Look At Liberty Over This Year

After hearing so many people say they do not see many things happening in Liberty, I decided it would be a great time to look back at some of the great things happening in our little town.

Sometimes we get so busy and miss small things around us. I had the pleasure of sitting down with our Mayor Filmore York and reviewed Liberty. We decided to look at 2017 as a whole year. So here we go with things we can fill positive about our little town.

Look At Liberty Over This Year

Continued from page 1 As most of you can see from media the Mega Site is getting a lot of attention.

The state and county Economic Development is working hard on this. The town has two new wells on line now that adds to our town water supplies. One well is pulling 60 gallons per minute and the other one is pulling 200 gallons per minute. Both new wells came from grants the town received for 1/2 million dollars. Also the town is working hard to improve our streets in and around Liberty in cooperation with DOT. As you can see there has been several resurfacing project just completed. The Public Library received and unrestricted funds from the estate of of Frank and Ella Lowe for $125,000. If you have not been down N Smith ST in Liberty, you are missing the huge solar farm that is going in on 30 acres and being provided by Stratus Solar LLC. The new Veterans Memorial is coming on great beside the Liberty Farmer Market and across the street from Food Lion. Several dilapidated houses and properties have been cleaned up. By means of either removal or controlled burns. Just to list a few , is four on W Swannaona Ave, two on S Greensboro St. One was used for training purposed for the local fire departments. Several update and maintenance items have happen. The Town Hall and Library has new shakes placed. The Reitzel Center has new shingles. Paul Henry Smith Park has began the renovation and upgrades.

Our town is blessed with several great civic groups. The Rose Garden Club has been in full growth and have took on the project of all the Liberty Entrance signs and planted new items. The Liberty Rotary Club has been a blessing to the town. They have three $1000 scholarships out, provided two new picnic areas at the farmer market. While mentioning the Farmers Market. Big shout out from the town grant and joint effort between Liberty Rotary and Supertex and Ed Cummings for our four shelters at the Farmers Market. These clubs along with Liberty Ruritan and Lions Clubs is always open to new members. The Patterson Cottage is still receiving items for the museum and has done great improvements , stop and visit the museum.

Several new business has come to Liberty and others have expanded. Former Rouse Racing building is home to Liberty Outdoors has brought ParkLiner to Liberty that builds light weight fiberglass travel trailers. 2 Sisters Cafe has opened and running great and added a drive in window. The 100 Man Project is running at full steam and added a new car to its fleet to help with transportation issues in Liberty area. Of course Liberty's Antique Festival is one of our largest attraction twice a year that has put Liberty on the map. The old Chevrolet DealershipFormer Tommy Terry Building was purchased and remodeled by owner Brian Minnich for the Hwy 49 Shop. Their is a new Liberty Ice Cream Parlor in shopping center next to Liberty Family Pharmacy. Edwards Woods on Old Liberty Road doubles in size. Koopman Dairy on Ramseur Julian Road is doubling in size from 1700 to 3000 cows per day. The old Fidelity Bank on N Greensboro St will me home to the SECU bank now in Liberty. There is numerous others that I know I have forgot to list. We have been very blessed with the joint efforts between the town, chamber, Liberty Redevelopment and the merchants to bring events to Liberty like the growing July Festival and Mayfest. Lets not forget out cruise ins that happen during the summer months.

The biggest thing that we have to be proud of is that our town is a great community that is made up of citizens that work to get things done. We may not always see the same way, but when needed we pull together. Make a point to shop and dine local and invest in the local business.

What Is a Quarter Auction and How Does It Work?

A quarter auction is part raffle, part auction, part fundraiser and also a direct sales party. It works a bit like bingo. When you arrive, you will be given a numbered paddle for a donation.

This paddle will have a corresponding numbered chip which will be put into the drawing basket.A few minutes before the auction begins, you'll be able to purchase a second paddle for a donation, if you wish. The direct sales vendors will have items up for "auction". These items will be on display forabout an hour after the doors open - you can see what will be up for auction and decide which items you're interested in. Once the auction begins, the announcer or one of the helpers will hold up the item that's up for bid and will announce whether the item is a "one quarter" or "two quarter" bid. If you’re interested in bidding, you'll put one or two quarters (whatever was announced) for EACH paddle you intend to bid with.

