TERM OVERVIEW

PRE-KINDER TERM 3 2026

Welcome back to another exciting term of growth and discovery. We are looking forward to continuing our playbased learning journey, where children’s curiosity, creativity and interests guide many of our learning experiences. This term, we will continue to provide a balance of purposeful play and intentional teaching to support each child’s social, emotional, physical and cognitive development.

OUR APPROACHES TO LEARNING FOR TERM 3

In Term 3, our approach to learning continues to focus on fostering curiosity, confidence and a genuine love of learning This term we will place a strong focus on developing resilience and problem-solving skills. Children will be encouraged to persevere when faced with challenges, try different strategies “come up with a plan” and understand mistakes are a part of learning. Our learning environment will continue to provide opportunities to develop independence, strengthen friendships and engage in meaningful hands-on learning.

OUR PRE-KINDER GOALS FOR TERM 3

• To build collaborative learning skills by encouraging children to work together, take turns and listen to others.

• To continue to develop fine motor and gross motor skills, particularly bilateral skills, core strength and coordination.

• To encourage children to try new challenges and persist in a task.

PREKINDER - TERM 3

KLA OVERVIEW

ENGLISH

Our Pre-Lit Program will continue to support the development of children’s early literacy skills through engaging experiences. The children are thoroughly enjoying our Letterland program. This term we will continue to strengthen children’s phonological awareness by exploring rhyming words, clapping and segmenting words. We will also continue to develop their vocabulary, expressive language and receptive language through shared reading, storytelling and playbased learning.

SCIENCE

Science is naturally embedded throughout our preschool program as children explore, investigate and make sense of the world around them. This term we are excited to celebrate National Science Week with a fun range of engaging experiments that will spark curiosity and inspire a love of discovery.

We are also hoping that Professor Squigglebottom will make a special.

MATHEMATICS

This term we will continue to build on children’s growing mathematical understanding through hands-on playbased learning experiences. We will strengthen their knowledge of numbers by exploring how numerals represent an amount and one-to-one correspondence The children will explore recognising and creating their own repeated patterns and continue to explore colours and shapes and mathematical language through their play.

HSIE

This term we will continue to build on the children’s sense of belonging, identity and connection to their classroom and the wider school community. Through our weekly theme topics, the children will continue to develop an understanding of themselves, others and the world around them.

VISUAL ARTS

Students will have the opportunity to complete a number of artworks linking with weekly Pre-Kinder themes. They will create artworks using tissue paper, bubble wrap, cotton wool, paint, recycled materials, paddle pop sticks and water.

PERFORMING ARTS

Students will learn about themselves and the world around them through music. They will explore their speaking and singing voices through songs, chants, and vocal play, respond to musical elements through movement, and participate in finger plays, action songs, circle games, and instrument activities. Learning experiences will connect with themes being explored in the Pre-K classroom throughout the term.

PREKINDER - TERM 3

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

PreKinder work on SeeSaw in relation to the weekly themes.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Through songs and storytelling, Pre K will explore some of the foundational stories in the bible. We take time to think about what the morals might be in each story, and we practice listening to each other.

PDHPE

Students will continue to develop locomotor skills such as running, jumping, hopping, and galloping. In addition, we will continue to explore ball skills such as catching, throwing, kicking, underarm rolling and striking. Students will be given opportunities to perform and analyse various situations that utilise these fundamental movement skills and investigate ways of performing the above skills individually and as part of a group.

LIBRARY

In line with this year’s Book Week theme, ‘Symphony of Stories’, students will explore how stories come together like music. Each week, we’ll enjoy a new story celebrating the magic of words and connection.

Each session will also include borrowing time, encouraging students to choose a book by an author linked to their weekly letter of study (where possible).

WELLBEING

We will continue to make social interactions our focus. Giving the children language and tools to cope in a variety of social situations. The valued characters and Bluey will be there to help us deliver and develop these skills.

Using the framework from URSTRONG we will learn about the friend-o-meter and what the coloured zones mean and how to move between them.

PREKINDER - TERM 3

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

• Pre-K hours

Doors will open 8:40am ready to start our day. Please sign your child in each day. Pre-K ends 3:00pm. If your child is attending Gowrie they will move to that space.

