Za pierwsze pieniądze kupiłem do swojej pracowni zaawansowane maszyny. Do cięcia metalu, obróbki drewna. Bardzo drogie. I ten wydatek przez długi czas wydawał się całkiem bez sensu, bo nikt nie oczekiwał ode mnie wykonywania prototypów. Przez kilka trudnych lat zawodowej posuchy - ciągle wbrew rozsądkowi - inwestowałem w narzędzia. Intuicja mnie nie zawiodła. W 2013 roku pokazałem gotowy do wdrożenia fotel „Oyster”. I wszystko się zmieniło.

Usłyszałem nawet od kogoś, że teraz inni będą mieli trudniej, bo szkice już nie wystarczą – mówi projektant Krystian Kowalski.

Break the ceiling of your own head “The first thing I bought were machines for my studio. Some allowed me to cut metal, others to process wood. They were very expensive. For a very long time, this expense seemed completely absurd, as no one expected me to create prototypes. For a few hard years of my career, beyond all reason, I invested in tools. My intuition did not fail me. In 2013, I presented my first armchair, “Oyster”. From then on, everything changed. I even heard someone say that I made it more difficult for everyone else, as sketches would not be sufficient anymore”, says the designer Krystian Kowalski.

Projektowanie w twoim wydaniu to proces złożony ze szczegółowo opisanych etapów. Właściwie podnosisz je do rangi nauki ścisłej. Tak je widzisz?

Przyznam, że w ten sposób nie myślałem. Mnie chodzi o profesjonalne podejście. A ono zakłada maksymalne zaangażowanie się w ten proces i wykorzystanie dostępnych narzędzi. Z jednej strony wysiłek intelektualny, bo przy każdym projekcie staram się przebić sufit własnej głowy i pokonać to największe ograniczenie, którym jestem dla siebie ja sam.

A z drugiej ‒ takie wykorzystanie techniki i technologii, które pozwoli mi ten cel zrealizować.

Projektowanie nie kończy się u ciebie na projekcie. Nie jesteś dizajnerem, który po prostu oddaje szkic.

To wielki grzech projektantów. Ci, którzy tak pracują, będą się smażyć w projektowym piekle. Bo to działanie na szkodę wszystkich zaangażowanych stron ‒ od projektanta, poprzez producenta, aż po użytkownika i sam produkt końcowy. Łatwo stworzyć koncepcję, pokazać rysunki, wizualizacje czy nawet model w skali ‒ i resztę zmartwienia pozostawić producentowi. To pójście na łatwiznę i zamknięcie projektowi drogi rozwoju.

Bo rysunek czy model to podstawowy poziom. Kolejne etapy ‒ prototyp, próba technologii ‒ mogą wiele zmienić we wstępnej koncepcji.

Projekt realizowany bez udziału projektanta może wiele stracić.

Producent ryzykuje, że będzie rozwijał koncepcję niesprawdzoną, która okaże się nie tak atrakcyjna, jak oczekiwał. Konieczne zmiany wprowadzone bez projektanta mogą całkiem zepsuć wstępną koncepcję. Wtedy z kolei traci projektant, może mieć żal. Ale to bzdura ‒ po prostu jego praca nie była dobra, bo zatrzymał się na etapie szkicu, nie wziął pod uwagę istotnych ograniczeń. W efekcie ‒ użytkownik dostanie słabszy produkt albo nie dostanie go wcale, bo zdarza się, że zniechęcony producent po prostu rezygnuje.

Co pojawia się jako pierwsze ‒- pomysł na przedmiot, do którego dobierasz technologię, czy też najpierw zachwyca cię technologia i myślisz, jak ją wykorzystać?

Oba te kierunki są prawdziwe. Zdarza się, że coś mi zaiskrzy w głowie, zaczynam o tym myśleć, przenoszę na papier. Kolejne szkice ujawniają jakieś problemy konstrukcyjne i eliminując je, szukam odpowiedniej technologii. Ale może być odwrotnie: ciekawa technologia, która daje całkiem nowe możliwości, inspiruje mnie do stworzenia na jej bazie przedmiotu.

