Documentary Team Comes to Liberty to Produce Film on A.E. Staley And just who is A.E. Staley, you ask?

Spencer Films of Decatur, Illinois, is going to answer that question with an upcoming documentary entitled “Fields of Gold”. Julie Staley, CEO of the company, heads up the four person team that was recently in Liberty. Julie is married to Mark Staley, a great grandson of the subject of the film, A.E. Staley. And they were in Liberty to film portions of their documentary about one of the most important men to ever come out of this part of Randolph County. A man few people in the county know about. The folks at Liberty’s Patterson Cottage Museum know about Augustus Eugene Staley and love to tell his story to anyone who will listen.

Gene Staley, as he was known locally, was born February 25, 1867, on a 265 acre farm on what is now Old Red Cross Road near Julian. Life was hard on the farm after the Civil War and Staley yearned for more from life than a career in tobacco farming. As a matter of fact, he hated farming. Early in his life in 1880, a missionary from China brought soybeans seeds to a camp meeting at Shiloh Methodist Church. Staley took some home with him and planted them. Although he didn’t realize it at the time, soybeans would later play a huge part in Staley’s life. He later related that he walked three miles to a four month school, probably near Shiloh, but never progressed past the third grade, never learned fractions or studied grammar. His father, William Staley, died in 1885, when Gene Staley was just eighteen. It fell to him to look after his family and, hating farming, he hit the road as a traveling salesman. Earlier, he had been fired from a job at Odell Hardware in Greensboro when he was 16. The owner told him to go back to farming, that he’d never make a businessman. But Staley seems to have been a natural salesman. He told fruit trees and later a line of products to grocery stores all over several states. That led him to Baltimore, where he began buying starch, used to thicken puddings, sauces and gravies, in bulk, repackaging it and peddling it to local grocers. He’d pawn his pocket watch at the first of the week for spending cash, then retrieve it at the end of the week after he’d made some sales. The large starch companies found out what Gene Staley was doing, and began under pricing his starch, eventually putting him out of business.

But Augustus Eugene Staley, as he once said, was a big man with big ideas. He didn’t do things in a small way. He weighed 278, by the way. So he kept working in the starch business, marrying a lady in Baltimore and making his way to Decatur, Illinois in 1909, where he found a vacant plant in the city for a good price. He borrowed money, purchased it and some 17-year-old equipment and began processing corn, manufacturing Cream Corn Starch and Staley Syrup. But by 1914, he was $250,000 in debt and the plant had to shut down. Staley didn’t give up, but reorganized his company, sold stock and got the plant working again. By 1924, Staley Manufacturing Company was employing 1100 workers and had a value of $11,000,000. In 2020 dollars, this is $165,000,000. Staley was an innovator in the industry, creating an employee cafeteria in the plant at a time when this was unheard of, publishing a company newsletter and hiring what he called “a welfare man” to help his employees manage their money better. His also became the first company in America to process soybeans, a plant he never forgot from his days at Shiloh camp meetings. In 1919, after a trip home, he brought a pocket full of North Carolina

soybeans to his plant in Decatur and showed them to his vice-president. By 1927, the A.E. Staley Company was not only the first company to process the beans, it accounted for 39% of domestic soybean oil and meal. By 1941, the company had sales of $28 million and a net profit of $1.4 million. As if the story of Staley’s rise from a Randolph County tobacco farm to a captain of industry is not fascinating enough, there’s more. Staley loved sports, although he’d never played. He had a company baseball team, basketball team and bowling team. By 1919, he wanted a company football team. According to one of his friends in Decatur, Tom Samuels, “He dreamed big—and then he set about to make his dreams come true. Staley wasn’t the kind of person who could think big in corn and think small in sports. He was all-or-nothingat-all, all the way.”