• Library Days: Every Tuesday and Friday. Please pack a library bag.

• PE Days: Every Tuesday and Friday. Please wear the play-based uniform and joggers.

• Information: Please check your information pockets and the notice board in the foyer on a regular basis.

• Drink bottle: We encourage students to drink water regularly at school. Please ensure they pack their own drink bottle every day.

• Clothing As we move into the cooler months, please make sure your child has appropriate clothing for the weather conditions. In Term 2 and 3 just pack a coat everyday just to be sure. Even if the weather is cold, it is important we get outside to play.

• Spare clothes: Please ensure your child always has a change of clothes in their bags Please remember to bring a raincoat and gumboots so the children can enjoy outdoor play no matter what the weather.

COMMUNICATION WITH THE SCHOOL

Open and honest communication between parents and Pre-Kinder teachers is essential to supporting each child’s learning and wellbeing. We value strong partnerships with families and encourage parents to share information, ask questions, and celebrate successes with us. On a day-to-day basis, parents have regular contact with the Pre-Kinder staff to share updates or ask questions. If a matter requires more time or a deeper discussion, a longer meeting can be arranged

Dear Parents,

We trust you and your family have enjoyed a relaxing holiday. We are very much looking forward to welcoming the children back to school for another busy term of learning. There are several exciting plans for the term, including our 100 days of school celebration, the commencement of our swimming program, book week and an excursion to Cook Park. Please monitor The Hub for further details.

SCIENCE

Students will explore how different shapes and materials affect the way objects move through hands-on experiments and observations. They will then use what they have learned to design and create a simple object that meets a specific purpose or need.

VISUAL ARTS

Students will appreciate that artists make artworks and will begin to describe some aspects of artworks. Art appreciating will focus on the work of Paul Klee. Students will create an abstract piece of art inspired by Klee, using regular and irregular shapes.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

This term we will be exploring Parables. These are ethical stories Jesus told to help the community understand how to live in a supportive community. The parables we will explore are: The Parable of the Mustard Seed, The Good Shepherd, The Good Samaritan, The Holy Family, The Sower, and The Pearl of Great Worth.

MATHEMATICS

The following topics will be covered in Term 3:

• Addition and subtraction

• Numbers to 30

• Mass

• Area

• Length and fractions

• 3D space

• Forming groups

We will focus on developing these skills through explicit teaching and hands on lessons using manipulatives.

HSIE

Geography – People Live in Places

Key Inquiry Questions: What are places like? What makes a place special? How can we look after the places we live in?

PERFORMING ARTS

Students will continue exploring speaking and singing voices through songs, chants, and vocal activities. Students will explore beat and rhythm, develop pitch awareness using body placement and solfa hand signs, and transfer simple patterns onto the musical stave. They will explore a range movement activities as well as choral pieces including songs for the K-2 Nativity play.

LIBRARY

This term in Library, students will engage with texts selected from the 2026 CBCA shortlist. Each week, they will explore a different text, examining themes, character development, language, and the writing styles of various authors. Weekly sessions will also include time for borrowing. The unit aims to introduce students to a variety of literature and foster a lifelong enjoyment of reading.

KINDERGARTEN - TERM 3

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

Mrs Fatai

Students will design a 3D waterpark in Minecraft Education. They will learn to navigate and build on this platform and share their work at the Term 3 Technology Showcase.

PDHPE

Students in PDH will be focusing on identity, health and wellbeing. They will be focusing on how caring for the body improves health and wellbeing. This includes healthy eating, active movement, appropriate hygiene habits and understanding key body organs.

In PE students will continue developing their fundamental movement skills. They will focus on following rules in team games and play fairly in different activities.

COMMUNICATION WITH THE SCHOOL

Diaries are for students and teachers to record goals and events and to teach students how to organise themselves. Students need to have their diary with them every day.

YEAR 1 - TERM 3

Dear Year 1 Families,

Welcome back to Term 3. I hope families enjoyed a restful and refreshing winter break. The term ahead promises to be a busy and rewarding one, with a comprehensive range of academic, sporting, cultural and co-curricular opportunities designed to nurture the growth and development of every student.

Rehearsals for the Nativity play will commence this term with students learning songs and dances in readiness for a busy Term 4 schedule of events.