W głowie projektanta nie ma spokoju, on nieustannie coś kombinuje, każda obserwacja może się stać zaczątkiem nowego przedmiotu. To praca, z której się nie wychodzi. Życiowo nie jest to dobre. Bo zamiast obierać ziemniaki, obsesyjnie myślę o projekcie. W sytuacjach rodzinnych i towarzyskich często się wyłączam ‒ zamiast być tu i teraz, projektuję w głowie.

Ale z drugiej strony to bardzo twórcze i daje wielką satysfakcję.

Wysiłek intelektualny to nie wszystko, często chyba też trzeba ubrudzić sobie ręce?

Wyobraźnia nie zawsze wystarcza, nie wszystkie niuanse, kształty, cechy materiałów, technologie da się przewidzieć w głowie, na papierze czy w komputerze. Praca manualna pozwala doprowadzić projekt do bardziej zaawansowanego etapu, zweryfikować pomysł, zbliżyć go do perfekcji.

Zawsze widziałeś projektowanie jako złożony proces sprzężony z technologią?

Wychowałem się na plenerach artystycznych, bo moi rodzice są rzeź-

In your case, designing is a process and consists of precisely described stages.

You actually turn it into a kind of exact science. Do you perceive it in such a way?

I must admit that I have never thought about it such a way. For me, a professional approach is crucial. It requires a maximum involvement in the process and the use of all available tools. On one side, you have the intellectual effort, as in each project I try to break the ceiling of my own head and prove that I am my biggest limitation. On the other, I try to use technology in a way that would allow me to achieve this goal.

Design is not only the project itself. You are not a designer who simply creates a sketch and hands it over to someone else.

This is the biggest sin of many designers. Those who work that way will rot in designer’s hell. Such approach harms everyone involved in the project: the designer, the producer, the user and the final product. It is easy to create a concept, present drawings and sketches, a visualization or even a model, and then let the producer do the rest of the work. But this is the easy way out and prevents the further development of a project. The drawing or model is the basic level. The next steps, such as prototypes and technology tests, can change the initial concept.

A project carried out without the designer’s participation can lose a lot.

The producer risks having to develop an untested concept that will finally turn out to be less attractive than he had previously expected. The necessary changes, implemented without the designer’s approval, could spoil the initial concept. In this case, the designer is affected and resents the producer. But he is wrong: his work simply was not good, because he backed out at the sketch stage and did not take important limitations into account. As a result, the user gets a worse product or does not receive it at all, as sometimes the producer decides to abandon the project.

What is first: the idea for an object, for which you then choose a technology, or a technology that inspires you and makes you think about various ways you can use it?

Both ways are justified. Sometimes I hit on an idea, I start thinking about it, and transfer it to paper. Subsequent sketches reveal construction problems and eliminate them, and I search for the right technology. But it can also be the other way round: an interesting technology, that gives me new possibilities, inspires me to create an object. A designer’s head is never calm, he keeps devising things and each observation can mark the beginning of a new object. You never leave work. This can be an issue if you want to live a normal life. Instead of peeling potatoes, you obsessively think about a project. When I am with my friends or family, I often tune out and start designing in my head. At the same time, it is very creative and gives you great satisfaction.

Intellectual effort is not all. I guess you also have to get dirty?

Imagination is not always enough. Not all nuances, shapes, qualities of materials, technologies can be predicted in your head, on paper or on a computer screen. Working with your own hands allows you to develop your project, test your ideas and achieve perfection.

Did you always perceive design as a complex process linked with technology?

When I was growing up, I used to spend a lot of time at plein-air workshops, as my parents are sculptors. I also played with form on my own, dizajn

biarzami. Uprawiałem tam własne zabawy z formą w glinie, drewnie.

