2.4.16 opinion South’s school spirit or our lack thereof

In their senior year of high school athletics, all student athletes look forward to having their friends and classmates cheering them on at sporting events. This year, South High has done a decent job of showing school spirit, even reaching the number four spot in the weekly CatchItKansas student section rankings. However, as each season comes to an end, our school spirit tends to wither away.

During football season, we had a stellar student section and created unique themes to get everyone involved while cheering on the Cougars, but as their season came to a close, our student section went from loud and proud, to dull and lacking. It is understandable how some students might not want to go stand in the freezing cold, however, once basketball season came around, our student section began to wither away once again.

Only one month into basketball season, our student section is slowly losing numbers to the point where at the third place SIT games for both boys and girls, there was NO student section whatsoever. As for the girls basketball team, there is never a student section.

Many athletes in the school will tell you that nine times out of ten, having a student section cheering adds to the momentum of the game. Without a stu-

dent section, it can lose the intensity and excitement. For both fans and athletes, the student section makes the game more intense and all around enjoyable.

Not only for athletic events, our school spirit is extremely lacking at pep rallies, plays and musicals, and any sport that’s NOT basketball or football.

At our pep rallies, everyone looks as though they are in pain as they chant “C-O-U-G, A-RS!” and practically all sprint for the doors as the bell rings. Our cheerleaders and Peppers work their tails off to promote school spirit that is returned with halfhearted claps and cheers.

Even other sports are not recognized for their stellar performances in competition. This year, the soccer team took first at the state competition and received plenty of recognition, however in previous years when they have come so close to the state competition, it goes without recognition.

Our girls golf team, boys and girls swim teams, girls and boys tennis, cross country, and countless other activities have sent South students to state competition to receive slim recognition for their accomplishments.

Our theatre program is one of the best in the state, earning best show at the Jester awards for their production of “Crazy For You” last year. Students were nominated and given awards

for winning best actor, best choreography, and best pit orchestra. But half the school doesn’t know these things because of how under appreciated the theatre program is.

Students should want to support their school, and here at South, we really try to recog-

nize everybody. However, some students still don’t receive recognition for their accomplishments. We should make it fun to go to sporting events and support our debate team and theatre department because here at South High, we have a lot to be proud of.

New schedule will have pros, cons

There has been a lot of talk recently about the schedule change next year and I am here to settle of these rumors. I for one, am in favor of the schedule change.

We will finally be able to wake up at the same time every morning because school will start at 7:45 a.m. every day and

we will get out of school at 2:40 p.m. Who does not like a consistent schedule?

Our days will no longer be called green and gold days, they will be called A and B days. One week we will go to A days on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and then the next week we will go on Tuesday and Thursday.

I do think that we could have came up with better names like I don’t know, maybe green and gold days?

Now I can see where some people might start to dislike this because we will not have all days on Mondays anymore. I like all days just as much as the rest of you South High students but now we do not have to rush to

finish our homework on Sunday night for all of our classes.

I know that ELO is a lot of students “favorite class“ because they do not have to do anything, so lucky for you guys, ELO is going to be longer next year. Right now ELO is 70 minutes long and with the new schedule, ELO is 88 minutes.

ELO will be divided into two sections and there will be a fiveminute passing period in between.

Now, teachers teach five out of seven classes, but next year they will be teaching six.

This means that if our 80 to 90 teachers each have to teach a new class, then our school will have 80 to 90 more class-

es. Therefore, South will have smaller classes so students can have more one on one time with their teacher.

Like most things, this schedule change comes with disadvantages too. I am going to miss all days the most. They made Mondays a little more tolerable every week. RIP all days, you will be missed by the students of South High.

In the end, I believe that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages of the new schedule change because South High needs a change.

Even if you do not like the change, you better start to like it because it’s going to be a long rest of your high school career.

The patio that I used to eat lunch at during my freshman year and where we went sometimes for Kevin Poland’s class is gone. In return it has been replaced by dirt and metal, and I know it is for a good cause and I want this school to be better for the next generation but there are many memories that will die with this construction.

