Healthy FEET are Happy FEET !

You walk, with all your weight plus everything you’re carrying, on your two feet, usually 5,000 steps per day. Add up trips to the bathroom, the fridge, all over the school campus or any of the many steps going everywhere and you will see those 5,000 steps! So, no wonder that people are suffering with all kinds of feet issues and wish to know what can be done toward healthy, happy feet.

After your shower, give your feet a little extra attention. Rub them dry, looking for any unusual skin, especially if you are diabetic. Then, if all is well, rub them with lotion (or trade this job with someone else, it feels great!) to combat dry skin, but do not put lotion between your toes. Keep between the toes very dry to avoid any moisture-loving fungus from taking hold. If you notice any cracks or itching between your toes, attend to it immediately with over-the-counter fungal treatments. Cut your toenails straight across and le them smooth. Long nails can catch on socks or shoes and injure the nail bed, resulting in a twisted, thick or otherwise unhealthy and unsightly nail.

Now, it’s time for socks. Many people are wearing toe socks to hold the healthy spaces between the toes that were there at birth. Look at baby feet and notice that the ball of the foot/toes is very wide. In fact, children’s shoes often look like clown shoes with the wide toe box. Well guess what?! They are on to something. Now, for Your shoes. Your shoes also need to be wide at the toe box to have proper space for your toes in their toe socks or regular socks. This is critical to having healthy feet. Let your toes have as much space as they need, and your feet will carry you heath-fully and happily through every day. When buying shoes look for a wide toe box; but that’s not all, shoes need to be at, yes at. Look at the feet of women who wear high heels and you will see that high heels are not normal or natural for the feet. Those women complain of the misery of wearing heels through the whole day! But, even the heel on a running shoe is usually too high for healthy feet. Along with a wide toe box, and being at, you will look for the shoe to be soft enough for you to twist and fold with your hands. Yes, soft, at, wide-toed shoes are what you are looking for. If you have noticed, many shoe makers are headed that way with their footwear. People are wearing much more comfortable and lightweight shoes.

Native peoples who live close to the earth wear soft moccasins made of animal hides. Their shoes meet all of the criteria above; wide, at and soft. Even the well known Mexican Tarahumara runners, who have inspired all kinds of simple shoes, run for days in hand-made, soft sandals over rocks and trails. Their feet are solid and dependable. Their ankles, knees and hips are aligned and healthy. We want that for ourselves! So, what we have to do is make different and informed choices concerning our shoes. Search online for ‘Wide Toe Box Shoes’ and learn all about your choices for color, style and pricing. Go to local stores for purchase if you want to try on the shoes. Then enjoy your feet! Enjoy walking through every day in happiness and health. You will be glad you treated your feet well, and your feet will be glad, too!

What have you done for the Town of Liberty in the past?

What made you (or Why) did you decide to run for office?

Our world as the way we see it is constantly changing year after year. We question why some people think as they do or the direction they chose to take. Why are we so different? We complain about our president or leaders for their leadership and the course they would have us travel, but are they correct? Why do politicians vote against a motion only because it is the other side? The bad guys or criminals would have us defund the police making it easier to be a bad guy. Civilized people know the police are necessary to deter the bad guys and protect the good guys.

We are raising a generation with different set of standards than we had, but are they the best for the future? Will they become self supporting or will they depend on the government for handouts after we are gone. We can find many things to talk about, but we have little right to complain if we sit back and watch it happen.

Together we can make a difference!

What are your qualifications to run for office?

A. I have worked with many people in and beyond Liberty since 1970 as president, owner, and head carpenter of T & L Construction Co. We built many houses and commercial buildings during that time gaining experience, working closely with the people, and employees. We used computer programs working with contracts, quotes, and staying within budget. We employed qualified people necessary to complete the goal in a timely manner with high ethical standards in quality.

B. In the late 70’s was a volunteer fireman with the Julian Fire Department. In later years served as a board member on the board of directors for the department.

C. In the 1980’s served as president of Liberty Chamber of Commerce implementing Business After Hours and recognizing our existing industry of 10 years or more. We acquired a grant to publish brochures of the Town of Liberty. Was the chairman for the largest Liberty Christmas parade consisting of 19 professional floats, individual and church floats, 4 high school bands and other numerous entries.

D. Former Mayor-Pro Tempore of the Town of Liberty from 20092011.

E. Former Mayor of the Town of Liberty from 2011-2015 F. Founder, Incorporator, Designer, Builder and present Secretary/ Treasurer of the non-profit Liberty Veterans Memorial and Gardens, we welcome any living or deceased Veteran with proof of service in the US Military to have their or someone’s name engraved in the vertical monuments or stepping stones G. A. Serving as Mayor Pro Tempore after the 911 attack on the United States FEMA provided a grant for $500,000 to purchase the ladder truck presently used by the Liberty Fire Department.

