When we first imagined Green Box nearly two decades ago, we hoped to create a place where art, nature, and community could meet in ways that felt both intimate and expansive. Each year since, we’ve watched that hope take root—through the artists who bring bold ideas to our mountain town, the families who return summer after summer, and the neighbors who have embraced this festival as part of the rhythm of life in Green Mountain Falls.

This year’s festival continues that spirit of possibility. Throughout the

16 days of the Festival, you’ll encounter work that invites reflection, sparks conversation, and celebrates the creative courage that defines Green Box. From performances and installations to workshops and gatherings, every moment is shaped by the belief that the arts can deepen our connection to one another and to this extraordinary landscape.

We are profoundly grateful to the artists, partners, volunteers, and supporters who make this festival possible—and to you, our audience, whose curiosity and generosity sustain Green Box year after year.

Dear Friends, Welcome to the 18th Annual Green Box Arts Festival, where the mountains hold their breath just long enough for us to listen. Each summer, this valley becomes a meeting place—between people and ideas, between art and the natural world, between the familiar and the newly imagined.

This year, we invite you to pause, to notice the quiet architecture of the landscape, to honor the hands and histories that shape this region, and to consider the delicate web of relationships that binds us to one

another and to the land beneath our feet.

Where can I purchase tickets?

Tickets can be purchased online at greenboxarts.org or by visiting or calling our Box Office (6990 Lake Street, Green Mountain Falls, CO. 719-465-3065 x1). The Box Office is open daily from 9AM-5PM during the Festival.

Can I buy tickets at the door?

Yes, you can purchase tickets at the door at event venues, subject to availability.

Where do I get my tickets?

Green Box utilizes e-tickets for all events. All tickets are delivered digitally via email at time of purchase.

Customers who provide a cell phone number will receive e-tickets via text message one hour before the event. If you do not receive a confirmation email when purchasing tickets online, please call the Box Office.

Do I need to bring my tickets with me to events?

Tickets will indicate whether they must be presented for entry.

Can I select my own seat?

For events with reserved seating, you can select your seats online or over the phone with Box Office Staff.

For performances with general admission tickets, seating is first-come, first-served at the venue.

Is there accessible seating at the Sallie Bush Community Center?

Yes. To purchase accessible or companion seats, please log in to your Green Box account online and check the box next to “I need wheelchair accessible seating” in your profile. You will then be able to purchase accessible seating for events at Sallie Bush online. You may also call the Box Office, and a staff member will be happy to assist you.

Are Festival events & venues accessible?

The Green Box Farm Stand, Sallie Bush Community Center, and Church in the Wildwood are all wheelchair accessible. Some of our festival venues include steep areas and gravel roads (Lakeview Terrace, Mountain Road Corner), which may require extra consideration for wheelchairs, walkers, or other mobility devices.

If you need additional support or have specific questions about accessibility options, please contact the Box Office.

Where can I park?

There is various street parking in town. Additionally, refer to the map on Page 54 for parking lots. Parking in neighborhoods is prohibited. On the 4th of July, a shuttle bus will run continuously from the Ute Pass Elementary School parking lot to Green Box venues.

Are there accessible parking spaces at Green Box venues?

Sallie Bush Community Center and Church in the

Wildwood have accessible parking. Not every location has a paved parking lot, and so there are not designated spaces. We encourage all attendees to arrive early to secure parking.

In order to maintain capacity limits for safety, we require everyone attending an event to hold a ticket.

Can I bring my pets?

We love pets and are happy to see well-behaved, leashed dogs at any of our outdoor events. Only service animals are allowed in indoor venues, including the Green Mountain Falls Skyspace.

Will there be vendors selling art, food or other merchandise?

Concessions and merchandise will be available at most performing arts events, and art for sale will be available in Studio 1 at the Green Box Workshop.

Do you offer programming for families with children?

Yes! While children are welcome at most events, there are specific events designed for children and

families, which you can read about starting on page 48. We recommend checking out the 4th of July festivities on page 16 and Winnie The Pooh on page 29.

What happens if I’m attending an outdoor event, and it rains?