I ‒ jak wynika z opowieści mamy ‒ były to rzeczy bardziej techniczne: składałem jakieś skrzyneczki, wycinałem klocki. Nie chodziło mi o samą wrażeniowość, lecz także o to, jak coś wykonać. Sztuka w czystej postaci mi nie wystarczała, potrzebowałem wiedzy technicznej, stąd wybór kierunku studiów ‒ wzornictwo na ASP. Ale na studiach w Warszawie mało uczyłem się o technologiach... Mimo to na dyplom licencjacki zrobiłem bardzo skomplikowane technicznie krzesło o organicznym kształcie. Najpierw wyrzeźbiłem je z gliny w negatywie, z którego potem zdjąłem gipsową formę i odlałem w niej cienkościenne krzesło z żywicy.

To bardzo trudny proces, ale wykonałem je rzetelnie, w naturalnej wielkości – żadne tam modele w skali. Chociaż nikt ode mnie tego nie wymagał, wystarczyłyby plansze z rysunkami. Po prostu czułem, że tak powinienem. Ale więcej o technologii dowiedziałem się dopiero na stażu w Bellini Studio w Mediolanie, gdzie moim zadaniem było rzeźbienie mebli w styropianie.

using clay or wood. My mom says that I mostly focused on the technical side of things: I used to put together boxes and carve blocks. It was not only about the sensations, I simply wanted to make something with my own hands. Art in its purest form was not enough, I needed technical knowledge, hence my choice of studies: Industrial Design at the Academy of Fine Arts. Although during my Warsaw studies I did not learn enough about technologies, my diploma was a technically complicated chair in an organic shape. I first sculpted it in clay as a negative, and then I removed the plaster form and casted a thin-walled resin chair. It is a very difficult process, but I did it thoroughly, in natural size, without using models on a smaller scale. No one expected it from me, boards with drawings would have probably been enough. I simply felt I should do it that way. I learned more about technology during my traineeship at the Bellini Studio in Milan, where I used to carve furniture in Styrofoam.

Krzesło „Trim”, twoja praca magisterska, jest produkowane do dziś.

Po powrocie z Mediolanu już wiedziałem, że projekt powstaje po to, by go wdrożyć. Był to swoisty przełom w moim podejściu do projektowania: myśleć nie tylko przemysłowo, ale również biznesowo. Tworząc „Trim”, przeszedłem też wszystkie etapy. Modele w skali 1:1 wycinałem i giąłem z płyty PCV. Gdy spodobały się producentowi, firmie Iker, razem pracowaliśmy nad siedziskiem z aluminium. Na obronę dyplomu wiozłem już modele od producenta. Na uczelni był to szok, że przedmiotem obrony jest produkt w trakcie wdrożenia.

Początkujący projektant wdraża projekt u wiodącego producenta.

Jak to się robi?

Pewnie miałem dużo szczęścia, ale bez determinacji i rozumienia pracy projektanta, o których mówiłem na początku, nic takiego by się nie wydarzyło. Ważne jest również, by wciąż się rozwijać.

Już po studiach w Warszawie pojechałeś na kolejne ‒- do Royal College of Art w Londynie.

The “Trim” chair, your graduation work, is being produced to this day.

After returning from Milan, I knew that a project comes into being so that it could go into production. This realization was a turning point in my approach to design: you should think not only in terms of industrial design, but also in terms of business. While working on “Trim”, I went through all the stages. I did models at a scale of 1:1, cutting them out of PVC. They appealed to people from the company Iker, who decided to produce the chair, and we worked on an aluminum seat together. I took these producer’s models to my graduation exam. People at the Academy of Fine Arts were shocked. After all, I was presenting a work that had already gone into production and was being implemented.

A novice designer implements a project in collaboration with a well-known producer. How do you do that?

I guess I was very lucky, but without determination and a thorough understanding of a designer’s work, nothing like this would have ever happened. It is also important to keep growing and developing yourself.

Right after graduating in Warsaw, you went to another college: the Royal College of Art in London.

