Halloween is a fun affair for the whole family here.

PAINT THE TOWN RED: In February, the Kennebunks light up red for love. For visitors, that means special romance packages at our inns and hotels, romantic dinners in our restaurants, red tag specials in our shops and more.

MEMORIAL DAY: On the holiday itself, Kennebunkport begins its parade at 9 a.m., followed by a shorter version in Cape Porpoise afterward. At 2 p.m., the Kennebunk parade steps off through downtown. Arundel honors it veterans at a morning service at its municipal offices.

Walker s Point ’

The summer home of the Bush family, Walker’s Point has been visited by presidents, foreign heads of state and celebrities over the years.

For generations, though, it’s the Bush family themselves who have been the draw here. While the late George H.W. and Barbara Bush were much-beloved members of the community for many years, today you’re just as likely to find George W. and wife Laura, or their daughters Jenna and Barbara spending time at the compound, along with other family members.

Walker’s Point is not open to the public , but you can drive by or stop briefly at the scenic parking

overlook to snap a quick picture. Vehicles may only stop in the designated parking area; stopping on the road is not permitted.

To get to Walker’s Point, take Ocean Avenue from Dock Square for approximately two miles. The ride is beautiful in and of itself, with the Atlantic crashing against the rocks along the right side of the road.

Just before you reach Walker’s Point you’ll see the special overlook spot (please obey the rules posted on the sign) on the right. Also overlooking the house and on the right is the Anchor to Windward, the town’s special tribute to “41” installed in 2009.

Local Beaches

Maine has more than 5,000 miles of coastline, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the entire state can be found here in the Kennebunks. Whether you’re a family looking to set up for that perfectly relaxing day at the beach or a surfer hoping to catch the ultimate wave, the beaches in Kennebunk and Kennebunkport offer some of the best fun in the sun.

Kennebunk Beach: Mother’s, Middle & Gooch’s (Beach Avenue)

These long, wide sandy beaches (and even rocky Middle Beach) are the perfect place to walk, sun yourself, play in the surf, look for sea treasures or just enjoy the sight of the waves rolling onto shore. There are lifeguards and porta-potties at both Gooch’s Beach and Mother’s Beach from July through Labor Day. Mother’s Beach will have a new playground open to the public. While visitors are welcome at these beaches, a permit to park at the beach is required. Non-resident daily ($30), weekly ($100) and seasonal ($200) passes are available at three kiosks, via PassPortParking mobile app, and at the Kennebunk Town Hall. Local Beaches

Goose Rocks Beach (King’s Highway, off Route 9)

At three miles long, Goose Rocks Beach is a favorite with walkers as well as the sand pail set. The beach is wide, smooth, sandy and affords wonderful views of Timber Island, just off the coast. Parking permits are required ($40/$200/$325; note that Kennebunk permits cannot be used here) and are available at Town Hall and at the kiosk in front of Goose Rocks General Store; there is also a ticket kiosk at the corner of Proctor and King’s Highway. Colony Beach (off Ocean Avenue in Kennebunkport) The parking lot for this beautiful beach is closed for the season.

Accessibility Options: Both beach wheelchairs and floats are available for rent for a small fee in Kennebunk and Kennebunkport. To rent one, contact Kennebunk Recreation (207) 604-1335 or Kennebunkport Parks & Recreation (207) 967-4304. Mother’s Beach in Kennebunk has an ADA-compliant Mobi-Mat. The woven polyester mat helps those with mobility issues access the beach more easily.

1) Do some shopping! Kennebunk’s Main Street has several shops, such as Kennebunk Toy Co., or head down to Dock Square for retro toys at Daytrip Junior and games at Island Treasure Toys in the Attic.

2) Check out some wheels! An afternoon exploring the Motorland Maine Classic Car Museum’s astounding collection of cars from all decades will certainly hit the spot.

3) Catch a show! There are plenty of kid-friendly shows around, with offerings at the Ogunquit Playhouse, City Theater in Biddeford and Vinegar Hill Music Theatre in Arundel.

4) Hop on a trolley! The Seashore Trolley Museum offers a covered trolley ride into the woods and back. Kids of all ages love it here!

5) Drop into The Creative Soul and pick a painting project! The kids can take home their own work of art.

You’ve got three hours to “experience the Kennebunks,” so what do you do? Here’s our favorite three-hour tour. Drive along Beach Avenue from Cooper’s Corner and take in the Kennebunk beaches, Gooch’s, Middle and Mother’s. Feeling adventurous? Park (legally) and get out and sink your toes into the sand, or take a swing at the playground on Mother’s Beach. Then, dust off the sand, head back to the car and loop around in front of KBIA and drive back to Lower Village/Dock Square. (You can take in much the same sights – with narration! – on a 45-minute Intown Trolley tour.) Grab a lobster roll to go (every eatery makes one!), and a whoopie pie. Nothing says “taste of Maine” like those two. If you’re feeling adventurous, wash it down with a bottle of Moxie. WANT THE REST? Scan code above!