In the event of weather, Green Box will communicate via email and text message (if you’ve provided

a cell phone number) any changes to events, including venue or time change. You can also check for updates on the homepage of our website. We recommend checking weather ahead of events and dressing accordingly.

What is Green Box’s ticket purchase & refund policy?

All ticket purchases are final and non-refundable. Tickets may be exchanged for other events during the Festival, in person or via email, subject to availability. When exchanging for an event with a higher ticket price, you must pay the additional cost. When exchanging for an event with a lower cost, refunds will not be given for the difference in price.

What was your inspiration for Weight of the Sky? I've been living in Colorado for twenty years and the sky still catches me off guard sometimes. This one came from watching a storm move through — that specific moment when the light underneath the clouds goes electric and warm while everything above it stays heavy and dark. The land picks up all that gold at the horizon and the water just mirrors whatever the sky is doing.

I called it Weight of the Sky because that's exactly what it feels, like the sky has actual mass. Colorado weather has a physical presence that I never experienced growing up in Michigan — storms here don't just pass through, they take over. And when the light breaks at the horizon like that, right at the edge of something heavy, I have to paint it.

You work with raw materials like charcoal, rust, and gold leaf.

What draws you to these elements?

It comes down to the fact that these materials already have a story before I ever touch them. Rust has been somewhere. Charcoal came from something that was once alive.

Gold leaf has this ancient, geological quality to it — like finding a vein of mineral in a rock face. When I work with them, I'm not just applying color to a surface. I'm working with time. Traditional paint is incredible, but these raw materials bring an authenticity that I can't fake with a brush. .

What made you become an artist?

I can't remember a time when art wasn't part of my life. My mom was an artist, and there

were times where I’d be helping her paint murals in high school. It just always felt like a natural language. When it came time to go back to school for my master's degree I chose art, and spent the next ten years teaching middle school art, both two dimensional and three dimensional. That was its own kind of creative work, watching kids discover what they're capable of making. Then COVID hit and everything shifted. I was already dabbling in the art scene enough that I thought — let's see if this can actually work. It was a leap.

In 2018 I applied for a call for art at what was then Kreuser Gallery — now Auric — and I haven't looked back since. I've been a full time artist since 2020. Best decision I ever made.

Growing up in Michigan and now living in Colorado, how do these two landscapes show up differently in your work?

Michigan is water and woods and this soft, diffused light that hangs low and spreads evenly across everything. The landscape there is intimate — it wraps around you. Growing up in that environment trained my eye to look for subtlety, for the quiet shifts in tone and atmosphere that happen when light moves through moisture and tree cover. There's a gentleness to it that I think lives in the more muted, layered passages of my work.

Colorado is the opposite in almost every way. The sky is enormous and it dominates everything beneath it. The light is sharp and high and the weather is dramatic in a way that feels almost theatrical. When a storm moves across the front range or the sun drops behind the Rockies and sets the clouds on fire, it's not subtle at all — it demands your attention. What role does light play in your artistic language?

Light is everything to me. It's what I'm chasing in every single piece I make. But what I've learned over the years is that you can't paint light without understanding shadow — they define each other. The darkness in my paintings isn't empty space, it's what makes the light matter. Without that contrast, the luminosity I'm after just disappears. I'm constantly studying the way natural light behaves outdoors — the way it burns at the horizon, sits heavy under a storm, or finds a thin line of water in an otherwise dark landscape. That relationship between light and shadow is the whole conversation for me.

What do you hope viewers feel or reflect on when standing in front of your work?

SM

I want them to feel something they can't quite name at first. Not every painting is going to do that for every person — and that's okay. But when the right person stands in front of the right piece, something happens. They go quiet. They stay longer than they planned to. Maybe it reminds them of a place they've been, or a moment they haven't thought about in years, or just a feeling they didn't realize they were missing. If someone walks away from my work and carries a piece of it with them — even if they didn't buy it — that's enough for me. But if they find the one that sparks something deep enough to take home, that's everything.

What’s currently inspiring you, and what can we look forward to next?