To those who are freshman and will most likely be here when the school is done being remodeled I give you this mission, do not forget the old school and the memories that it had with

it. When you hear people complaining about the new school, which will most likely happen, tell them that things could be a lot worse. They will not have to deal with the foundation slipping, or holes that appear magically in the ceiling and start dripping water, or having to hear Jeff Harris’s class next door watching “Band of Brothers” on full volume.

This school is many things: old, loud, inefficient, scary, but there is a culture that can only be found at Salina South High School. From the senior count-

down, to the “hella hype” student section at games, to the scramble to lunch on crispito day.

For the next generations of students who will go to South High they may not have the same culture so it is up to the classes that remember the former school as it was.

At the same time though, I cannot help but sympathize with those who were here during the original school, and what it must feel like coming back to a place that has completely changed from what they remember.

ACT info and summer prep class

The ACT (American College Test) is a test that students take in order to get accepted into colleges. It is a four hour test that covers four different sections, which are english, math, reading and science. 21 is the score to get because most colleges accept a score of 21.

The next availabel ACT test is April 9 and the registration deadline is March 4.

Pricing The regular ACT with no writing costs $39.50 and the ACT with writing costs $56.50.

The late registration fee is the price of the test and then an extra $25.00.

Students have the opportunity to but the ACT Online Prep book for $34.95. It has practice tests with questions that are on the ACT.

It is free to view your scores online. If students want to send their score to colleges, then there is an extra fee.

Scores

ACT scores are released between 3 to 8 weeks after the test. The ACT writing test scores are usually released between five to eight weeks after the test.

Test scores are sent out by mail but students can also find

out their score online by going to www.actstudent.org. Test scores come out a lot faster online.

Students can have their test scores sent to colleges of their choice, which was mentioned earlier.

ACT Prep Class

Carlene Stueve has been in charge of the ACT summer prep class for about seven years.

Charlie Todd has been helping with the class for two years now.

“The ACT prep class is a very successful course and it is very beneficial to the students that take it,” Stueve said.

The ACT summer prep class is a nine day class in which Stueve and Todd break down the four sections of the ACT. They give students different hints to help them with the test.

The students take a lot of practice tests and then grade and analyze them.

“The ACT prep class was absolutely beneficial for me. It was very effective and my score went up by five,” Benjamin Cooper (’16) said.

When and where?

The prep class always starts nine days before the ACT, so this year the class is May 31 to June 11. The classes are two

hours everyday for these nine days.

Students can choose whether they want to take the class from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m., 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

The class is at South High in either Stueve’s room or Daniel Colton’s room; both rooms are in the 400 pod.

“Students that take the class that have not taken the ACT yet usually recieve a really good first test score. The students that have already taken the ACT but are taking the prep class to do better usually make pretty impressive gains,” Stueve said.

Students should consider taking the ACT prep class over the summer. Even if you have already taken the ACT and just want to get a better score, the prep class is a great choice.

“The ACT prep class really prepared me for what the test was going to be like so I was not as nervous during or before the test as I thought I was going to be. I’m glad I took the class,” Kacin Granzella (’17) said.

Students truly benefit from taking this class and they do better on their ACT. Students can enroll for the prep class when students enroll for summer school.

What they didn’t know was, taking the ACT earlier saves time in the long run, signing up for scholarships sooner would earn more scholarships in the end, and signing up for more than one college is necessary.

When asked, “What is one thing you wish you knew before entering senior year?” quite a few seniors answered with, “how sad it will be.”

Seniors learned quickly that there is more to their senior year than just ACT’s, scholarships, and colleges.

Training helps student save man’s life

Most students at Salina High School South have jobs, many working in fields such as retail and fast food. One job that is less common for students is life guarding.

Taylor Thompson (’16) is a life guard at the Salina Family YMCA and takes her job very seriously. Most days are laid back for Thompson, but Tuesday, Jan. 12 was not one of those days.

Thompson began working at the YMCA about a month ago.

She works anywhere from 10 to 15 hours a week. She first became interested in becoming a lifeguard when some of her other friends were.