Term 3 offers Year 1 students many contextual learning opportunities with learning about the ‘History of KWS’ and Science discoveries about light and sound.

As the weather is cold, please pack coats, gloves and hats or beanies that are part of the JS uniform. The playground is fun to share with friends even on a cold and chilly Orange day.

Reading groups continues to be a much-loved activity during the Year 1 learning week. Term 3 will see the class build their sound recognition, develop recall of high frequency words, reading fluency and develop skills in comprehension and vocabulary. Students participate in a variety of directed and independent reading activities for 30 minutes. This is valuable learning time for the week.

HOME LEARNING

Each week, the Home Learning folder will arrive home on Monday and is due back to school on Friday. The students are to complete the spelling, vocabulary and maths pages of their Homework Activity book. A Home Reading Diary will be included to record the home reading students have completed each week. At the back of this book are some extra activities along with the tricky words lists that will be explicitly taught during the term. It is recommended that your child review sets 1-8 (revision) and sets 9-11 (new learning term 3).

HOME READING

Home reading is an opportunity for your children to share what they have learnt at school. All readers sent home are levelled. Your child will receive a book that has been assessed on their ability and results from reading assessments completed at school. Students will take home books that ensure they are independent in their reading. Students have access to the MultiLit e-Library. Reading is encouraged for this site. Students have a login in the back of their diaries. New books will be allocated to students this term.

English

This unit covers-

- Instruction of phonemes, diagraphs, trigraphs including oral and written reviews.

- Learning and reading tricky words

- Grammar- nouns, verbs, homophones and adjectives.

- Storybook lessons where each session had a particular focus: comprehension, visualisation and story summarising, oral expression, vocabulary work, creative writing.

- Sentence writing, imaginative writing, Informative writing.

MATHEMATICS

Your child will be working through hands on learning activities around the syllabus strands Working Mathematically, Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics and Probability.

Learning focus for Term 3 will include: a daily review of basic skills.

Weeks 1-2 – Time- tell time to the hour and half hour on an analogue clock. Mass-Investigate mass using an equal-arm balance

Weeks 3- Whole number- Represent the structure of groups of ten in whole numbers, use counting sequences of ones and tens flexibly

Week 4-Position- Follow directions to familiar locations

Week 5- 6-Addition and subtraction

Week 7-8-Forming Groups-Model and use equal groups of objects to represent multiplication, Area: Indirectly compare area: Measure areas using uniform informal units, compare rectangular areas using uniform square units of an appropriate size in rows and columns

Week 9- Length- Compare lengths using uniform informal units

Week 10- Chance and Data- Identify and describe possible outcomes and describe activities that involve chance.

YEAR 1 - TERM 3

SCIENCE- HEAR IT, SEE IT, EXPLORING LIGHT AND SOUND

In this unit, students will discover how light and sound travel and interact with different materials, including air, water, and solids. They will also investigate how materials affect light through reflection, refraction, dispersion, and absorption. Students will examine a range of musical instruments, including those used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, to understand how vibrations create and carry sound and how the pitch and volume of sound can be altered. Using the design process, students will create a light maze or a musical instrument of their own design.

VISUAL ARTS

Year 1 will appreciate the artwork of Wassily Kandinsky, creating their own artwork incorporating concentric circles. Students will continue to build on their knowledge and skills, with a focus on line, shape and colour. They will learn about ombre and silhouettes in art.

HSIE-HISTORY – THE HISTORY OF KWS

In this unit students will learn the history of significant people and buildings that are part of the Kinross Wolaroi School community and what it reveals about the past. They will develop an understanding of the importance today of these historical sites of cultural or spiritual significance. Students will gain knowledge about the impact of changing technology on people's lives.

WELLBEING

Students are reminded of the Kinross Wolaroi expectations and routines. A strong focus is placed on fostering a warm and inclusive sense of belonging within the classroom, with particular emphasis on the School Value of Respect. Through learning about friendships, students revisit whole-school language and develop respectful ways to communicate, cooperate and resolve challenges, adding practical strategies to their wellbeing toolbox.

PERFORMING ARTS

Students will learn that sound is a form of energy produced by sound sources all around us. They will explore how vibrations create sound waves and investigate how different instruments produce sound. Through hands-on experiences, students will design and create their own junk instruments, experimenting with materials and methods to discover how vibrations make sound and how pitch and volume can be changed.

