ABOUT

My parents gave me a Swiss Army Knife when I was five years old and an axe when I was eight. I had an unusual upbringing as I was home schooled in Maine until 8th grade. I had a bit of free time each day, during which I made things, I spent time exploring in the forest around our house or I took things apart. These activities gave me a positive outlet where I could let my mind run free.

I learn best by doing and seeing. I am at my happiest when I am creating with my hands: sketching, art, models, cooking, fixing a bicycle or scaling rock. I have a tenacious curiosity. I nearly drove my parents and everyone around me mad with the amount of questions I asked as a child. Today my hands are covered with scars from that Swiss Army knife and I probably should have gotten stitches....a few times. But I’ll tell you, I learned very quickly what not to do and I have been making things ever since.

Design for me is about asking questions: why, how, what if, or why not? It is a search for possibilities. I’ve had Dyslexia since...always and to this day I still cannot spell very well, but it is not a disorder in my mind, it is a blessing. It allows me to see the world differently, upsidedown, forward, and yes backward. The world is full of possibilities and there is so much to learn, but I firmly believe youth is a quality, not an age. I will never stop asking questions, never stop exploring and never stop making with my hands until the day I die.

The world is full of stress and distractions: can we create a piece of furniture that promotes contemplation, introspection and reflection?

We have a few wheel attachments, but they all have a laundry list of problems: either too narrow or too wide, too bulky or too heavy, not enough stability and very difficult to transport.

Complaints: If its not life threatening enough to bring in the life flight, then transporting injured patients is the most difficult, and exhausting things we do. The wheel attachments we have are all bolt on, so that can be a problem getting patients into it if we don’t have them back boarded already.

Also they are all too wide for steep and narrow trails. The single wheels we have are narrow, but nowhere near stable enough and the brake systems are all bulky and hard to use.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

“Individuals need to carry tools while cycling, yet no one wants items hanging off their bikes and everyone hates things in their pockets.

How can we reduce the number of items cyclists must carry?”

Multi-tools are one of the most common carried items for a bicycle, handlebar integration keeps the tool out of the elements and within easy accessibility for the user.

SKETCH MODELS AND USABILITY TESTING

The initial prototype failed as it did not provide enough leverage for bolts.

It did prove that the space inside the handlebar was usable, but it asked the question, how can you increase leverage in such a small space?

There is no avoiding the basics and for quick color studies and accents there are few tools as quick and as convenient as markers.

Technology has come a long way in the last few years for 3D printing.

I am still a firm believer in the use of hand skills for some models, but there is a time and place to utilize the best resources available.
