Hadlakat Neirot Lighting the Candles We light the Shabbat candles before Shabbat begins (see Jewish calendar for weekly Shabbat times) Light two candles, then wave your hands towards yourself three times to welcome and bring in Shabbat. Then cover your eyes and recite the following blessing:

Kiddush - Blessing over wine
Before saying Kiddush, we make sure that the challot have been covered with a challah cloth. Everyone stands around the table. The leader holds up a cup of kosher wine or grape juice and says the following blessing:
Why do we cover the challah during Kiddush?
We cover the challah so it isn’t “embarrassed” while we say the blessing over wine.

Netilat Yadayim
Ritual handwashing before eating bread We wash our hands before Hamotzi to prepare ourselves before eating bread. Bread is seen as special and important in Judaism, so we treat eating it with extra respect. Fill a cup of water and pour it over each hand twice. Then say the blessing before drying your hands. We don’t speak after saying this blessing until we have eaten the Challah!
Blessed are You, God, King of the world, who makes us holy and tells us to wash our hands

Challah - Braided bread The leader raises the 2 Challot and says the following blessing:
Blessed are You, God, King of the world, who gives us grains to make bread. Once the blessing has been said, the leader tears or slices the Challah into pieces and sprinkle a small amount of salt. The leader takes the first piece and shares the rest out to those sitting at the table.
Why do we sprinkle salt on the Challah?
We sprinkle salt to remind us of practices and holiness in the times of the Beit Hamikdash (Temple).