They will explore a range of choral pieces including songs for the K-2 Nativity play.

PDHPE

Students in PDH will be focusing on identity, health and wellbeing. They will be focusing on responsible choices to improve their own health and wellbeing. In PE students will continue to develop their fundamental movement skills. The focus for Term 3 will be to develop strategies to play fairly withing a team environment.

TERM 3 2026

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome back to Term 3. We hope you enjoyed a relaxing break and are ready for another exciting term of learning. This term, students will explore a range of new concepts and topics across the curriculum while continuing to strengthen the skills and knowledge developed throughout the first half of the year. We look forward to supporting each student's growth and celebrating their achievements along the way.

This term, students will continue to develop their reading, writing and mathematical skills while exploring a range of engaging new learning experiences. Through rich texts, they will build vocabulary and strengthen the connection between reading and writing. In Mathematics, students will consolidate key concepts and apply their understanding of positional language and mapping skills through a GPS treasure hunt at a local park. In Science, we will investigate forces and magnets through hands-on experiments, while Geography will focus on our place in the world and our connections to people and places beyond our local community. In Wellbeing, students will continue to build on the friendship and relationship skills introduced through the URSTRONG program, developing strategies to communicate effectively, resolve conflicts and maintain positive relationships.

YEAR 2 - TERM 3

HOME LEARNING

Home Learning will continue to be distributed every Monday in a plastic folder to complete throughout the week. Students will be expected to return their Home Learning folder every Friday for marking as well as their home reader

Across KWS, students are strongly encouraged to participate in Home Learning to support and reinforce their learning. If there are any difficulties completing the tasks, please contact your child’s classroom teacher so we can provide support.

YEAR 2 - TERM 3

KLA OVERVIEW

ENGLISH

Year 2 continue English investigations using the InitiaLit program as our base of inquiry. Key investigations include:

• Construction and investigation of informative text types

• Reading to make meaning through focusing on the comprehension strategies of inferring, finding the main idea and summarising

• Growing grammar: conjunctions, verbs, speech marks, noun groups

• Strengthening spelling: compound words, prefixes, silent letters, contractions, suffixes, consonant plus ‘le’, morphographs review

SCIENCE

In Science this term, students will investigate forces and magnets through a range of hands-on activities and experiments. They will explore how pushes and pulls affect the movement of objects, identify different types of forces in everyday life and discover how magnets attract and repel. Students will develop their scientific inquiry skills by making predictions, conducting investigations and recording their observations.

VISUAL ARTS

Art appreciating will focus on the work of Claude Monet. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the art movement Impressionism and create an artwork in this style. They will appreciate that artists make artworks and will begin to describe some aspects of artworks.

MATHEMATICS

Making contextual links to learning, the following topics will be covered in Term 3:

Weeks 1 and 2: mass

Week 3: representing whole number

Week 4: Position

Weeks 5 and 6: combining and separating properties

Weeks 7 and 8: forming groups

Weeks 9 and 10: length and chance

Through the structure of daily reviews at the beginning of all maths learning, students will continue to build mathematical fluency. A major focus in Term 3 is counting backwards, identifying the number 10 before and 10 after with given three-digit numbers and successfully solving word problems.

GEOGRAPHY

Geographical inquiry this term focuses on Australia’s location,continents, oceans and neighbouring countries. Throughout this unit, students will have the opportunity to connect with learning peers on the international school circuit through structured, teacher-led platforms. Students will also develop their research skills in groups using ICT.

PERFORMING ARTS

Students will sing and explore a range of American folk songs and respond to classical music inspired by the Wild West. They will learn and perform a variety of circle and barn dances, developing confidence in movement and group participation. Throughout the unit, students will continue to strengthen their rhythmic and melodic awareness through singing, listening, and a range of aural activities.

They will explore a range of choral pieces including songs for the K-2 Nativity play.

YEAR 2 - TERM 3

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

Year 2 students will develop block coding skills using the OzoBlockly platform. The final challenge will be to code their Ozobot for bowling, attempting to knock downs mini bowling pins.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

This term we will be exploring Parables. These are ethical stories Jesus told to help the community understand how to live in a supportive community. The parables we will explore are: The Parable of the Mustard seed, The Good Shepherd, The Good Samaritan, The Holy Family, The Sower, and The Pearl of great worth.