SM

The sky has been a constant obsession for as long as I've been painting. The big open sky, the way weather moves across it, the light that happens at the edges of a storm or right before the sun drops below the horizon. I could paint skies for the rest of my life and never run out of something to say. But lately I've been looking down. Way down — at the ground, at riverbeds, at the worn smooth surfaces of stones that have been shaped by water and time over thousands of years. That quiet

Your name means “Friends of the Teche.” How did growing up along Bayou Teche shape your music and your connection as a band?

The bayou represents connection and tranquility and growing up on the bayou, whether our community was celebrating our music, our history, or, our quality of life. As a band growing up on Bayou Teche we were able to play at festivals on the banks of the Bayou, on a boat ride from each other’s houses, or gathering on the back porch playing our favorite songs. Now as we are getting older, the Bayou represents what home is, how

Cajun music is deeply tied to language and heritage. What does performing these songs mean to you?

Performing these songs is carrying on this vibrant legacy of generations of music that has been passed down. I feel like we get to add our special piece of the puzzle to this long extensive legacy by contributing original songs. We also pay homage to the musicians who came before us by playing traditional songs so we can stay true to our roots. In the spirit of storytelling our songs are written in our native language which plays a significant role in preserving a unique pillar of our culture.

You’ve shared Louisiana culture as far as Canada, even performing at Acadian historic sites. What was it like bringing your music back to those roots?

It felt like going home when we travelled up there. They even looked like us with the same last names. Hearing our songs on Canadian radio and hearing the audience singing back was a surreal experience.

You’ve been immersed in Cajun culture through family, university programs, and radio. How have those experiences influenced your sound?

Through the university and radio we were able to grow our musicianship with the sound we wanted through the other musicians in the area young ambassadors for our culture and made sure we were doing it correctly. Their generous mentorship allowed us to be more confident in who we are now. My dad always took me out to hear the Cajun bands and festivals. He taught me how to dance as early as I can remember.

You don’t have to be Cajun or know how to dance; that doesn’t matter because this experience is a part of you.

What’s next for Amis du Teche - new recordings, tours, or dream stages you hope to play?

We are working on our first music video. We are super excited and it embodies our personalities, the art in our community, and the “Joi de vivre” (Joy of life) our community represents. We are writing songs and working on our next album in the foreseeable future. Playing for the opening ceremony of the World Acadian Congress Festival in Nova Scotia was a huge dream stage in Canada, but going overseas and playing in Europe is the next step. Additionally, we continue to enjoy playing at home on our local stages at well-known Louisiana festivals such as New Orleans jazz & heritage festival, Festival International de Louisiane, and Festival Acadian & Creole

Castillo joined NBT as a trainee for the 2016/17 season and was promoted to apprentice in 2019. During his time there, he was fortunate to perform in many ballets including Ben Stevenson’s Dracula and Swan Lake, and James Canfield’s The Nutcracker. Castillo attended the Oklahoma City Ballet Summer Intensive in 2021 and was offered an apprenticeship for the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons. He was then promoted to the corps de ballet for the 2023/24 season and is thrilled to continue into his third season at Oklahoma City Ballet. With Oklahoma City Ballet, Castillo has performed in Jessica Lang’s To Familiar Spaces in Dream, Septime Webre’s ALICE (in wonderland), and Twyla Tharp's The Golden Section. Castillo has also performed in a “Tribute to Michael Jackson” at the Grand Theatre, in several collaborations with Cirque du Soleil, and as a guest artist for Microsoft.

Kesler Colton Originally from Park City, Utah, Kesler began his training at Park City Dance when he was seven years old. In his early teen years, he transitioned to Ballet West Academy in Salt Lake City where he was trained under the mentorship of Jeff Rogers. After three years in the Professional Training Division, he was promoted to trainee at 17 years old. The following year in 2022, Colton joined Oklahoma City Ballet's second company, OKCB II, for two seasons and joined the company as an apprentice for the 2024/25 Season. Central Texas born vocalist Georgia Parker and New Orleans’ own Hunter Burgamy play the music where Louisiana and Texas meets in the middle, authentic Western swing and country music a la Bob Wills, Freddy Powers, and Willie Nelson. Georgia Parker has held the Ameripolitan Awards for Western Swing (female) and Western Swing Band with Big Cedar Fever in 2019. Hunter Burgamy is a founding member of New Orleans’ beloved Secret Six Jazz Band, as well as leading his own band, The Garden of Joy. Georgia Parker & Hunter Burgamy’s debut six-song EP was released in February of 2025.

