Change is Good…..

The Liberty Chamber of Commerce made some changes to its Annual Banquet this year. Fun was added to the agenda!

It was a beautiful evening at the “Roost” where the banquet was held. The elegantly rustic venue provided the perfect setting for the new, more relaxed format.

Guests had an opportunity to mingle, socialize and interact with one another. A prime rib and chicken meal, catered by “Simply Southern Catering” was delicious. Comedian Renee Henderson, provided some comic relief during dinner. DJ Cleave Caviness entertained with a variety of dance music. An assortment of props and an elegant background provided a photo booth area, for guests to engage in more fun. Silent Auction items donated by local and area businesses provided another layer of entertainment, as guests bid on their favorites.

The highlight of the evening remained the Awards Ceremony. Each year the Liberty Chamber of Commerce awards, outstanding representatives, who go above and beyond to give back to our community.

This year’s 2017 Awards were as follows.

Church of the Year: Sandy Creek Baptist Church Volunteer of the Year: Lori Cobb; Faith Community Nurse Business Person of the Year: JB Griffith III of Liberty Advisors.

Business of the Year: Supertex; Ed Cummins Over all the 2017 Liberty Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet was a lot of fun! Going forward, we will continue to uphold this standard of fun for our Banquets. We hope you will join us next year.

 Rodeo Company and Arena is presenting their 14th annual Jeff Hinson Memorial North Carolina High School Rodeo. It will be held on May 5th and May 6th at 7:00 pm at the Lucky J Arena on Hwy 64 East of Ramseur. The arena is at the intersection of Hwy 64 and Shady Grove Road near Ramseur. The purpose of this event is to raise scholarship money for graduating FFA members, assist in sending FFA members to local, state, and national leadership conferences, and to help financially support the Agriculture Education/FFA programs at Eastern Randolph High School and Southeastern Randolph Middle School.

This event is being governed by the N.C. High School Rodeo Association. They are a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of sportsmanship, horsemanship, and character in the youth of our state. They give high school students the opportunity to participate and compete in this unique and challenging sport. The NCHSRA offers a rodeo program that sets high school rodeo apart from the other varsity sports. The athletes compete on a scale comparable to collegiate and professional rodeo competitors. Contestants will compete in the following events: Bull Riding, Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Breakaway Calf Roping, Cattle Cutting, Team Roping, Goat Tying, Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Calf Roping, & Steer Wrestling.

There are over 40 local sponsors many of whom have sponsored all thirteen of the rodeo events. Wayne Thomas Chevrolet & Cadillac is the overall sponsor of this event.

Other major sponsors are Langley Grading of Staley, Harvest House of Ramseur, Swaim Heating and Air Conditioning of Climax, Randolph County Farm Bureau, Liberty Farm and Garden, Randolph County Livestock and Poultry Improvement Association, Carolina Stockyards of Siler City, Cox Industries/Structural Woods of Coleridge, James River Equipment of Asheboro, Caviness Farms Grading, Inc. of Siler City.

Food sales will start at 5:30 pm for participants and people attending the rodeo event. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the gate. Children 5 years and under get in free. Tickets can be purchased at Eastern Randolph High School and the Wayne Thomas Dealership in Asheboro. This is a family event and we will have activities for young children each night. 100 Man Project, Inc News for April 2017 Spring is here and the 2017 Dental Clinic is in full bloom.

The kick-off day, March 7, was a successful day in signing up clients who are low income and those with no dental insurance. Registration is now closed as we are completely booked and a waiting list is compiled.

We will be confirming reservations in a couple of weeks. When we call please confirm immediately in order to insure your appointment. The Clinic will be June 2nd, 2017 at the Fire Department in Liberty.

The reading program for 2017 is coming to an end at Liberty Elementary School and Liberty Library the winners will be awarded very nice prizes for reading the most books this year. We will be announcing the dedicated winners next month.

Our new car for the 100 Man Project, Inc will be arriving this month. With this car we will be able to serve our clients with more dependable and safer transportation to their appointments. The purchase of this car was all made possible with donations from you generous people and grants. Thank you to all.

Members of the Project are sponsoring an Appreciation Dinner on April 18th for the volunteers who have made the Dental Clinic, the C.A.R.S. Project, and the Reading Program possible this year. This appreciation dinner is paid for by members of the project not from donations to the 100 Man Project, Inc.

