is going to be a banner year for the Kitsap Regional Library. In April, we will open a new library in Kingston as part of the Kingston Village Green Community Center. Located on West Kingston Road ( just a short walk from the current library location), this community center is envisioned to be a place where people will gather and connect.

This new library has been designed with the people of Kingston in mind, with nearly five times more space and six times more seating than the current library. Natural light through large windows will make the environment user-friendly for all. High ceilings and movable wall systems will give the library a sense of spaciousness. There will be separate children and teen spaces, with a special area for quiet study. Youth activities will focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning and there will be interactive

Prepare to enjoy what I believe will be the beginning of a new vision of what libraries can be in Kitsap County.

And speaking of a new libraries — the campaign for a new Central Kitsap library is rapidly gaining momentum. Already, Kitsap Regional Library has purchased 1.3 acres of land bordering an estuary on the corner of NW Bucklin Hill Road and Blaine Avenue to serve as the future home for this new library.

The 10,000-square-foot building will make a wonderful connection to the adjacent Clear Creek ecosystem;

 Energy efficient, green design that respects the location’s connection to the estuary.  Dedicated spaces for children and teens.  Flexible space for anything from quiet study to active learning.  Outdoor spaces for classes and events or just enjoying the natural surrounding.  Comfortable, plentiful seating to gather and read.  Community meeting space.  And plenty of parking.

Kitsap Regional Library will be proud to share both of these buildings with you. In the meantime, don’t forget about exploring our other locations. In 2016, you can also look forward to a renovated and refreshed Bainbridge Island location. Come and enjoy the Native American art at Little Boston. Bask in the glory of the art deco design at Downtown Bremerton. View the new outdoor art at Poulsbo. Research your family genealogy at Sylvan Way. Or pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the waterfront views at both our Manchester and Port Orchard locations. Teen Services Librarian Megan Carlin Powers Up Her Passion for Makerspaces

Serendipitous. That's how

Leigh Ann Winterowd, Branch Manager of Kitsap Regional Library, Sylvan Way, describes the arrival of Megan. In her short time at the Library, Megan has made a huge impact. A recent graduate of the University of Washington, Megan Carlin is the new Teen Services Librarian at the Sylvan Way location of the Library.

Leigh Ann recalls the day she met Megan. Leigh Ann was hosting a mini makerspace at the first Bremerton Game-Con when Megan came bounding up.

“I love making! I love the library!”

Megan exclaimed.

Leigh Ann and Megan discovered that they shared a passion for makerspaces — DIY spaces that serve as a way to build community by encouraging people to gather, learn, invent and create.

Megan describes that moment as serendipitous as well. In the final phase of her master’s degree in Library Science, she was on the hunt for an internship opportunity that would let her delve deeper into her passion for makerspaces. Just such an opportunity was available at the Library.

As an intern, Megan jumped right in. She brought an infectious blend of curiosity, dedication and optimism to the Library, inspiring her peers and empowering on every level.

“She came in with ideas instantly and really knew what the community needed,” said Seth Ciotti, Teen Technology Librarian.

During her time as an intern, Megan is credited not only for contributing to the development of the BiblioTEC program, but was also instrumental in creating a deeper connection between Kitsap Regional Library and the University of Washington. This link provides a wealth

of opportunities to sponsor other students completing their graduate degrees.

Now, Megan is having the time of her life as the newest librarian at Sylvan Way. Megan grew up in Kitsap, and feels a deep commitment to this library in particular, where her personal library story began. As a Kitsap native, she has a unique perspective on what teens here need. Her goal is to create a sense of belonging through learning and she is accomplishing just that.

“She observes and talks to teens, then creates programs without barriers and a safe space for them,” say Leigh Ann, “She gives them a voice.”

iblioTEC is rolling out in a big way. Thanks in part to an almost $400,000 National Leadership grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Kitsap Regional Library is now offering this innovative series of classes to the public at all of its nine Library locations.

“BibiloTEC is a lot of things,” says Seth Ciotti, Teen Technology librarian and manager of the BiblioTEC program. “It’s connecting youth to STEM topics — it’s allowing youth to take their interests and really develop the fundamental skills they need for a career, or to go onto further education — in an environment that they’re building with library staff.”

Students should be ready for anything when they come to a BiblioTEC class.

Participants explore everything from computer programming and web design to robotics and 3D modeling. This inquirebased learning is supported with cutting edge tools and software like 3D printers, littleBits and Scratch, and traditional favorites like marbles and clay. On any given day, students might create a stop-motion video with Legos, use Snap Circuits to build a remote-controlled car or design their own wearable art with LED circuits.

More than access to emerging technology, BiblioTEC is getting students ready for the future. It's allowing students to creatively explore topics that inspire them while building critical 21st century skills like problem-solving and leadership; it's self-direction and collaboration with the support they need to succeed.

During the past 10 years, growth in STEM jobs has increased at a rate three times greater than non-STEM jobs, with Washington state leading the charge, ranking No. 1 with the highest concentration of these jobs in the country. Yet fewer than 40 percent of students who enter college intending to major in a STEM field complete college with a STEM degree. This adds up to

a wealth of opportunity for students confident in STEM. “I think STEM education is everybody’s responsibility,” says Ciotti.

Youth Services Manager and BiblioTEC project lead, Shannon Peterson agrees, stating that the Library is a vital part of a “continuum of learning,” playing a central role in the afterschool environment.

BiblioTEC classes are now available to all youth ages 5-18, and will range from beginning classes — giving youth an introduction to a wide variety of topics to discover their interests — to more in-depth workshops and series that allow them to delve deeper into a specific topic. Advanced participants, ages 16-25, are invited to apply for internships, with opportunities being offered at all nine locations by the end of 2016.

I

n 2012, BiblioTEC was just an idea to bring STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning opportunities to the youth of Kitsap County. It was a dream of partnering with local educational and technology institutions to create a STEM-based ecosystem with students at the center.

But, what does it take to fund a dream so big? In this case, new technology and expertise was needed. The Kitsap Regional Library Foundation rolled up its sleeves and went to work, Jaime Forsyth spearheading the effort Executive Director, Kitsap Regional to raise more than half a Library Foundation million dollars, so far, to make the BiblioTEC dream a reality.

To get the dream of BiblioTEC off the ground, the Foundation worked closely with the Library to craft a radical vision of how they could change STEM education for the Kitsap community.

Inspired by this vision, the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation awarded the Library a $200,000 grant to launch a two-year project.

At the conclusion of the two years, the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation project manager was “awestruck� by the lives that had been changed; and the Library was just getting started. It was time to take BiblioTEC to the next level and offer STEM learning at all nine locations of the Library. More money was needed and

Working closely with the team that had made this program such a success, the Foundation crafted a story about BiblioTEC and a future bright with opportunity. The result? In March, 2015, Kitsap Regional Library Foundation represented the only public library awarded a National Leadership Grant by the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences. This nearly $400,000 grant has allowed the Library to continue its groundbreaking work in afterschool STEM learning, and the Foundation will

continue to play a key role in making these dreams and big ideas a reality.

Kitsap Regional Library Foundation inspires donors to support the Library beyond the means of public funding, raising funds from individuals, foundations, businesses and community organizations. Programs like Summer Learning, BiblioTEC and One Book, One Community are essential to achieving the mission of the Library and are only possible through this additional support.