Joining Hunter & Georgia are two Colorado-based cowboy poets. JJ Steele is a native of the Northern Colorado livestock industry, and currently resides in Westcliffe, where he co-founded the annual Day of the Cowboy celebration. Lindy Simmons was rated among the top five female cowboy poets in 2025 by the International Western Music Association. She recites original cowboy poetry which she labels “storytelling in rhyme.” She claims all her stories of cowboy antics are mostly true. She also puts into poetry the history of the west. She has been a ranch wife in Colorado’s Mancos Valley all of her adult life.

She has traveled the rodeo road and makes award-winning biscuits on the family chuck-wagon. She released her CD entitled “Range Rhymes” in 2025. She served on the board of the Durango Cowboy Gathering for twenty-five years.

Open House by Billy Joe Miller On view throughout 2026 Accessed via the Anderson Trail A newly commissioned work, Open House is a new large-scale installation. The work takes the form of an open sanctuary built from a monumental wood cruck frame. Above, a canopy of colored glass tiles filters sunlight into shifting fields of color that fall onto stone below, creating an ever-changing environment of light and shadow. Designed as a porous and welcoming structure, Open House invites visitors to pause, gather, and inhabit a shared space of reflection within the natural landscape. The project draws inspiration from the writings of Bayo Akomolafe, whose reflections on sanctuary as a relational and emergent practice inform the work’s conception. Rather than a closed refuge, Open

House imagines sanctuary as something open, collective and continually unfolding.

Billy Joe Miller is an interdisciplinary artist working across mixed media, sculpture, installation, and site-responsive public projects. His practice centers on the transformation of space—reworking architecture, everyday objects, and landscapes to generate new forms of gathering and spatial encounter. Through shifts in structure, material, and scale, his work reimagines familiar environments, opening them to new uses, meanings, and relationships. His experiences working in hospice and healthcare settings, alongside his 2010 diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, sparked an interest in bridging healthcare and arts and in recognizing aesthetics as an essential component of healing environments.

These experiences inform his commitment to accessibility and to creating restorative spaces within civic and public contexts. Originally from San Diego, California, Miller now lives in the East Mountains of Albuquerque, New Mexico. His work has been supported by New Mexico Arts; Public Art Urban Enhancement ABQ; the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts; Meow Wolf; Bridge Projects; The Speranza Foundation; the City of Palm Desert; the City of Fraser; Artists at Work: Borderlands; and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Originating in Japan in 2010, Wind Phones provide a therapeutic, public space for sharing unsaid words. This wind phone, designed by Colorado Artist Jacob Shannon, will be available to the public throughout the year. The Town Overlook is located in the Red Butte Recreation Area, half of the way up to the Green Mountain Falls Skyspace.

by Jose Dávila Sallie Bush Community Center Jose Dávila received formal training in architecture at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudio Superiores de Occidente. Drawing on his training as an architect and his knowledge of art history, Dávila creates sculptural installations, photographic works and paintings that simultaneously emulate, critique, and pay homage to 20th century avant-garde art and architecture. Throughout his artistic career, Dávila’s practice has explored spatial occupation and the transitory nature of physical structures.

Referencing artists and architects from Luis Barragán and Mathias Goeritz to Josef Albers and Donald Judd, Dávila’s work investigates the expanded possibilities of the modernist movement through its translation, appropriation, and reinvention. Dávila is widely celebrated for his sculpture and public installation practice. In his sculptures, Dávila employs industrial and quotidian materials to make simultaneously humorous and critical reference to Modernist masterworks of art and design. In these works, materials are held in semiotic and structural tension – balanced both between high and low culture, and between permanence and collapse. Employing gravity and chance as materials, Dávila’s carefully arranged, and precariously balanced works expand the conventions of historical forms, and test the limits of the medium of sculpture. Jose Dávila currently lives and works in Guadalajara, Mexico.

