Laura Dolce Executive Director Kennebunk Kennebunkport Arundel Chamber of Commerce Diners will enjoy the great outdoors (inside or outside!) at The Lost Fire in Cape Porpoise. Cover photo by CA Smith Photography

In 2020, when so much of the world shut down, our eateries stepped up and found new ways to help us have our favorite daily cup of coffee, fresh bread, creative cocktails and gourmet meals to celebrate life’s milestones.

• Eating out/in or doing takeout as often as possible.

While an enterprising few began to offer delivery, almost every single food business - from our coffee shops to fivestar restaurants - found a way to offer takeout. “Curbside pickup” became an oft-used part of our vernacular as we learned to call ahead, stay in our cars and have deliciousness brought right to our vehicle doors.

• Having patience with changes - and there are many - to be navigated. That includes complying if asked to mask, distance or more.

At the same time, tents, patios and decks popped up, as eating “out” became in. More and more people preferred to enjoy a meal outdoors, and restaurants were able to keep more people employed and capacity numbers a little higher by utilizing outdoor spaces. We’re seeing that trend continue this year (and we suspect it won’t go away anytime soon), meaning that there are even more ways to enjoy a meal and the great outdoors in the Kennebunks. But as flexible and enterprising as our eateries have been, make no mistake: They are still recovering. While things like PPP loans have helped them stay afloat, they are still far away from being on solid ground. And so this year, like last, I ask that you help support our eateries by:

• Tipping the staff whether or not you’re eating “in.” This has been a very tough time for them, too.

• Buying gift certificates as gifts, or for future visits. • Enjoying all the new ways - patios, decks, tents, takeout, delivery - that we have to enjoy food in this area. • Remembering that things still won’t be back to “normal” this year, and eateries are no exception. • Understanding that what we, as a community, do this year will impact which eateries are here for us next year. To help all of this along, we hope you’ll join us in celebrating Eat the Kennebunks Week from May 10-16. During this week eateries will offer special meals, deals and more, and our new Loyal to Local passports will help you win prizes. On Saturday, May 15, we’ll host our second annual Community Picnic Night. Look for more details at EattheKennebunks.com. So eat out, eat often and eat the Kennebunks this year!

in the Kennebunks, we had tents outside of the Hurricane and Alisson’s, new decks at Mike’s All Day Breakfast and a new patio at Bandaloop, among other things. Owners had found ways to adapt and customers were loving them.

“When the state of Maine decided to open outdoor seating for restaurants, we did the pavement out back and then we rented a massive tent,” said German Lucarelli, chef owner of The Lost Fire in Cape Porpoise. “It was a huge success, but took a lot of parking spaces so we decided to build LUCA,

The Lost Fire patio, which became a success immediately.” The same was true at Old Vines Wine Bar in Lower Village.

“It didn’t take long to see that we needed to move most of the operation outside,” said Jon Ellms, one of the owners. “It took a village: Rick’s (partner Rick Taranto) design eye and event management, James’ (partner James Warwick) operational expertise and handyman skills, and my background in staging trade show exhibits came in handy.”

Outdoor dining is where it’s at this year Continued from Page 5 The solution? “(It was) comprised of tents and our existing pergola and we used old pallets to create plant walls between tables,” said Warwick. “This, with creative lighting, created a space that looked more like a music festival tent than a dining room.” And that village Ellms mentioned kept it all together.

“The folks at Snug Harbor graciously provided the plants, and kept them in good shape up all summer,” Ellms said. “The Event Light Pros were helpful with indoor lighting. Joel Gurecki jumped when we needed to get power, Wifi, and sound all set. One of our

customers, Teri Collard, volunteered to keep up some of the flowers in the giant planters by the entrance.” Up the road in Arundel, the owners of Bandaloop, which had recently moved from Kennebunkport and opened in a beautifully restored historic tavern, were discovering that it wasn’t their inside that was the draw. “Outdoor dining was essential to our survival this year,” said Bridget Lee, co-owner with her husband, Scott, of Bandaloop. “Even as the weather got very cold, folks still wanted to eat outside. There are still people who won’t dine inside, but seem to be plenty that are okay with

Outdoor dining is where it’s at this year Continued from Page 28 it. Thankfully. We weren’t set up for outdoor dining yet, so we had to scramble and get it all in order pretty quickly.” The resulting patio, with bright orange umbrellas, became a striking counterpoint to the restaurant’s dark wood exterior - and was popular deep into fall. Lee said they have even more plans for this year, including expanding their outdoor seating. Some restaurants had no outdoor dining at all before the pandemic — or any space to put any. But with town officials actively working to ease restrictions and create new opportunities, new spots sprang up. “We had an outdoor dining tent in the town parking lot behind our building, right on the water, from June through Columbus Day,” said Ashley Padget, general manager of her family-owned restaurant, Alisson’s. Padget worked with Kennebunkport Town Manager Laurie Smith on creating new opportunities for all eateries - and on the dining space she shared with Hurricane. Padget said the Kennebunkport Resort Collection was also a generous neighbor. “The KRC also collaborated with us, giving us use of the Kennebunkport Inn parking lot and patio for outdoor dining as well,” she said. “As soon as we were allowed to resume indoor dining we did, even with a limited seating capacity. We continue with both indoor dining and curbside takeout.” Outside seating, though, wasn’t 30 | eatthekennebunks.com

The Nonantum Resort had dining cabanas, Stripers at the Breakwater Inn had igloos as well and Batson River Brewing had the incredibly popular fish shacks on its deck.

it all done for their customers.

“In Kennebunk we have seen lots of outdoor dining even through the cold winter days in our heated fish shacks,” said food and beverage director Amy Caramante. “We also brought outdoor heaters onto our deck so people could be cozy while dining outside.”

Lucarelli said he hadn’t given much thought to outdoor eating before 2020, but that he has a new vision going into this year.

And as for this year, most eateries say they plan to offer more of the same — takeout, dining in AND dining out. This time around, they are more confident that they can get

“We have learned so much about rolling with the punches, working as a team, and finding solutions instead of focusing on problems,” Alisson’s Padget said. “I know that sounds kind of contrived, but it is true. Our employees were rock stars! We were also forced to streamline many of our business practices. It was a blessing.”

“This year we are renovating and updating LUCA to bring more to our valued customers,” he said. Other changes include adding two ADAcompliant bathrooms for that space, with a plan to open it Memorial Day weekend. The rest we’ll leave to good weather.”
