The Bruchon Family is sad to announce that we will not be serving free hot dogs at the Liberty Christmas Tree Lighting this year. It is with mixed emotions that we have prayerfully decided not to continue this annual tradition. For close to 20 years, the Bruchons have participated in this event by serving free hot dogs to those who came out to celebrate Christmas in Liberty.

In all, we gave away over 10,000 hot dogs. It has always been a blessing and truly our pleasure to give back to our community in this way. Our family has always enjoyed seeing the smiling faces of the children and the appreciation in the hearts of all those we served. It was an opportunity to wish friends and neighbors a “Merry Christmas.” It was dinner for some and a treat for others. It was our way of sharing a blessing because God had blessed us.As a family, serving hot dogs, to our community during the Christmas season helped us as much as it helped others. It provided valuable lessons to our kids, taught them to work hard and instilled in them a desire to give back. In the spirit of Christmas, it was truly a gift from the heart. Thank you for that blessing!

However, there is a time and a purpose for everything… now our kids are all grown up and have lives, careers and families of their own. Times have changed. Hopefully, future generations of the Bruchon family will carry on this tradition either here or where ever their lives may take them.

We want to thank God, our family and friends, The Town of Liberty, Dr. Blake, The Liberty Chamber of Commerce, and all those who came by for a free hot dog. We will miss you all!

Presents Do You KNOW the SCORE?

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that we MUST have in our bodies, for healthy cells and hormones, among other body processes. Our liver makes all that we need, but the foods we eat contribute to the total that is in our bodies. Foods we eat containing saturated or trans fats cause the liver to make even more cholesterol and that is where the problems start. Those circulate in the blood, and when it gets to be too much, it begins to build up on the walls or arteries that go to the heart and brain, causing heart attack or stroke. It can become a problem at any age, depending on diet and lifestyle and therefore screenings advised by your doctor can tell you the whole story When you get your lab work copy from your doctor, look at it carefully.

Today, we will talk about what the numbers mean about your cholesterol.

Cholesterol is an overused word, which is not understood, and most of us don’t want to think about it. Simply, notice those numbers and the ranges, usually to the far right of Your number. Notice where Your number ts, whether it is in the High or Low range, or somewhere in the middle. Hang with us on this. Get your own labs in front of you, and follow along!

First, your Dictionary: HDL stands for High Density Lipoprotein VLDL stands for Very Low Density Lipoprotein LDL stands for Low Density Lipoprotein Triglyceride is major form of fat stored by the body. Consists of 3 molecules of fatty acids, combined with a molecule of the alcohol glycerol, and serves as the backbone of fats Example of a Person’s Lab Work Cholesterol, Total 167 mg/dL 100-199 Triglycerides 95 mg/dL 0-149 HDL Cholesterol 68 mg/dL >39 VLDL Cholesterol 19 mg/dL 5-40 LDL Cholesterol Calc 80 mg/dL 0-99

Their Total Cholesterol is 167 which falls 32 points below the top. Great!

We have Triglycerides which is 95 and falls 54 points from the top. HDL at 68 is greater than 39, which is good. Then we look at VLDL at 19 which falls about mid-range here. Their LDL comes in at 80, which is closer toward the top at 99.

Combined Score HDL+ VLDL+ LDL= Total Cholesterol 68+19+80= 167 Triglycerides – described belo HDL is healthy cholesterol, the naturally occurring fats, that have not been processed (heated) or touched by people. VLDL 's are tiny particles of fats, that can cause some problems due to their tiny size.

LDL’s are the fats you do not want Look at it this way. HDL represents good guys, lassoing all those bad guys LDL! If you had one good guy to take out one bad guy, then your chance for Cardiac Disease or Events would be really low. So, bring up your good HDL fat, and lower your LDL bad guys. LDL builds up on those arteries.