I did not see any opportunities for development in Poland. While reading design

bios of designers in the book “Designing the 21st Century”, I noticed that 90% among them graduated from this college. I thought that this would be the perfect place for me. I also knew and liked London, I had spent a few summer holidays there, working as a rickshaw driver.

Stałeś się tam lepszym projektantem?

Pojechałem na studia artystyczne, a wyjechałem z doświadczeniem właściwie rzemieślniczym. Bo w przeciwieństwie do uczelni w Warszawie miałem tam dostęp do dość zaawansowanych, programowanych komputerowo maszyn. Przez siedem dni w tygodniu siedziałem w szkolnym warsztacie i uczyłem się technik ‒ obróbki metalu, cięcia, toczenia, spawania, obróbki drewna piłą, frezarką. To było bardzo cenne. Po powrocie z Londynu za pierwsze pieniądze kupiłem takie same maszyny, żeby pracować na nich we własnym studiu. Taki duży wydatek przez długi czas wydawał się całkiem bez sensu, bo nikt ode mnie nie oczekiwał prototypów. Kolejne trzy lata były bardzo trudną zawodową posuchą, a mimo to ciągle ‒ wydawałoby się ‒ wbrew rozsądkowi inwestowałem w narzędzia. Okazało się jednak, że intuicja mnie nie zawiodła. Około 2013 roku wszystko się zmieniło. Pokazałem firmie Comforty prototyp krzesła „Oyster” ‒ rzeźbione w styropianie, na spawanej ramie. Udało się i zaraz ruszyły tam kolejne projekty: krzesło „Ripple”, sofa „Classic” ‒ oczywiście najpierw wykonałem je ręcznie w swoim studiu. Równolegle pracowałem nad krzesłem „Nordic”, które zostało wdrożone przez Noti. Tu także sprawdziły się moje narzędzia do wykonania prototypu w drewnie.

To wszystko były projekty autorskie?

Tak, bo ja do tego czasu nie miałem kontaktów z firmami. Nie byłem też szczególnie błyskotliwym mówcą, żeby je oczarować. Po prostu zaniosłem coś konkretnego, nad czym wcześniej spędziłem dziesiątki czy setki godzin, bez pewności, że coś z tego będzie. Teraz mam już większy komfort pracy, bo wiele projektów realizuję w porozumieniu z firmami. Ale ciągle robię też rzeczy, których nikt mi nie zleca. Z jednej strony mam taką wewnętrzną potrzebę, a z drugiej ‒ obserwuję tendencje na rynku i staram się nadążać, a jeszcze lepiej być o krok przed nimi. To dla projektanta ważne, by wnosić coś nowego, przebić się przez typowość. Za każdym razem czymś zaskoczyć.

Dlaczego „Oyster” był przełomowy?

Połączyłem w nim walory artystyczne z technologicznymi. Nadałem mu formę rzeźbiarską, ale zaprojektowałem go w konkretnej technologii ‒ wylewanej pianki, której w firmie nie znali. Poszedłem tam z realną wiedzą. Jeszcze w 2007 roku zaprojektowałem dla nich fotel „Prism”.

Wdrożenie nie doszło wtedy do skutku, ale byłem w fabryce i widziałem, jak się to robi. „Oyster” zaniosłem producentowi gotowy do wdrożenia.

I tą drogą poszedłem z kolejnymi projektami. „Oyster” to także efekt moich poszukiwań ‒ jeszcze z czasów RCA ‒ na temat optymalizacji technologii.

Chciałem modyfikować wygląd mebla, ale w ramach wykorzystania tych samych elementów. Siedzisko „Oystera” może być w różny sposób ubrane ‒ zależnie od tego, czy to kołderka, czy poduszka, zmienia trochę charakter.

Który ze swoich projektów - poza „Oysterem” - uważasz dziś za najważniejszy?

Chyba każdy, nad którym akurat pracuję. Wszystkie napędzają mnie twórczo, dają motywację, by poszukiwać dalej. Akurat pod tym względem projektant ma wiele wspólnego z każdym innym artystą: potrzebę tworzenia.