We’ll start from the Wines of Colorado parking lot and ride on quieter paved roads through Cascade to Green Mountain Falls for a stop at the Green Box Arts Festival Office. Riders will have the option to stay on paved roads for a shorter ride and explore the event venues in Green Mountain Falls or continue riding on a partial gravel road up to Woodland Park. After a brief tour and refreshment break, we'll return to the Wines of Colorado parking area for about a 20-mile round trip ride and 1,000’ of elevation gain. Your own bicycle with rear lights and helmets are required. This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the ancient dye and playful art of shibori, where simple folding, binding, and clamping techniques transform ordinary fabric into rich, one-of-a-kind patterns. You’ll be guided through quick, easy-tolearn shibori methods and then dye your pieces directly in our working indigo vats—watching as striking blues emerge before your eyes. Joe LaFleur earned degrees in wildlife biology and communications from Colorado State University. For many years he was a research biologist for CSU, Colorado Division of Wildlife & Idaho Fish and Game.

LaFleur grew up in Colorado and has lived in Teller County since 2016.

Moribana Workshop: Ikebana, The Japanese Art of Flower Arranging with Heidi Almorosa Through this workshop, participants will discover and experience the beauty and pleasure of self-expression through ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging in which nature and humanity are brought together in harmony. Participants will learn moribana, one of the traditional styles of Ikebana. Instruction will be given to show the arranger how to create balance through the use of measurements, angles, and space. All materials are provided, and participants will walk away with flowers, a container, and a special ikebana tool.

Heidi Almosara is a former fine arts professor, a multidisciplinary artist, and a certified Sogetsu Ikebana teacher. Her artwork has been featured in over a hundred exhibitions both nationally and internationally.

In 2025, she opened her first studio located in downtown Colorado Springs called Yanagi Botanic Arts where she teaches Ikebana classes and creates Ikebanainspired artwork.

This class is a deep dive as we explore vanilla’s origins, and pay homage to the farmers in the world’s “Vanilla Belt.” Learning how farmers hand pollinate each plant, harvest, and cure the beans is inspiring. Then on we go to the sensory experience of vanilla beans! Dani and Lisa are looking forward to guiding you in making your own extract and paste.

Lisa Huizenga is a longtime resident of GMF since 1989. She started baking pies decades ago when her Aunt taught her the family recipe for Apple Pies. She hasn’t stopped baking pies since! Lisa has been teaching pie baking to Green Box fans for 10 years. Lisa’s passion is teaching pies to both her young charges when she was a pediatric Occupational Therapist, and now to bakers of all ages. Lisa found that her students came to her classes feeling that pies were intimidating. Seeing her pie students with big smiles, having a ton of fun, and leaving with a beautiful pie that they are so proud of, “floats her boat.” She loves communing with friends old and new over pie.

Dani Hainds is a 36 year resident of Green Mountain Falls! In that time, as secretary at Ute Pass Elementary, she nurtured the students of the Ute Pass region for 28 years. She continues to nurture by helping to create and maintain the Green Mountain Falls Triangle garden and teaching vanilla and pie making classes with her “partner in crime” Lisa Huizenga. Dani is passionate about her beloved Green Mountain Falls and shares her gifts as a member of the town’s Parks, Recreation, and Trails Committee. Dani tries to do her part to make a kinder, beautiful and even tastier world!

Campers will learn from award winning puppeteer Katy Williams, who brings her expertise, artistry, and deep commitment to safety to every step of the process. He is a native of Lafayette, Louisiana. Wilkins’ creative research and projects are rooted in the interconnections of American contemporary performance, cultural history, and identities of Black men.

He has choreographed over 60 works. He is Chair and a Professor of Dance at Florida State University, and a member of the National Board of Directors of the American College Dance Association for the Northwest Region. Helanius conducted his residency at Green Box in two parts, two weeks in the Autumn of 2025, and another two weeks in February 2026. His residency culminated in a fully-produced performance of his ongoing and always shifting “dance-quilt” called, The Conversation Series: Stitching the Geopolitical Quilt to Re-Body Belonging.