HDL helps to protect those arteries by carrying those LDL back to the liver where it is broken down and passed out of the body. See, we told you those HDL will grab all those LDL and take them away for good, for the good of your body and your life Triglycerides are the most common fat in the body. They are the energy carrying cells. They are like balls of fatty sugar, carried in the blood from the foods we eat. A doughnut would be the perfect triglyceride cell, with fried oil and sugar combined! All the excess energy calories of the body are circulating in your blood as triglycerides. So, if you overeat anything, regardless of the food, have too much alcohol or sugar, the energy will be oating in the blood as triglycerides. A high triglyceride level increases the risk of heart attack and stroke by sticking happily to your artery walls. Triglycerides include all types of sweets, sugars and syrups.

The body even changes starches like potatoes, cereals, grains and pasta into triglycerides. No wonder that can be a high number in our lab work The only way to reduce our chances of Cardiac Disease and Risk is to watch our Lab Work and our diets to be sure to keep these things in check.

If you have family history or Cardiac Disease, you need to be REALLY watchful to keep yourself safe and healthy.

Here are a couple of tests that we have become aware of, for learning about your percent risk of a Cardiac Event. There may be others, but these are the ones we are sharing today. One is called the Calcium Score Screening Test. Your doctor can advise if this screening test is for you. It uses a CT Scan (puts radiation in the body, as much as a whole year of the sun, all at once) of your chest which shows the calcium buildup in your arteries. That buildup can be caused by that high cholesterol from your lab work which we surveyed above. If you are overweight, have family history or heart disease, are inactive or have high cholesterol over a long time…it may be a good screening to check in to. It is not an absolute, foolproof test of your percent risk of a cardiac event, because some of the ‘soft’ cholesterol cannot be seen. But it can give you a good look at what has begun to build and what you may be at risk of. For results, you will get a Calcium Score from between 0-400+. This number along with your gender and age will determine your percent risk of a Cardiac Event in the near future. That would be good to know and good to avoid! The knowledge that this test provides could save your life CAC Calcium Score Screening Test Zero= no plaque (low heart attack risk) 1-10 small amount of plaque ( less than 10% chance of heart disease, risk of heart attack is low) 11-100 some plaque (mild heart disease, with a moderate chance of a heart attack) 101-400 Heart disease is present (plaque may be blocking an artery, and the chance of a heart attack is moderate to high) 400+ Large amount of plaque (90% chance that plaque is blocking one or more arteries and the chance of heart attack is high) The last test we will look at concerning cholesterol and heart disease is a blood test. It is called NMR Lipopro le Blood Test, uses no radiation. It gives much the same information and is safer for you than the CT Scan which is used for the Calcium Score Screening Test above. It will tell you the percent probability of a cardiac event, just like the Calcium Score Screening test. What it tests is the particle sizes of all of the cholesterol components. It also tests Insulin Resistance and In ammatory markers.

It measures your body’s response to the damage in your artery walls and formations of plaque that are prone to rupture. It measures oxidized LDL, which is like rust on metal. Increased oxidized LDL levels predict the weight gain syndrome within the next years for people at four times the rate of non oxidized LDL. This simple blood test could give you the knowledge, like tests above, which could save your life.

So, if you are still reading, CONGRATULATIONS! You have educated yourself, you can share your information with others and you may even save a life, which could be your own.

Great News From Friends of Patterson Cottage

The Friends of the Patterson Cottage has purchased the Liberty Hardware building as the future site of the Liberty Heritage Museum.

The Friends and the Patterson Cottage Committee are in the process of renovating the building and will provide volunteers to staff the museum. Liberty Farm and Garden has purchased all stock and will be Liberty area's source for hardware. Your Liberty museum will house and display artifacts and items donated by Liberty area residents, friends and former residents. Some artifacts have been on display or stored at the Patterson Cottage. Other items, such as a doctor's buggy sold in Liberty around 1911, rare ri es, journals, photographs and a vintage cash register, to name a few, have been stored off site.

Purchase of the hardware building will enable many of these items to be displayed to the public and all artifacts to be safe and secure. The Friends would like to thank all the donors to this project which began in 2018.

New updates are coming to Paul Henry Smith Park including a new roof for the picnic shelter and the removal of several old trees.

