op een zeker moment een deel van zijn belang in Billiton aan Loudon verkocht en vervolgens het geld binnen een jaar in Duitse casino’s verspeelde. Ook doet Loudon ontboezemingen die hij bij zijn leven als heer van stand blijkbaar liever voor zich hield. Zo beschrijft hij hoe de heren op Billiton er lokale dames op na hielden. Van Tuyll had gezelschap van Tina, “mooi en makkelijk”, en Loudon liet “de schoonste maagd van Banka” naar het eiland komen.

Over ingenieur De Groot is Loudon in zijn aantekeningen nog negatiever. Hij beschrijft hem als “een brutale ploert” die steeds maar pretendeert de ontdekker van het tin te zijn. “Dat De Groot een grote snoever is, die zonder blozen zijn onwaarheden durft publiceren,” stelt Loudon onomwonden in zijn manuscript. “Dit een en ander te bewijzen, is het doel van dit schrijven.”

Na Loudons dood kwam zijn trommel terecht in de archieven van Billiton, het mijnbouwbedrijf dat in 1860 in Den Haag als de NV Billiton Maatschappij was opgericht om de tinvoorraden op het eiland te exploiteren. In jubileumboeken over Billiton werden de geschriften en opmerkingen van Loudon wel aangestipt, maar ze bleven verder ongepubliceerd. In 1970 werd Billiton een onderdeel van Shell, dat in 1987 het archief waar de trommel deel van uitmaakte overdroeg aan het Algemeen Rijksarchief in Den Haag. In dit boekje, dat verschijnt ter gelegenheid van het 150-jarig bestaan van Billiton, gaat de trommel definitief open.

De hoofdmoot van deze publicatie vormt de tekst van De eerste jaren der BillitonOnderneming, aangevuld met selecties uit Loudons dagboek- en andere aantekeningen (gezet in een blauw lettertype tussen ¶ ¶). Minder interessante passages uit de 1884 publicatie zijn weggelaten. Toegevoegd zijn tussenkopjes, illustraties en korte toelichtingen van anderen (met blauwe achtergrond). Omwille van de leesbaarheid is het Nederlands omgezet in hedendaagse spelling, afgezien van de geografische namen.

Als introductie op dat verhaal volgt nu echter eerst een korte geschiedenis van Loudons levensjaren voor en na de Billiton-onderneming. Een kort overzicht van de opeenvolgende Billiton bedrijven vormt het slot van deze uitgave.

De eerste westerling die ooit Curaçao op zijn netvlies registreerde was Alonso de Ojeda, die de dualiteit van dit eiland beschreef met de woorden: ”Isla de los Gigantes” (Eiland van de reuzen), maar uiteindelijk bestempelde als “Isla inutil” (Nutteloos eiland). Meer dan een eeuw later erkenden de Fransen, de Engelsen en de Nederlanders het strategisch belang van dit nutteloze eiland als handelsbasis voor de lucratieve transatlantische slavenhandel. Deze dubbele beeldvorming van Curaçao als ener­ zijds een uniek en anderzijds een nutteloos eiland is door de koloniale eeuwen heen weinig veranderd.

Vanuit het monoculturele westerse perspectief heeft de hybride, multiculturele bastaardcultuur van Curaçao, tot op de dag van vandaag weinig respect kunnen genereren binnen het Nederlandse kunstbeleid. Door deze multiculturele bastaardidentiteit is het onmogelijk de Caraïbische kunst uitsluitend vanuit een westers perspectief te beoordelen.

De op het eerste gezicht westerse uitstraling van de beeldende kunst van Curaçao verbergt een Caraïbische invulling die wederom een spiegel vindt in de hybride Caraïbische spiritualiteit. Het het spreekwoord: “What you see is not always what you get” illustreert de complexiteit van het Caraïbische beeldidioom.

