This year marks the centennial of Kirloskarvadi Railway Station. To commemorate this milestone, India Post and Indian Railways have honoured KBL in a special way. Kirloskarvadi once a barren land spanning 32 acres has come a long way, from ploughs to the supply of pumps for critical applications in nuclear power plants. This railway station was fundamental to our successful journey.

CMD FOREWORD

This year marks the centenary of renaming the Kirloskarvadi Railway Station. We have been honoured by the India Post for KBL’s contribution towards nation-building and for releasing two special covers, "100 Years of Kirloskarvadi Railway Station" and “One District-One Product”. Also, a unique pictorial stamp with a picture of a KBL pump has been released to acclaim and highlight the significance of our Kirloskarvadi manufacturing facility.

My great-grandfather, Shri. Laxmanrao Kirloskar, envisioned and contributed to making India Atmnirbhar. He forever kept the spirit of “Swadeshi” philosophy at the forefront, establishing the first-of-its-kind industrial township ‘Kirloskarvadi’ for manufacturing engineering products in India.

The Kirloskarvadi railway station played a critical role in our successful journey because it was the only way to commute then, which helped us deliver the goods to the farmers, across households and several industries. In the initial years, the Indian Railways and India Post were the founding pillars of our key operations at Kirloskarvadi.

India received some of the earliest engineering products from Kirloskarvadi, which contributed substantially to India's development. And as we approach yet another year, we are focused on delivering on our promise to uphold the trust and honour that have been bestowed upon us and move nearer our purpose, “Transcending Boundaries. Enriching Lives.”

I wish you all a healthy and prosperous New Year 2023.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF KIRLOSKARVADI RAILWAY STATION

It was a moment of great pride and joy as we celebrated 100 years of the Kirloskarvadi Railway Station on 24th November 2022. But what made this moment memorable is when India Post released a unique pictorial stamp, the first of its kind in India, with a picture of the KBL pump and two special covers, the first to commemorate 100 Years of Kirloskarvadi Railway Station and the second to honour the contribution of Kirloskarvadi under the scheme of ‘One DistrictOne Product’.

It was on 15 th February 1922, when Kundal Road Railway Station, near Kirloskarvadi, Sangli district, was renamed Kirloskarvadi Railway Station, recognising the contribution of Kirloskarvadi in bringing economic and social growth to the region. However, it was the presence of this railway station that played a critical role in the successful journey of Kirloskar Brothers Limited.

In 1910, when Shri. Laxmanrao Kirloskar was selecting the location to establish Kirloskarvadi, it was a tough decision to make. Which part of Aundh state could one go to? It would make no sense if the location was far off from a railway station. It should not be desolate

and must have basic amenities such as water supply, roads, a market, and a post office in its vicinity. There was hardly any time to find out all this information. However, he decided to choose a location that had a railway station in its vicinity. If the railway station is there, other amenities will follow! The 36 acres barren land allotted to him for setting up the factory and the colony was about 200 metres away from the railway station, and that’s how the land got selected where the Kirloskarvadi is set up.

of Kirloskarvadi operation. However, it was also the presence of the Indian postal service at Kirloskarvadi that contributed to the success of the company. During those days, product orders and other communications were done only through the post.

Kirloskarvadi operation, many people came to meet him to see his work. Mr. Muise Moyse, the District Collector of Satara at the time, was one of them. He was fascinated by the work done by Shri. Laxmanrao Kirloskar and would always visit the factory when he camped around the area. After his retirement, as he was moving back to London, he asked for help from Shri. Laxmanrao Kirloskar to look after the family of one of his butlers of many years, Rajba Chabukswar, who had expired of a heart attack, and said that he would send monthly expenses for his family by cheque. Shri. Laxmanrao Kirloskar took over the responsibility but disagreed to accept any money for the deceased family’s wellbeing. During this conversation, one of the close associates of Laxmanrao requested Mr. Moyse to change the name of Kundal Road to Kirloskarvadi Railway Station, which was grandly celebrated.

The success of KBL and all Kirloskar Group companies that evolved from Kirloskarvadi, namely Kirloskar Oil Engines Ltd. (KOEL), Kirloskar Electric Ltd., Kirloskar Pneumatic Ltd., etc., is attributed to the Kirloskarvadi railway station, as it was the only mode of communication to commute and for transportation of goods, which played a critical role in the initial year

Kirloskarvadi gave India some of the first engineering products like iron ploughs, pumps, engines, motors, compressors, and many more. These products went on to significantly contribute to the industrial and agricultural progress of India. But the success of these products happened due to the movement of raw materials and finished products through the railway station. Apart from this, Kirloskarvadi railway station was the only way of commuting for workers and people staying nearby that were critical to the success of KBL. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, V Shantaram, Baburao Painter, Dada Saheb Phalke, Bharat Ratna awardee Dhondo Keshav Karve, Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, and many others have travelled by train to Kirloskarvadi.

Today, as we look back to 122 years of this glorious journey of Kirloskarvadi, we are immensely proud of what this factory has achieved over the years. Products that are manufactured here are used by millions of

farmers, households, and across all industrial sectors. They are used in critical sectors like nuclear plants and defence. The products manufactured at Kirloskarvadi are used in over 160 countries around the globe. They are used at many iconic structures in India and around the world, like the Atal Tunnel, the Statue of Unity, the White House, Burj al-Arab, the Shard, etc. It was at Kirloskarvadi that Shri. Laxmanrao Kirloskar dreamt and succeeded in making India Atmnirbhar. He was the earliest crusader of the "Make in India" initiative encouraged by the Indian government

recently. The success of Kirloskarvadi propelled KBL to become one of the most trusted brands in the world, creating a positive impact economically and enriching the lives of people. However, it was the Indian Railways and India Postal Department whose support during the early stage of Kirloskarvadi, remains the critical factor in the success of KBL. This honour bestowed on us by India post and Indian Railway has only made the journey etched eternally in our memories.