Projektant jest nie tylko artystą. Rozmawiając z inwestorami, czasem trzeba powiedzieć, że artystą nie jest. Bo artyzm kojarzy im się z szaleńcem, z którym nie da się twórczo współpracować.

Did you become a better designer in London?

I went there to start artistic studies and returned to Poland with quasi-technical knowledge. In contrast with the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, the Royal College of Art gave me access to advanced, computer-operated machines. For seven days a week, I was learning countless techniques in our workshop: metal processing, cutting, lathing, welding, sawing, wood milling. It was a very valuable experience. After returning to Poland, the first thing I bought were the same machines I had in London. I wanted to use them in my own studio. For a very long time, this expense seemed completely absurd, as no one expected me to create prototypes. The next three years were a very hard time in my career, but I kept investing in new tools. It seemed absurd, but it turned out that my intuition did not fail me. Around 2013, everything changed.

I showed people from Comforty a prototype of my chair “Oyster”. It was carved in Styrofoam and based on a welded frame. It was success and I soon started working on other projects: the chair “Ripple” and the sofa “Classic”. Of course, I first made them manually in my studio. At the same time, I was working on my “Nordic” chair, later implemented by Noti. My tools turned out to be very useful, as they allowed me to create a wooden prototype.

These were all original projects?

Yes, I was not in touch with any companies at that time. I was not a brilliant, witty speaker, so I could not charm them. I simply gave them something solid, a model I had spent tens or hundreds of hours on. I did not know if it would lead to anything. Today, it is much easier for me, as I carry out many projects in collaboration with companies. But I still do things that no one orders. On the one hand, I simply have an internal need to do it, on the other, I observe the trends on the market and try to keep up with them or even be one step ahead. For a designer, it is really important to bring something new to the table, to keep surprising people.

Why was “Oyster” groundbreaking?

This project combined artistic and technological values. It had the form of a sculpture, but I designed it in a specific technology, with the use of a foam that was unknown to the people from the company. I went there with real knowledge. In 2007, I designed the armchair “Prism”. It did not go into production at that time, but I was at the factory and saw how it was done. “Oyster” was delivered to the producer as a product ready for implementation. I did the same with my other projects. “Oyster” was also a result of long searches and experiments involving the optimization of technology. I wanted to change the look of furniture but use the same elements. “Oyster’s” seat can be dressed in various ways: it looks different and has a slightly different nature depending on whether you use a duvet or a cushion.

Which of your projects, apart from “Oyster”, do you consider as the most important one?

Every project I am currently working on. They all inspire me, boost my creativity, motivate me to continue my search. In this respect, a designer is just like any other artist: he has the need to create. design

A designer is not only an artist. He should say that he is not an artist when he talks to investors, who associate artists with madmen, people you cannot collaborate with.

W tej rozmowie przyglądamy się raczej cechom, które ich różnią.

Czasem mówię, że projektant jest nie tylko artystą. Zwłaszcza rozmawiając z inwestorami, trzeba powiedzieć, że projektant artystą nie jest. Bo artyzm kojarzy im się z szaleńcem, który coś namaże na kartce i kurczowo trzyma się swoich koncepcji. To temat na inną rozmowę ‒ o tym, jak wyglądają u nas wzajemne relacje ze środowiskami artystycznymi, ze szkołami projektowymi i przemysłem, o tym, jak jedni o drugich mówią. W minionej epoce projektanci funkcjonowali na marginesie, w efekcie pozamykali się na uczelniach. Nie było komunikacji między nimi a przemysłem. Podczas studiów słyszałem, że przemysł nas nie rozumie ‒ my wiemy, jak powinno być, ale oni nie chcą słuchać. A znów w fabrykach uważa się, że projektant jest właściwie zbędny, że wymaga jakichś nierealnych rzeczy.

Z jednej strony mamy w Polsce wiodący przemysł meblarski, z drugiej ‒ młodych zdolnych projektantów. Ale ikony dizajnu czy choćby rozpoznawalne na świecie marki z tego związku się nie rodzą.