Hannah Garner & 2nd Best Dance Company DAN CE 2nd Best Dance Company creates, performs, and teaches physically rigorous, sometimes virtuosic, almost always slapstick dance-plays.

Hannah Garner, 2nd Best’s Artistic Director, was named a 2025 Princess Grace Award recipient in Choreography and ‘25 to Watch’

by Dance Magazine, and is a NYC based dancer/choreographer making work that “tackles topics like death and queer identity through rigorous, inventive movement and wit” (Dance Magazine).

Hannah and the rest of the company spent the month of March in residence, creating and developing work for their next dance-play.

Ziba Rajabi (b. Tehran, Iran) received her MFA from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and her BFA from Sooreh University, Tehran, Iran. Her primary

practice is focused on painting, drawing, and fabric-based installation. She is the

recipient of the DAG Prize for Visual Arts, Jerome Foundation Early-Career Artists

Fellowship, and the Artist 360 Grant. Her work revolves around reconciling her relationship with two distinct spaces: where she comes from and where she

resides now. Utilizing an expanded painting practice, she investigates the politics,

privileges, and hierarchies surrounding her complex reality. Responding to a sense of

a growing distance from cultural roots, she sources Persian language and architecture to create fiber-based installations and paintings that operate as a sentimental

refuge and, through personal tales, explore

the collective experiences of displacement/ distance. The result of her residency at

Green Box in May can be viewed inside the Lakeview Terrace building.

Cory Feder EMBRO ID ER ED ART Cory Feder (b. 1993, Greensboro, NC) is a multidisciplinary artist working across Colcha, Inspired by the childlike perception of endless wonder, her work lingers in the interplay of the natural world, folklore and the divine. During her residency in May, Cory explored the storytelling of Asian history in Colorado and New Mexico through the regional tradition of Colcha embroidery. Cory was raised in Denver, CO, received her BFA from School of the Art Institute of Chicago and currently lives and works in Santa Fe, NM.

Danny Sherrard, Rocky Duval & Doug Balliett M USI C PERFORMA NCE Danny Sherrard and Rocky Duval met while serving on the Youth Speaks Seattle Advisory Board in 2006. For the last twenty years, they have journeyed around the world, collecting accolades and honors for their musical and poetic prowess, only to find one another again in this collaboration of auditory magic. Rocky and Danny are joined by composer Doug Balliett — who will be utilizing their Green Box residency time in August to create an evening length performance of The Epic of Gilgamesh that weaves humankind’s oldest epic together with classical vocals and Sumerian hymnody. Recent works and awards include the release of Sherrard’s poetry collection Cast Your Eyes like Riverstones into the Exquisite Dark (Write Bloody, 2025), Balliett’s tenure as Composer in residence at the Festival dans les Jardins de William Christie (2014-2024), and the premiere of Duval’s musical play, Hildegard, Reborn at Lincoln Center (2024). The trio hold deep faith in the power of historically informed performance and strive to connect audiences both to our distant past as well as to each other here and now through story, music, and myth.

Liberty Styles SOLO PERFORMA NCE

Jungmin Cha D IGITAL ART Jungmin Cha, also known as Chamin, is a Korean artist working primarily with digital media, video, and 3D processes. Her practice explores gaps between virtual systems and lived reality, focusing on observation, distance, and non-intervention. Drawing from animation, found footage, and computational structures, she examines how belief, fate, and control are constructed in contemporary life. During her residency at Green Box this November, Jungmin will extend her practice to encompass elements of nature, such as weather, water & erosion.

Liberty Styles creates subversive worlds through tap dance, theater and electronic music. Based in NYC, Liberty is an avid beatmaker and tap dancer.

For 12 years Liberty has been instrumental in building and growing DIY communities related to dance and electronic music. Also an emerging choreographer, Liberty will develop a new solo performance grounded in the ideas of collage and performativity while in residence at Green Box this Autumn. Liberty will layer tap dance, electronic sound, and character to create worlds that shift between abstraction and story. Liberty will use the residency to synthesize these threads into a portable performance that can travel beyond Green Box.
