What a wonderful day for a parade! Floats, Marching Bands, fancy cars, tractors, motorcycles, hot rods, tricked out trucks, tiny dancers, funny characters, and of course Santa & Mrs. Claus. The streets of Liberty were full of an assortment of vehicles and parade participants. Young and old came out to enjoy the festivities.

We want to thank New Day Ministries taking part in our festival. We want to encourage future participation from all local churches. We want to keep Christ in Christmas!

Immediately after the parade the festivities continued as we rocked around the Christmas tree. Sapphire Studios danced to a jingling beat, while Old Skool, the Smith Family Band and Will Way provided a variety of Christmas favorites.New this year the Chamber organized a “Holiday Market” where local crafters and vendors had an opportunity to sell their holiday gift items. Approximately, twenty vendors participated and added to the festive atmosphere. The Chamber wants to encourage everyone to Shop local during this holiday season. The Annual Lighting of the Liberty Christmas Tree went beautifully! The Tree lights will remain on during the evening hours until midnight each night through the Christmas season. The highlight of the festival was seeing the excitement in the eyes of the children who won one of four bicycles that were raffled off.

Christmas Is About Giving

The windshield wipers slopped back and forth, swish, clump, swish, clump. The old man wondered why he had failed to change them when he had the chance. Why, he thought, did the one on the driver’s side always wear out first. Part of it had peeled almost all the way off, flopping to and fro in the rain. His wife sat huddled beside him, wrapped in a woolen brown coat.

Some of the buttons were gone on the coat but, in the dark, the moth holes didn’t show. She wondered why the old man had purchased a car without a heater but knew the answer almost before the thought entered her mind. Money, it was always about money. That was the reason the windshield wipers were worn out, causing her husband to lean forward to see through the rain as he drove home that night. The grandson in the back seat watched out the fogged back window into the darkness, out across the rain-soaked fields, wondering if Santa Claus would bring anything this year. Soon the boy saw the Pittsboro city limits sign and felt the bump of the railroad tracks. In the glare of the headlights he could make out the form of a soldier standing beside the road, duffle bag by his side, his right arm extended in the rain. The old man pulled the ’39 Ford over. He had never failed to pick up a hitchhiking soldier. He cut off the car and hobbled out into the rain. “Put your bag in here,” he said, opening the trunk. He noticed that the soldier was wearing a round parachute patch on his cap. “Thank you, thank you,” the soldier said as he crawled into the back seat beside the boy. “I thought I was going to have to spend the night here.” “It’s a bad night to be out,” the woman said looking back at the soldier. “Where you going?” “Tick Creek,” he replied. The old man winced. “But any night’s a good night, ma’am. I’m just thankful to be going home this Christmas. Where I’ve been makes you appreciate…well, it’s just good to be alive.”

“Where have you been?” the boy asked. “A place called Bastogne,” said the soldier. “That’s where I spent last Christmas. You see life differently when you’ve been to a place like that.” “John was in the first war,” said the old woman. “Then he knows,” said the soldier. The four drove on down Highway 64 in silence for awhile, only the sound of the windshield wipers breaking the quiet.

Finally, the soldier spoke up. “What’s Santa Claus bringing you?” he asked the boy. “Fruits and nuts and candies?” A shotgun? Do you hunt?” “Maybe some new overalls,” replied the boy, staring at the floorboard. “Santa Claus don’t bring us much,” said the old man. “Time’s is hard.” “I got my folks some Christmas presents,” said the soldier. “I wanted to get my girl a ring. We’re getting married as soon as I get home. But I couldn’t afford a ring so I got her a silk scarf in France. But I don’t reckon a ring makes a marriage,” he added sheepishly. The woman twisted the wide, gold wedding band on her finger. It didn’t fit quite as well as it used to. “I bet they don’t care what you got them,” said the woman. “You’re enough present for them.” The soldier smiled. The old man pulled the car into a Gulf service station. “Need some gas,” he said, secretly hoping the soldier would offer to pay.

