New Business Pops Up In Downtown Liberty If you have driven downtown Liberty and smells a great smell that brings the thoughts of a day at the state fair or walking along the board walk at the beach, well you are not crazy. That smell would be from the new business calling downtown Liberty home. Becky and Joey Sutphin of Liberty opened up Kettle Corn Business.

They are located at 118 W Swannanoa Ave in Liberty. I love the theme they are going for and that would be country rustic look.

Love seeing the old milk bottles and cafe tables. I had the pleasure of Joey showing me how all these great kettle corn is made. The stainless steel equipment is all new and does a great job. After heating up the oil, Joey dropped in the popcorn. Then I was amazed the flavoring went in also, I got to watch blackberry being made. Before no time the popcorn was going all over the kettle.

Then he dropped in into the tub. Joey then moves the tub of popcorn over to a shaker bin where he moves the popcorn around so all the un-popped kernels fall down in wholes so you get minimum bad in the bag. They have regular sweet and salty kettle corn, caramel, blackberry, buffalo and more. You can buy in the store or be on the lookout for this national branded home cooked Kettle Corn will be in many stores in the area. Becky experienced this kettle corn from Denton Farm Park at Christmas told her husband, lets do this and they did. Please support this great business.

Bell millers restaurant on Main Street she had scrambled hamburgers way back was very good too... I have heard my husband talk about that scrambled hamburger for years... something about they cooked it in water ...

Curtis Theater,Dress barn, Pat N Als, Dairy bar...

Ok Steak n Pizza .... Steakln Pizza at old location where Basils is now ... loved that place... That was my first job there.....and Lucy Shoffner made the Best coconut & Chocolate Pies@ Pat & Al’s The old Citgo and Elmer Holts Garage Definitely Kidd's Drive In. But I have to say my favorite is Mr. Parker's gas station. Still love that Mayberry feel of getting my gas pumped. Just has a small hometown feeling.

How about walking up n down main street shopping... u cud find anything.. Loved the 5 &dime store Liberty Drive Inn with Mrs Pugh & Polly....where was new Pugh and Polly?....They were the women that worked at Liberty Drive Inn Muzzie's, Curtis Theater, Ruth's 5 & dime & Browers..... Oh and Deaton's Drug Store... Liberty Ice House Papa's place, Danette's, Miss Francine Swain We used to get our groceries at BI Rites and then had lunch at Muzzie’s Liberty Bulldogs Sports, Charlie Carter's store, Martin's Appliance, Ruth's 5 and Dime, Deaton's Pharmacy, Muzzie's, and so much more. It was the greatest place to grow up one could ask for. Home My grandparents would come every month and we would go to the Super Dollar Store and i remember Muzzies and Overman's Insurance,Bi Rites..I grew up in Julian..Liberty reminds me of Mayberry...I love living here cause it small..Walking down to the Curtis Theater when i was in the 2nd grade going to see Tommy Sawyer..aww memories...

Kidd's and the old Theatre, I watched several movies there throughout my younger years, two being my all time faves, E.T. and The Goonies Jack Patterson’s business You could call your grocery order in They would get it tougher for you , then you pull up and they would load it in your car and you could pay when you got paid The Dairy Bar. Carters small engine repair shop Kidd's Martin's appliance ,Danette's bush TV, Liberty hardware and Curtis theater... Home Ruth’s dime store two grocery stores on main browser clothing pickets clothing and another one across the street was a expensive clothing store and another dime store on right hand corner where Semore Phillips had his business their was a lot way back

Kidd's Drive in (Muzzys in my day), Curtis Theatre, Liberty Drug Store for their ice cream, after school practices, lol This makes me sad to read. I’ve only been in Liberty a few years now and I wish I’d know this downtown back then. Sad how the small town commerce is disappearing...

HOME!! My small water tower town, where my momma and dad are. Where my kids are known and loved by the community and teachers. Eating breakfast at Kidd's with the regulars and Sunday mornings with my church family. Where church members line the road with signs welcoming and encouraging students on the first day of school. The BEST fireworks display around. Where Veteran's are honored and our Seniors are respected. Where you can still find sodas in glass bottles and grab a moon pie. Good conversation at every gas station and greasy spoon around. Yard sales and Liberty Recreation athletic games on Saturdays. It's a smile and wave when you pass someone on the road. Liberty is and always will be HOME. Ernie Allred’s grocery store, the Progressive grocery store, Cheese Kime’s furniture store, Liberty Machinery, Troy Smith’s Ford dealership, Mr. Swaim’s Gulf station, PawPaw Perry’s Esso station, the pool hall, Liberty Building & Loan, Brower’s, Chatham Bank, Harry Baldwin’s mother’s jewelry store. . .