“A lot of people on the swim team are lifeguards. I’m a good swimmer so I figured I would be good at it,” Thompson said.

And she isn’t wrong, Thompson proved she does an amazing job as a lifeguard.

As Thompson was working the evening of Jan. 12 a man began drowning. With help from the director of the YMCA on duty that day, Thompson was able to save his life. Shortly after the man became unresponsive, his

According to Thompson, the man had on goggles and she presumed that he was just swimming under water like normal because he wasn’t under very long. She stated that there was no struggle and he and his friends said that they were doing “no breathers,” a form of swimming where you go a longer distance without coming up for air.

After Thompson was able to resuscitate the man, the ambulance showed up. They concluded that he began drowning due to exhaustion because of the warm water combined with the amount of time he had spent holding his breath.

“You never really know how you’ll react in an emergency until it actually happens. Fortu-

nately for me, I was able to remain calm,” Thompson said.

Life guarding is not an easy job. Training to become a life guard includes tasks such as swimming 200-400 yards, treading water for two minutes, being able to grab a ten pound brick from a pool eight to twelve feet deep. Courses life guards must take include CPR, First Aid, and sometimes AED training.

Thompson’s training included going through a certification class, consisting of three to eight hour day classes in the pool and in the classroom with additional online courses.

“I was the only life guard on duty in the family pool so it was up to me to save him,” Thompson said.

“I was definitely scared as I was trying to save him, but I just did what I had to do. It was automatic. I’m just glad I was able to save him.”

Cast plans to make audience laugh with musical

By Logan Maxwell The “Addams Family” musical is not the typical show that South High students expect from the group of talented students that always entertain us with the shows they put together. Director Kate Lindsay and vocal director Eddie Creer purposely chose this show for the pure fact that it is “wacky and different.”

“We liked that it was a newer show and we knew a lot of students would be excited about it,” Lindsay said.

The cast has been working hard on this show since auditions in the beginning of January.

This musical is different from anything else that South High students and staff have put together before. From the ensemble of dead ancestors to the costumes from many different eras, to the set full of torture devices, the “Addams

Family” musical is not a show that anyone would want to miss.

“The audience can definitely expect to see a lot of passion coming from the cast,” Ashley Arnold (’16) said.

Don’t let the darkness deter you from going to see the show because as usual, there will be some comedy coming from the cast members.

“Once it’s ready there’s always a fun energy coming from the cast; the kids are working very hard,” Lindsay said.

5 news Student woodworkers nail new ideas on the head

Officially known as Cabinet Making, the woodshop classroom allows students to put their creativity to work and use hands-on methods to build all kinds of projects.

Woodshop has been an option at South High for decades and continues to inspire students to create tables, chairs, boxes and anything else that they can come up with.

Woodworking and drafting instructor Gary Seibel has been teaching at South High since 1996. He spends countless hours working with students and showing them the ropes of woodworking.

Students get the opportunity to work with many complicated tools and machines such as the planer, table saw, jointer and CNC router.

Justin Winns (’17) is currently experiencing his first

year in the woodshop classroom.

“My favorite tool to use is the bandsaw. It allows you to cut wood fast very easily and always gives you a nice straight line,” Winns said.

Though it is only his first year, Winns is already looking forward to all of the possibilities the class provides him.

“I really enjoy learning and exploring all of the things you can make,” Winns said, “I am most excited to build an oakwood chair.”

As he put together the pieces of his newly-made DVD box, Winns explained that he plans to take Cabinet Making 2 next year.

“My favorite thing about the class is being able to use the nice tools and equipment,” said Borcherding, “I plan on doing

woodworking as a hobby in the future.”

No matter what project they are working on, the woodshop students of South High are always looking for new ideas and ways to push past their limits.

State debater duo to take on nationals

The debate team competed in the state competition on Jan. 15 and 16. Debate and Forensics coach Jody Eves took four two-speaker teams with her to compete.