Instead, the soldier got out of the car and went inside. “I can walk home from here,” he said when he returned. “I just live down Rives Chapel Road.” “I’ll take you home,” said the old man. “I wouldn’t put you out in the rain.” He turned the car off 64 onto a narrow, muddy road. The Ford rocked and bumped and sloshed water high into the air and over the windshield. Soon the headlights landed on a mailbox in the distance. “That’s my driveway,” the soldier said excitedly.

“That’s where I live.” The old man slowed the car. “You’ll have to let me out here,” said the soldier.

‘You can’t drive a car down there. It’s just an old wagon path.” He opened the door and rain blew into the car. “Give me the keys,” he told the old man. “No use for you to get wet again.” The man handed him the keys. The soldier stepped out into the dark and the car lifted slightly when he opened the trunk. After awhile, he returned, his duffle bag on his shoulder. “Thank you again,” he said, shaking the old man’s hand, then the boy’s. “God bless you.” Then he braced himself against the storm and started down the path. “Wait,” the old woman said, opening her door. She stepped out into the mud and gave the soldier a hug. He thought he felt her hand go into his pocket. What kind of people are these, he thought. Is she trying to pick my pocket? As he rounded the curve past the cedar trees he reached into his coat pocket and felt something round. Pulling it out he realized it was a wide, gold wedding band. The old man turned the car in the road and headed back toward Highway 64, then soon pulled to a stop. “That soldier spent a lot of time in the trunk,” he grumbled to his wife. “I hope he didn’t steal my jack.” He got out of the car and opened the trunk.

There beside the spare tire was a German shotgun lying on top of a long, blue woman’s wool coat and a French silk scarf. Beside them was a brand new pair of windshield wipers.

Which Journey AreBy:You On? Andy Clapp As the holiday season has arrived, we set out on various journeys during the season. There is the rush on Thanksgiving to see friends and family for a day of recollection and giving thanks. From there, the list of comings and goings expands, some extending beyond the 25th of December. We travel to see. We journey to be a part of something special. We are in constant motion during the season, trying to capture something larger than we are and to make the memories that will last. The Wise Men had patiently watched the sky for the star to appear. A darkened sky was illuminated by a star so magnificent that they knew the day had come.

This journey would be over six hundred miles. The dangers of the journey were plentiful as they would have to navigate rugged terrain and dangerous areas, notorious for thieves and nefarious types. Such an undertaking would be strenuous on the Wise Men physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. The threat of death was real. The likelihood far greater than if they remained at home. So why did they go? The desire to see the Son of God was too great within them. Sitting at home meant a void would still exist in their lives. They could find Him, if they were willing to lay aside their lives and follow where God was leading them. As they questioned to His whereabouts, they asked, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.” (Matthew 2:2 HCSB) A star was their guide. Seeing Jesus would be the gift. Worshipping Him would be their reaction. The Bible promises that the journey to find the Lord will never end up empty. Rather than being a random pursuit, such a journey has a promised result.

Scripture declares, “Keep asking, and it will be given to you. Keep searching, and you will find. Keep knocking, and the door will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7 HCSB) In Jeremiah, we read again, “You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13 HCSB) What journey are you on in life? Have you found what you are looking or does everything seem to create more emptiness? For the Wise Men, they found themselves at the house of Mary and Joseph, in the very presence of Jesus. The angels would guide them home a difference route, this journey becoming an expedition of a lifetime as God’s hand was evident from its inception to its conclusion. Such a journey awaits us in this Christmas season and beyond. The wisest of humanity set out to see a Savior and Scripture says that the result is being in the presence of the Lord at the end of such an endeavor. Merry Christmas! Christ has come! Now is the time to begin our quest to see Him.

Hospice of Randolph County to host Holiday Tour of Homes!

Hospice of Randolph County is pleased to announce the date for their 2017 holiday event as they continue to host the “ R a n d o l p h County Holiday Tour of Homes”.