De Mayacultuur is een van de meest fascinerende ter wereld. Lang werden de Maya geportretteerd als mysterieuze sterrenkijkers, die – ver weg van andere samenlevingen en gebaseerd op oude wijsheid – een superieure cultuur wisten te ontwikkelen. Yum Ixim Yum Ixim is de naam van de Maïsgod in het hedendaagse Yucatán. In de klassieke periode werden verschillende verschijningsvormen van de Maïsgod genoemd: Jun Ixim en Ajan. Deze verschillende vormen waren waarschijnlijk verbonden met verschillende groeistadia van de maïsplant. Yum Ixim betekent letterlijk “de eigenaar van de maïs”. Hij symboliseert leven, vruchtbaarheid, landbouw en overvloed en wordt vaak afgebeeld als een jongeman met een afgeplat hoofd. Bij de Maya is dit een teken van schoonheid: het hoofd heeft zo de vorm van een maïskolf gekregen. Op de kruin van zijn hoofd zijn vaak de bladeren van de maïsplant afgebeeld en in zijn handen houdt hij vaak ook een maïsplant.

In het oorsprongsverhaal van de K’iche’, opgeschreven in de Popol Vuh, worden de obstakels die de hoofdpersonages moeten overwinnen, uitvoerig uit de doeken gedaan. Op uitnodiging van de negen goden van de onderwereld reist de heldentweeling, Hunahpu en Xbalanque, naar Xibalba om daar het balspel te spelen. Enkel gewapend met hun blaaspijp daalt de tweeling de donkere steile trappen af.

Na de afdaling moeten zij eerst twee rivieren oversteken, één van modder en één van bloed. Om daar niet in te hoeven zwemmen, gebruiken zij hun blaaspijpen als vlot. Eenmaal aangekomen aan de overkant dienen ze een aantal proeven te doorstaan:

De dode moet zelf proberen het dodenrijk te vinden, waar zijn voorouders hem opwachten.

Omdat de site zoveel te lijden heeft gehad onder plunderaars, is het van veel monumenten uit Tortuguero niet bekend hoe en waar zij precies zijn gevonden. Dit geldt ook voor Monument 6. Bovendien is het monument in het verleden in verschillende fragmenten gebroken en is het niet precies bekend hoeveel van deze fragmenten er oorspronkelijk waren. Op het moment zijn er nog zeven fragmenten bekend, geïdentificeerd als fragment A tot en met G. Fragmenten A, B, C en D vormen het centrale deel van Monument 6. Fragmenten E, F en G vormen het rechterzijpaneel. Van het linkerzijpaneel zijn tot op heden geen fragmenten bekend.

Op basis van de overgebleven fragmenten is wel duidelijk dat het monument ooit de vorm had van een hoofdletter T. Volgens reconstructies van de Duitse archeoloog Sven Gronemeyer was het monument circa 190 centimeter hoog en circa 131 centimeter breed aan de bovenkant.

Het monument had een dikte van ongeveer 13 centimeter.

Van de zeven bekende fragmenten van Monument 6 bevinden zich er vier nog in Mexico. Deze fragmenten – A, C, D en G – maken deel uit van de collectie van het museum Carlos Pellicer Camára in de stad Villahermosa in de staat Tabasco. De andere drie elementen – B, E en F – zijn op een bepaald moment via de illegale kunsthandel in de Verenigde Staten terecht gekomen. Van fragment B is bekend dat het deel uitmaakt van de collectie van het Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. De andere twee fragmenten zijn in de jaren zeventig verkocht aan galeries in Boston, maar waar zij nu zijn is onbekend.

Het plein is de belangrijkste plek van het dorp. Hier worden dorpsvergaderingen gehouden en vinden ook de wekelijkse markt en jaarfeesten plaats. Het is meestal ook de plek waar basketbal en voetbal gespeeld wordt in de avonduren. Belangrijke feesten worden georganiseerd door een groep mensen, de mayordomía. Daarbij wordt het hele dorp uitgenodigd en worden de gasten dus ook geacht iedereen eten en drinken aan te bieden. Het onderhoud van wegen en andere publieke gebouwen is de taak van de hele gemeenschap en iedereen draagt daaraan bij.

Amsterdam is bekend om zijn grachten, de torens en om zijn stadhuis dat bij voltooiing het Achtste Wereldwonder werd genoemd. Maar het unieke van de stad ligt in een bouwstijl die gekenmerkt wordt door hals- en klokgevels versierd met beschilderd beeldhouwwerk dat nog het meest lijkt op slagroom. Wie er op let ziet deze ‘pruiken’ overal in het centrum, soms bij tientallen tegelijk. Niets is Amsterdamser dan deze huizen met pruiken.