Na to potrzeba czasu, ale na pewno się to wydarzy. Na razie nasz przemysł produkuje dla cudzych marek. W głowach właścicieli polskich fabryk musi dojść do zwrotu mentalnego, by chcieli robić coś własnego.

Ale wszystko idzie właśnie w tym kierunku, sprzęga się ze zmianą pokoleniową w zarządach ‒ po prostu dzieci właścicieli inaczej myślą o biznesie. Widzą potrzebę komunikacji z projektantami i jest na nią szansa. Bo przecież mamy wspólny cel.

Produkt?

Dla producenta to produkt, który będzie się dobrze sprzedawać. Ale udział w sukcesie rynkowym to również nagroda dla projektanta.

Dla mnie to bardzo ważne, że współtworzę markę. Staram się być jej częścią. Nie zmywam się zaraz po wdrożeniu. Jeśli trzeba coś zmienić, pracujemy dalej, chociaż kontrakt już tego nie obejmuje.

Z punktu widzenia projektanta najważniejszym celem jest, by produkt był wartościowy, rozwiązywał jakiś problem formalny, technologiczny, robił choćby pół kroku do przodu w danej dziedzinie. To może być optymalizacja produkcji ze względu na ekologię czy optymalizacja ceny albo po prostu piękna forma, która wpłynie na sprzedaż. Dla mnie to bardzo ważne, że „Oyster” stał się bestsellerem. Generuje sprzedaż, z którą firma nigdy wcześniej nie miała do czynienia.

Co radziłbyś młodym projektantom? Jak skutecznie wejść w ten system?

Właśnie po to powstała moja wystawa „Projektowanie ‒ kulisy”, którą przygotowałem na targi Warsaw Home Expo. Totalnie się w niej odsłaniam, jeśli chodzi o sposób pracy. Uważam, że ta wiedza jest potrzebna i producentom, i projektantom, i szerokiej publiczności, żeby zmienić trochę sposób myślenia o tej branży. Na wystawie widać, ile czasu spędzam w pracowni. Usłyszałem już nawet od kogoś, że przeze mnie inni projektanci będą mieli trudniej, bo już nie wystarczą szkice czy wizualizacje, jak do tej pory. Ryzykuję więc, że rozzłoszczę środowisko, nie będę lubiany. Ale młodzi zobaczą, że istnieje inna droga do sukcesu, tylko trzeba zakasać rękawy – powinni przede wszystkim budować zaufanie, pokazać, że są oddani swojej pracy, że nie wybierają drogi na skróty. Ta wystawa może też pokazać wielu producentom, dlaczego pewne plany im nie wyszły i jakie błędy popełnili w pracy z projektantami.

In this interview, we try to focus on the things that distinguish designers from other artists.

I sometimes say that a designer is not only an artist. Especially when he talks to investors, who associate artists with madmen, who will scribble something on a piece of paper and hang on tightly to their concepts.

This is a broad subject for a different conversation: what is our relationship with the artistic milieu, with design schools and with the industry, what do we say about each other. In the past, designers used to be marginalized and as a result, they shut themselves in colleges. There was no contact whatsoever between them and the industry. When I was studying, I kept hearing that the industry did not understand us: we know how it should look like, but they do not want to hear that. On the other hand, companies and factories believe that designers are unnecessary and that their demands are completely unrealistic.

We have a great furniture industry in Poland, as well as many talented designers. And yet no design icons or brands well-known across the world are born from this union.

This demands time, but I am sure it will finally happen. For now, our industry mostly works for foreign brands. The owners of Polish factories need to change their mentality and decide to do something on their own. Everything is going in that direction. At the same time, a generation change is taking place in boards of companies, the owners’ children have a different way of thinking about business. They understand that it is necessary to communicate with designers. After all, we have the same goal.

The product?

The producer’s goal is a product that would be selling well. But participating in such a commercial success is also important for the designer.