Biking / Hiking

Ocean Avenue and Cape Porpoise, Kennebunkport (8 miles): Head out of Dock Square on Ocean Avenue with the water on your right. You will be riding parallel to the Kennebunk River. Ocean Avenue is heavily traveled so families with young children may want to take another route. Bear right at the fire station and stay on Wildes District Road all the way into Cape Porpoise. When you have had your fill of lobster, hop on your bike and backtrack your route into town.

Goose Rocks Beach, Kennebunkport (11 miles): From Dock Square take North Street to Arundel Road. Follow Arundel Road past the horse farm and take a right onto Goose Rocks Road. Ride Goose Rocks Road to the end and go straight across Route 9. At the end of Dyke Road you will find the pristine Goose Rocks Beach. This ideal family destination usually has very limited parking, but you won’t have that problem with a bike. When it’s time to return, follow the same roads back to town.

Kennebunk Beach, Kennebunk (7 miles): From Dock Square go over the bridge to the traffic light and take a left onto Beach Avenue. Kennebunk Beach is now straight ahead about 1 mile. Follow

the ocean for the next 2 miles. Where the road heads away from the ocean you will see Great Hill Road on the left. This road dead-ends at the Mousam River.

After you turn around, go back to Middle Beach and take a left onto Boothby Road. This connects to Route 9 and will bring you back into the Port. This ride is good for adults and parents with children over 9 years old.

Bridle Path, Kennebunk (2 miles): Flat dirt path that parallels the Mousam River and the marshes in Kennebunk. This is an excellent ride for beginners and families. Park at Sea Road School on Sea Road for access.

Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, Gravelly Brook Road: Trails vary in length, width, topography and use. Some are conducive to bird watching and viewing wildlife, others for hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. kport trust.org.

Kennebunk Land Trust: Whether you frequent the Oxbow Preserve’s easy trail with serene river views, prefer a longer trek to the pond at Alewive Woods, or like a peaceful walk among the open fields at For All Forever, you will find KLT’s preserves

Biking / Hiking

are wonderful places to connect with nature! The trust is a membershippowered nonprofit that has protected over 3,400 acres of land and offers scenic trails that are beautiful in all seasons. kennebunklandtrust.org

Trails of Hope Woods (2 miles)

Hope Woods, a 72-acre parcel in downtown Kennebunk permanently conserved through a collaboration with Kennebunk Land Trust, features a series of trails and is open year-round from dawn to dusk. An .8 mile Universally Accessible Trail is complete with ADA-compliant parking available at the trailhead when Hope Cemetery is open (April 1-Nov. 30). The trail map can be downloaded from hopecemeterykennebunk.com/woods.

Welch Woods, Arundel (.5 miles)

A beautiful, gentle loop through a peaceful forest with lovely ferns along the way. Trail crosses a small brook and leads to a clearing by the shore of the Kennebunk River. Rest a while on one of the benches and enjoy the serenity of the tidal marsh, and the gentle flow of the river. Small off-road parking located just east of 227 River Road, Arundel.

Community Trails property at 257 Limerick Road is .3 miles long boasting 60 features. The flow trail, which is the first and only of its kind in southern Maine, is a local favorite of bike enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels.

Eastern Trail (65 miles):

The Eastern Trail, a section of the East Coast Greenway stretching from Kittery to South Portland, has two entrances: Kennebunk Elementary School off Alewive Road, and Limerick Road in Arundel. The trail is perfect for walking and cycling as well as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The trail, which is approximately 10 feet wide, is also dog-friendly. easterntrail.org.

Life on the Water

The beaches in the Kennebunks have the perfect balance: not too hot, not too crowded, with just the right hint of ocean breeze.

And while a day spent lying on the sand, watching the waves, can be perfection in and of itself, getting out ONTO the water can be pretty spectacular, too.

Rent a kayak and tour the hidden inlets on shore, or test your endurance with standup paddle boarding or surfing. Try your hand

at deep sea fishing or go out on a real lobster boat and learn how to pull a trap in.

You can enjoy a smooth sunset sail with a bottle of wine, or take a rollicking ride over the waves on a speed boat.

And here in the Kennebunks you’ll find the only whale watch tours between Portsmouth and Portland, where you can take in the majesty of whales breaching out at sea.

Dogs

In the Kennebunks, pups have room to run on our sandy beaches!

In Maine, we love our dogs, and many establishments welcome them. There are dog-friendly inns and eateries, dog parks and, of course, opportunities to enjoy the beautiful beaches with your four-legged friends.

KENNEBUNKPORT

Dogs are allowed at all Kennebunkport beaches (Goose Rocks, Colony and Cleaves Cove) before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. June 15 through Labor Day, and all day the rest of the year. This does not apply to service dogs. From Sept. 16-March 31, dogs are permitted off-leash if under voice and sight control, except from noon to 6 p.m., when they must remain on leash. All dogs must be kept at least 200 feet from bird nesting areas.

