Ashley Winger

Ashley Winger joined the South High staff this year after two previous years of teaching.

She wanted a job with meaning, which drove her to become the Family and Consumer Science teacher.

“I just wanted to have a profession with more meaning and more value. I wanted to walk away each day feeling like I made a difference in someone’s life,” Winger said.

South High can be overwhelming to some, but Winger had a great first impression.

“I love the diversity. I love the kids.

It’s just a good climate, a good culture here at South,” Winger said.

BONUS FACT: She’s a big dog person.

Tim Prickett

Tim Prickett is a new Special Education teacher this year. This is his 16th year teaching but his first year teaching at South High.

“I love helping people.

My dad said if you could do one thing for the rest of your life to make you happy and money is not an issue, that’s what you should be doing,” Prickett said.

As a first year teacher, it is hard to adjust to new schools. However, South High has given Prickett a good first impression.

“It’s a different population as far as diversity goes,” Prickett said.

BONUS FACT: As a military kid, he grew up in Honolulu, but moved to Junction City when he was six.

Alyssa Lane

Alyssa Lane is a first-year orchestra teacher. She is returning to South High this year, but instead of being a student, she is a teacher.

She had helped teach before, which prompted her to become an orchestra teacher.

“I helped with the youth symphony program, and I helped with the preparatory orchestra,” Lane said.

“Watching beginning students get that ‘ah-ha’ moment of when they first get something, that brought me in,” Lane said.

Lane graduated from South High, so it was an experience to come back after so many years.

“It as weird to see the pods coming down. It brought back lots of good memories. The kids are great, extremely helpful and supportive.”

BONUS FACT: She sang opera in college.

After William Hall resigned in April, USD 305 was on the hunt for a new superintendent. Dr. James Hardy came up as the interim superintendent for the school district.

Hardy has been in education for 36 years. He went to Kansas State University for his undergraduate and his doctorate, and Fort Hays State University for his masters.

What drove him to become a superintendent is the same reason he became a teacher.

“I wanted to make a difference and give back. Teachers do that on a small scale and superintendents do it on a much larger scale,” Hardy said.

Coming into USD 305 Hardy said that he did not have very many challenges.

“Salina schools are respected and around the state, and is a premier school district,” Hardy said.

The hardest struggle coming into USD 305 for Hardy was adapting to how everything is done.

“All premier school districts have good leadership, teachers and organization, the struggle of coming into one of those districts is to understand how everything is run,” Hardy said.

Looking at South High in a general, Hardy admires the career and technical education classes and pathways.

“When a students goes through a pathway, they know what they want to do when they get to college,” Hardy said.

Hardy was born to a military family.

He went to six schools before sixth grade.

He was born in Georgia.

He has been a teacher, coach, school administrator and superintendent.

He was once the conductor in “The Music Man.”

He said South High also is student centered and a very comfortable, relaxing space. When asked about challenges at South High, Hardy could only look to the future.

“They need to continue to be forward thinking, and abandon things that do not work.” Hardy said.

He also has great admiration for principal Curtis Stevens.

“Mr. Stevens is awesome and so is the staff at South High,” Hardy said.

He went on to say that whenever Stevens has to make a decision he asks how is it going to help the students. He does not take into consideration how much easier it will be for him, he does what is best for the students.

“I want students to know I am all about them. Most have probably already seen me around school,” Hardy said.

SCHOOL STORE SELLS SNACKS, SUPPLIES

Do you ever get crazy cravings at 9:18 a.m.? Do you wish perhaps there was someplace you could go to satisfy your cravings? Do you still get these cravings, despite the fact that there is nowhere to shop during that time of day? Of course not! All thanks to Pawmart.

All jokes aside, Paw-mart is a new and very exciting change to our dear South High School. Not only is it beneficial for a student’s morning cravings, but it will also benefit the future careers of many students as well.

Sue Montoy, who teaches Business, is just one of the staff members who is in charge of the store with many of her students. Classes involved with the program are: Marketing, Multimedia Production & Editing, Accounting and the special education classes.

“[It was created to have] cooperation between classes, mainly for the special education classes,” Montoy said.

There were many factors to be ac-

-counted for when putting together this store. The Marketing class had been in charge of promoting and picking stock.

They chose prices of items, and figure out popular trends that will sell.

Multimedia classes were in charge of the design of the store and the spirit items for sell. This will teach them how to create products and design items that customers will buy.

Advantages of having this inschool store span beyond the students involved in operating it. Students can expect to see many positive outcomes because of the Paw-mart.

10 READY TO RUMBLE, NOT FUMBLE sports 9.15.17

It is the beginning of the end for the class of 2018 and stepping on the field for one final season will be bittersweet for the senior football players.

“We all care a lot about the game and we’ve been playing together for a long time,” quarterback Casey Lanoue (’18) said.

This year the seniors have their sights set on winning and are hungry to improve from their 1-8 record last year.