Teams that competed in the state competition were as follows: Alexcis Barnes (’16) and Tyler Ross (’17), Andres Mata (’17) and Asi Mailau (’18), Alvaro Escobedo (’17) and Haylee Householter (’18), and Tristen Blake (’16) and Mikayla Nixon (’17).

“All of the teams did an excellent job and had a really good season,” Eves said.

Their year long topic for the 2015-2016 debate season was

domestic surveillance. According to the NSA, their mission is to “collect, process, and store U.S. citizen data for the good of the nation.” Domestic surveillance is seen in the use of drones and airport security.

The decided upon resolution based on what the debaters had to say was that the United States federal government should substantially curtail its domestic surveillance.

In competition, Ross and Barnes went 4-2 and are currently ranked in the top 20 of the 5A state debate teams. The duo showed a lot of success in competition this year, taking second at a national qualifier.

The national debate competition will take place in June.

“It was a privilege to coach and travel these young people and watch them mature into great speakers during the season,” Eves said.

Each team had to have traveled to at least four tournaments and have a fifty percent win record to qualify for the state tournament.

Throughout the season, Salina South Debate traveled 48 students to tournaments.

“I have traveled for debate for a very long time and these students are among some of the brightest to represent South High,” Eves said.

During my freshman year, I was in the store with my mom and I went to get cookie dough. My mom went to the checkout counter before me. When I went to go check out with her after getting the cookie dough, I discovered that she had left me there at the store all alone. She told me that she thought I was in the car. One day I was at a party and I was telling a story about how I was sleeping on my couch, but I said the word coach on accident. I have some trouble pronouncing words so that is why everyone was looking at me weirdly. I was like, “What you guys don’t sleep on your coach?” I was so confused as to why everyone looked at me like that until my friend asked if I meant to say couch. I said, “Oh crap, yeah,” as my face turned red. I was so embarrassed.

It was a warm spring afternoon and my bowels were trembling. The crispito from lunch was settling in and track practice was nearing. The 400 pod bathroom stalls were occupied and I had to go! I couldn’t envision anything worse than running while having to use the rest room. As a last resort, I barged into the men’s staff bathroom. The rebellious teenager in me came alive. During the process, a “staff member” knocked on the door. I knew that my voice would give away my student identity, so I started grunting, hacking and trying to make deep pitched noises that would cover up my true identity. The knocking grew louder and I thought to myself, “How on Earth can they not hear me?” I continued to cough even louder and finally, miraculously, the knocking stopped. I waited ten minutes to make sure the coast was clear. I cracked the door open and ran to safety in my car outside. It was at that moment I knew I was the most rebellious kid in the school.

Triathletes balance busy schedules

Reed is not just a triathlete, he is a quadathlete. This year he will be participating in cross country, basketball, golf and track. This is Reed’s first year running track.

Reed says that playing sports all year around is very time-consuming and very stressful, but there is nothing better than game days. It is stressful having to balance school and sports at the same time.

Reed works about 16 hours a week at his job at the golf course and still manages to play a sport and get good grades.

“If I did not play sports, I think school would be harder because I would not be as motivated or focused on getting my work done,” Reed said.

Reed is undecided on whether he wants to play a sport in college.

“It’s so easy when you want to and so hard when you have to,” Reed said. He lives his life by this quote.

“Playing sports all year around is really tiring and it is a lot of practice, but it is fun and I stay in shape,” Foster said.

Foster says the most stressful thing is getting good grades.

The hardest part about playing sports all year around is getting home really late and having to do homework.

Foster does have a job but he says that he has no trouble juggling work with the sports that he plays.

“My favorite part is being

able to be with my friends all the time and getting the chance to play sports with them,” Foster said.

Foster’s favorite sport is baseball. He might play baseball in college but he is not sure yet.

Following their victory against Campus, the girls travelled to Wichita Southeast and took an enormous 51-26 win against the Golden Buffaloes.

That Friday, the girls took on the Hutchinson Salthawks and won a nail-biter, with a 32-

30 victory. Leading the Lady Cougars was Holloway with 12 points, Kirby added nine, and Jacie Marcotte (’18) with seven.

