‫קדש‬ Kadesh - Blessing over wine We start the seder by drinking your first cup of wine. Fill up your glass with wine or grape juice – WE LEAN TO THE LEFT when we drink our wine/ grape juice. Question: Why do we lean to the left? Answer: To show we are free! In ancient times, free people ate whilst leaning and slaves would eat standing up.

‫ברוך אתה ה אלוקינו מלך העולם בורא פרי הגפן‬ Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech haolam borei pri hagafen Blessed are You, Hashem our God, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the vine

‫ברוך אתה ה אלוקינו מלך העולם שהחיינו וקיימנו‬ ‫והגיענו לזמן הזה‬ Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech haolam shehecheyanu vekiyemanu vehigianu lazman hazeh Blessed are You, Hashem our God, King of the universe, who has kept us alive, sustained us, and brought us to this time

‫ורחץ‬ Urchatz - Washing hands (no blessing) This is the part of the seder where some people wash their hands in preparation for eating the Karpas vegetable. We do not say a bracha after washing hands.

7

‫כרפס‬ Karpas - vegetable & salt water We dip a small piece of vegetable in to salt water and say the following bracha:

‫ברוך אתה ה׳ אלוקינו מלך העולם בורא פרי האדמה‬ Baruch Atah HaShem Eloheinu Melech ha’olam borei pri ha’adamah Blessed are You, HaShem our God, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the ground.

Question: Why do we dip the vegetable in salt water? Answer: To remind us of the tears that were shed when we were slaves in Egypt

8

‫יחץ‬ Yachatz - Breaking middle Matzah We will now take the stack of 3 matzahs divided by serviettes on the table and we will break the middle matzah in 2 pieces. The bigger piece is put aside in the Afikomen bag to be hidden later. The smaller piece is put back in the middle stack, between the other 2 matzahs. Question: Why do we break the middle matzah and put away the larger piece? Answer: To remind us of our slavery- slaves need to keep food for later as they don’t know when their next meal will come. It also reminds us that hidden things still matter.

9

‫מגיד‬ Maggid -Telling the Passover story We tell the story of our exodus from Egypt. Long ago, the Jewish people lived in Egypt. The king of Egypt, Pharaoh, made them slaves. They had to work very hard and their lives were sad. They cried to Hashem for help. Hashem chose Moshe to help them. Moshe went to Pharaoh and said, “Let my people go,” but Pharaoh said no. So Hashem sent ten plagues to Egypt. Each time, Pharaoh still refused. Before the last plague, Hashem told every Jewish family to bring a Korban Pesach (a special Passover offering - a lamb or goat). They put some of its blood on their doorposts. That night, Hashem passed over the Jewish homes and kept them safe. Then, finally, Pharaoh told the Jews to leave. They left very quickly. Their bread did not have time to rise, so they made flat bread called matzah. Soon Pharaoh changed his mind and chased after them. The Jewish people came to the sea and were scared. Then Hashem made a great miracle. He split the sea, and the Jewish people walked through on dry land! Then the water came back down and stopped the Egyptians and the Jewish people were saved. THE JEWISH PEOPLE WERE FREE AT LAST! Every year on Passover, we tell this story to remember that G-d took us out from slavery to freedom.