For me, it is crucial to co-create a brand. I try to be its inherent part. I do not disappear right after the product goes into production. If something needs to be changed, we keep working, although our contract does not require that from us. From the designer’s point of view, the most important goal is to create a valuable product that solves a formal or technological problem, or turns out to be an important step in the right direction. It could optimize production in an eco-friendly manner, optimize prices or just be a beautiful form that will positively influence sales.

From my point of view, it is very important for “Oyster” to be a bestseller.

What is your advice for young designers? How to effectively become part of this system?

This is why I created the exhibition “Designing: behind the scenes” for the Warsaw Home Expo. I completely expose myself as far as work methods are concerned. I believe that this knowledge can be useful to producers, designers and the public, as it can change the way we think about this industry. The exhibition shows how much time I spend in my studio. I even heard someone say that because of me it would be more difficult for everyone else, as sketches and visualizations would not be sufficient anymore. I am taking a risk: it is possible that I will antagonize the milieu and come in for harsh criticism. But at the same time, young people will find out that they have a chance to be a success, they only have to pitch up and work hard, build trust and confidence, prove that they are devoted to their work, and willing to avoid shortcuts. This exhibition can also show many producers why some plans had not worked and what mistakes they had made while collaborating with designers. dizajn

W ten sposób realizujesz swoją misję?

To moja praca u podstaw. Gdy rozmawiam z ludźmi z różnych środowisk, widzę, że każdy, kto coś osiągnął, też chce coś z siebie dać.

Twój fotel „Mesh” zrealizowany z firmą MDD zdobył w tym roku iF Design Award, jedną z bardziej cenionych nagród na świecie. Wybrano go z tysięcy zgłoszonych projektów. Dlaczego?

Już podczas studiów w RCA myślałem o zaprojektowaniu wysokiego mebla do siedzenia, który dawałby możliwość wyizolowania się z otoczenia. Chodzi o efekt psychologiczny, pewien komfort schowania się. To było balansowanie na cienkiej granicy, za którą ta izolacja zamieniałaby się w dyskomfort, bo jest zbyt głęboko, zbyt ciasno. Eksperymentowałem też z materiałem, bo użyłem siatki 3D rozpiętej na stalowej ramie. Ona daje lekkość, a także stabilne oparcie i możliwość osłony. W „Meshu” zmaterializowało się też moje poszukiwanie różnorodności i zmiany w obrębie tej samej linii technologicznej, o których wspominałem już przy „Oysterze”. „Mesh” może mieć różne wysokości i kształty oparć, mało tego ‒ tworzy nawet kolekcję: fotele i sofę.

Dla MDD zrobiłeś także fotel „Ultra”, który trafił właśnie do finału konkursu Dobry Wzór.

I to mimo że wcale nie został zgłoszony przez producenta, lecz wytypowany przez niezależne grono ekspertów. To fotel kubełkowy, jakich bardzo wiele na rynku, ale on wygrywa oryginalnością. Ma rzeźbiarsko wyprofilowane siedzisko i małą poduszkę, której przeznaczenie – choć ona sama zaskakuje formą i usytuowaniem ‒ jest jasne. „Ultra” to oryginał, ale nie dziwak. Ma w sobie elegancję czy też powściągliwość formy ‒ choć akurat oba te określenia można stosować wymiennie.

Jednak żaden z tych mebli nie pozwolił ci chyba na dotarcie do tak szerokiej publiczności jak sekretarzyk „Bureau” zaprojektowany dla Ikei.

Tyle już o nim powiedziałem, że w jakiś sposób stał się dla mnie mniej ważny. Ikea to z całą pewnością istotny punkt odniesienia, bo każdy ją zna.

Moim celem jest praca z polskimi producentami, która pozwoli im osiągnąć rozpoznawalność. Widzę swoją rolę w art directingu, czyli współpracy z działem marketingu, doradztwie w zakresie promowania projektów. Dizajner ze swoim wyczuciem, znajomością rynku i dużym zaangażowaniem w projekt ma kompetencje, żeby to robić. Ja taką współpracę rozpocząłem z MDD. Doradziłem im, żeby nie promowali projektów poprzez wizualizacje, które są schematyczne i większość mebli nie wygląda na nich dobrze.