“I think mentally we have grown stronger. After being through all the loss it was hard to come back but now we have a different mind set,” Mikaela Johnson (’16) said.

“We started off kind of rough, but once we got our first win, we started to click and it got a lot easier to be confident on the court,” Angie Hall (’18) said.

In the Salina Invitational Tournament, the girls continued their winning streak, defeating the Liberal Lady Reds in round one.

In the second match of the SIT, the Cougars faced Buhler, taking a tough loss to the Lady Crusaders, sending them to the third place match up against Andover. The team finished the

tournament defeating Andover 45-42 and taking third.

Tournament highlights include Hall’s first double-double, with ten points and ten rebounds against Andover. Making the alltournament team for South was senior Teryn Holloway.

“In the beginning of the season we played some of the toughest teams in our league and we struggled,” said Allie Valdez (’18) Valdez contributed nine points to the team in the third place game on Sunday, Jan. 24.

“Now that we have a win under us I think that we are far more confident,” said Valdez.

The Lady Cougars will play a rescheduled game against the Hays Indians tonight in Hays.

In this coming week, on Feb. 16, they will have the same opportunity. Trace Kochevar (’16) says that to ensure a second win against them they need to keep up the hard work at practice.

Looking into the future, the boys all share the same aspirations.

“I want to be able to hang a banner by the end of the season,” Kochevar said.

The boys competed in three games during the Salina Invitational Tournament. They defeated Goodland in the first round with a final score of 5730.

In the second round the boys fell to Abilene, although it was a close game, with a final score of 57-60, which led them to compete for third place.

They played a very tough game against Andover in order to get the bronze.

It was tied with one minute left in the game when Dylan Becker (’16) was fouled. He was given two free throws and managed to make them both, leading them to victory.

“It’s an open shot and you’ve got to make it in a pressure situation for your team,” Becker said in an interview with the Salina Journal.

Their next game will be tonight against the Hays Indians at Hays.

Johnson plays basketball in the winter and runs cross country and track for South High.

Even though she plays sports all year around, she still has time for a job. Johnson works at Dick’s Sporting Goods where she works about 12 hours a week.

“Playing three sports is stressful because you still have school, practice, work and homework,” Johnson said.

She said there is not a lot of free time and it is really tiring.

Johnson’s favorite part about playing three sports is getting to know everyone on her teams. Sports are how she met some of her close friends.

“I play three sports because I do not like going home and just sitting all the time, I like being active and having stuff to do,” Johnson said.

Track is her favorite sport and she said there is a possibility that she will run track in college.

Girls take third at SIT against Andover

Boys prepare for second win against rival

As we enter the month of February, basketball season is coming to an end. Throughout the season there have been many improvements and successful games for the boys basketball team with a record of 9-3.

According to head coach Jason Hooper there have been many noticeable improvements compared to last year.

“They have been a lot more consistent on the offensive end by scoring a significantly greater amount of points,” Hooper said.

Swimmers, divers look to state meet

The swim team has been working hard this season in hopes they can all make it to state.

Raef Young’s (’16) highlight of last year was going to state and placing in the relay stage.

Young has been swimming for four years and plans to swim in the Navy.

“I tell myself I can do it and I know that no matter if the meet ends great, I did my best,” Young said.

Swimmer and diver Kaden Moresco’s (’18) favorite thing about swimming is the thrill of competition.

“During all the meets, I feel like all the work has been worth it, I everything I did was great,” Moresco said.

Seth Thompson (’19) was the only participant in the diving meet on Jan. 14 for South.

He averaged around 160-170 points in the competition.

Thompson’s goal for this season is not to belly flop while diving and make the

most points. He plans on diving throughout his high school years .

When diving, Thompson’s favorite thing to do is flip through the air.

“When you hit the water and know you did your best is the best feeling,” Thompson said.

“I did my best that day and wish I scored more points, but I am okay with what I got,” Solis

said.

Overall, as a team, they had placed eighth in state last year.

At a meet on Jan. 26, they had scored 80 points .

