THE KIWANIS MISSION

THE KIWANIS VISION

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time.

Kiwanis will be a positive influence in communities worldwide — so that one day, all children will wake up in communities that believe in them, nurture them and provide the support they need to thrive.

THE KIWANIS MOTTO Serving the children of the world.

To give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than to the material values of life. To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships. To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards. To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship. To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities. To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and goodwill.

LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE

Desmond Batchelor

Lieutenant Governor 2023-2024 Division 23 Central

Happy New Kiwanis Year 2023-2024 and I look forward to a productive and exciting time together as your Lieutenant Governor for this awesome Division 23 Central. The theme for this year is “Transforming the Lives of Children and Empowering Communities” in keeping with the Motto of Kiwanis International of “Serving the Children of the World” and also part of the 5th Object of Kiwanis International “to build better communities.” To be able to develop and execute impactful projects we will intensify our efforts to strengthen our membership by encouraging greater fellowships for a strong cohesive team and membership retention. A happy and united K Family will translate into more active Kiwanians to execute more meaningful projects. I urge our clubs to work closely with all our members and engage them as we strive to transform the lives of children and build communities. With great focus on children including our Service Leadership Programme (SLP) members in 2023-2024, we aim to execute projects and programmes to build character; improve self-esteem and foster self-confidence. The Division will encourage projects to address nutrition; education; health; mentorship and expand the Service Leadership Initiatives such as the Terrific Kids and Bring Up Grades Programmes in schools to include those without sponsored SLP clubs. As the Lieutenant Governor for administrative year 2023-2024, I look forward to your support to make this a great year in “serving the Children of the World”. Thank you and God bless our movement, our Division, all our clubs and membership.

JOINT PROJECT The Kiwanis Club of Friends Across Borders and Kiwanis Club of Emerging Leaders October 22, 2022

OBJECTIVE: The Rushworth Basic School caters to children ages 4 – 6 years. The Needs Assessment was done, matter presented and approved by the Board. The objective was to ‘Refurbish & Upgrade the School Plant’ to meet the Early Childhood Commission Standards for certification. The following needs were identified. Painting of walls, and murals; installation of wire fencing at the top of the front wall. Installation of partition for sick bay and principal’s office. Installation of back perimeter wall to provide greater levels of security for the children, planting of flowers and shrubs. Renovation of play area to include swings and a jungle-gym. These renovations would not only facilitate certification for the school under the Early Childhood Commission but provide a safe environment for the students as it reduces the possibility of run-throughs when persons are pursued by the police. The installation of a wall at the back of the school will ensure that rubbish is not dumped on the school compound by residents of the community and ensure the health and wellness of the students. The installation of a partition at the principal’s office facilitates privacy and security for the principal in her day-to-day activities. 20

The club’s focus was on Early Childhood Institutions, two Basic schools within the Olympic Gardens/Waterhouse Communities were identified. Institution number 1 Rushworth Basic School work commenced on Kiwanis One Day in October 2022. The activities on Kiwanis One Day resulted in Rushworth Basic School receiving certification from the Early Childhood Institution. Institution number 2 Miracle Tabernacle Basic School – refurbishing of the reading room, installation of new toilet facilities and repairs to the roof in order for the institution to attain the Early Childhood Commission approval. The project was a joint venture with the Jamaica Constabulary Force, the Jamaica Defence Force and community members. On Labour Day the activities included removal of rotten boards, painting, installation of new toilets. Work began at 7:00 a.m. on Labour Day with the dismantling of the roof, removal of the additional rotten boards and removal of the items from the space. SSP Francis from 119 responding to KCFAB call for assistance and support at the Miracle Learning Centre. Post-Labour Day activity - installation of washstand and face basins. Treatment of new boards and the entire premises by pest control company. ORKIN inspected the premises on May 30th. The cost of treatment is $67,835.37. Upon completion of these activities, it is expected that the Miracle Learning Center will receive certification from the Early Childhood Commission. These are two new SLP projects during the administrative year 2022-2023 which saw the involvement of all members of the club an increase of 90% over prior year activities by club members. Kiwanis Club of Young Professionals ST. ANDREW

BREAKFAST PROGRAMME Cockburn Gardens Primary

John F. Kennedy once said, “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other” and to empower the leaders of tomorrow, we made it our duty to ensure the foundation of a firm education was made concrete by serving nutritional and appetizing breakfasts on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Cockburn Gardens Primary School. The launch of the Kiwanis Club of Young Professionals, St. Andrew’s breakfast programme at the Cockburn Gardens Primary School took place on November 8, 2022, led by President Tena Turner-Thomas. This feeding programme, the club’s Signature Project, through out the Administrative Year 2022-2023 served a total of 180 students and produced over 5,800 meals. Thanks to charitable donations and notable sponsorship internally from our clubs’ Can Food Item Project, monthly donations from members and external donations from Foska Oats, National Supply Foundation which came on board through a staff November, 2023

member at the school, warm meals were prepared by the canteen’s cook staff with assistance from the helping hands of KYPSA club members, teachers and parents from the school. The traditional Jamaican breakfast menu included oats, cornmeal and hominy corn porridge, fritters, egg sandwiches, mackerel served with fried dumplings, crackers and Milo. Since the inception of our breakfast programme, reports have been received of improvements in attendance and early arrival, alertness and participation during classes. Children that sometimes came to school without eating, and/or where not certain when their next meal would be, where appreciative of the meals provided.

The Kiwanis Club of Stony Hill

KIWANIS KEEPING THE YOUTHS BRIGHT The Kiwanis Club of Stony Hill believes that the future of our nation depends on how we treat our young children. This organization is convinced that the education of our young is a route out of poverty. At the beginning of the school year based on our needs assessment we pledged to assist at least 15 students in 4 primary and infant schools with needed educational materials. Our Staff Advisors in each of our schools were requested to identify some of the neediest students and provide a list of their educational needs. These included textbooks, writing materials, uniforms and footwear. We sought assistance from corporate Jamaica and were happy to receive funding from the Jamaica Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Ltd. From these donations we were able to purchase some needed items. Club members also contributed cash and school materials. We partnered with the Allman Hill Methodist Church with donations of items including pencils, school bags, erasers and notebooks. The club expended over $90,000. Members of the Builders Club from the Allman Hill Primary assisted with putting the packages together and handing them to students in the Allman Hill Infant November, 2023

department. The staff and students were appreciative. A class teacher who recognised the impact of this project on at least one child reported that he was constantly remarking, “Miss I want book to do my work to, when me a go get book fe write ina.” His problems are resolved as he now has his own set of books. That’s impact. Kiwanis Club of Stony Hill is committed to assisting students with their educational needs. We aim to develop bright students by providing the necessary tools to keep the educational lights burning. The project continues with children in the primary schools.