In what could trigger a revolution in generating power using a flowing stream of water, Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited (SJPNL) and Kirloskar Brothers Limited (KBL) have successfully completed a pilot scheme capable of generating up to 3 kilowatts of clean and green power.

The pilot project was undertaken at a Water Treatment Plant in AshwaniKhad, Himachal Pradesh, by SJPNL where KBL’s PICO product, which is a Micro Hydropower generator, was put to use. This innovation has the potential to electrify remote locations and villages.

PICO is a compact and sophisticated version of ‘Pump as Turbine’ (PAT) which are small bundled units capable of generating power up to 5 kW by using a flowing stream of water from any source, like a river, or even reject water from a WTP or an STP.

With this innovative solution, KBL can help consumers generate hydropower. A spokesperson from Kirloskar Brothers Limited said, With this innovative solution, we

can help consumers generate hydropower of up to 500 kW from a running water stream with suitable head and flow availability. It is basically a pump running in reverse mode (as a turbine), which uses water to generate electricity. With decreasing coal reserves and rising levels of air pollution, we are more and more inclined towards harnessing natural, renewable resources for generating power. KBL has always strived to develop and promote innovative products. Developed by our R&D team, the PICO Micro Hydropower Generator can be used in hilly

areas and even in process industries as small hydropower generation plants.

Commenting on this milestone, Mr. Mandeep Gupta, Executive Engineer, Jal Shakti Vibhag, Shimla said, "This is an appreciated technology that can foresee enormous potential in the state. We'll be watching to see how this concept can maximise the department's and state's potential."

KBL’s PICO - Micro Hydropower generator was used in the pilot project.

Innovation has the potential to electrify remote locations and villages.

The green power will be a source for SJPNL’s campus lighting and other applications, reducing the dependence on traditional sources of energy.

Apart from generating power, these units can also be coupled directly to a pump using a coupling, gear, or pulley arrangement, which could be used to pump water from remote locations where the availability of power is a challenge. Therefore, we understand that this multi-purpose machine can be used for various applications, invariably supporting the whole gamut of energy conservation.

Successful Design, Testing, and Installation of Pumps with Flywheel in Vertical Orientation

Kirloskar Brothers Limited and SPP pump jointly designed 3 off Flywheel pump set for UK water company Galliford Try and Yorkshire Water. A customised engineering solution was made to overcome potential inertia (surge suppression) in the system. Additionally, the

requirement was for a shear pin integrated with a flywheel of inertia of 260 Kg.m2 for surge protection and a breaking torque of 4000 Nm.

The methods of using surge suppression vessels were too expensive and were putting the project at risk.

SPP engineers designed a flywheel, which is the simplest and most effective solution to counter the effect of water hammer, which led the pump to gradually coast down, thus minimising large transient pressure surges (the Water Hammer Effect).

Rodelta pumps and ABB motors

Rodelta Pumps International was selected by Shell to supply close-coupled pumps for the new Red2Green biofuel plant being constructed in Rotterdam. When planned production starts in 2024, the plant will produce 820,000 tonnes per year of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable biodiesel, which will reduce CO2 emissions by 2.8 million tonnes every year - the equivalent of taking one million cars off the road.

Close-coupled pumps are technically very demanding. Close coupling means that the

motor and pump are integrated into a single unit, with the pump impeller directly mounted on the motor shaft. The pump does not have its own bearings, and the motor’s bearings have to withstand all the forces generated. As the motor and pump are totally integrated, the motor and pump manufacturers work closely together to ensure that all tolerances are within agreed-upon specifications. Rodelta’s close-coupled pumps (OH5) are part of the company’s API range, a pump configuration defined in American Petroleum Institute standard API 610.

Successful Projects September - December 2022
support the transition to low-emission biofuels.
13
KBL’s Dutch subsidiary and Dutch pump manufacturer, Rodelta , in collaboration with ABB , recently redesigned its close-coupled range, enabling a contract to supply pumps for one of Europe’s largest biofuel plants.

Complete hydraulic redesign

"A new edition of the API standard was released in early 2021, and this was a great opportunity for us to launch our new hydraulic redesign of OH5 pumps," says Ronald Dijkers from Rodelta. "It was a big project.

We carefully studied the new requirements and worked closely with ABB to optimise

our solution. "ABB redesigned the motors according to our specifications."

Rodelta’s OH5 range previously consisted of inline pumps, but as part of the redesign, they added ‘U-turn’ versions with the suction and discharge connections on the same side. The same ABB motors are used for both versions.

Small footprint and low maintenance

Important benefits of OH5 pumps are that they have a much smaller footprint than horizontally mounted pumps, and therefore save space. Close-coupled pumps do not have a gearbox or other coupling, which eliminates alignment issues and avoids wear problems related to mechanical components. These factors have made close-coupled pumps increasingly popular,

especially in chemical, oil, and gas applications, and sales have risen rapidly in recent years.

In addition to a batch of engineered pumps for Shell’s high-profile Red2Green plant, other recent successes for Rodelta’s close-coupled pumps include seven new U-turn pumps for a second Shell project in the Netherlands, as well as 38 pumps for a project in Southeast Asia.