As this year is the second year for Salina South High School’s Bowling team they have made a huge impact.

This year alone, each of the teams, JV and varsity girls, and JV and varsity boys, have won first place at every meet except one separately.

Over the weekend the teams competed at a meet in

North Rock Lanes in Wichita that had 29 teams and about 170 bowlers.

At this meet Kyle Miller (’18) had the highest series with a score of 763, and Maria Salinas (’16) had the eighth highest series with a score of 583.

While the girls currently hold the second highest single meet score with a 2460.

Coaching the bowling team

This has also been the second year of coaching the team for Collin Carlson.

This year Carlson wants the players to focus less on constantly trying get higher scores but to instead focus on why they joined the team, for fun.

“The big thing I want them to focus on is improving themselves personally, instead of worrying about the reward and the place that they get,” Carlson said.

Carlson is getting a good routine his second time around now that he knows what to expect.

“It’s nice to know the kids

and see them back again, know the program and people involved, and to know the routine of the players and how the season will play out,” Carlson said.

While all of the bowlers have certainly made an impact on this season’s success=, players to watch out for are as follows.

Caleb Demel (’18) who has the 23rd highest average in the state with a 215.

Kyle Miller (’18) who has the tenth highest average in the state with a score of 221.

Brittany Trumbo (’16) who has the seventh highest girl score of anyone else in the season with a 266.

Maria Salinas (’16) who finished eighth place at the past tournament in Wichita out of 27 girls teams.

Regardless of who will be bowling, students can expect to see a lot of wins by South at a bowling meet.

Injuries affect wrestling teams’ season

The Salina South wrestling team is working as hard as they can to make it to state. The team has been up against some tough opponents recently, so they are practicing more than ever to be the best team in the state.

During the three weeks Allen Heberly (’17) was injured, the team had been affected throughout the time he was out.

“With someone being injured, the whole team is always affected, but it’s pretty normal for injuries to happen so we have to try our best,” said coach Gary Seibel Heberly did not feel great when he sat out for three weeks, but he is coming back stronger than ever. He is working on pinning people down, which usually takes 30 seconds to a minute.

On Jan. 23 in Beloit, after Heberly had been back, he placed fifth in the tournament.

“It felt great,” Heberly said.

Brenner Vogen (’18) placed third at the Beloit tournament.

“It’s such a confidence booster placing third,” Vogen said.

Vogen has a 2:1 win-loss record and stated that he is happy about both wins and with the losses.

Only going to one day of the tournament, Demaj Smith (’17) managed to place eighth in the Beloit meet.

“It feels great to know that I’ve placed,” Smith said.

Smith had been to three tournaments this season, placing in one, he is confident for state.

By Viviana Garcia Kelsie Heier (’16) has always had a passion for art.

She started drawing in middle school and continued to make art as she has grown and improved.

“It gives me a way to release,” Heier said.

Heier’s favorite media to work with is graphite drawing and painting. Her favorite art tool to work with is her pencil.

As Heier grew with her art, she has never had a real inspiration.

“I kind of inspired myself,” Heier said.

Heier plans out an idea and an outline for what she will work on next, but she also improvises as she continues to work with her piece. She knows when her piece is done when she

gets that warm feeling.

Her piece “Innocence” was inspired by the Allie Saum tragedy that happened in May of 2015, but the piece is about innocent victims of violence.

The piece is made of newspaper articles from stories about events happening with tragedies from violence. Heier used ink to paint on a crying girl’s face and hair on top of the articles.

Heier says the tears in the piece represent the tears that have been shed for the victims who have passed from an act of violence.

The piece took a week and a half to put together. This piece means the most to Heier.

Heier’s second piece “Heartbreak” was inspired by a loss she recently has endured. She didn’t put much color into her piece because she likes to keep her artwork simple.

Most of Heier’s artwork tells stories and that’s what people find most unique about her works. Heier often makes her work difficult to understand so she can get people to look deeper into her work than just what it shown to the eye.

After high school, Heier plans on going to college to major in art and has hopes in becoming an art teacher for high school students.