The basketball court was recently pressure washed as well. The Liberty Public Library at the end of October received a grant from the American Library Association to host grant writing workshops for community members interested in improving Paul Henry Smith Park, as well as the purchase of a new water fountain and installation of a mural on the picnic shelter. Stay tuned!

Thank you to all of our community veterans and thank you for your willingness to serve.

Total Monthly Well Production for September was 6, 871,100 gallons of water. That is an average of 229,036 gallons produced per day.

The Town of Liberty was recently awarded a $150,000 Land and Water Conservation Fund grant for the renovation of Freedom Park. Renovations will include an amphitheater, a splash pad, new furnishings and expanded and improved parking and sidewalks.

Liberty Fire Department was proud to observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month with three pink fire hydrants in the downtown area. One at the intersection of Swannanoa and Greensboro, one at Depot St and Swannanoa and one at Fayetteville St and Swannanoa. Thanks to B-shift for getting the work done!

The Liberty Hardware store in downtown Liberty closed its doors in October and the building was purchased through the Friends of the Patterson Cottage on behalf of the Town of Liberty. Formerly operating as the Patterson Cottage Museum, Liberty’s local history museum will be moving into the hardware store and will be named the Liberty Heritage Museum.

The museum is expected to open in the Spring of 2022, but you can contact Warren Dixon if you are interested in contributing any support.

He has vast experience in the water and sewer field and worked in industrial maintenance before that. Welcome to Liberty Joe! In October, we took a day to appreciate our Interim Public Service director Terry Crouse.

Terry always helps where he is needed. He has served as our Safety Director, Interim Town Manager, and most recently Interim Public Services Director. He has stepped down as Public Services Director since the position has now been filled.

- Due to the confusion for children, there are to be NO other Santa Claus’ represented except for the one sponsored by The Staley Town Council.

- There will be zero tolerance for any form of horseplay associated with any parade entries. Unnecessary use of o -road vehicles of any kind on public streets is strictly prohibited. All entries are expected to line up promptly and turn engines o un l me for the parade to begin.

- NO HORSES will be allowed in the parade.

There will also be a contest for best oat (a decorated entry that is pulled behind another vehicle). I was thrilled to see how many responses I got to my nostalgic post about our sweet Liberty. I have so many memories and I hope the owner of this page doesn’t matter but I thought I would bring you some stories of my youth. Maybe it will remind you of yours.

I always tell people I grew up dirt poor. But I wouldn’t change it for nothing now that I’m older and truly appreciate everything. I stayed with my PawPaw and MawMaw a lot. They was both retired by the time I came along but my rst memories that I can ever remember is being about 3 or 4 and them taking me over to Mr. Brown’s store on 49 to get my pictures done. I can remember going to yard sales, where most of my clothes came from, riding in the back of Pawpaws big ole station wagon. Every Saturday morning we would head out, with the Liberty News and Chatham News in Mawmaws hands looking for the good ones. They would buy stuff to resale at auctions around the area. Ralph Reeders over on 64 just about where the Shell station and trailer park are now was a good one. I would carry the stuff around and give it to the people who bid and won it. And then there was one over near Kimesville that we went to and I loved looking at the lights over the Kimesville Lake at Christmas time. And then we started going to the one out past Coleridge on 22 headed towards Bennett. I learned how to know the difference between old and new depression glass, which pottery was the good kind… I still love McCoy and Roseville.. and I saved money to buy a grab bag cause you never knew what you would get. Later on, I worked the concession stand and my MawMaw said I never met a stranger. I think that has helped me with my people skills to this day.