So if you have two paddles, want to bid with both to double your chances, and the item is a "one quarter" bid, you'll put .50 in the bucket and raise your paddle(s). If you have two paddles and decide to only bid with one, you only pay .25 BUT you MUST choose only one numbered paddle to bid wi th. A worker will be walking from table to table with a bucket to collect bids. The announcer will then draw a number to find a winner. If they draw your number and you had bid on the item, hooray! You just won an awesome item at a great price! If they draw your number and you did NOT bid, just call out "no bid!" and they’ll continue to draw numbers until they find a winner.

There may be various raffles and cash and carry items available through the evening - the announcer and workers will help explain how those work. Be sure to bring quarters, but if you forget or run out, there will be rolls of quarters available for purchase at the event. If it all sounds complicated, relax. Everything will be explained again once you get to the auction, and you'll catch on in no time and you'll love it!

Newsletter Liberty Chamber of Commerce November 2017 Business After Hours: The Liberty Chamber held its grand finale of BAH events for the year, at Liberty Advisors. JB Griffith, his wife Lisa and office manager Amy Hutcherson hosted a lovely reception on October 24th. Many guests, clients and business personnel gathered for the final chamber networking opportunity of the year. JB utilized the occasion to honor a Modern Woodman of America “Hometown Hero” Award to Tim Nelson. It was a pleasure to mix business with local notoriety.

On Saturday December 2, 2017 prepare to celebrate Christmas in Liberty. The afternoon will start the festivities with the Chamber’s annual Christmas parade at 2:30 on Greensboro St. Immediately following, in the downtown Liberty area of Depot St & Swannanoa Ave., we will continue the Christmas Celebration with music, pictures with Santa, fun, and festivities. New this year, we will feature a “Holiday Market” where you can do some of your holiday shopping from local vendors selling holiday gift items from 2-6pm. The finale will be the lighting of the Christmas tree.

Date: First Saturday in December; December 2, 2017.

Parade Start Time: 2:30pm Parade Route: The parade route will follow Greensboro Street from the 500 block of North Greensboro to the 200 block of South Greensboro St. Parade Entry Fee: $10.00 Parade Registration: Parade registration forms are available at the following locations: 1) on line at www. libertychambernc.com 2) Liberty Public Library information table. 3) Liberty Post office information bulletin board 4) Chamber Caboose office 5) Some chamber businesses Parade registrations along with the $10 fee can be mailed to the Chamber at PO Box #986 Liberty, NC 27298. Pre-registration is preferred, however same day registration will be allowed.

Parade Registration Verification: All parade entries will be verified for registration and payment the day of the parade.

Parade Entry line up: Luther Ave and Greenbriar St. Parade End: Parade will end at the 200 block of S. Greensboro St. in the “old Dollar General” parking lot.

Floats: Cash Prizes will be awarded to the 1st Place, 2nd Place and 3rd Place winners of homemade floats. Floats will be judged by three non-chamber board affiliated persons of the community.

Float Winners: will be awarded cash prizes at the Tree Lighting event.

Celebrate Christmas in Liberty Festivities: Music: Christmas music, holiday favorites, plus a variety of local musical artist will perform on stage at the Christmas tree lighting event. Starting at 3pm.

Stage location: Will be at the intersection of Swannanoa Ave and Depot St. Santa: Santa and Mrs. Claus will be the last vehicle in the parade. Mr & Mrs Santa will also be available for pictures during the festivities.

Holiday Shopping will be in full swing at our local retail business in the downtown area as well as throughout Liberty. Shop Local!

Holiday Market: 2pm-6pm. A unique holiday shopping experience will be available on Depot St. as local vendors promote their handmade or individual business holiday gift items.

Support Local!

Donations: Canned food donations will be accepted to help support our local food bank.

Free: Admission to all the festivities will be at no charge. In the spirit of Christmas there will be many free items and giveaways. However there will also be items for sale.