Don’t get ,e started!

I remember there was a gold fish pond around part of the Liberty Savings and Loan building My husband was originally from Kentucky and when he got his discharge from the Army, we were living in Germany getting ready to come back to the states. I told him I would go with him anywhere he wanted to live. I just assumed we'd go back to Kentucky or Ohio where his family lived. He told me without hesitation, he wanted to live in Liberty. In the short time he was here when we were dating, he said it always felt like home.

That's how I would describe Liberty...home!

Oh yes Liberty in our day was a booming town . Always something to do .

M&M restaurant ... that’s where Lucy Shoffner worked & made those awesome pies... Lovett’s & Deaton’s Drug Store... Holts Amoco corner below First Union....Ford Tractor and the Freeman Ford Dealership Still love that we have fresh flowers available in town Swaim’s Gulf Station On corner across street from Garett’s Florist....1st Baptist Church was located where BB&T is today...

Lineberry Oil became Lowe & Routh....Old Post office was located beside Liberty Auto Parts...Western Auto was located where Yuonne’s Hair Salon is today... Service Station was where Doug Clark & Terry Caviness Are today ...Andy Bunton ran it for years & then I think Mitchell Staley had it... Jennie’s Florist ... well it was Hardin’s Florist first& Green Houses The smell of lacquer in the air from the chair factories.

The first day my son went to Liberty School, no other relatives in town, and they made us feel welcome. Mrs. Jessup and Ms Monroe.

Muzzie’s!... Owned by Muzzie Smith...Later ran by Freddie Joe Redding ... Beef Allred worked there too Liberty School and all my classmates. Brower's and Ila's clothing store, Ruth's 5 & Dime, Liberty Drug on main Street, Wickers Jewelry, most of all Liberty Drive-In lol I remember thinking in kindergarten Tammy must be rich all the money you got to keep at bank lol i was 6. You were always good to me knew i grew up very little always invited me to bday parties. Never judged me by actions of my parents now that i have babies whose mom not doing it. Heard a parent say when i picked Aspen up say i don't want you talking to that girl her mom is a hooker. And she is but don't punish child i had to bite tounge i really wanted to tell her off. But teaching my girls how a real lady acts Y'all bringing back a lot of old memories and we are showing our ages! Lol! Downtown Liberty was a booming place back in its day! Circie had a antique and sewing shop where Carolyn's is....I miss her. I use to walk to her shop after school and then go get us something to drink from the drug store.

Ok, really showing my age...Pete Perry's service station.... It was on the corner where Handy Mart (I think it's Handy Mart) is. Used to walk by it every day going to school. It was across the street from the car wash on the corner, a little red brick building. I think H & M Grain eventually got it's start there It has been restored by a local artist, and moved inside for preservation...but still lives on! PLEASE DO NOT EAT THE DAISIES. Liberty Chair Company. Bush TV Muzzies ( Kidd’s) Bi-rite.

Lowe’s food. Liberty Drive in Western Auto. Dairy Bar. H&M’s tire pool hall M&M restaurant Curtis Theater Keller’s jewelry store and his sister had a jewelry store across the road which is rich jewelry store in Siler city now. Can’t remember who ran it but there was an arcade down Main Street Ruths 5 and dime, Curtis theater, Grace Lutheran Church, Liberty Drug, Muzzies, Dairy Bar, sledding on the hill at Liberty school, pickup games in the gymn, fall festivals, Christmas parade, Freedom park, too many people to even begin to mention.

Brower's store was where we girls would buy white Keds every summer. Even though it's an antique store now, it looks and smells the same.

Used to stop at Swaim station every Sunday morning on the way to Sunday School and get an "old man's coco-cola" from the vending machine. Saturday matinees at Curtis Theatre. Dr. Neal's dentist office with Janice Patterson as his assistant.

Curb service at Muzzie's. Factory whistles that blew at noon and quitting time. Kids could have a paper route if they owned a good bike. Many, many memories of small town living back in the 50's-60's! Just like on Leave it to Beaver! (Or maybe better!)

The fireworks in July are pretty amazing!

Also remember the western auto store . Mr. and Mrs. Gay . And the the barber shop with bill Teague and Steve PattyShaw and also Sylvia Dodson and her husband Gary had a store always loved taking quilting classes with Sylvia. Then Joe Hornaday wife did the Green stamps if anybody remembered that. Downtown I loved the dime store with Mr. and Mrs. Smith I have never lived any where else. I remember all the above very well. I miss the old liberty very much. But you know I still love our town. The people make up for the difference. Been in liberty for 58 years and liberty is where I will stay. And when I die I will rest in liberty!