The date for the tour has been set for S u n d a y, December 10, from 1pm to 5pm. This event is a fundraiser for Hospice of Randolph County and offers the opportunity to showcase different styles of Randolph County homes during the holiday season including historic, traditional, contemporary & specialty design. The 2017 Tour of Homes Committee members are Bonita Campbell, Pat Andrews, Linda Covington, Debbie Dennis, Ann Hoover, Judi Brinegar, Tyler Wilhoit, Lisa Huffman and David Caughron. The scheduled showcase of Randolph County homes include the downtown Asheboro loft of Ernest & Charlotte Berliner at Dish’n Pottery & Art Studio and the homes of Kevin & Alyssa Way, Micky & Pat Whitehead and Pamela Hughes, all located in Asheboro. Then you have the historic Freeze Estate in Randleman, once home to the founders of Commonwealth Hosiery Mill, now owned by Bruce Hughes and presented

by Rodney & Betsy Moody as a special event venue. Local participating Randolph County Veterinarians and the Randolph County Health Department are sponsoring a special Quarterly Rabies Clinic. Rabies vaccinations will be available for your pets on Tuesday, December 12, 2017. The clinic will be held during regular business hours at the offices of the participating veterinarians. The cost is only $10.00 per dog or cat. The best way to protect your pet and family is to have your pet vaccinated. Puppies and kittens should receive their first rabies shot at 4 months, the second at 16 months, and then every three years thereafter.

Please bring your pet’s certificate of previous vaccinations so your veterinarian can update this record. A grand marshal is an honorary title given to an individual or group by the organizing committee of a periodic parade event. Today my family will be the grand marshal of the Liberty Christmas Parade in honor of Terry W. Smith, my stepdad who was KILLED horrifically in a tragic accident. I must say what an honor this is...as most of you know...Terry was an amazing, selfless, hardworking, caring, funny, and die hard Tarheel person! Most of you do not even know that he was my stepdad because he took the place so well of my own dead-beat junkie father. I am not having a pity party...I have made peace with God about these things but I say all that to say this as we go into the Christmas season: Spend time with your loved ones...my fondest memories involve just sitting around the stove , in the garden, or in the tobacco barn eating, laughing, and talking about God and life....pay attention on the road (get off your phones!) not only are you taking a chance at losing your life...but somebody else's too!!!! Think about what you are doing and how it can effect someone else's life... stop being selfish! Addicts you are missing out on your children's lives!!!! Children need their Mommy's and Daddy's...that is how God intended family to be!

They can not only miss out on you being there but it can cause them to have so many other psychological and social problems later in life...it can even mess up their own marriages, friendships and relationships down the line! Most of all: GOD IS OUR FATHER! He loves us more than anyone...if you begin a relationship with HIM you will thirst no more!!! You can never feel lonely...because you are never alone!

He is always there and His LOVE can quench any need, feeling, or satisfaction you will ever search for or find.

Give your life and heart to Jesus this Christmas...no turning back! Happy December and Merry Christmas! Selah!

The Rose Garden Club

Keep your eyes on the five “Welcome to Liberty “signs. The ladies of the Rose Garden Club have been busy cleaning up and preparing the planters around the base of the signs for new soil, plants and mulch.

Each sign planter will have different native plants, wildflowers, pollinator plants plus evergreens for year-round color. This will be an ongoing maintenance project for the Club.

Our goal is to have the planters finished in time to greet visitors coming in for the Antiques Festival. In addition to the new plantings the Club will have five new signs installed at the base of the large Liberty sign with the Garden Club logo and year established. The new signage in a smaller version will be installed at each of the projects around town that are taken care of by the club. As members of the National Garden Clubs and The Garden Club of North Carolina we will be applying for the -Roadside Award offered by the National Garden Club. This award has a monetary value for the Club that would help enable us to sustain our project. We would especially like to thank t h e R a n d o l p h C o u n t y To u r i s m Development Authority- for approving our Grant applications to make funds available for this landscaping project and the new signage.

