Matthew Relief - Help Out The Randolph County Sheriff's Office in partnership with Asheboro PD, Archdale PD, Liberty PD, Ramseur PD, and Randleman PD; will be conducting a supply drive for Hurricane Matthew flood victims. We are collecting canned food, bottled water, clothing, toiletries, household cleaning supplies and pet food.

CANE CREEK FRIENDS MEETING ANNUAL FALL FESTIVAL IS NOV 12 Cane Creek Friends Meeting Fall Festival is Saturday, November 12 at the church at 719 W. Greensboro-Chapel Hill Road, Snow Camp.

AMERICAN PICKERS To Film In North Carolina

Fight Cancer with Your Fork Holiday Style

Mike Wolfe, Frank Fritz, and their team are excited to return to North Carolina! They plan to film episodes of the hit series AMERICAN PICKERS throughout the region this fall.

AMERICAN PICKERS is a documentary series that explores the fascinating world of antique ‘picking’ on History. The hit show follows Mike and Frank, two of the most skilled pickers in the business, as they hunt for America’s most valuable antiques. They are always excited to find sizeable, unique collections and learn the interesting stories behind them.

As they hit the back roads from coast to coast, Mike and Frank are on a mission to recycle and rescue forgotten relics. Along the way, the Pickers want to meet characters with remarkable and exceptional items. The pair hopes to give historically significant objects a new lease on life, while learning a thing or two about America’s past along the way.

Mike and Frank have seen a lot of rusty gold over the years and are always looking to discover something they’ve never seen before. They are ready to find extraordinary items and hear fascinating tales about them. AMERICAN PICKERS is looking for leads and would love to explore your hidden treasure. Healthy eating and exercise can sometimes seem like a burden, but it doesn’t have to be. It can be as simple as choosing an apple over a cupcake or walking for 10 minutes instead of sitting. Besides helping manage weight, healthy eating and exercise can also help lower your risk for diabetes, high blood pressure and even cancer.

Karen Pfohl, RD, LDN, clinical dietitian at Randolph Cancer Center, will host a community seminar called Fight Cancer with Your Fork – Holiday Style. The event will be held on Thursday, November 10th from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. in the Private Dining Room at Randolph Hospital. Participants are invited to learn about how to alter some traditional holiday meals making them more healthful - while still tasting fantastic. During her presentation, Pfohl will demonstrate a healthy and delicious holiday dish. Participants will have a chance to taste the dish and take the recipe home with them.

The Liberty Leader Newspaper Nov 2016 Col Guy Troy Dedicates Fields Col Troy shared, “ I was privileged to have as a classmate of mine at West Point George Patton, General Patton's son. He was a fine, highly decorated soldier and retired as a MG. He commanded the 11th Cav in Vietnam 68-69.

When he retired he became a farmer at his farm in Mass, growing produce. He named his fields for soldiers who were killed under his command. In a recent conversation with his widow she reminded me of his project.” He also added, “I commanded the 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry, 25 Division in Hawaii for 22 months. As my command tour was completed I did not have the honor and privilege to go with the squadron to Vietnam. Instead I put them on the boat. I have always felt that they were my troops since I trained them and kept track of their progress in country.Although not a part of the Squadron in combat I was proud that they continued with their wonderful reputation as evidenced the Squadron receiving the Presidential Unit Citation for their action during the Tet offensive. I was G-2 of the Division at that time. Thanks to the idea from my classmate, I decided I could honor some of my troops by naming some of my farm fields for those who had served with me.” The signs are shown below. There is one from each of the line Troops (A, B and C).There was very short dedication on 18 Oct at 10 AM to dedicate these fields along with a great ceremony. Some of their family members was there. A great addition of signing the national anthem and Our County Honor Guard (which Col Guy Troy is part of) will provide the rifle salute and Taps. You can drive down Troy Estate Road to see these field of dedication.

Eleven Students Chosen for 10th Annual Fountain-Luria Student Leadership Academy at RCC Eleven students have been chosen for Randolph Community College’s Fountain-Luria Student Leadership Academy based on a competitive process that considered leadership experience, leadership potential, and a letter of reference from a faculty member. The group includes seven traditional RCC students and four Randolph Early College High School students.

The participants completed their first session on Saturday, Oct. 1, which included teambuilding exercises led by Jeremy Jackson, associate director of camp operations at Camp Caraway, and his wife, Michelle; and a presentation by RCC President Robert S. Shackleford on the topic “Portraits of Leadership.” A second session scheduled for Oct. 13 will include a presentation on group dynamics by Dr. Joanne Buck, department chair for English and Humanities at Guilford Technical Community College; and a session on Servant Leadership by Dr. J.W. Kelley, RCC vice president for student services.

This is the tenth year for RCC’s Student Leadership Academy, which is named after local leaders Dr. Stuart Fountain and Dr. Alan Luria, who have supported the project since its inception in 2008. It’s Time to Check Your Medicare Plans for 2017!