ARUNDEL

Dogs are permitted on the Eastern Trail, but must be kept on leash during certain sections.

KENNEBUNK

Dogs are allowed on the beach all day long from the day after Labor Day to June 14. From June 15 through Labor Day, dogs are allowed on the beach before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. Dogs must be under voice control or on leash; every owner must have a leash on them.

• A fenced-in dog park is available on Sea Road, next to the recycling center, in Kennebunk. It is free and open to the public year-round.

• Dogs are permitted on the Eastern Trail in Kennebunk, but must be kept on leash during certain sections. Owners must pick up and remove dog waste.

Per law (and courtesy) owners MUST pick up after their pups!

Our area offers easy access to worldclass healthcare. The Maine Health system has a hospital in Biddeford, another in Sanford, the main facility in Portland and various diagnostic labs and offices right in Kennebunk, including a walk-in clinic.

New England Cancer Specialists, right in Kennebunk, offer care close to home and enjoy a partnership with DanaFarber Cancer Institute in Boston. The Kennebunks also have various senior living options, from apartments all the way up to skilled nursing facilities, and Hospice of

Southern Maine offers compassionate end of life care.

Our two libraries – Kennebunk Free Library and the Louis T. Graves Public Library – serve the community in a number of ways including programming, as do our museums and numerous churches.

Living Here

Here in the Kennebunks, we’re also blessed with great schools no matter which town you live in.

The schools of RSU 21 (covering Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Arundel) are among the finest in the state. In fact, in 2023, Kennebunk High School was named the number two high school in Maine by U.S. News and World Report, and our middle school (Middle School of the Kennebunks) was 12th.

As an added bonus, the Middle School of the Kennebunks and Kennebunk High School are International Baccalaureate schools, valued by colleges in the U.S. and abroad.

Just up the road in Saco you’ll find Thornton Academy, an independent, private day and boarding school for students in grades 6-12. Students living in Arundel have school choice and can attend either RSU 21, Biddeford or Thornton for middle and high school. Other students can attend through tuition.

Thornton boasts students from 30 local towns and 50 countries.

The Kennebunks are also fortunate to have York County Community College nearby in Wells, as well as the University of New England (UNE) in Biddeford. Both offer wonderful opportunities for higher learning.

History

White Columns, Kennebunkport

White Columns in the heart of Kennebunkport offers visitors a chance to tour an 1853 Greek Revival home and view exhibitions covering two centuries of local history, from sea captains to presidents.

Guided tours present stories and artifacts from the lives of Charles and Celia Perkins, whose fortunes were connected to the thriving shipbuilding era of Kennebunkport. The museum also features sea captains and shipbuilders to rusticators to Kennebunkport’s most famous summer resident, late President George H.W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush and their family. There is also a museum store with a selection of maritime history collectibles, presidential memorabilia, and unique Kennebunkport treasures.

Arundel history

In the mid-1600s, Arundel’s first settlers kept close to the coastline both for easy access to the ocean and to escape from local Native Americans. The settlers finally abandoned the settlement in the late 1600s and did not return until around 1720 when relations with Native Americans improved.

The new settlement, named Arundel, grew along the Kennebunk River. After 1750, people began to settle west of what is now Route 1 and started farming the rest of Arundel. Around 1800, as the religious climate changed, small churches and meeting houses served to draw the local people together. Although those small churches have disappeared, several of the early farms and a few of the farmhouses still exist today.

When Arundel’s secession from Kennebunkport became official in 1916, it lost its direct connection with the coast and remained a rural town composed primarily of farms.

Today, Arundel is one of the fastest-growing towns in the state, and is home to both industry and local businesses, while maintaining much of its rural character.

History

Brick Store Museum, Kennebunk Brick Store Museum, Kennebunk: In 1936, in the middle of the Great Depression, Edith Cleaves Barry opened the Brick Store Museum on Main Street in Kennebunk. This town was recognized nationally for its shipbuilding prowess in the 19th century, and by the early 20th century it turned into a nationwide tourist and artist mecca. Though the town preserved its small-town charm, it consistently spearheaded trends on a national level. Edith Barry inherited a brick general store building, built in 1825, from her uncle, William Barry, in the early 1930s, and knew immediately that she would open a museum dedicated to the story of this area. When the Brick Store

Museum opened in 1936, it became one of only 10 museums in the entire country to open between the Great Depression and World War II. Edith Barry funded the museum with her own money and invested her time and hard work for the rest of her life. The Museum absorbed four other buildings on the block, all built between 1810 and 1860, to house its collection of over 70,000 artifacts relating to the culture of the Kennebunks.

Today, the museum is open six days a week, offering exhibitions, tours, research and programs yearround. Admission is $5 per person, free for 16 and under. For information, visit www.brickstoremuseum. org, or call (207) 985-4802.
