Throughout the years, the original owners decided to retire or move on with another career, and with that the ownership has changed. RCC ceremonies pave the way for law enforcement, healthcare professionals to join the workforce ASHEBORO (Jan. 4, 2024) — Seventy-seven individuals participated in three December ceremonies at Randolph Community College.

“These ceremonies mark a significant milestone in students’ lives, symbolizing the culmination of weeks of hard work, dedication, and academic achievement,” expressed RCC President/CEO Dr. Shah Ardalan.

On Friday, Dec. 8, the CNA Pinning Ceremony took place, featuring a cohort of 27 students who crossed the stage. Among them, Kathleen Martin was one of the four students given the opportunity to speak during the ceremony.

“I was so nervous going into the first day of class. I was so thankful for this class, for everybody that I got to know, and the confidence I gained,” said Martin, who added that she never wanted to be a nurse, but her dad encouraged her to take the career path.

On Monday, Dec. 11, RCC’s 95th Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) class walked across the stage, each having already been hired by a local agency. Class Leader Abigail Carter, who has been hired by the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, said that, while the grueling 18 weeks of training made the class members question whether they were in the right field, it prepared them for the road ahead.

“We’ve become like a family, and I would trust them with my life, which is truly vital in this line of work,” she said. “Having a support system is especially important in law enforcement.”

A record 39 students earned their Adult High School or High School Equivalency diplomas in the CCR Graduation Ceremony on Dec. 14, including Paola Bumbaca.

Originally from Columbia, Bumbaca came to the United States in 2009. She started her RCC journey by enrolling in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes and then earned her diploma. Throughout every step, she said she was encouraged by RCC faculty and staff, even saying that one of the instructors was “like a father.”

“These ceremonies are a transformative moment that often serves as a catalyst for profound personal and professional growth,” Ardalan said. “The bonds formed during the educational journey become lasting connections that continue to shape and enrich students’ lives. RCC takes pride in being part of this journey. We are also thrilled to extend an invitation to the graduates of the three programs to join our May 8 graduation ceremony in Greensboro. These students are stepping into a future full of possibilities.”

Alysha and Mrs. Hylton were recognized at last night's Board of Education meeting on behalf of the Patriot community: Providence Grove High School would like to recognize Alysha Brown as our STAR3 student. Alysha is a senior at Providence Grove and excels as a student athlete and an integral member of the student body. Alysha is an A honor roll student, taking all honors level and RCC courses. She is a member of BETA club, and serves as the class treasurer in the Student Government Association. Alysha runs track and is captain of the basketball team. In her spare time, Alysha enjoys shopping and spending time with family and friends. After graduation, Alysha plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill or Winston Salem State University to study accounting in sports management. Patriot Nation could not be more proud to call Alysha our STAR3 student of the month!

Mrs. Hylton is the lead teacher at Providence Grove, but reaches far beyond her role to meet the needs of the PG community. She works diligently to ensure our staff have all of the instructional resources and support that they need to provide equitable educational opportunities for each student. In addition to taking on the role of lead teacher, she also serves as the testing coordinator.

Mrs. Hylton is the liaison between the school and the PTSO, establishing and maintaining effective communication and collaboration between the school and the external stakeholders. Mrs. Hylton is an essential member of the Providence Grove community, excelling in every role that she takes on to serve our staff and students.

Franklinville Elementary School – Christian “Junior” Sosa Ortiz Franklinville Elementary is proud to announce Junior Sosa Ortiz as our Star3 Student for January. Liberty Elementary School – Hector Dominguez Hector is a great role model to all. He always does the right thing, he is hard-working, dependable, a leader, a great participant, and a friend to everyone. He is humorous, has a great personality, and excels in and out of the classroom balancing extracurricular activities and school. He is also described as being confident, kind, and trustworthy, and someone other students can go to for help when they need it. We are proud to honor Hector with this well-deserved award!

Northeastern Randolph Middle School – Kendal Mundy Northeastern Randolph Middle School is proud to nominate Kendal Mundy as our STAR3 student.

Both as a student-athlete and in the classroom, Kendal strives for excellence in all she does. She demonstrates determination, responsibility, and hard work. Academically, Kendal is an active member of Beta Club. She took a leading role in apparel design and will represent NERMS as a 7th grader at the Beta Club Convention in January. In the classroom, Kendal always strives to do her best both as an individual and when collaborating with a group. She is organized, attentive, and dedicated to putting forth her best effort in all she does. She also holds a leadership role as a media assistant and performs her role effectively and efficiently. Always willing to lend a helping hand, she can perform tasks without direction and seeks ways that she can help others. What makes Kendal such a standout student is her kindness, positivity, and consideration for her fellow peers and teachers. Kendal is always willing to assist others and her enthusiasm and smile make our school a better place.

According to his 5th-grade teachers, Aydn always tries his best to find any opportunity to be helpful to those around him. He is kind and a good friend to others in his classroom and across the grade level. He is respectful to his teachers and has a great work ethic! This includes putting forth effort into everything he does. He participates in classroom discussions, asks questions, and completes his assignments.

Adyn has demonstrated a desire to learn and grow in all subject areas and we are proud of his success as a student. He truly embodies what it is to be a RAM!

Franklinville Elementary School – Trinity Harrison Franklinville is proud to recognize Trinity Harrison as our STAR Employee for January. As a firstyear teacher, Ms. Harrison goes above and beyond to make sure that she is meeting the needs of all students. She is working incredibly hard to learn the curriculum and implement various classroom management strategies. Ms. Harrison shows up every day with a positive attitude and always spreads joy wherever she goes. When she is faced with adversity, she is always willing to reflect and implement something different to make sure that her classroom succeeds. Her dedication to education, building relationships, and meeting the basic needs of all students is admirable. It is evident that she strives to build an inclusive classroom environment where all students feel valued and loved. Ms. Harrison is a true example of what all educators should strive to be and Franklinville Elementary is very thankful and honored to have her as part of the Cardinal family.