The Medicare Part D Open Enrollment Period is from October 15 - December 7. During this time you can enroll in a Medicare Part D Drug Plan or Medicare Advantage Plan to best fit your needs for 2017. Although your current plan may have been fine for 2016 it may not be the best fit for next year.

Premiums, deductibles, medical and prescription copays all change from year to year, as well as restrictions on medications. Some plans will no longer be available next year and there will be some plans that are new to our area. That is why it is so important to review your Medicare coverage during Open Enrollment. You do not want to be caught by surprise in January when it is too late to change!

Randolph County Senior Adults is the SHIIP Coordinating Site for Randolph County. Trained counselors from the NC Dept of Insurance - Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) will be available Monday-Thursday 8:30am-4:00pm at The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Adult REC, 347 W. Salisbury Street in Asheboro. Even if we have helped you before, it is important to bring your medications; red, white & blue Medicare card; and list of your doctors.

Due to the volume of people we serve we cannot make appointments, however, if you are unable to come in and wait for assistance you can pick up a Plan Finder Tool form at any of our four locations (Asheboro, Randleman, Archdale and Liberty) or one can be mailed or emailed to you for you to complete and return. We will then contact you with the results and let you know if you should keep your current plan or switch to a different one. If another plan is better, we can enroll you so you will have a new plan for 2017 that will best fit your needs. First it was great to know we had two of our own to go and take care of down east relief from the hurricane flooding. During the October Council meeting the Mayor York honored Andy Michael and Cameron Howard for their service in the special project. The fireman said they had an amazing but humbling experience in Flair Bluff, NC and surrounding area..

While there they fought fire in waste deep water and helped pump flooded water. They were deployed to provide fire protection while their.

Also a big shout out to our City Council at work to remove abandon dwellings from our communities, not an easy problem to solve but we as a Council are committed to continue to work on. With this being said, in October they burned a house and also got some training in . The Liberty Fire Chief Talbot shared, “Thank you to station 3,7,36 Guilford 45, Randolph County Fire Marshal's Office and Liberty Public Works. Everyone worked hard and safe. Could not have done it without you. You guys and girls are awesome!”

Liberty Police Serving On Friday 10/28/2016 at approx. 2:40 a.m. an Officer of the Liberty Police Department was involved in a pursuit of a stolen SUV that had been involved in an armed robbery in Wake County. On Old Highway 421 north of the town limits of Liberty the vehicle departed the roadway and collided with several trees.

As the officer approached the SUV, shots were fired by one or more of the suspects. The officer was not injured. Troopers from the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Deputies from Guilford County Sheriff’s Office arrived shortly thereafter to assist. A perimeter was set up and a search was initiated by members of the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team and the Guilford County Sheriff's Office Emergency Response Team as well as K-9 units. Three suspects are in custody at this time as a result of the immediate response and close cooperation of several agencies.

Cristopher Pagan (18 yo) of Raleigh, Kolani Coates (22 yo) of Durham and Montravius Malik Montgomery (20 yo) of Apex were arrested and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.

Montravius Malik Montgomery is also charged with Absconding from Wake County Probation.

The investigation is ongoing by several agencies.

Parade Route: The parade route will be the same as last year. It will follow the straight route from the 500 block of N. Greensboro St (the Freedom Family Church Parking lot) to the 200 block of S. Greensboro St at the “old” Dollar General Store parking lot.

Christmas Parade Volunteers: The Christmas Parade is a big deal. It is a major production. And we need volunteers to help pull this event off each year. If you, your business or organization would like to participate, please step up. We would love to have you involved. Contact the Chamber (336) 622-4937 *Keep in mind that the Chamber is willing to provide Community Service Verification letters.

These letters would acknowledge those who are willing to volunteer time, or participate in community service activities. These can be used to enhance college applications, or job resumes.

Tree Lighting: The Annual Liberty Christmas Tree Lighting Event will be held from 4-6pm immediately following the parade. The festivities will take place in the vicinity of the Liberty Christmas Tree at the 100 Block of Greensboro St. and Swannanoa Ave. Come enjoy, an afternoon of shopping in Liberty. There will be plenty to help you get into the Spirit of Christmas.

Magic Snow on main street; Holiday music that will include your favorite Christmas carols; hot cocoa, free hot dogs, and a whole lot smore!

Come warm up beside the fire pit to roast marshmallows and make smores. Even if you have been naughty or nice, you can have your family portrait made with the special guest: Santa & Mrs. Claus. Keep in mind they are making a list and checking it twice. The highlight of the event will conclude the festivities with the lighting of the Liberty Christmas Tree featuring the new star, and a new way to display the lights that will protect the tree. Providence Grove High School Boys’ Soccer Appreciation & Recognition I would like to tell you a story about a group of kids from the Liberty community. A group, which I think, deserves recognition for their accomplishments as well as recognition as being part of the community of Liberty. We all have an appreciation for our kids and the many activities that we "run" them to, and to which we dedicate all of our spare time. Church, Scouting, sports, and especially high school sports. We love our high schools. Our football, basketball, and baseball team rivalries.