Tree Lighting: The finale of the event will be the lighting of the Christmas Tree at approximately 5:30.

The Liberty Elementary Service club

was selected to present their work at the NC Service Learning Summit on November 16th at UNC-Pembroke. Stephen Beeson, Zoey Pugh, Kaylee Shepherd, Madison Hicks, Amelia Lackey, and Kalyan Currin will represent Liberty at the summit. Last year, the club created a food/clothing closet and built a community garden. This year they will continue the food/ clothing closet and expand the garden to be able to serve more people.

Sapphire Cloggers Shout Out To Sapphire Cloggers. For they competed October 13th at the North Carolina State Fair Folk Festival. Over 30 Liberty dancers took the stage throughout the day.

The most common causes of painful shoulders are trauma, repetitive motion injuries, sports-related injuries or general wear and tear over time. Chronic overuse is the main reason why people develop shoulder problems.

If you are experiencing pain in your shoulder, ask yourself these questions: ■ Is your shoulder stiff? Can you rotate your arm in all the normal positions?

■ Does it feel like your shoulder could pop out or slide out of the socket?

■ Do you lack the strength in your shoulder to carry out your daily activities?

We should be up and ready to accept your UPS drop offs or shipment processing within the next few weeks. Additional UPS signage will be installed at the Gallery when setup is complete. UPS has teamed up with Package Express Centers to manage the implementation of and provide personal support for the Small-Town America channel of distribution. Liberty was the perfect location for such a center.

As a Certified Retail Provider we will offer UPS shipment processing, boxes, packing materials, tape, etc. UPS packages with a return label can be dropped off "Free of Charge". We will be using UPS Certified shipping software, scales and scanner.

November 2017 News from the 100 Man Project, Inc. As we approach this Thanksgiving Season let us be mindful of the many blessings that been bestowed on the 100 Man Project, Inc. these past few years. The people of this area have been so gracious to us with donations so we may assist those people in Liberty/ Staley area who do not have transportation to and from medical appointments.

Be on the lookout for us this year sporting our two new vehicles in the Christmas Parade.

We are so proud of what the people of Liberty/Staley area have accomplished to assist others that no other community in the area have available to their people.

Notice of Proposed Repeal of Health Rule for Post Exposure Management of Dogs and Cats Last year, the National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians issued new guidelines regarding rabies control and post-exposure management of dogs and cats. In September, 2016, the Randolph County Board of Health adopted a local rule to incorporate these measures in Randolph County. North Carolina State law regarding rabies control measures has now been amended to reflect these same rabies control measures. The Randolph County Board of Health therefore intends to repeal its local rule at its meeting on November 13, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in the Randolph County Board of Education Meeting Rooms A & B, 2222 South Fayetteville Street, Asheboro, North Carolina. Copies of the rule to be repealed are available in the office of the clerk to the board of county commissioners and at the local health department.

Since the control measures contained in this rule are now contained in state law, the repeal of this rule should result in no change in rabies response in Randolph County.

Chicken Pie Supper SAT, NOV 4, 2017 11:00 AM Location: Fellowship Hall across from the church at 7991 Ferguson Rd, Liberty, NC Holly's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church is hosting it's annual Chicken Pie Supper. The Ladies Auxiliary will be cooking homemade chicken pie and green beans. They will also serve potato salad, slaw, and rolls.

Each plate will have a hearty serving of Chicken Pie, green beans, potato salad, coleslaw, and a roll. Guests will pick out one serving of the many varieties of desserts baked by our ladies along with a choice of drink.

Choices are water, tea, and lemonade. We offer both eat in and to go options. Plates are $10.00 each with a portion of the proceeds to be donated to the church Hope Fund for families in need.

Annual Veterans Day Luminary Service Planned for November 11

Grand Queen Kinley Elizabeth Ferguson was crowned Overall Grand Queen at the 10th Annual Little Miss & Mister Mid-State Tractor Heritage Pageant sponsored by the Mid-State Tractor Heritage Association on October 14, 2017. Kinley was also awarded Best Smile. This pageant is a community pageant designed to build selfconfidence, have fun, and raise funds for the MidState Tractor Heritage Scholarship Fund. The purpose of the Mid State Tractor Heritage Association Inc. is to raise funds for their scholarships that go out to graduating seniors from Randolph County High Schools who are going into agricultural related studies. Kinley is an eighth grader at Northeast Randolph Middle School. She is a captain of the reigning county champions cheerleading team at NERMS, a member of BETA Club and NERMS soccer team.