The Dairy Bar (home of the world famous chef burger), Ruths 5 and dime (only the coolest went in the back way), Pizza Palace (i thought i was out in the town), Petes garage (only the brave stopped her), Muzzies (only the adults saw the inside of this building...lol), Curtis Theater (where we had to stand in line for admission), Bi-Rite (where every little boy rode underneath the cart), western auto (got my first bike from this place), and Liberty Chair (where my dad was employed for many years). Love this town!

As I read all these comments and remember...we all have something very special in common. We have all the sweet memories of our lovely small town and all the wonderful memories we all share. That bonds us regardless of our ages. Thank you my friends for "reliving" the "good ole days”!

On April 1, 1988 (April Fools Day) we moved to Liberty from Fayetteville WV. The only person we knew in Liberty was Linda Curl who rented us the big house we lived in for the next 9 years on Patterson Ave. Jerry Dean Miller was a paramedic and had just gotten a job at Alamance EMS. I soon went to work for Mr Bush downtown developing film. I missed home but we soon settled in. All of my kids went to Liberty School. My oldest Jerry, was in the 8th grade. He and Steve Miller and Beth Miller Lineberry walked to school everyday. We soon came to call Liberty our home and 30 years later Jerry and I and Beth still call Liberty our home. The boys married sisters and moved out west. Thank you Liberty for being so good to us.

Chamber members, Business owners, their employees, local and county public officials all gathered to celebrate Liberty! We were honored to have our 78th District, North Carolina General Assembly representative; Allen McNeil , join us for the evening, as well as Randolph County Commissioner ; Chairman David Allen, and Vice- Chair Darrell Frye. Mayor York, and his wife Debbie, and the new Liberty Town Manager William Doerfer and his wife Chelsea were present. The evening‘s events were held at The Roost at Butler Farm. Dinner was catered by Simply Southern Catering.

Four Saint’s Brewery, provided an on tap option at the Bar. DJ Brian Saunders provided a great selection of dance and dinner music. A silent and live auction added interest and excitement to the night’s events.

Liberty Boy Scouts Food Drive Every February our local Boy Scout Troop 502 participates in Scouting for Food. The scouts pick up canned food left on doorsteps by the citizens of Liberty. The scouts gathered 350 pounds of food. All of the collected food was taken to the Liberty Association of Churches’ Food Bank to be given to people in need in our community. Thank you to everyone who donated food.

Saying Good-bye to a Leader in the Faith By: Andy Clapp His message was Jesus. His delivery distinct. For decades, Billy Graham spoke the words of Jesus, telling others of the cross of Christ, speaking to millions across the world as He followed the call of Christ in his life. A nation looked to him in times of tragedy, his words of peace and comfort enough to make the panic inside subside. Never was it about him – it was always about Jesus. As the Lord has kept His promise and taken Billy Graham home, we sit back today and ask, “What now?”. What are we to do now? As our culture has joyously slid deeper into the darkness, one of the brightest lights in our society is now gone. So, what do we do? Thinking about such a reality, I turned to Scripture. As Deuteronomy closes, Moses passes away, one of the giants of the faith now in heaven. Rather than leaving the people without a leader, Moses laid his hands on Joshua and as the book of Joshua opens, we read God’s instruction to Joshua, “Be strong and courageous, for you will distribute the land I swore to their fathers to give them as an inheritance.

Above all, be strong and very courageous to carefully observe the whole instruction My servant Moses commanded you.” (Joshua 1:6-7 HCSB) The Lord would then tell Joshua, “Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9 HCSB) We say good-bye to a leader in the faith, a giant who guided all of us in some way. What do we do now? We carry the same message – the gospel of Jesus Christ – with us each day, sharing the hope that is Jesus with those around us who are suffocating in this darkness. We do what the Lord commanded Joshua. We are strong and we are courageous, understanding the situation that we are in, the times that are the present, and the challenges that will come. Yes, Christ is the hope of each soul, the hope of the nation, but the world has embraced the darkness in such a way that they will not always receive the message of repentance with a smile on their faces. Repentance is necessary, the message that is needed today, but only those who are strong and courageous will stand steadfast in the face of the nature of this nation today.