Staley needed a coach for his football team so he hired George Halas, recently discharged from the Navy, who had been working as a bridge engineer. Halas wasn’t just your ordinary bridge engineer, however. While playing football on the Navy Great Lakes team, Halas had been awarded the Most Valuable Player trophy in the Rose Bowl. In 1920, Halas became a clerk in the Staley Company’s scale house, weighing deliveries of corn and playing and coaching the company’s new semi-pro football team, the Decatur Staley’s. After a couple of years, Gene Staley realized that the football team wasn’t bringing his company the publicity he sought and was losing money. So he gave Halas the team on the condition that Halas keep the name Decatur Staley’s for a year. Then Halas could do what he wanted with his team. He also gave Halas $5,000 to pay his players. Halas took the team to Chicago, and as they say, the rest is history. The team became the Chicago Bears and Halas went on to the Hall of Fame, as did four more of Staley’s players. Today, the Chicago Bears’ mascot is named “Staley” in honor of Gene Staley, and if you look closely during a game, you can see his name on the back of his jersey. “Without Gene Staley there never would have been the Chicago Bears,” Halas later said, “and the Staley Company was indirectly and partially responsible for the founding of the National Football League.” Augustus Eugene Staley died on the day after Christmas, 1940, in Florida. The Illinois Central Railroad put a private baggage car to carry Gene Staley’s body back to Decatur. The casket, solid bronze, weighed 1800 pounds. The Governor of Illinois was one of the honorary pallbearers at the funeral. But the honor of accompanying the coffin to the cemetery went to laborers from his factory. So that’s the story the Spencer Films came to Liberty to record. They stopped by Liberty’s Patterson Cottage to interview Warren Dixon and Jack Garner. Dixon is the Patterson Cottage Committee Chairman and Garner’s uncle was married to A.E. Staley’s sister Willa. Garner remembered going to his aunt’s farm, the same farm on which A.E. Staley was raised, and seeing all new farm equipment, sent south by Staley from Decatur. The Patterson Cottage has a rifle owned by A.E. Staley’s father, a feed sack from the Staley factory and a couple of 1928 Staley Syrup cookbooks, plus an 1982 book on Staley. “We also have a replica Decatur Staley’s football jersey,” Dixon said. “And we love to tell the story of the Chicago Bears.” The documentary company also visited Shiloh Church where A.E. Staley’s parents are buried and the site of the family farm on Old Red Cross Rd. Julie Staley said there was no deadline for the film to air and that she would notify members of the Patterson Cottage when it would occur. It should be a good story, local boy does good, goes from tobacco farm to multimillionaire, plus is instrumental in founding the Chicago Bears. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Friends It occurred to Pooh and Piglet that they hadn't heard from Eeyore for several days, so they put on their hats and coats and trotted across the Hundred Acre Wood to Eeyore's stick house.

Inside the house was Eeyore.

Town of liberty news The Town of Liberty received funding from the EPA through the Piedmont Triad Regional Council (PTRC) to remove some underground storage tanks that are no longer in use.

"Hello Pooh. Hello Piglet "said Eeyore, in a Glum Sounding Voice.

"We just thought we'd check in on you," said Piglet, "because we hadn't heard from you, and so we wanted to know if you were okay."

Eeyore was silent for a moment. "Am I okay?" he asked, eventually. "Well, I don't know, to be honest. Are any of us really okay? That's what I ask myself. All I can tell you, Pooh and Piglet, is that right now I feel really rather Sad, and Alone, and Not Much Fun To Be Around At All. Which is why I haven't bothered you. Pooh looked and Piglet, and Piglet looked at Pooh, and they both sat down, one on either side of Eeyore in his stick house.

Eeyore looked at them in surprise. "What are you doing?"

"We're sitting here with you," said Pooh, "because we are your friends. And true friends don't care if someone is feeling Sad, or Alone, or Not Much Fun To Be Around At All. True friends are there for you anyway. And so here we are."

"Oh," said Eeyore. "Oh." And the three of them sat there in silence, and while Pooh and Piglet said nothing at all; somehow, almost imperceptibly, Eeyore started to feel a very tiny little bit better.

A Look Behind The Scenes Of Liberty’s New Restaurant “ Ole Hickory Smokehouse” I had the pleasure to learn more about Ole Hickory Smokehouse that is owned and operated by James Bishop and Kimberly Jarman this past week.