Kinley maintains an honor roll status and attends Freedom Family Church. She is the daughter of Jeff Ferguson, Kasey and Kevin Gardner and is the big sister to Karis Ferguson. Proud grandparents include Mary and Barney Campbell, Joan and Billy Williamson, Buck and Lou Ella Ferguson.

The Pilot Club of Asheboro will hold its annual Veterans Day Luminary Service on Saturday, November 11 at 5:30 pm in front of the historic Randolph County Courthouse. Luminaries, in honor of or in memory of veterans, can be purchased from Pilot Club members from 3:30 p.m. until about a half hour prior to the service. The Veterans Day Parade begins at 4 p.m. and ends at the courthouse and Veterans Memorial on Worth Street. Each luminary costs $5.00 and includes a flag in addition to the name of the veteran being honored or remembered and his/her branch of service. Those attending are also asked to bring canned food to be used in the luminaries and to be donated to Christians United Outreach Center after the service.

The program to follow the lighting of the luminaries will include an invocation from Reverend Caitlin Tremper of First United Methodist Church, speaker Daniel W. Efird Jr., the reading of the names of the veterans being honored, and patriotic music by Zoe Faircloth. The Southwestern Randolph High School JROTC will present the colors and the Randolph County Honor Guard will provide the 21-gun salute and Taps to conclude the program.

Luminaries may also be preordered by mailing a check made out to the Pilot Club of Asheboro to P O Box 3107, Asheboro NC 27204.

Include the veteran’s name and branch of service along with the name and contact information for the sender.

Great Family Moves To Area And Invest In Liberty With Two Business Will and Kelly Raymond moved to the Julian area back in July of 2011 along with children, Heather Kowacich, Dannielle Kowacich, Sydney and Gaven. In June of 2016 they decided they loved the Liberty community and moved inside our great little town. The family has always tried to be involved in the community in every way they could find. They have took pride to know they are part of the Liberty community. They have decided to step up to the plate and help bring more life back to the local business in our town by owning two businesses. Wanting to see Liberty grow as a community they purchased the Tropica Tanning Salon in downtown Liberty.

They have plans to make it grow and hope this saves a business in town. They have listened to the customers and took action. They have extended the hours of the business and kept regular hours. They realize customers are the most important part so customer service is their main goal. However, they did not stop here.

After loosing the local bakery and ice cream shop again in town, they looked into this area.

Everyone misses a local ice cream spot in our town. So on Friday Oct 27 they decided to invest in a new business also. This would be Liberty Ice Cream Parlor which is located in the shopping center with Liberty Family Pharmacy.

They have added a game room and remodeled the building. They have numerous more additions on the horizon. They also researched the best ice cream to bring something new to the area but still keep in NC. THey found Front Porch Carolina Churned Ice Cream and Deluxe Ice Cream form Mooresville that has been in business since 1924. The Raymond’s said they love this area and are excited to be part of the growth of our great little town. So now community I reach out to you know, Shop Local and Dine Local. I hear from everyone that you want more business in our area, but guess what we have to do our part and that is to support them. Please make a point to visit each of their locations and lets help show this family Liberty will be supporting them. Took my grandkids there and they gave them a thumbs up.

Carolina passed away on October 30, 2017 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Shirley was a life-long native of Guilford County, born to the late James Elijah Hill and the late Bernice Arrington Hill of Julian, NC. She was a graduate of Nathanael Greene High School where she excelled in High School Basketball.