At Mawmaws, they didn’t have running water. We had an old wood stove that would keep the living room warm but when it came to bedtime, she would put me in a annel gown and tuck me in between her and PawPaw in their bed and if I close my eyes I can still feel how good it felt. In the summer, it was hot as re and they didn’t have an air conditioner, just an old box fan that she would place in front of the unlocked screen door that went outside in their bedroom. I would sleep down in between their feet then with just a cool cotton sheet on me. MawMaw would get up every morning and cook breakfast… red eye gravy, her homemade wagon wheel biscuits, grits and I loved it when she cooked fatback. She would get up early to go and work out in the garden. She carried water from the big ole tin tubs that sat out at the back door that caught rain water and use it to water the plants or the owers that she loved or even to wash the clothes on the old washing machine that she had to wring out and hang the clothes out on the line. We didn’t have a dishwasher, and I can remember her standing me on a chair so I could wash the dishes with water she heated on the stove. She had a slop bucket that he would put old leftover food in and would throw it out about once a week. She loved old hymns like Rock of Ages and the Old Rugged Cross. She listened to the Siler City station WNCA every Saturday and Sunday morning. We all would be quiet when it was time for the obituaries to come on because she wanted to know who had died. She had one phone that hung on the wall and I still remember picking up the phone and hearing different people talk and then later on, I would call friends I had made or make prank calls.. and then lay down the phone off the hook when I thought they had found out who I was and might call and tell on me. One of Mawmaw’s favorite things to do was to can. Can tomatoes, sourkraut, green beans… I have yet to taste any that could come close in the last 30 years. If you’ve never canned, let me tell you it is a chore of love. So much water needed and that ole pressure cooker was big and if you ever dropped it, you would scald yourself to death. And shelling peas… my ngers would get so sore. Shucking corn for her to freeze.. do y’all remember those old metal ice trays that would tear your ngers ups if you let your hand slide! We didn’t drink a lot of dranks back then.. Kool Aid was so much better back then. And cold water from Uncle Charlie’s or Alice Vickrey’s well water!!!! I learned to love buttermilk and cornbread. And potted meat sandwiches! And there was only one mayonnaise.. JFG. MawMaw used to make quilts.. she would sew them together by hand. I can remember she would sign her Initials in the bottom corner with thread and needle of everyone. What I wouldn’t give to have one of those now!?!?! She would sell them anywhere from 25 to 50$ depending on how big people wanted them.

MawMaw never learned to drive… PawPaw drove us everywhere until I got my license. But if you went anywhere, you might as well plan on being gone awhile cause the man never went faster than 45 mph. He said a car wasn’t made to y. She went to the 5th grade and PawPaw never went to school.

He would sign his check with an X. They wanted me to go to college. They both always said they wanted me to have what they never did. I hope they are proud of me and my brother.

MawMaw would say the prayer with me every night.. Now I lay me down to sleep.. and she cried when I learned it all by myself. PawPaw loved to watch wrestling and if the one he didn’t like wasn’t winning, people a mile around us would hear him cussing the tv. He was always the last one to eat..

MawMaw said it was because he loved us more than he loved himself. He would always bring me a bag of sour cream and onion potato chips and a Brownie chocolate milk if he went anywhere without us. And back then we all watched the good shows on our one tv.. you know, the one that had aluminum foil on the rabbit ears to get good reception. The Waltons, Grizzly Adams, TJ Hooker, Little House on the Prairie, Bonanza, and every Saturday morning it was the good cartoons! Not that crap they have today.

They didn’t believe in animals being in the house but I would sneak a cat in the house to sleep with me when I got a little older and would sleep in the living room to watch tv after they had gone to bed. They would make me a pallet on the oor and let us stay up late. Lord, I have so many memories.

It’s getting late and I hope you enjoyed this. I hope Kevin Bowman doesn’t hate me for taking up space on this page. Y’all have a good night

Hometown Hero

Local Modern Woodmen members honor hometown hero Krista Layton of Liberty. She was honored on Monday, October 11, 2021, for countless hours of service to the community.

Layton was noted for planning a fundraiser benefitting a breast cancer patient in Liberty through Modern Woodmen of America’s “Hometown Heroes Program.” In recognition of her efforts, members of Modern Woodmen’s Liberty Chapter presented Krista with a certificate and awarded a $100 grant to Wesley Long Cancer Center, the charitable organization of her choice.

Coordinated by local Modern Woodmen members, chapters provide opportunities to connect through social activities and volunteer projects.