De gevel met pruik werd bedacht door een Amsterdamse architect, Philips Vingboons, omstreeks het midden van de zeventiende eeuw. Binnen korte tijd was de “Vingboonsgevel” in de stad een ware rage, die in verschillende versies en variaties meer dan honderd jaar stand hield.

Dit opmerkelijke fotoboek is in de eerste plaats bestemd voor de toerist, die maar een paar dagen in de hoofdstad kan doorbrengen. Maar het is ook bestemd voor iedere andere bezoeker of bewoner die, wandelend door de smalle straatjes, de architectonische schoonheid boven hem nauwelijks opmerkt.

Oceania at the Tropenmuseum is not in the first place a book on tribal art, but rather a treatise on the coming of existence and growth of a wellknown Oceanic collection, which started at the beginning of the 20th century with the joining together of the collections of the Colonial Museum in the Dutch provincial town of Haarlem and the ethnographic collection of Artis, the Amsterdam Zoo. The objects were, then and later on, brought together by early explorers, travellers, scientific expeditions, missionaries, Dutch government officials, ethnologists and collectors of tribal art, most of them within the context of Dutch colonial presence in New Guinea, from where the majority of objects originate. During the last hundred years the intellectual approach of the collection changed from evidences of primitive cultures in far-away places to the cultural heritage of world citizens, whose objects of art and material culture has been amassed during the colonial period of Western history. This richly illustrated book emphasizes this historical

He worked at the Tropenmuseum from 1970 to 2010, most recently as the curator for the Oceania and historical collections, and has published work on the history of collections.

Indische Nederlanders in voormalig Nieuw-Guinea

In de jaren 1945 tot halverwege de jaren zestig werden 250.000 Indische Nederlanders

naar Nederland gerepatrieerd. Voor hen was geen toekomst meer in het naoorlogse Indië en de jonge staat Indonesië. Minder bekend is dat vele anderen hun toevlucht zochten in voormalig Nieuw-Guinea.

Toen Nederland op 27 december 1949 het bestuur over Nederlands-Indië overdroeg aan Indonesië was Nieuw-Guinea in die soevereiniteitsoverdracht niet meegenomen.

Enkele duizenden Indische Nederlanders besloten dit ‘laatste kroonjuweel’ tot hun nieuwe thuisland te maken. Het gebied was echter nauwelijks ontgonnen en voorzieningen waren er amper. Ze gingen een uiterst onzekere toekomst tegemoet, maar ze

gingen omdat ze hoe dan ook in vrijheid konden leven. Weliswaar in een on-Indische sfeer en een omgeving waar niets was, maar betrekkelijk dicht bij hun geboortegrond.

Zij konden niet bevroeden dat Nieuw-Guinea inzet zou worden van het almaar oplo-

pende steekspel tussen de Nederlandse en de Indonesische autoriteiten, gesteund door de Verenigde Naties en de VS. Nederland droeg Nieuw-Guinea op 1 oktober 1962 over aan de VN, waarna het een half jaar later alsnog in Indonesische handen overging. De circa 12.000 Indische Nederlanders moesten voor de tweede keer ‘hun land’ verlaten.

The large economic importance of cocoa for the Dutch economy, and the role of the Dutch in the international cocoa chain, demands a strong knowledge infrastructure, one able to support the dynamic character of the Dutch cocoa cluster.

In response to the extremely difficult economic circumstances faced by many cocoa farmers, and driven by the risks of future supply shortages worldwide, the cocoa sector is currently on the move. Chocolate Forever

The Netherlands take up a central position in the international cocoa chain, especially in transporting and processing cocoa beans.

Despite the economic importance of cocoa, a solid cocoa knowledge base seems to be lacking. The momentum of sustainability currently present in the Dutch cocoa chain offers a good opportunity to examine the status of knowledge availability, development and applicability. What knowledge do actors working on a more sustainable chain lack?

Where do they get their knowledge from and who are their partners? What knowledge is being developed and how is it being applied?

By providing the answers to these questions this study aims to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the Dutch knowledge base and provide recommendations on improving it.