Free Cervical Cancer Screening Open to the Community More than 12,000 new cases of invasive cervical cancer will be diagnosed in women in the United States this year and over 4,000 women will die from the disease. The American Cancer Society recommends that all women should begin cervical cancer testing (screening) at age 21. Women aged 21 to 29, should have a Pap test every 3 years.

To help promote early detection, Randolph Health Cancer Center, Cone Health Cancer Center and Central Carolina Women’s Center will be hosting a free cervical cancer screening on Friday, April 28th, 2017 from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. at Central Carolina Women’s Center, 136 S. Park St., Asheboro. The screening is open to all women who are 21 years of age and older who meet the following criteria: • Women who are sexually active or have been sexually active, or have never had a pap smear or have not had a pap smear within the last three years.

• Women who do not have insurance or cannot afford to see a physician.

The Liberty Leader Newspaper Come and See By: Andy Clapp As the women went to the tomb on Resurrection morning, a question troubled them along the way. As Mark wrote about Resurrection morning, he pointed out, “They were saying to one another, ‘Who will roll away the stone from the entrance of the tomb for us?’” (Mark 16:3) Truly, the question was justifiable. The stone large enough that no one person could roll it away. In fact, according to what Matthew tells us, the stone was sealed, which would make it an offense to try to move the stone. How can it be done? The question puzzled them but they continued on the road anyways.

The very next verse in Mark captures a moment where the human understanding of how intersects with God’s ability to move. Mark wrote, “Looking up, they observed that the stone – which was very large – had been rolled away.” (Mark 16:4) During their journey to the tomb, they wondered how it could be done. They arrived at the tomb to find out that the seemingly immovable stone had been moved already by God. Man tried to figure it out; God already had it worked out.

As we celebrate Easter this year, we look at the journeys of this life and see those things that seem to stand in the way. We wonder how we can get through it or go around it, but fail to see that God is incredible at moving those things.

Then, He calls us to come and see what He has done. The stone was not rolled away so Jesus could escape the grave. We know that from the story in the gospel of John. John wrote, “In the evening of that first day of the week, the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because of their fear of the Jews. Then Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, ‘Peace to you!’” (John 20:19) He appeared to the disciples though the room was locked up tight, proving that nothing could stop Him from coming to them.

The stone was rolled away for the people to see the power of God on display and for all to enter in and see what had taken place. He could have left the stone in place and showed up right behind them. He could have taken the top off the tomb. God could have performed this miracle in any way He wanted, but what He created by rolling the stone away was an open door for all to come and to see. So this Easter, you are invited. You are invited to come into the open door and see what God has done. You are invited to see with your own eyes that the tomb remains empty. You are invited to see the power of God, not only to roll away the giant boulders of life, but to breathe life into what was dead. Please come and see, for if you do, you will find all you need.

CIVITAN AWARENESS MONTH April is Civitan Awareness Month. Civitan International and North Carolina District West is looking to start a club in your Area.

Civitan International is an organization of volunteer service clubs around the world, dedicated to helping people in their own communities. Civitans help wherever the need arises-from collecting food for the homeless, to volunteering in retirement homes, to building playground equipment for children with disabilities.

Civitan’s have been helping people since 1917, the year the Organization was founded. Birmingham, Alabama is the birthplace of Civitan. The Birmingham, Alabama Civitan Club was the first Civitan club and has just celebrated their 100th birthday.

In the 1950’s, Civitan adopted a special emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities. Civitan was one of the major supporters of Special Olympics International. Civitans still supports Special Olympics today.

Construction Begins Liberty Veterans Memorial and Gardens On Saturday April 29, 2017 at 10:00 AM the Board of Directors of LVMG will host a Ground Breaking Ceremony at the new memorial site on Swannanoa Ave between Liberty Police Dept and ABC Store, across from Food Lion.

Everyone is invited to attend.

The focus of building a memorial tribute began in 2011 for all Military Veterans. Individuals that have served or continue to serve our nation by protecting our freedoms on our homeland or abroad. Many fundraisers have proved to be beneficial toward raising the needed funds for construction.

Individuals and businesses have given generous contributions of needed dollars for something they believe in. Our board of directors and committee members have been the heart that has kept this fight moving forward by volunteering many hours of their personal time to prove we can do this.