Shirley was married to the late Rigdon “Bob” Smith for 46 years. She and her husband raised their family on a tobacco farm in Julian. Shirley was a long-time devoted member of Julian United Method Church and was a musician there for over 30 years. Shirley was passionate about her family and faith, loved playing golf, bridge and was always a NC State Wolfpack supporter. After a long week’s work in the tobacco field, her husband and three children enjoyed many weekends at Lake Norman enjoying what now are wonderful life-long memories. Shirley will be remembered for her love of life, was a loved Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother. Shirley showed passion in whatever she was doing.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Bob and brothers Tom Hill and Bill Hill. Into Every Life a Leaf Must Fall

By Warren Dixon It’s an ill wind that blows no leaves.

As if on cue, the leaves began falling last weekend.

The Ash tree in the back yard has already dropped most of its leaves in the yard. It’s always the first to sprout leaves in the spring and the first to let go in the fall. The Ash leaves are pretty much homebodies, living in the gutters, on the deck and on the basement steps. They wouldn’t go over to the neighbor’s yard even in a hurricane. And last weekend the rest of the leaves started to get serious.

Even the pine tree began to shed its needles. There are leaves lying flat on their backs in the back yard, leaves standing straight up in the high grass in the front, like little tombstones to summer. It was as if the Great Leaf Blower in the sky cranked up and cut loose. Not that I have anything against leaves, mind you. I actually traveled to Vermont once just to look at leaves. You might think that you don’t have to go far to see pretty leaves in the fall and you would be correct. Randolph County sports the prettiest leaves around, with sights that would rival the Blue Ridge Mountains. But to see magnificent leaves, you have to go to Vermont. North Carolina’s leaves might be a religious experience, but Vermont’s are the Holy Land. The trouble with leaves, though, or at least most leaves, is that some won’t leave and others won’t stay put. A leaf, by any other name, will still pile up in your gutters. You have to hand it to leaves. They know when to let go. They don’t hang around past their prime, trying to make a comeback like, say, Brett Favre. A leaf knows when it’s time to move on. You won’t catch a leaf hanging around the service station bragging about the good ole days. When it’s a leaf’s time to go, it steps aside gracefully, moving over to make way for the younger generation. God must have loved leaves, He made so many of them. A leaf is an orphan and has no home. You may have a tree-less yard resembling the Mojave Desert but you will still have leaves. It’s an ill wind that blows no leaves. Before autumn is over and winter appears, neighbors’ leaves from blocks away will pile up in your yard like snow drifts. And, if you can hold on long enough and resist the urge to gather these trespassing leaves, they may one day return to their owners. In the leaf business, possession is 9/10’s of the law. We are blessed with leaves that fall in shifts, like dominos, all through autumn into spring. If they’re not falling from our trees, they’re blowing in from out neighbors’. When all the neighborhood trees are bare, eighteen wheelers traveling down Highway 49 bring in leaves from points all over North Carolina and scatter them in our yard. The history of leaves in America is a long one. The members of the Lost Colony, certain they were about to be lost and unable to get the men to stop and ask directions, faxed in this memo to their families and friends in England: “We are Knee Deepe in Leafes and Have Not a Rake in the Entire Place. Will be Forced to Move Soon or Suffocate…” The Pilgrims reported that, “We About Loste a Table Full of Foode, Cranberry Sauce and Punkin Pye, So Deepe Were the Leaves…”

Later, during the Civil War, Robert E. Lee complained that “so many of the men have deserted this fall, claiming to have gone home to rake leaves…” Pioneers, traveling west by covered wagon, were impressed with the Great Plains, writing back to relatives back east of the “rich soil and lack of leaves,” There were so few leaves, one pioneer wrote, that before crossing the Rockies, “many have discarded their leaf blowers…” There are many modern day methods of handling leaves. Many people prefer to let a sleeping leaf lie. There are at least two benefits to this: (1.) The leaves kill the grass (2.) Considerably less mowing has to be done. If you live in the city where you have leaf pickup in the fall, you may rake or blow your leaves to the curb. This way they will eventually be propelled by passing cars and the elements back into your yard or to the neighbors’. We prefer to compost our leaves. We have a compost pile, but many years the leaves don’t reach the compost pile until spring. By this time they have not only killed the grass in our back yard, but also traveled around the neighborhood like giant drifting sand dunes, killing the neighbors’ grass, too. We use a combination of raking and leaf blowing methods to gather these leaves in piles, then employ the sophisticated sheet procedure to drag them to the compost pile. This way, in no time at all and with only a month’s worth of work, you can soon have $1.98 worth of rich, twig-filled, compost. Just remember: If everyone lit just one little candle, you still couldn’t burn all the leaves.