“We want to succeed and we’ve had a strong offseason, so I think we have a lot of confidence starting this year,” Dalen Burdick (’18) said.

What is also important, though, is finally getting the chance to lead their underclassmen. The four seniors on the leadership committee this year are Lanoue, Tanner Parret, Ethan Resley and Payton Webb.

“We’ve gotten great leadership from these guys through the offseason and into the season,” Head Coach Sam Sellers said. “We had a very tough year last year and this group has already shown that it’s not going to happen again.”

And it seems that their advice has

been paying off, as juniors Luke Streit and Cai Calvert noted.

“Working in the weight room and on the field with the seniors has really motivated me to push myself,” Streit said.

“Tanner (Parret) shows up to everything and he’s always there for the team,” Calvert added.

With their eyes on the prize, the seniors are ready to make this season a

memorable one, but not before reflecting on how football has changed them into better men.

“I’m tougher mentally and physically because of football,” Burdick said.

Lanoue has also learned a lot.

“Football has taught me how do deal with loss and move on from things in life,” Lanoue said.

The team will be back in action tonight when they play Campus at home.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE

Both the boys and girls cross country teams are ready to hit the ground running this year after the loss of some talented seniors last season.

“The biggest challenge for us is probably the inexperience, but we’re going to keep running hard every day and do our best,” Keetan Munsell (’19) said.

The senior leadership is what is going to motivate and guide the talented underclassmen on the girl’s side this year.

“Jissel Campa (’18) is one senior girl who has shown leadership. She has improved a lot the past two years,” Head Coach Travis Peterson said.

Peterson also credited Munsell as

being a strong vocal leader and hardworker on the boy’s team.

While Munsell’s main goal is to place at state again, Peterson says his number one goal for both teams is simply to get better each week.

“Our goal is to continue the success that both teams had last season,” Peterson said.

With meets at Hesston and Buhler behind them, the teams are looking to improve times throughout the remainder of their season.

Next Thursday both varsity and JV teams will be running at McPherson.

As a new season of girls tennis comes around, players are preparing to make it just as great of a season as last year.

Last season the team won the AVCTL D1 and Class 5A Maize regional title. Also the team placed seventh in the state championship.

Head coach Ryan Stuart said that even though the team has lost a few seniors he is still excited to see different players advance to playing varsity.

Returning state qualifier Jessica Coleman (‘18) tore her ACL earlier in the year and had surgery seven months ago but has returned.

“I wasn’t expecting to be able to play this season because recovery is eight months. So I just thought that I wouldn’t be able to play for a month.” Coleman said.

With her doubles partner graduating last year, she is still in search of a new one and has yet to narrow her options down to one.

KICK IN THE SOCCER SEASON

Last season the soccer boys ended off with a record of 14-4-1 and a win for regionals, but this is a new season with a clean slate.

Steve Tilson has worked with the program for about six years, but this is his first year working as the head coach instead of assistant coach.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the new crop of boys stepping up and to see them carry on the traditions,” Tilson said.

Helping keep these traditions alive, the new captains for this season are Esteban Escobedo (’18), Justin Almaguer (’18), Cristobal Dominguez (’19) and Alex Escobedo (’20).

Many of the players have played out of season with soccer programs such as the Salina Parks and Recreation, the Salina Soccer Club and even with out of town programs. When they are not together playing soccer, they spend time together eating out and having fun.

Even with as many as 10 new freshmen players, they work and act like a family on and off of the field.

With the last year’s seniors gone, adjusting to a younger team is a new challenge.

“We have to work harder due to us having a younger team and we do. We really do work hard,” Dominguez said.

Like every other sport, the boys go through a series of conditioning in order to prepare for the season. During the summer the team conditioned in order to build up endurance, skill and muscle. Coaches also have them do a lot of scrimmaging in order to see how they play on the field and with other players.

Being in shape is a vital role to making the team, but being on the team is not just about being in shape.

“The most important part about being on the team is scoring goals,” Esteban Escobedo joked. “No, the most important part is being with your friends and family.”

Fresh faces shooting for aces

The girls golf team seeks to improve their results from last year. This year, however, they plan to do so with fresh faces.

establish a run at state in the next two seasons.

“I just try to help my teammates out as much as I can,” Miller said.

Hurley, like much of her team, is also fairly new to the game.

“I’ve coached eight different teams in the past, but I’ve never coached golf,” Hurley said. “I teach exactly how I was taught.”

Hurley was taught by Randy Syring, the Head PGA professional at the Salina Country Club.

Because golf is a technical game, Hurley has made sure to teach her athletes the technique that is important in the game of golf.

This year, the team only has three returners of the 10 girls on the team.

The returners consist of Miller, Crisi Rivera (’18) and Lindsay Brown (’20).

The team hopes to consistently improve their skills and hopefully qualify some of the team for state.

“I’m pretty excited,” Miller said.