Ole Hickory Smokehouse is located at 516 N Fayetteville St, Liberty in the location that use to Beaver Creek BBQ. But this place has took on a whole new look with major remodeling inside and outside. James and Kimberly gave me a behind the scenes to investigate a day at this great place. It started early, with James and his son firing up the H2O Smoker out back. It was so amazing to see the Hickory and Oak wood fire up and pillows of smoke pour out the stacks. The aroma was making me think of the food I had the night before. They said they also through in Cherry and Pear wood at different times. The water base smoker also has apple cider vinegar that is part of the magic. I asked James how he found this smoker. James and Kimberly said, “Well to be truthful I had never smoke before this. I started off watching BBQ Pitmaster Show and 100’s of hours of videos online and I came across Myron Mixon and know his H2O Smoker was the one I wanted. I took off to Georgia to check it out.” When you think of the name “Ole Hickory Smokehouse” everyone thinks BBQ Pork, but this place is more than that, it all smoked items, from chicken quarters, pork, beef brisket and ribs. They have three amazing base sauces and they are sweet, vinegar and spicy. What are more amazing folks are learning their own unique mix. For example, I personally move mixing the sweet and the spicy together. Your next visit has some fun experimenting. Once the smoker heats up it time to throw some meat on. James educated that different meats go on at different times. What is even more amazing, all his meat is fresh and prepped in the kitchen. A cool fact the distribution hub he gets his fresh vegetables said he has set a record for the most collards bought in NC on a constant basis. You will see huge red numbers above the kitchen window, 225, that is the cooking temperature. Some facts that people do not understand about the smoked meats, they wanted to clarify. They shared, “The chicken will always have a red tint due to the smoking, but its internal temp is done, several are afraid the chicken is not done. Another fact that people say, is that the meat is burnt. Well that is far from the truth. We put a

rub on there and that consists of rubbing with brown sugar base that will marbleize and caramelize on the meat. It appears burnt but it is not and has a great flavor. “James also talk me more about the beef briskets. You have two types on the meat, the point which is a marble fat and the point with is a lean cut. When ordering brisket, you can ask for a specific cut. Brisket for example is an art, you do not know if you have a good product until it is done cooking. 6am the meats go on and after about 8 to 10 hours of cooking and reaching the perfect internal temp you pull it off. But wait you still done know if it a great meat yet, due to the fact you must wrap the meat and let it rest for about another 2 to 3 hours. Perfection, you have a great tasting meat. Another item I love is his collards. He cooks them for 5 hours to get the right texture. Plus make sure to taste their mac and cheese. The other great thing about this venue is that have live music. Right now, its every Thursday with Cory Luetjen is there each Thursday. Cory is a favorite player at Lucky’s Bar and Grill. Every Friday and Saturday night they have a 8 week rotation of entertainment. James said, “The music has been such a success that we are working on having Wednesday night and looking at a Tuesday night open mic night (with prescreening).” The bar is incredibly unique also. They have several taps and one special is local Read Oak and Hummingbird. I found out you can a mix of taps for a unique flavor. Example a combination of Read Oak and Hummingbird will give you what they call Redbird. The inside décor is another marvel to see. For example, an antique sign caught my eye. I asked them about it. “This old signed stating (Hickory Mountain Farms, Inc – Country Style Ham) was found on old truck parked at the current Brookwood Farms in Siler City. We were able to purchase and drill the rivets out and bring sign here. We learned this was the original business that is now know by everyone as Brookwood Farms. Several other pieces are from local areas and some recreations. Make sure to look around.,” shared by James and Kimberly. I also love the old gas pump to bed of truck mounted to wall as a bench. Well I would highly recommend either stopping in to dine inside or outside on the patio area. If you want to dine at home, they overtake out. Liberty is lucky to have a great new establishment like this. So, Liberty, let's support this business. Ole Smoke Liberty Leader Editorial Submitted By Ted Watkins Smoke, “BBQ”, ole hickory; what comes to mind when you hear these words?

Here in North Carolina one would instantly think of a “BBQ joint” with tender meat, smoked to perfection the ole school way, and a variety of sauces to finish it off to your liking. But wait, we left a few words out: live music, crafted cocktails, relaxed environment and local brews on tap. Now put these words together and Liberty has its newest establishment, Ole Hickory Smokehouse! Like a newborn babe, the new kid on the block, the folks of Liberty are filled with excitement to welcome the newcomer, experience something new, nurture a new member of the community, and maybe even hesitate a little, unsure of something “new” and “different”. My time in the restaurant, speaking with Kim, I had the opportunity to hear their story, their vision, their experience in the industry and commitment to our little town’s economy.

I experienced Ole Hickory Smoke several times over the course of Friday & Saturday, yes spoiler alert, it is that good I went three times.

Earlier we considered what came to mind with the words of BBQ, smoke and hickory and I mentioned the physical attributes of food, naturally.