The Liberty Public Work's Street Department maintains over 22 miles of municipal streets and approximately 8.50 miles of state road or a regular basis. The Street Department oversees the paving, storm water drainage, sidewalks and curbs. The public works department is also working on sidewalk renovation project.

We have completed some major repairs and will continue to put sidewalk repairs and new sidewalks into our future plans.

The Street Department crews also provide for a year-round lawn debris pick up (During our non leaf season all leaves and grass clippings must be put in bags and placed at the street to be picked up) and a major leaf removal effort in the Fall (normally November thru January). You'll also see the Grounds Maintenance crews of the Street Department out mowing public areas; parks, green areas, municipal lawns, etc., around Town.

The Town of Liberty will start the annual leaf collection the week of November 7, 2016. The Last day of curbside leaf collection will be February 28, 2017. Please keep in mind that all leaves must be within 5 feet of the edge of the road, if they extend more than 5 feet we will get the first 5 feet, then you must rake the rest to the edge of the road. Please also keep in mind that we run the leaf collection in a route, therefore we will get to you when we reach you in the route. Thank you for your cooperation.

It's that time of the year again. We are removing leaves from the Right Of Way as quickly as we can. However, it is a formidable task. Our leaf vac has its limitations; it can not pick up wet leaves; it can not reach over 4 feet from the edge of the paved roadway. In addition, the same crew that picks up leaves, also is responsible for insuring that you get fresh clean water, your toilets flush away efficiently, your garbage is picked up, and the streets are open and clearly marked. WHEW! They never get to slow down. "Please Bear With Us" Please remember the following requests when disposing of your raked leaves: *Have leaves in tight piles on the edge of the street by Monday Morning. Remember that the leaf vac machine can only reach leaves right on the edge of the roadway. *Don’t mix limbs, twigs and loose leaves together. We use two different pieces of equipment to remove each, and each is accomplished on different days of the week. *Don’t place anything in your leaf pile that could damage the leaf vacuum machine. *If you miss the leaf removal day, then bag the leaves for removal later in the week. It may also be helpful for you to know that during wet weather, whereas we are unable to "VAC" the leaves, we CAN pick them up if they are "Bagged".

"The Pastor's Porch” with Pastor Don Hey guys, Pastor Don here again, sitting on the front porch, petting the neighbors dog and looking out at my lawn that needs mowing! And as usual, having some conversation with God. Today in our coversation I hear a song in the background.

Goes something like this, "thank you Lord, I just want to thank you Lord, thank you Lord, I just want to thank you Lord...........For all that you have given to me..........For all You've done in my life..........Thank you Lord, Thank you Lord". Some of you know it, so sing along! As we head into the season of Thanksgiving, I am thinking about and being reminded of all the things that I have to be thankful for. I am sitting here thanking God for all of His many blessings. I am reflecting on where I was at one time in my life and where I am at today. All the praise, honor, and glory going to God. Every thing I am, I have, and I get to do is because of Him! Thank you Lord!

The funny part of my thankfulness to God is one of the things that I am most thankful for and thats God's discipline and correction in my life. Me being the knucklehead that I am, God's boot to my backside is much appreciated. Many days I am saying thank you Lord for that nudge of encouragement to lead me in the right direction. Thank you Lord!

The Bible says in Hebrews 12:6 "For the LORD disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child." It also says in Thessalonians 5:18 "Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus”. So in this season of Thanksgiving, be thankful for all things. Be thankful for all of Gods blessings in your life.

Even the whoopings you might take every now and then.

Knowing that it is done out of love from God for our well being and His glory!

Mt Hope Fire Dept. Fill the Truck- We will begin our yearly effort to make sure all children have a gift on Christmas morning! Every year this is a bigger and bigger donation of toys to local kids, please continue to help us in this effort.