These are our power sports. Our legacy sports.This year I have had the great privilege to coach Boys Soccer at Providence Grove High School. And like many of the other sports in which our kids participate, the members of our team are not as well recognized, individually or as a team. So, I would like to introduce you to our soccer team and to the young men of this community that play boys soccer at PGHS. Our team consists of 22 players and their families. We began conditioning in late June of this year, during the 90 degree summer days. We practiced 4 days a week and during season we played 2 games per week. We start 5 to 6 first year players and the remaining positions of an 11 man field are covered by the returning players. We currently have a record of 9-5-3. And we look forward to post season play.We are a team of 11 first year players and 11 returning players of which 5 are seniors.

All 22 players have contributed to the team’s success this year. Here are their names, their class, and the communities they represent.

Wayne Alan Moody, 58, of Staley died Sunday, October 16, 2016 at his home.

Mr. Moody was born in Chatham County on January 27, 1958 the son of Samuel Matthew and Mary Ruth Poe Moody. Wayne was formerly employed with Cook Out Restaurant in maintenance. He loved playing golf, working in his garden, cooking and grilling, and loved to hangout in his building. Also he enjoyed shopping at the Liberty Food Lion Store. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Sam Moody, Jr., Paul and Toby Moody. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Shannon Adkins Moody, daughters; Zandra N. McCrimmon and husband, Aaron “SpongeBob” of Ramseur and Ginger M. Carswell and husband, Shawn of Trinity; sons; Dwayne A. Moody and wife, Jenna of Bear Creek and Trevor G. Moody of the home, sister; Brenda Griffin of Tramway, brothers; Ted Moody of Lincolnton, Terry Moody of Goldston, Donnie Moody of Siler City and Lonnie Moody of Liberty; grandchildren; Ty Moody, Cheyenne Bell and Makayla Wilson. The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 18, 2016 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC. The funeral will be Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at 3:00 PM at Sandy Branch Baptist Church, 715 Sandy Branch Church Road, Bear Creek with Preacher Cecil Tucker officiating.

Truly Giving Thanks By: Andy Clapp The time of year has come again, a time when leaves are changing colors, temperatures are cooling, and turkeys are on high alert.

October has given way to November and Thanksgiving arrives on the fourth Thursday of the month. Families will gather together, eating more food than they intended to eat, laugh and reminisce, watch football and say a blessing of thanks for a meal and for the blessings of life. We will thank God for health, for homes, for friends, and for a table overflowing with the meal we spend all year dreaming about. The fourth Thursday will be a day of giving thanks.

Is that what the day was intended to be?

Is this how our lives were designed to be conducted? One day is set aside for giving thanks in which we give thanks for the pleasant, for the things that have gone according to our plan. As children of the Most High God, truly being thankful is much deeper than such an attitude of thankfulness confined to the calm of life. We know that true thankfulness is seen when we can praise in the midst of the storm.

Paul wrote to the Thessalonian people, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NKJV) These words, inspired by God, give us insight into God’s design for who we are to be. As Paul writes, he says that we are to give thanks in everything. True followers of Christ are thankful in each day of the year and in each season of life. Our thankfulness is not based upon circumstances as circumstances constantly change in life. True thankfulness is a gratitude shown for the presence of God in the good and in the bad.

Job faced a season of loss that we could not imagine. In a brief period, he lost his children, his possessions, his wealth, and his health began to suffer. His wife told him to curse God and die, because in her mind, death was better than the existence he was living. Job then shows the attitude of thankfulness in a midst of a storm. He replies to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?” (Job 2:10 NKJV) Job knew that accepting the bad was just as imperative as accepting the good in life. To be able to accept those things, good and bad, is to understand that God is always in charge and we are to be forever thankful that He is in control.

This month is defined by the holiday that tells us to stop and give thanks. The life of a Christian is marked by giving thanks always, in all circumstances, because no matter how bad the season may be that we are in, because of the salvation offered to us by Christ, we can be thankful. We know that what is ahead is far greater than what we are experiencing now. We know that we will be with Christ, which is enough to give thanks for every day.

Advance Care Planning Clinic scheduled at Hospice of Randolph for Nov12th According to national research studies, 71% of Americans have thought about their end-of-life treatment preferences but only 29% of Americans have documented their preferences by completing a Living Will. To assist with this important need, a group of students from Elon University School of Law will be providing FREE services for Hospice of Randolph County to provide an Advance Directives Clinic on Saturday morning, November 12th. The Advance Directives Clinic will take place in the Education Center at Hospice of Randolph County (416 Vision Drive, Asheboro, NC) with hourly sessions at 9am, 10am and 11am. During the hourly sessions, attendees will receive free assistance with the completion of Living Will and Health Care Power of Attorney NC Statuary Forms. No legal service, legal advice or customizable forms will be offered. To help with the process, it is suggested that you bring your license or photo ID, address and phone numbers for individuals desired to be your assigned agents, contact information for son/ daughter or spouse and primary Physician’s name, address and phone number if you have one.
