JOE NALL 2014 IT’S HUGE! IT’S FUN! IT’S BLESSED!
T
he Joe Nall event, in Greenville, SC, is blessed! It’s blessed by Pat Hartness’ unmeasurable generosity, the fantastic airfield, the organizers, the workers, and most certainly by Joe Nall’s legacy. The Joe Nall is a special event; so many modelers enjoy the camaraderie that is unique to this immense gathering for RC devotees. Consider that 1,484 pilots registered
6
for the 2014 event, and that 10,000 spectators came to watch the proceedings, and you’ll begin to get a sense of the blessing that Joe Nall’s legacy has bestowed on this extravaganza. That is why this magazine is dedicating the entire issue to the 2014 Joe Nall. This special edition of RC-SF is a compilation of photos from three people: the editorin-chief, Robert Vest, and Gary Rosier.

PowerBox Systems brought their jet teams over from Germany. Here you see their L-39 Albatross aircraft doing a formation flyby for the crowd during the demos.
2
Tim Stadler, one of the other team PowerBox Systems members, was flying this EMHW 2.68-meter wingspan Challenger II from emhw.de.
3
This gazebo is where the action takes place on the main flight line. It’s also where you’ll find many of the vendors’ tents and team pilots during the flight demos.
4
Pat Hartness is the individual who renamed the event after his late friend Joe Nall. He is also the former owner of the airfield prior it being donated to the club.
5
This is the business end of Tony Russo’s 3.3-meter Composite ARF Yak 54. It’s running a DA 250 four-stroke engine that turns a Mejzlik 32x18 carbon fiber propeller.
6
Andrew Jesky was doing the demo flights on the JR X-bus equipped Yak. He tells us the engine provides power response very similar to that of a full-scale airplane.
7
This Moki radial is baffled to get the cooling air flowing over the cylinders of the engine. Check out the functional fourblade propeller on this P-47 too.
8
From left to right it’s Tony Russo, Dave Johnson (DA owner) and Andrew Jesky. Andrew says the 250 engine gives the airplane the control feel of a full-scale.
9
Hidden under that Top Kick hat is James Malek. He has been a flight line boss for years. The bosses make the line move along smoothly and safely.

JOE NALL PHOTO ESSAY YOU JUST WANT TO CAPTURE THE ACTION BY ROBERT VEST
W
hile attending the Joe Nall 2014 event this year, I had the opportunity to meet Wil Byers (editor-in-chief) while shooting photos at the main flight-line area. We got to chatting about the fact that he was dedicating the entire magazine to the Joe Nall 2014. As a result, he asked me to supply some photos for this special edition, which I am happily contributing my content to. Unfortunately, I was focused on shooting photos and not getting captions for all the photos, so we’re doing the best we can to caption all the photos so you understand the action that was happening as they

were being taken. Wil and I agree that the important thing is for you to see is the aircraft and the people that make the Joe Nall what it is each year. It’s why this event has turned into a mega happening that died-in-the-wool RC enthusiasts don’t want to miss. Moreover, Joe Nall is truly about the people who attend and how much fun they have interacting with each other. So, it is my pleasure to share my images with you via the pages of this magazine. I hope that you will feel my excitement at being there to witness firsthand all the aicraft that were flown and shown.
1
Everyone enjoys watching the nonstop action of the noontime demonstrations!
2
Pat Hartness is shown here as one of the thousands of spectators that enjoy watching the shows.
3
This photo needs no description. The Joe Nall is branded by its site, the Triple Tree Aerodrome.
4
The flight line bosses are not as tough as they look in this photo, but they do keep the event safe and moving along spritely.
5
RB Kincaid’s dog is part of the action, and even though he’s not going anywhere fast, he enjoys the action too!

My father is the man who gave me the love of aviation, so he and I still pal around to events together. rc-sportflyer.tumblr.com

This Fokker E.III Eindecker 90 is built from a Balsa USA kit. It is 1/4-scale and flies on an 80-in. wingspan.
2
I believe this Corsair was built from a Meister kit. It has a 100-in. wingspan and uses a gas-powered engine.
3
This P-40 Warhawk was built from a Top Flite kit. It is designed for a 55-cc gas-powered engine.
4
AMA Hall of Famer Jerry Smith calls the Joe Nall home for most of the week-long event.
5
This is a Hangar 9 P-47D1 60-cc ARF. It had its tail feathers redone in the checkboard color scheme.
6
This giant-scale AT-6 Texan was extremely well detailed. If you have info on it, please share at rc-sf.com.
7
Again, this Grumman F6F Hellcat was detailed to match the full-scale, including exhaust streaking.

IT’S AN AIRPLANE PARTY THAT LASTS A WEEK
I 1
Let me tell you, the organizers at Joe Nall Week really throw out the red carpet for aviation enthusiasts.
2
Banners such as this one line the fence from end to end. The event is one that really welcomes enthusiasts!
3
The Spartan that resides in the airfield’s hangar has the Triple Tree Aerodrome logo painted on its side.
4
Pat Hartness’ Spartan is a shining example of what executive aircraft used to be in days gone by.
5
Pat Hartness’ Stearman is completely restored, and is also hangared on the Woodruff airfield.
6
This 3D Hobby Shop Slick 540 is about to go up for a little action over the lake that adjoins the 3D flight line.
7
It was time for a little tail dunking with the 3D Hobby Shop Slick 540 — it got wet, but wasn’t dunked deep.
8
Hovering was a standard part of the fun at the 3D flight line. Everyone was standing their airplanes on end!

RC SPORT FLYER . AUGUST 2014
’m new to RC airplanes. As a matter of fact, I don’t yet have a model to fly. I simply attended the Joe Nall event to see what it was about and to see the aircraft that would be flown. So, I packed up my camping gear and drove from Florida to Greenville, SC to spend the week. I’m beyond glad that I did, because Joe Nall is a huge extravaganza, with a festive, party atmosphere that lasts throughout the week, even with a few showers trying to spoil the party — NOT! Like Robert Vest, I met Wil at the event. I approached him about sharing some of my photos. He was
more than pleased to get another photographer’s images, probably because they represent a different perspective from those that he was shooting. I was excited to have the opportunity to get my photos in front all the readers of this magazine. Before you peruse my photos, you must know that this event is the Oshkosh of model aviation. However, it is an event where you can get up close and personal with the pilots, the aircraft, and the organizers. The Joe Nall was also a place where I got to make many new friends that I plan to see at many Joe Nall events in years to come.

Team 3D Hobby Shop had a huge group of great pilots representing them on the airfield.
3
I loved watching the 3D pilots drive their models straight down the runway’s centerline in knife-edge.
5
Randy Nickler was flying this Kroma 180 gas-powered 3D Hobby Shop Extra 300.
2
A team pilot, Matt Dunkel, from 3DRCforums.com was there standing his airplane on its tail.
4
A number of the pilots got into flying their models in formation, as you can see here.
6
Michael Farlow put on an excellent 3D show for the spectators flying this Pilot RC Yak 54.

This Futura jet is by Tomahawk models. Its wingspan is 1.9 meters and is electric powered.
8
Then things went wrong and the model ended up crashing. Even so, it can still be rebuilt.
12
Here is another Futura coming in for a landing. I believe this one was using turbine engine, however.

Look at the rudder deflection on this Extreme Flight MSX-EXP as it flies a knife-edge pass down the runway!

The Eurosport 3D is by Composite ARF. It’s captured here just before it rotates for takeoff. Nice model!

You wanna know how some of the models get transported from flight line to flight line?