B. Bonnie Renfro of Randolph County Economic Corporation was instrumental in bringing Americhem to Liberty providing new and higher paying jobs After looking back at my proposed visions as Mayor for the Town of Liberty in 2011 many of my goals were accomplished or still being reached.

A. We acquired a grant for $483,000 with matching funds of $.50 to $1.00 or $235,000 for the Town of Liberty to install 3 new wells to supply our water needs.

B. Began the process of building a Veterans Memorial at Town Hall, but after leaving office the construction was approved and redesigned for the present location between the Police Stations and Farmers Market.

C. Constructing a shelter for farmers and gardeners, eventually enclosing for year round use as an annex building. That didn’t turn out like I had imagined, but with the help of the Liberty Rotary Club providing labor and Ed Cummings of SuperTex donating materials we have shelters.

D. We brought sidewalk dining and liquor-by-the-drink to Liberty opening the possibilities of providing a dining experience offered by larger towns.

E. We acquired the NC Step Grant providing $100,000 for start up business programs for individuals. A portion of that grant was used to construct the rest rooms at the Farmers Market, tourism marketing, business directory, business website, streetscape improvement F. We worked with Wal-mart locating on Swannanoa Ave in years since sold to Dollar General.

G. Family Dollar came to town later sold to The Dollar Tree.

H. We held the first every Martin Luther King Parade.

I. We leased the corner park planted trees with the intentions of planting trees on main street and removing power lines. Music was provided during the summer months by local musicians.

J. Parks and Recreation received grants from Randolph Health for a walking trail with exercise equipment along the way at Freedom Park.

K. Bonnie Renfro with Randolph County Economic Development Corporation represented Liberty’s existing industries. The question I had at the time was why weren’t we marketing the property north of town? Answer, Railroad would not provide another entry to the property. My solution was to enter the property from York Martin road with a new street, water and sewer, extending Brookwood Ave across the railroad by making a deal with Norfolk-Southern to close the Starmount St. crossing. We pulled together property owners, EDC, The Town of Liberty, and Randolph County with grant money for engineer design. This property was and is still listed as an industrial site in Randolph County with the opportunity to bring diverse high paying jobs to Liberty. Ultra Craft also entertained the idea of allowing their drive to extend to the property providing them another exit.

Community College began classes at the Liberty Fire Department and Town Hall for computer and GED Classes. We were looking for a permanent site if classes were successful.

M. Pallet Express located in Liberty bringing 120 jobs.

How do you plan to serve Liberty if elected to this position?

First of all I am not a politician and don’t believe one should take sides. Every issue will be researched and debated if necessary forming my own opinion and voting for the future of the Town of Liberty. I will continue to work making Liberty a better place to live providing opportunities and amenities offered by larger towns. I will work with everyone fairly and honestly. Any elected official should set the standards of fairness and honesty in the community and not use the elected position for any other goals.

What are your visions for the future of the Town of Liberty

A. Continue working with the Liberty Police Department in search of a resolution to their operational needs. Their building was designed and used as a medical building not a police department. I am not in favor of building a new Town Hall and Police Department combined at a price of $1,500,000 $2,000,000. The existing Town Hall is suitable for the needs of our population. The only changes I see to Town Hall are lowering the ceiling in council chambers to 9’ providing better acoustics for sound. The ceiling was in my budget as Mayor, but was overturned for the possibility of building a new Town Hall.

The council chambers or previous court room was a dream of an architect, but never feasible as a meeting room because it is almost impossible to hear someone speak without a microphone.

B. In reference to the Police Department options I see includes expanding, renovating and repairing the existing building or find a suitable location or new building. If the Police Department is relocated to a different facility I am not in favor of spending thousands and thousands of dollars making the existing building disappear. That money can be used to renovate the building for other offices, classrooms, or meeting rooms. A local contractor had submitted a quote to repair the building for $60,000. That is only a little more that it would cost to demolish it.

C. Continue to push for voluntary annexation and development of property at Old Liberty Rd. Our legislators in Raleigh eliminated forced annexation years ago limiting our footprint as a source of additional revenue.

D. Continue working with the EDC for development of property on Old 421 Rd. as an industrial site.

E. Continue supporting and creating events or celebrations bringing people to Town for food, merchandise, fellowship and entertainment F. Maintain an open mind and listen to the needs of the people of Liberty.

G. Continue finding ways to manage the budget without raising taxes

Planning pays in retirement Personal savings are key to living comfortably Michael doesn’t see himself living on the beach when he retires, but he’d like to vacation there with his wife.