However, the quality and experience of a meal not only relies on the actual food, but also the surrounding elements and aesthetics of a restaurant.

Before you even walk into the restaurant there are new and exciting attributes that draw you in. Perfect for summer afternoons, cool fall and spring evenings, a covered and screened patio has been installed on the façade of what previously was just a brick building. If you need a spot to wait, pop a squat on the custom truck bed bench! Now let us go inside!

Stripped down to the studs, Kim and James truly invested quality into the restaurant. Blacked out ceiling tiles, grey/”smokey” walls, industrial fixtures of metal pipe, tin siding, unique vintage décor, and prohibition themed photos are tied together with two fantastic focal points. Depending on which night of the week it is, your attention is quickly drawn to live music on the new corner stage decked out in vintage metal signage, an old school gas pump and custom cut front end of a Chevy. Now if you are like me, you may have instantly noticed the biggest change and that is the full-length bar to the right. Complete with local beer taps and a wide array of spirits, their bar team are ready for your favorite cocktail, whiskey on the rocks or for you to simply take a gander if you are under 21, hah! You must be thinking, tell us about the food, they are a restaurant after all! The food, oh the food.

Smoked fresh every morning, yes every morning, their menu provides ample choices of your favorite smoked meats such as pork, chicken, ribs, and brisket (so tender a fork can cut into while it falls apart melting in your mouth)! My step-father, who rarely ventures out on the town, couldn’t stop raving about the brisket, the fun he had, already asking me when are we going back! Back to the food. Feel free to choose 1, 2, or even 3 meats paired with a selection of homemade sides such as baked beans, collard greens, mac and cheese (what a stunner), a cool twist on potato salad, sweet potato praline casserole (might make your grandma cry it’s so good), and much more. Lastly, wrap it all up with a sweet treat from their dessert menu!

Dedication and quality, these are the words I think of after my experience with Ole Hickory Smoke. A dedicated staff to each area of the restaurant operation: hostess/host, adequate service staff, bar staff and a culinary team viewable from the open-kitchen concept. Quality is something we assess in many ways from what we initially can see (or lacking thereof that we do not see), and we know this from our interactions with restaurants, businesses, and services in and outside of Liberty, Greensboro, and surrounding cities. The team at ‘Ole Hickory Smoke’ have taken the time to study the area, our economy, and where our hospitality dollars go, while considering locality to provide a quality experience at a fair and reasonable price point. Now that deserves a ‘kudos’! Spending Saturday evening with my sisters and mom brought me to pause and think, we are only 5 minutes from the house, and we are having a few cocktails, laughs and fantastic conversation with ownership. This spurred even more thought; why spend our dollars outside of Liberty if we can choose to support local initiatives, why not keep dollars, talent, and memories local?

The more we do this, the more we inspire sparks of growth, new business, and prosperity for our town. Ole Hickory Smokehouse is your opportunity to do so, and your opportunity to carry the flame of growth that their restaurant has sparked. Presents “They believe W-H-A-T ?

How can they think T-H-A-T ?”

Your life is in a car. You were born, put into your car seat, and off you went toward wherever life and the driver of that car took you. The people in the front seat were your parents, and what they said was ‘how it was’. These are the values in our family. This is how we do things in our life/car/house. You learned ‘life’, whether it flowed easy or whether you were ‘on your own’ and had to make things happen for yourself. You can now look back on your childhood. But you can understand it in a whole new way.

Let’s pretend that your whole life is in that car. Let’s pretend that the tint of the car windows represent all the things that were important for your parents or teachers or religious leaders to teach to you. So what you see through those windows would be affected or colored by what you thought was ‘the way to be’.

Now everybody else was born into a different car. They believed everything that they were told by all the people in their car. So when they look out of their window, through the tinted glass, they are seeing life through the filters of what they were taught was the way to live and the way to do things. Their VIEW of life.

Down to the very foods you liked, Mom was the Best Cook. You thought every family was just the same as your family. The habits of cleanliness, or personal grooming were taught to you there. The need to always wear the latest fad or not was taught to you there. Athletics, joys of outdoors or which pets…

Think of all the ways you are influenced in your car/life. Where is the car? In the mountains, on the coast, on an island, in any one of the dozens of different countries on the globe. What affect did that have on the people in the car? They believe and enjoy totally different things, because that is the only thing that they know. Let’s add in another issue that changes your present, past and future. When you experience an event in your life, it changes how you see what happened to you in your past. People have revelations, ah-has and turning over new leaves, based on an event like severe illness, accident or injury!