The team’s next meet will be Monday, Sept. 18 at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

SOPHOMORE SERVES IT UP

For the past nine years, Peyton Froome (’20) has found herself on the volleyball court. Froome is a sophomore playing varsity and is happy with it. She took an interest in volleyball when she was old enough to watch her sister play and then decided she wanted to follow in her footsteps.

Froome started playing volleyball in second grade and plans to continue to play through high school. She enjoys playing volleyball but it is not something she wants to continue to pursue past high school. Even though she really does like volleyball, she can not see herself doing it for her whole life.

Froome enjoys many things about volleyball, and one of them would be that she does not have to run. She also loves the strategy volleyball has and thinks it is just fun overall.

“Also, I always love seeing my teammates every day at practice,”

Froome said.

Froome also talked about her favorite position.

“It would be left side because players get to hit and pass,” Froome said.

“I also just love that position and get excited whenever I get to play it.”

Juggling athletics and academics is often a challenge for many, but Froome said her academics are rarely affected and she still does well in school when volleyball season comes around. She thinks it is really easy going and there is not a lot of pressure.

“Volleyball to me is the one sport that is fun without stress,” Froome said.

While Froome enjoys most aspects of the game, she does not like when players mess up, and she thinks it is embarrassing when that happens. Overall, she enjoys volleyball a lot and can not see herself not playing.

The team’s next game will be at 9 a.m. tomorrow at Central High School.

DESIGNING FOR THE

FUTURE

Over the summer, Gage Roberts (’19) traveled to College Park, Maryland to study architecture at the university.

For three weeks, Roberts studied three different types of architecture.

Each week would showcase a different project.

Week one focused on a cube that would eventually have its center carved into a new shape. Roberts explained that it focused on the open-concept of architecture, adding that open-concept is becoming more and more prevalent in today’s society.

Week two saw Roberts design a space that a graffiti artist could do artwork on. He was given a land plot and had to use walls to design the area the artist would work from. But the project wasn’t just about the walls.

“A path is not a space. A path is a way to navigate a space,” Roberts said.

The project had a huge emphasis on the paths between the walls.

dimensions to build a public library and a social space in an urban area, which would eventually be created out of Styrofoam. However, he had to follow the rules of urban architecture.

Roberts successfully completed the course and earned three college credit hours. On average, he spent 10 hours a day working on architecture. In fact, he spent 15 hours in one day doing his work.

Roberts earned the opportunity through the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. Included in the scholarship was $40,000 through high school and necessary items he would need for school, like sports equipment, school supplies, enrollment, payment for national tests and a free trip in the nation each summer.

Each year, around 3000 seventh grade students apply for the scholarship across the nation. Through many different interviews, the field is then narrowed down to 300 people. Eventually, only 60 people each year receive the scholarship, one of them being Roberts.

Next summer, he plans to visit the University of Connecticut for a college research project.

Sophomore struggles to balance dancing, singing and acting

By Alivia Heard Whitney Turner (’20) is one of the talented dancers that attends South. Her talents spread to Peppers, New Dawn and Theatre. You may also see her deep in another hobby such as drawing, writing or anything artsy.

Turner’s dance schooling started at a young age of three years old. By the time she was eight years old, she was in a company class called a Petite class.

“It’s always hard at first. Some people get it first try, but it’s always good to practice at it,” Turner said.

The three times a year she competes in the late spring, it turns to a family trip to Kansas City or Wichita.

She competes with a solo dance and group dances. Turner has also hurt herself before during a competition.

“Dance can be a dangerous sport,” Turner said.

She has sprained her ankle and fractured her elbow. Instead of thoughts of quitting striking her at these times,

she thinks, “When can I go back?”

Turner also appreciates how dance helps her in other artistic aspects.

“Dance helps with theatre a lot. In theatre, you dont have to get main roles,” Turner said.

Her inspiration is not a person or idol, but herself. She wants to be able to look at a group and not think, “I want to be like them,” She thinks, “I want to be a part of them.” Which is exactly how she joined theatre and New Dawn.

The most difficult thing about being involved in many things for her is time management.

Time management is crucial because of all of the musical madness that happens in theatre and the competitions already draining her.

Turner called it the hardest thing ever when trying to balance dance, Advanced Placement classes, New Dawn, Theatre and Peppers. And yet,

she would never attempt to quit any of them.

At times she wants to give up. She thinks about all the time she spends in her activities and days gone by. Turner often wonders if it is worth it. In the end, thinking of the future and the effects of the long term keeps her going.

In the future, she wants to be on Broadway and in a prestigious dance company called the Rockettes. When she was younger, she had a dream to be on Disney. That ultimate dream still thrives, but now someday she hopes to dance for the industry.

A solar eclipse takes place when the moon completely covers the sun. This takes place every few years and is only visible from some places on Earth. Although most of Kansas was not in the path of totality, USD 305 let students have the opportunity to watch the 2017 solar eclipse. It was a cloudy day, but this did not stop the students and staff of South High from having a good time during their time outside.