WELLBEING

Year 2 will continue to use the URStrong Program to strengthen our appreciation and understanding that healthy friendships are built on trust and respect.

COMMUNICATION WITH THE SCHOOL

PDHPE

Students in PDH will be focusing on respectful relationships and how it enhances their personal safety. They will also develop the appropriate choices and actions to deal with a range of situations. In PE students will continue to developing their fundamental movement skills. The focus for Term 3 will be to develop strategies to play fairly withing a team environment.

Each week, students will engage with a different text, examining themes, characterisation, language features, and the distinctive writing styles of each author. Sessions will also include dedicated time for borrowing.

Welcome to Term 3! We would like to extend a warm welcome back to families as we commence Term 3. We hope you have had a relaxing holiday. We are now halfway through the school year, and we have planned an exciting term ahead. In addition to everyday learning opportunities in the classroom, we look forward to Eisteddfods, drama production, HICES athletics for some students and an exciting excursion for all (details to come!).

HOME LEARNING

Students are encouraged to tailor home learning to complement their learning goals. Reading regularly is encouraged. The opportunity to read out loud to a household member provides your child with the chance to read with expression and increase fluency. This term, Home Learning will continue to have the same focus areas of Term 1. There will be tasks related to English (spelling, comprehension and reading), Maths (maths mentals and review of content covered in class) and other project-based learning tasks.

YEAR 3 - TERM 3

KLA OVERVIEW

ENGLISH

In Term 3, students explore a range of engaging texts to identify key themes and ideas, with a focus on how authors communicate a clear message. Inspired by influential role models in these texts, students will develop their own opinions and learn how to express them through persuasive writing and speaking. They will create and present persuasive texts that encourage others to think in a particular way about a topic or person they admire.

Students will be focusing on their sentence types and sentence structures while refining their writing and spelling.

SCIENCE

Students will be completing a semester study of our cosmic world. This unit helps students understand the Sun’s important role as the centre of our solar system and Earth’s main source of energy. Students will explore how the Earth moves around the Sun, learning that this takes just over 365 days, and investigate how we use energy from the Sun in everyday life. They will use a range of models and digital tools to learn about the solar system, including how gravity keeps planets in orbit. Students will explore the life and music of Ludwig van Beethoven. They will listen to and respond to his famous compositions, identify instruments and ensembles aurally, and recognise, read and perform musical themes from his works.

WELLBEING

In Term 3, students explore the Wellbeing pillar of Belonging. At Kinross Wolaroi School, belonging means feeling connected, valued and included within the school community. In this unit, students will explore what it means to respect others, celebrate diversity and appreciate different perspectives. They will reflect on how their own strengths contribute to a positive and supportive environment and learn how to work collaboratively and show care for others. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

PDHPE

In PDHPE this term students will be looking at taking actions to stay safe. Students will recognise signs that may indicate they themselves or others are in an unsafe situation. They will rehearse and practice responses and protective strategies to promote safety in a range of situations.

Students in PE will develop kicking skills through a range of teamwork games. Year 3 will continue focusing on fair and inclusive play.

LIBRARY

This term, students will explore the CBCA 2026 Book Week theme, “Symphony of Stories,” through shortlisted titles, examining a range of genres and storytelling techniques. They will also build research skills by investigating their chosen role model and learn to navigate the library system. Each lesson includes time for borrowing to encourage independent reading.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

Students will design their own Year 3 school camp. They will investigate features of camps and then create camp timetables, menus and brochures. Groups will create posters and brochures in Canva, and use Minecraft Education to develop 3D representation of their camp, as well as filming an advertisement for their camp using iMovie.

Welcome back to Term 3. We hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday and are returning feeling refreshed and ready for a busy and rewarding term ahead. Throughout Term 3, our focus will be on providing rich, engaging and meaningful learning experiences, both within the classroom and through connections with the wider school community. We aim to continue building curiosity, independence and confidence in all learners.