What we saw in Billy Graham was something that should be seen in us by the rest of the world. His heart was set on the Great Commission and all of us have been called to do the same. We are to go into the lost world with the message of Christ, teaching others about the salvation that comes through Christ, and making disciples in all nations. The Lord will be with all of us just as His hand was upon Joshua. We say good-bye to a leader but continue on with the mission that God has placed before us.

March 2018 The Liberty Leader Newspaper Free Caregiver Skills Class for Family Caregivers Randolph County Senior Adults along with Randolph Health StayWell Senior Care will hold a free Caregiver Skills Class for family caregivers on Saturday, March 10th from 9:00-11:00am. The class will be held at StayWell Senior Care, 809 Curry Drive, Asheboro.

Caregivers have expressed a need to learn how to physically care for their loved one, especially as their needs change. This two-hour class will train family caregivers how to physically care for the older adult they care for. Some of the items that will be taught will be proper ways to transfer someone from a bed to a wheelchair, personal care, fall prevention, tips for feeding, how to properly use medical equipment, etc. A Physical Therapist and Occupational Therapist from Randolph Health will lead the class. Each participant will take home a free copy of The Caregiver’s Handbook, a practical, visual guide for the home caregiver. Refreshments will also be served. This class is made possible with funds from the North Carolina Family Caregiver Support Program and is available only for family caregivers, not professional caregivers. Inhome respite care is available by certified nursing assistants so caregiver can attend this class. Respite care will need to be applied for by February 26th. Local Rabies Clinics Local participating Randolph County Veterinarians and the Randolph County Health Department are sponsoring a special Quarterly Rabies Clinic. Rabies vaccinations will be available for your pets on Tuesday March 27, 2018. The clinic will be held during regular business hours at the offices of the participating veterinarians. The cost is only $10.00 per dog or cat.

The best way to protect your pet and family is to have your pet vaccinated. Puppies and kittens should receive their first rabies shot at 4 months, the second at 16 months, and then every three years thereafter.

Please bring your pet’s certificate of previous vaccinations so your veterinarian can update this record.

If you have any questions about the Rabies Clinic, please call the Randolph County Health Department at 336-318-6173. PASTOR’S PORCH Surprise! This month’s edition is brought to you by the Pastor’s bride, aka Tabitha… I hope it is a blessing to you! As I sit here on our lovely porch I prayed and asked God what He wanted me to talk about this month. I was reminded that Easter is coming and can’t help but to think of “The Passion of the Christ” movie. Of course I think of it’s plot which depicts the final moments of our Lord Jesus’ life, crucifixion, and resurrection according to the Gospels, but I also can’t help but to wonder why that movie title was chosen. What is passion? Passion is from Latin: passionem meaning, "suffering, enduring” but also “strong and barely controllable emotion.” God led me to Romans, the book of the Bible I just completed reading…His timing is always perfect.

The book of Romans reveals the answers to important questions and is full of info on many topics, such as salvation and spiritual growth. To me, this would be Christs’ passion!! This is why He died and suffered for us! He wants us ALL to receive salvation, grow spiritually, and live abundantly. I realized at this moment God was answering several of my other questions: Are you saved and if you are, where is your passion for the Lord? Why do some of my brothers and sisters in the Lord seem so downtrodden lately and how can I help?

It is important that we are challenged with such questions, so we can continually keep a check on our priorities. No one else can set our priorities for us. They will demonstrate where our passion is.

When we are passionate about someone, we want to spend all the time we can with him/her. We just love to be in their presence… It is no different with Jesus! Everyday I walk and talk with Him! I am in constant conversation with Him. I just want more and more of Him! If we are not passionate about our walk with Him, then we are going to struggle in hearing His voice and knowing His will for our lives. We must make better choices/decisions and stay close to the Lord so we will not be distracted and lose our PASSION FOR THE LORD! How do I get more PASSION? The answer: Eliminate the competition. Jesus said it is impossible to have two masters (Matthew 6:24). We are tempted to love the world (those things which please our eyes, make us feel good about ourselves, and gratify our fleshly desires) (1 John 2:15-17). We need to get rid of those things in our lives (others who would lead us the wrong way, things that take up our time & energy and keep us from serving God more fully, busyness, and the pursuit of popularity, possessions, etc). God promises that if we pursue Him, He will not only provide for our needs (Matthew 6:33) but will give us our desires as well (Psalm 37:4-5 my fav verse). I know this to be true in my own life!

I write this so you will be encouraged, to be led by God, and make those decisions and actions that will draw you nearer to Him, with a passion that enables you to be a true witness of Him wherever you go. Today is the day to begin pursuing an increase in passion. God is filled with so much passion for us that He deserves nothing less than whole-hearted passion from us!