Gilmore Plant and Bulb will be providing the plant material and has given recommendations as to what to plant in our planters. New members are always welcome, our meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month September through May at 6:30 pm. Each meeting is held at a different location with programs and guest speakers. Lions Club Makes Impacts

Over the past several years, six Grays Chapel Lions Club Members have built handicapped ramps for needy people in our community and surrounding towns. They have built ramps in Liberty, Staley, Ramseur, Grays Chapel, Asheboro and Greensboro. Lion Dove Coble taught carpentry for twenty five years at Eastern Randolph High School in Ramseur. With his ability in building, he has led the group of other inexperienced workers. The Lions involved are Glen Coley, Terry Brown, Charlie Baker, Dove Coble, Gary Davis and Bill Heileg. During the month of October, the group has built two ramps, one for an eleven year old boy with a degenerative muscle diseases.

The other ramp was for a man with limited mobility. In total, the group has built thirty four ramps in total. Below are pictures of the last two ramps built in October. If you see a Lions Club member tell them you appreciate their work. Even better if you would like to become a member of the group even better. Online Certified Medical Coder Classes Begin Jan. 8

ASHEBORO According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for certified medical coders will increase 22 percent through the year 2022. Training for this lucrative career as a professional medical coder is available at Randolph Community College through the Workforce Development and Continuing Education Division.

In two online classes, the first beginning Jan. 8, students will learn medical terminology and anatomy as well as how to use the CPT manual and the ICD-10-CM to work as a coder in the healthcare field (doctors’ offices, clinics, public health facilities, hospitals, etc.).

These classes help prepare students for the American Academy of Professional Coders CPC (Certified Professional Coder) National exam. The CPC is the gold standard for medical coding in physician office settings.

The first course (section #64167), “Medical Terminology & Anatomy,” will begin Jan. 8 and run through March 30. A high school diploma or equivalency diploma is required. The cost is $180, plus approximately $60 for a textbook.

The second course (section #64201), “Medical Coding,” will begin April 9 and run through June 29. The cost is $180, plus approximately $400 for textbooks. The prerequisites for this course include a high school diploma or equivalency and successful completion of the first course, Medical Terminology & Anatomy.

"The Pastor's Porch"

with Pastor Don Hey guys, Pastor Don here, sitting on the front porch looking at the Christmas lights and thinking about the reason for the season, Jesus! Today I have some company on the porch, my lovely wife Tabitha. As we sit here looking at the lights, thinking about the birth of our Savior Jesus, we are also conversating with one another and our God above about the good and bad of this season. My wife and I both can identify with this very well.

In our lives we have experienced both good and bad Christmas seasons, depending on what was going on in our lives at the time. This Christmas being a mixture of both, as our personal lives are extremely blessed, this Christmas will be the first Christmas without my father in law, my wife's step daddy, Terry Smith. Someone we loved dearly that was lost in a tragic accident this last year.

As we talk about this we realize that even though we are celebrating a wonderful thing, which is the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ into this world, our personal lives can be in a very broken place, and while others may be experiencing alot of joy and happiness in this season with gifts, families, and festivities we can be feeling exactly the opposite.

Some of us can be feeling very alone and lost. We can be feeling sad and hopeless. We can be feeling like this life has dealt us a losing hand and that the blessings and favor that others are experiencing are not in the cards for us.

But as we talk about this, we both smile at one another cause we know that this is not true. Cause no matter what is going on in our lives, every one of us has something to grab hold of this Christmas season. That IS the birth and celebration of the greatest gift giver ever given, Jesus Christ! No matter the circumstances or situations of your life at this moment, the birth and eventual death of Jesus Christ allows us to look forward to the greatest thing we can possess: Eternal life with God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit and all our loved ones that accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, in a place better than DisneyLand!

Revelation 21:4 says "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death, no more sorrow, no more crying, no more pain. All these things are gone forever." The promises of God through His son Jesus Christ can get us through any season! In this season of celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, no matter what is going on, hold onto this truth, and the Love of God! Merry Christmas,