As this dream is about to become reality there are a lot of you folks that has not submitted your registration form, registration fee, and proof of service or DD-214. These items are necessary to have a Veteran’s Name engraved in the Granite Monuments. Through May 15, 2017 the price for an engraving request will remain at $150.00 with $135.00 of those dollars tax deductible. On May 16, 2017 the price will increase to $190.00 per engraving request. All engraving prior to May 15 will be done at the Granite Company’s facilities, after May 15 engraving will be done sometime later after the granite is installed at the memorial site. Also, remember quality control is much better at the factory. We encourage everyone to stop procrastinating with questions “of” or “if” we are going to build this memorial. WE promise you as we have always said “it will be built somewhere” by a group of dedicated individuals not willing to give up.

Substance Abuse & Mental Health Symposium Set for May 19 at RCC to Focus on Prescribed Addiction Addiction to prescribed painkillers will be the topic of an upcoming symposium at Randolph Community College in May. The “2017 Substance Abuse & Mental Health Symposium: The Prescribed Addiction” is scheduled for 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Friday, May 19 in the JB and Claire Davis Corporate Training Center in the Continuing Education and Industrial Center at 413 Industrial Park Avenue. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be offered.

Two keynote speakers, Dr. Emily Mullen and Dr. Shawn DaltonBethea, will discuss the growing issue, as well as alternatives to pain meds for managing chronic pain.

Dr. Mullen is associate program director of the internal medicine residency program for Cone Health and assistant professor of medicine for the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Dr. Dalton-Bethea has been a practicing medicine and rehabilitation specialist since January 2006. She is certified in pain medicine and board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation.

The symposium will also feature a community panel of individuals who have personally dealt with addiction and relapse related to the use of prescribed pain medications.

In addition, a brief overview will be given of the following upcoming classes at RCC: “Mental Health First Aid” and “Health & Wellness Coach.”

Breakfast and lunch will be provided, and the cost is only $20. Scholarships are available. Space is limited, so register early by calling 336-633-0268.

Randolph Community College will host its annual Veterans Benefits Fair from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18 in the Foundation Conference Center on the Asheboro Campus. Veterans will be able t o fi n d information on health care, VA loans, education benefits, counseling, disability, service dogs, employment, and more at the event, which is open to RCC students and the public. Summer Enrichment Redefines My Success will provide transitional support to rising sixth and seventh grade students at Southeastern Randolph Middle School through a positive summer week designed to create enthusiasm for the upcoming school year through community engagement. Rising sixth and seventh grade students will be invited to participate in a summer experience offering academic and community engagement infused with team-building events, transition activities, student choice, and project based learning. The program will be offered for four separate four-day weeks, following a similar structure each week. “Agriculture Monday” will be designed around neighboring Eastern Randolph High School’s award winning agriculture program. “Business Tuesday” will be held on the campus of Southeastern Randolph Middle School with a focus on community engagement and technology tools. “Health Sciences Wednesday” will be another off-site day, allowing exploration of many avenues to access health science fields.

“Community Engagement Thursday” will offer students the unique opportunity to delve deeper in the area of their choice (agriculture, business, or health sciences), spending a day exploring their own community at a deeper level from a targeted perspective including three interactive stops throughout the day. The final day will culminate with presentations from students in a gallery walk format that will allow parents to observe the projects students completed throughout the week.

The camp experience will run 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. Transportation to all activities during the day will be provided. Additionally, morning and afternoon door-to-door transportation will be provided for specific geographic zones throughout the four-week experience. Students will be provided a lunch and snack each day. The camp fee is $25 for the entire week. This fee is refundable upon successful completion of the entire week of camp. Cub Scouts Shout Out

By Belle Windham Liberty's Cub Scout Pack 502 has had a very busy and fun year. It all started with an ice cream social, then a visit from the Liberty Fire Department. Everyone's favorite event is the annual Pinewood Derby race, which is a tradition dating back to 1953. The Scouts designed and built custom race cars from blocks of wood and raced them on a track. There were winners in 3 categories; speed, design and beauty. The Scouts loved cheering for their friends and their own cars and there was lots of laughter and even a pizza party to close out the event.