Postawiliśmy na zdjęcia w oryginalnie zaaranżowanych wnętrzach.

I znów: oznacza to więcej pracy, bo trzeba zrobić sesję, poszukać kreatywnych ludzi, fotografów, stylistów ‒ rosną koszty. Ale powstaje atrakcyjny materiał, który zaczyna żyć i przynosić efekt. Trafia do czasopism, na okładki, ludzie chcą go pokazywać. Efekt widać w całej sieci sprzedaży.

Daleko odbiegliśmy od szkicownika projektanta.

Ale to jest potrzebne, jeśli projekty mają się stawać ikonami. Uczestnictwo w życiu produktu przynosi korzyści oraz kształtuje też jakąś więź z projektantem, wzmacnia jego rolę, buduje zaufanie. Im większe zaufanie do projektanta, tym większa jego wolność twórcza. I większe szanse na przekonanie do swoich racji w niestandardowych rozwiązaniach, które wprowadzają to twórcze podrażnienie. Bo nawet jeśli producent nie w pełni je rozumie, to projektantowi, któremu ufa, da zielone światło.

Participating in the life of a product is beneficial and shapes a relationship with the designer, reinforces his part and builds trust. The more you trust a designer, the more creative freedom he gets.

Do you consider this to be your mission?

This is my work at the grass roots. When I talk to people representing various fields and milieus, I see that everyone who has achieved something is willing to give back.

Your armchair “Mesh”, created in cooperation with MDD, received this year’s iF Design Award, one of the most valued awards in the world. It was selected among thousands of other projects. Why? During my studies at RCA, I was thinking about designing a high piece of furniture that would enable you to isolate yourself from your surroundings. It is a psychological effect, a certain comfort linked with hiding from the world. It was a thin line between isolation and discomfort, as this chair could turn out to be too deep or take too much of the user’s space. I also experimented with materials: I used a 3D net stretched on a steel frame.

It provides lightness, a stable backrest and the possibility of getting cover.

“Mesh” is a materialization of my search for diversity and change in the same technological line as the “Oyster”. “Mesh” comes in various heights and shapes, it is also part of a collection consisting of armchairs and a sofa.

You have also designed the armchair “Ultra” for MDD: it has now reached the final of the “Good Design” competition.

This is true. It happened, even though the chair, instead of being submitted by the producer, was selected by an independent group of experts. It is a bucket chair. There are lots of such items on the market nowadays, but this one is really original. It has a sculpted seat and a small cushion in a surprising shape. “Ultra” is original, but not odd. It is elegant and reserved No piece of furniture has allowed you to appeal to the taste of such a wide range of users as the “Bureau”, designed for Ikea.

I have said so much about this project that it somehow became less important to me. Ikea is certainly an important point of reference, as everyone knows the brand. My goal is to work with Polish producers and help them gain recognition. I see an important part for myself in art directing, which is a form of cooperation with marketing departments, consulting and promoting projects. A designer, with his intuition, knowledge of the market and involvement in the project, can do this very effectively. I started such a collaboration with MDD. I advised them not to promote their projects through visualizations, as they are schematic and conventional, and make most pieces of furniture look worse than in reality. We decided to use photographs made in originally designed interiors. Such a project involves much more work, because you need to organize a photoshoot, find creative people, photographers and stylists. The costs are higher, but good material comes into being and starts to have a life of its own, produce specific results. It finds its way to magazines and covers, people want to show it. It really affects the sales.

This seems quite different from a designer’s sketchbook.

But it is also necessary, if projects are to become icons. Participating in the life of a product is beneficial and shapes a relationship with the designer, reinforces his part and builds trust. The more you trust a designer, the more creative freedom he gets and the higher chances he has to win others over, convince them to use out-of-the-box solutions. Even if the producer does not fully understand them, he will give the green light to the designer. design
