REDUCING THE CARBON FOOTPRINT THROUGH A UNIQUE SYSTEM DESIGN FOR RECOVERING AND REUSING ENERGY AT OUR HYDRAULIC RESEARCH CENTRE Each year, about 0.77 million units of electricity are consumed for the testing of pumps at the hydraulic research centre (HRC), Kirloskarvadi works. In the traditional method of pump testing, the operating point (head and flow) of a pump is simulated by artificially creating system resistance by throttling the flow control valve on the pump’s discharge pipe. The hydraulic energy produced by the pump (pressure head) is dissipated in overcoming the resistance offered by the valve. An energy recovery system has been

designed and installed at HRC to recover part of this energy, which would otherwise get dissipated in the valve. This system consists of a pumpas-turbine (PaT) and Induction Motor as Generator (IMAG) chosen from the standard product lines of Kirloskar Brothers Limited (KBL).

The energy recovery turbine is designed to produce a continuous power output of up to 100 kW during the testing of pumps. The electrical system is designed to feed the generated power back to the grid, but

since the pump-under-test is the nearest load, the produced power gets consumed by the pump under test. Thus, the total power requirement during pump testing gets reduced by up to 100 kW. The estimated reduction in annual operating cost on account of reduction in the energy consumption shall be approximately INR 1.5 million, with the present frequency of testing on test-bed no. 1. Apart from the financial benefits, the energy recovery turbine will increase the share of renewable energy and thereby strengthen

KBL’s effort in conserving the environment. Presently, KBL produces about 27% of total energy requirements from renewable energy sources.

As described above, the hydroturbine used in the energy recovery system is a pump operating in reverse mode.

Though this technology is quite a mature one, it is observed that many customers have apprehension about this technology, especially regarding the control and power evacuation aspects.

(HRC) shall be accessible to all interested customers and visitors to experience the PaT and IMAG technology closely.

The project is under Madhya Pradesh Jal Nigam Limited.

SUCCESSFUL COMMISSIONING OF MAGAZINE FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEM AT CENTRE FOR FIRE, EXPLOSIVE AND ENVIRONMENT SAFETY KBL have successfully completed the installation and commissioning of the Magazine Fire Fighting System (MFFS) at Centre for Fire, Explosive and Environment Safety (CFEES) in association with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. MFFS system is used for fire protection of ammunition storage and magazine compartments in Naval Warships. This system is an indigenous development under “Make in India” initiative.

SUCCESSFUL TESTING OF HKT-397 HYDRO TURBINE We are glad to share that for the first time, KBL had conducted model test of a hydro turbine and successfully achieved the desired results in the first attempt. KBL is the sole authority of intellectual property rights of the complete model and test results.

KBL DEVELOPED AND SUPPLIED A LARGE VERTICAL TURBINE PUMP FOR CIRCULATION OF FERMENTATION BROTH APPLICATION

KBL recently developed and supplied a large Vertical Turbine pumpset. It is a single-stage Horizontal Axial Flow Pump developed for use in the Circulation of Fermentation Broth. The pump has a discharge capacity up to 12960 m3/hr at 365 rpm and 10368 m3/hr at 285 rpm. The castings, shafting, sleeves, and fasteners comply with NACE MR0175/ ISO 15156 and ME010. It has Dual Pressurized Mechanical Seal with plan 54.

KBL PARTICIPATED IN KISAN AGRI SHOW 2022 AND ALL INDIA FARMER FAIR EXHIBITION KBL participated in India’s largest agricultural exhibition, KISAN AGRI SHOW, at Moshi, Pune. Ms. Rama Kirloskar, Joint Managing Director - KBL, inaugurated the stall. The company showcased a series of new generation energy-efficient pumps, including recently launched high-efficiency pumps like AARNA, ANAYA, RIAN, Jaldaksh, Jalhasti, Jaltara and submersible pumps like KP4 Jalraaj UVA and NEO Series Pumps. These pumps are made with advanced technology and consume less energy for high performance.