The Scouts have worked together to achieve a goal of every Cub making rank by the Blue & Gold banquet, which was held on March 25th. Blue & Gold is a banquet held to celebrate the Anniversary of Cub Scouting and all the boy's hard work in earning their Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos and Arrow of Light ranks. All the active Scouts in Pack 502 received their rank at this year's Blue & Gold banquet.

They celebrated with their friends and family, a potluck and a cake off. That same evening, the Arrow of Light Scouts crossed over to Boy Scouts, leaving Cub Scouting behind and embarking on a brand new adventure. Next year an exciting new program will be in effect that allows Kindergarteners to join Cub Scouts as Lion Cubs. Previously a child had to wait until 1st grade or 7 years old to join Cub Scouts. Pack 502 is proud to be opening the Celebrate Liberty MayFest with a flag ceremony at 10am.

RCC Plans Mental Health First Aid Course for April, June Randolph Community College’s Workforce Development and Continuing Education Division will offer a groundbreaking public education program, “Mental Health First Aid,” that is designed for all members of the community.

Two sessions are scheduled, the first (#61009) is set for 8 a.m.5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18, in the Continuing Education and Industrial Center at 413 Industrial Park Avenue. The second session (#61010) is set for the same hours and location on Thursday, June 15.

Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour course that gives people the skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. It is a peer reviewed program which has been shown to save lives, improve the mental health of the individual administering care and the one receiving it, expand knowledge of mental illnesses and their treatments, increase the services provided, and reduce overall social distance toward individuals with mental illnesses by improving mental health literacy.

The National Council for Behavioral Health reports that, “The [Mental Health First Aid] program, delivered to nearly 100,000 people across the country through a network of 2,500+ instructors, has already saved lives and brought hope to many.”

WRC’s Herb Festival Celebrates Two Decades The 20th Annual Herb Festival is scheduled for April 20-22 at First Presbyterian Church, 508 W. Davis St. in Burlington. We will be selling certified organic herbs, beautiful annuals and perennials, vegetable and heirloom tomato plants, and there will be vendors of specialty items as well. Automotive Standards Workshop Set for April 18 & 20 at RCC

Randolph Community College’s Workforce Development and Continuing Education will offer a two-day “IATF 16949 Standard Workshop” in April for organizations in the automotive industry who need to transition to this new standard.

IATF 16949:2016 is the new Quality Management System (QMS) standard for organizations in the automotive industry. This new standard will supersede and replace the current ISO/TS 16949:2009 standard. All organizations currently certified to ISO/TS 16949:2009 will need to successfully transition by Sept. 14, 2018.

This overview provides participants with a basic understanding of the meaning and scope of the new IATF 16949 of Quality Standards and acquaints them with guidelines to help them assess the appropriateness and value of certification and registration in their own organization. Ten standards in the new IATF 16949 series will be discussed along with current procedures for registration, who is registered in the United States, and the probable costs and expectations of third party auditing services. This course also examines the actions to address risks and opportunities.

The workshop will be held from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, April 18 and 20, in Room 223 of the Continuing Education and Industrial Center on the Asheboro Campus. The cost of the workshop is $150.

The Minority “Let’s go Back” Learn a little bit more about a group of local performing at Celebrate Liberty's Mayfest on Sat May 20. The Minority, started their journey at Providence Grove High school. Two very different people, Marcus Hopson and Jordan Gates, met in Honors Vocal Ensemble. After years of singing in an ensemble, they decided to create their own music as Hop n’ Gates.

Underneath a full moon, they wrote their very first song. As time passed they would go on to write 62 more. Their style, influenced by David Bowie, Neil Young, Alice in Chains, and Johnny Cash, brings a whole new sound back to the people. Follow them on their journey @theminority3 via Facebook. 6th Annual Boomer, Senior & Caregiver Expo Planned for Randolph County

Asheboro, NC— The sixth annual Randolph County Boomer, Senior & Caregiver Expo is scheduled for Wednesday, May 17th, 2017 at Randolph Mall from 10 a.m. – 2p.m. The Expo will be free and open to the public.

The Expo will provide an opportunity to enhance the health and wellness of baby boomers, senior citizens and caregivers by connecting them to local resources in their own community. This will be a free, one stop opportunity for individuals to learn about resources in the community at a fun and friendly event designed just for them. The event will offer free health screenings, unique entertainment and numerous educational/informational booths.