Grays Chapel Elementary School – Jennifer Macfayden Jennifer Macfayden is a kindergarten teacher at Grays Chapel who is a leader in her classroom, in her grade level, and in the school. She goes above and beyond by leading and teaching with passion.

She is exceptional in the classroom and builds amazing relationships with students and staff members. Her students know how much she cares for them and believes in them and all they can accomplish. Her love of learning is evident and contagious to all around her. Mrs. Macfayden's friendly smile radiates to others. She truly embodies the characteristics of a STAR Employee. Liberty Elementary School – Emily Fields Ms. Fields shows up each day with such a great attitude and makes every day so fun! She makes a difference for each child in her classroom and is a great colleague to have at Liberty. She never lets anything ruin her mood, and always pushes through and makes the day great for everyone! Ms. Fields goes above and beyond for her students and excels in her teaching. She is always willing to put in the extra work including committees, LETRS training, and helping fellow teachers when in need. She always has a positive “can do” attitude and is upbeat any time you see her. She is always willing to help out a colleague and is willing to fill in or take a position if asked. She serves on the SIT team and works to better the school from a leadership standpoint. She always has a desire to learn, grow, and serve the school in any way she can. We are very excited to honor Ms. Fields for this award!!

Northeastern Randolph Middle School – Amy Johnson Mrs. Amy Johnson joined the Northeastern Randolph Middle School staff just this year and has quickly proven herself to be a valuable member of the office staff and the school. Mrs. Johnson has quickly learned all of her responsibilities as the General Office Assistant and is someone we all know we can rely upon. She is always willing to jump in and help and looks for things to do when there's any free time (cleaning, helping others). Mrs. Johnson is always friendly to staff, students, and visitors. She is a great representative of Northeastern to our community as she is often the first person anyone meets when they visit Northeastern. Our insurance rate system: It’s different, but it works for NC

By Mike Causey Insurance Commissioner There’s been a lot of talk lately about North Carolina’s insurance rates and how they’re set, especially since the insurance companies have asked for an average 42.2% increase in homeowners’ insurance rates. North Carolina is unique in how it sets insurance rates for the most common types of consumer insurance, including homeowners’ and automobile insurance policies. The General Assembly, decades ago, chose not to have individual companies file with the Department of Insurance their own rates for these common types of insurance.

Instead, lawmakers opted to set up the N.C. Rate Bureau, which is not a part of the Department of Insurance, to represent the interests of all insurance companies writing such common types of policies in the state, with the Rate Bureau collectively filing proposed rates based on information from its members . The Rate Bureau’s filings are then subject to the Commissioner’s review. Some have advocated for change in the Rate Bureau system, suggesting that making such a change could result in lower insurance premiums for North Carolinians. For example, a majority of states permit homeowners and automobile insurers to file new rates with the insurance regulators and then begin charging those new rates immediately, without the regulators’ prior approval.

I’m always looking for ways to make things better, to help North Carolina consumers get value for their insurance premium dollar. I just want to make sure any modifications to the way insurance rates are set accomplishes at least these two things: 1. Provides a fair premium for North Carolina consumers.

2. Provides a robust insurance market so North Carolinians can have choices of insurance products.

I believe that our current Rate Bureau system achieves these goals and provides better protection for consumers than those states where insurers can simply file and use their new rates without prior approval. As set out in our state law, once the Department of Insurance receives the filing from the Rate Bureau, the process of reviewing the request and making an eventual decision on the filing begins.

The Department sends out a news release statewide announcing the Rate Bureau’s filing and informing residents of how they can comment on the proposal. This allows consumers to email comments or send them through the Postal Service. In the case of homeowners’ rate requests, there is also an in-person public hearing which, in recent years, has included a Webex option for consumers to participate virtually.

Within 50 days of the filing, the Commissioner must decide to either allow Rate Bureau’s proposed increases to take effect, or to reject them and set a hearing date on proposed rates. Thus far, I have rejected the Rate Bureau’s homeowners’ insurance rate increase filing every time.

In the meantime, my team of actuaries, lawyers, accountants and other insurance experts pore over thousands of pages of data provided by the Rate Bureau to see what increases may be justified and what increases are not justified.

Once we get a clear understanding of the data, we can then enter negotiations with the Rate Bureau and work to settle on a rate that is significantly lower than the proposed increase. However, if no negotiation is possible, I will proceed with the scheduled hearing, where the Department’s experts and attorneys argue before a hearing officer for rates lower than those the Rate Bureau has requested.

While I like to avoid protracted legal proceedings if I can, I won’t hesitate to hold a hearing if that’s necessary to make sure consumers get a fair price.

Long Term Road Closure for Guilford County Bridge Replacement HIGH POINT– An N.C. Department of Transportation contractor will close a road in Guilford County for about three months for a bridge replacement project.

Beginning at 9 a.m. on Jan. 16, Deep River Road will be closed near Hickswood Road to allow crews to construct a new bridge that carries traffic over Deep River. Work is expected to be complete by the end of July.

During the closure a signed detour will Guide Deep River traffic to Eastchester Drive to Wendover Avenue to Penny Road to Main Street to Jamestown Parkway back onto Deep River Road. Hickswood Road will utilize Williard Drive to detour around the closure.

Motorists are advised to use extra caution and plan accordingly for delays due to the detour.