Remember this; those people in the front seat, came from their own car, where they learned what THEY know about how ‘life should or should not be’! When you watched the relationship of the people in the front seat of your car, what was it like? How did these people treat each other? Was Dad the boss of the family, or did Mom run the show? How they treated each other had everything to do with your own relationships, because you grew up thinking that this is how all people must live. You copied them or not.

And what about all the people, few people or no people that joined you in that back seat? As you grew, you got out of the infant seat, because there were other infants that followed you perhaps. There were older people in that back seat, too, maybe, and that created other ways that you thought all life was lived. You either had to deal with older or younger siblings, and the chaos that they created!

EVERYBODY grew up in their own car/life thinking that THIS is the ONLY way that life can be. THIS is what I believe. This is how it is in the world, forgetting that the world is a very big place.

Now something happens sometimes when people are growing up. They rebel! They break the window of their beliefs or they throw open the door of the car and run as fast as they can away from what they just can no longer tolerate! They push away things that they cannot agree with, and give themselves the things that their folks could not or would not give them. They left that car, but they carried those experiences and lessons with them, deep inside, so deep that they do not notice!

Sometimes they stay away for years, and put children in the back of their own car. They may see what it was that sent them away, and grow into themselves enough to allow everyone to have their own belief system. Sometimes they swear that they will not do, in their car, what their parents did…only to watch it play out precisely before their very eyes. How can we not see this dilemma in ourselves and others? Everyone HAS their own belief system, based on whatever it is based upon, which is MOSTLY the early years of what happened in their car/life! And there are as many different ways to look at the world as there are people in it. So where does this leave us?

Look at yourself, look at your life, look at your past memory of how you grew up. Everybody can look at this and see clearly that WHATEVER somebody says they believe is totally based on whatever they have been taught to believe, by someone in life. What about the lessons/experiences/beliefs that you cannot see?

You have carried the tinted glass of those back windows with you, and that is what makes you ‘fight’ for your OWN way. That is what makes you say, “This is how it is! This is how it should be!” How can we be so hard on each other or ourselves for what got into our heads in that car/life?

Can we simply take a deep breath and realize, know, that we got to be ‘us’ in millions of interactions in life. Others got to be ‘them’ in millions of interactions in life. Can we actually SEE this and begin to have a conversation about that? Instead of arguing about how things SHOULD be, in our view, can we open the door to seeing and having conversation about, perhaps, how someone else’s SHOULD got to be how it is? We could enjoy some funny times, as they remember. We could re-live some sad times as we remember. But it would not need to be an argument or a fight. We could probably find out how much alike we are, instead of pounding away at our differences.

If it’s the ONLY life that you have ever known and it’s the only WAY that you have ever known…when you come up against anything different from how it is supposed to be, then you feel you MUST get everyone to see how it should be, from your point of view. And THEY feel the same way!

People who cannot see how we all got to be how we are, will fight for what they have been taught is RIGHT. If they had been taught the opposite point of view, then they would be fighting for that one. Isn’t it time to put down the whip that you’ve used to whip others into what you think they should be? Nobody wins in war except for the Firearms makers, who supply both sides. Nobody wins in court, fighting for what they believe is right, except for the Lawyers who serve both sides.

Fighting simply makes the ‘other side’ fight back. So what is the answer? UNDERSTANDING. You can now understand What they believe, and How they think!

And you also Understand more about yourself, what you believe and how you think. Amen!

I had the pleasure to talk to Alison Peeler with Liberty Acres prior to my visit on their grand opening on August 1. Alison shared, “I started this new business venture in January 2020 based on a lifetime’s passion for animal preservation & conservation. Liberty Acres, LLC (“L.A.C.E.”) opens to school groups, children’s organizations, & the general public August 1st, so we can share these amazing animals and help promote education & increase interest for both the animals & their environments. We can save species, both local & abroad, by providing their information and enhancing awareness. We also offer rescue for birds and exotic species from pet trade and private homes when needed. “ She further added,” Liberty Acres, LLC is located in Liberty, NC, on a 100 acre farm whose mission is Conservation & Education for domestic and exotic animals. We will be focusing on children’s educational activities, guided tours, open walk-throughs, Home School Programs, and the list grows daily.
