We had a number of activities lined up which included the Chairman’s dinner, the WASPA Bi-monthly meeting, tree planting at Nyalenda Oxidation Ponds and plant visit at the Dunga treatment plant plus a site visit to Kit Mikayi a local tourist site in Seme .

Mr. Odongo, while making his remarks, reminisced that for a long time he had a tough task of convincing commercial banks that KIWASCO cannot provide its assets as security for acquiring loans as the pipes which are the Company’s main assets are under ground.

He was however, relieved that banks have realized their mistake and have so far changed their stance.

Currently, the banks are assessing revenue collected

Mr. Orimba, on the other hand applauded water companies for ending over-reliance on grants and changing focus to commercial financing. This, he said is the best approach as it’s sustainable and bestows the WSPs responsibilities to ensure they continuously generate revenues that will be used partly for loan re-payment. He reminded the MD’s present that access to water is a basic right .

The Governor, in his speech, congratulated Mr. Orimba for being voted the super CECM in the 47 Counties. Through his tenure as the CECM in charge of Water, Environment, Climate Change & Natural Resources, Mr. Orimba has seen the County Government of Kisumu attain strategic partnerships 5

with development partners that has eventually resulted to improved water service delivery in Kisumu County. Prof. Nyong’o encouraged water service providers to continue working with development partners in order to achieve even greater Accomplishments .He reinforced to the attendees the key role they play in the Country’s economy and urged them to strengthen WASPA association for long-term benefits.

ERP SYSTEM IMPLEMENTATION I can’t forget July 2019 when Chairman of the Board of Directors Mr. Vinod Patel pressed the big button to mark the start of our ERP implementation journey in KIWASCO. This was a project which I had anticipated for so long because it would be a game-changer for the company. We had started our journey of digitization but this would revolutionize our mode of operations.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is a system of integrated software applications that was aimed at standardizing, streamlining, and integrating business processes throughout the company, that meant that all processes including water production, water distribution, commercial services, customer relationship, finance, supply chain and human resources would be linked and Mr. Shem Otieno ICT Manager - Kiwasco be able to communicate to one another.

ERP system was meant for the business to gain visibility, increase productivity and operational efficiency, reduce costs and enhance competitiveness in the water sector. Most importantly, the system is meant to enhance decision making using available and credible data that could be generated at the touch of a button and also be able to share that data with ease.

Following the successful implementation, KIWASCO joins the list of pioneers in the Water Service Providers (WSPs) in Kenya to implement the ERP system.

In answering to the changing customer needs and the fluctuating business environment, the company implemented a robust smart billing system called Ufanisi and Microsoft Dynamic Business Central 365.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, staff could easily work from anywhere and supervision would still be done effectively.

Hence it enabled business continuity in all areas. This was a time that only those who had embraced technology in their business survived. I can say that the project was opportune as it came just at the right time.

I have worked in several units during my time in KIWASCO and although I am satisfied here at the Intake, I still think that I need to move higher in order to encounter more challenges and grow the company. It is a good practice to work in different sections so that one gets to know the challenges other people experience. For instance, the changes I have brought to Dunga Intake have shocked many of the staff members who come to visit the station. I accepted the transfer with a positive mind, and this has resulted to the many changes that have taken place. In the process, I have received numerous support from the senior managers and the Managing Director.

All employers are looking for productive staff. The question everyone needs to ask themselves is, ‘Am I adding value to the company or killing the company?

I know that so many of my colleagues fear retirement because they do not plan so I encourage you to start preparing for retirement early. Currently, I have 8 more years to retirement and I can comfortably say that I am ready for it because; I love home and home activities. My love for farming makes me have the strength to go into retirement.

Some of the things that makes me proud to be part of Kiwasco include; having a robust Corporate Social Responsibility through tree planting and cleaning rivers, subscribing to WASCO games, good ratings by the regulator WASREB, I also love the fact that the Managing Director relates well with staff and that gives staff confidence.

KIWASCO is slowly becoming a first-class company and we all need to move forward as a team. I am a proud staff of KIWASCO, having seen the company grow to where it is today.

POWER OF SERVICE IN CUSTOMER RETENTION For many, the expression “it’s the little things that matter”, may not really mean much until they interact with a customer service provider. Every aspect of business has a certain level of service attached to it.

Most of us have received poor service at some point. There is one pertinent issue that most companies tend to overlook: customer retention.

Most times, we forget the value of customers and assume they are going nowhere. Never assume that a customer knows how you do business and skip explaining products or services.

There is the beauty of remembering a customer by name and what their preferences are, but there is also more beauty in treating a repeat customer as though they were buying from you for the first time.

Customers love to feel valued and appreciated.

Aim at reducing the defection rate by measuring customer satisfaction regularly. Measuring satisfaction helps an organization to know areas of improvement.

Create a plan in line with the organizational vision as well as what is best for the customer.

Know your customers and what their specific needs are, work on reducing staff turnover and benchmark activities with a chosen organization.

Measuring satisfaction will not only help an organization to work on their weak areas but also build long-term relationships with customers. Most times organizations wrongly assume that they will meet a customer’s expectation and get a surprise feedback.

Knowing and understanding your customer eliminates such risks. Remember, this year’s Customer Service Week was themed ‘The power of Service’.

Use feedback to plan on staff training and rotation as well as systems upgrade. Covid-19 has forced most companies to offer online services that require efficient and reliable technology to attain high levels of standards.
