My dream has come true. I first want to thank my publisher who immediately believed in the project after seeing the collection of my father’s scanned negatives. I am also very grateful to the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Caribisch Gebied. They recognized the value of this book and partly sponsored it. I also want to thank my son Frank Platell for his effort to process some of the negatives to make them suitable for printing. And last but not least, thanks to my husband Rien te Hennepe, who has always supported me and even became my biggest sponsor. Looking through my father’s eyes, he left us an inheritance that clearly shows that people were always central in his life. This photo book shows his great passion for photography and I am so proud that he was my father. Marjon Wegman.

Eddy Wegman (17 February 1918 – 12 May 1998) was born in Doetinchem, the Netherlands. When he was young he was a boxing and cycling fanatic. As a member of Johannes Post’s resistance assault group he saved many lives during the war. After the war he received multiple royal honors for this. Wegman left for Curaçao in September 1945, where he had been offered the position of Head of the Warehouses Service at Shell. In 1947 his wife, Gé Reudink, followed and in 1948 and 1951 their two children Marjon and Eddy jr. were born. In Curaçao he devoted the little free time he had largely to his new passion: photography. As a photographer he gained the trust of the local population in a special way. This is evident in the powerful portrait photographs he took during his stay in Curaçao (1945-1963). The remarkable thing is that exactly at that time the population did not want to be photographed because of ‘the evil eye’: the camera lens that could take away your soul. This is one of the reasons why the collection of negatives he left behind for us is so special and unique. During his life Wegman received numerous awards for his work. He achieved his greatest success with the photograph of a pelican (see p. 53) he took in the Cas Corá botanical gardens. The photograph was first published in 1962 in the Dutch magazine Focus and in the American Modern Photography, the world’s largest photography magazine at that time. Take a look at postwar Curaçao through the lens of this talented amateur photographer.