We will continue to encourage students to actively demonstrate our school values of Respect, Inclusiveness, Courage, Commitment and Resilience in their daily actions. These values remain central to fostering a positive, supportive and inclusive classroom environment where every student feels safe, valued and motivated to learn.

Building on the strong foundations established in Term 1, students will extend their learning across all key areas. We were particularly proud of the way students embraced challenges last term, showing persistence and a willingness to take on more complex tasks. This term, we will continue to support each student to take ownership of their learning, set goals and strive for personal growth.

A highlight of the term will be the upcoming Athletics Carnival, where students will have the opportunity to demonstrate teamwork, sportsmanship and perseverance. This event provides a wonderful extension of our PDH learning, encouraging active participation and a healthy, positive attitude towards physical activity. ENGLISH

We continue daily fluency sessions that support students in strengthening their reading and comprehension skills through engagement with a variety of meaningful texts, while handwriting sessions will focus on progressing towards the ‘NSW Foundation Cursive’ style, including weekly lessons on correct pencil grip, posture and composition. In addition, three spelling lessons each week will continue to build students’ understanding of spelling rules and patterns.

Students will study persuasive devices through an indepth analysis of the text ‘Ned Kelly and the Green Sash’. These devices will be implemented by creating a persuasive speech on ‘How to make KWS more sustainable’. This will integrate with Geography focusing on sustainability issues within the school.

Students will also study poetry through an in-depth analysis of ‘Bindi’ and ‘Fire’. Through this unit, they will learn figurative language techniques and use them to create, publish and perform their own poems.

SCIENCE

Students will explore how natural forces shape Earth’s surface, from the impact of wind, water, and living organisms on weathering rocks to dramatic changes caused by earthquakes and volcanoes. They will investigate Earth’s internal structure and observe how moving water contributes to erosion. Through Aboriginal Dreaming and Torres Strait Islander Legends, students will also gain cultural insights into landscape formation.

MATHEMATICS

This term students start APSMO problem solving lessons each week and engage in a range of hands-on learning activities starting with length and. Daily revision will be an important part of each lesson, helping students strengthen number sense, recall and essential mathematical skills across all areas of the syllabus. A strong emphasis will be placed on verbal reasoning and mathematical justification, encouraging students to explain how they arrived at an answer rather than focusing solely on correctness. Our focus this term in Geography is on the role each individual plays in leading a sustainable life. VISUAL ARTS

Year 4 will be studying a unit on non-traditional portraiture this term. They will Interpret and discuss works from the NGV Collection which depict animals to inspire their own expression of ideas and use of materials and techniques. Year 4 will also practise their composition skills by using cropping and focal points to create drama as well as develop their painting skills by mixing colour and using brushstrokes to create texture and movement.

WELLBEING

Students will learn to build positive, supportive, respectful and safe relationships with peers and staff. Students will be encouraged to explore their roles and responsibilities within these interactions both in person and online. They will develop an appreciation for diversity and accept all cultures, backgrounds and beliefs. We hope all families have enjoyed a safe, healthy and restful holiday break, filled with quality time together. As we commence Term 3, it has been a pleasure to welcome students back with such evident energy, enthusiasm and readiness to engage in learning. Their positive return reaffirms our commitment to providing a nurturing and vibrant school community where every child feels a sense of belonging and purpose.

Year 5 is especially excited to welcome Eleanor Mendonca to our Year 5 community. We are delighted to have Eleanor join us and know she will be warmly embraced by her peers as she settles into life at Kinross Wolaroi School.

As students enter the final semester of Year 5, there will be an increasing focus on leadership, responsibility and service to others as they prepare for the transition into Year 6. Building on the themes explored through our study of Wonder by R.J. Palacio in Term 2, students will continue to reflect on the importance of empathy, inclusion and choosing kindness in their daily interactions. Throughout the term, students will be encouraged to demonstrate servant leadership by contributing positively to the school community, taking pride in the presentation of their work, wearing their uniform with pride and respect, and helping to maintain a welcoming and orderly classroom environment. These expectations align closely with our school values and support students in becoming thoughtful and responsible leaders within our community.

This term promises to be an exciting and enriching one, filled with engaging learning opportunities and memorable experiences. Students will continue rehearsals for the Stage 3 production, The Wrong Way Round, which will culminate in a celebration of creativity, collaboration and performance. In addition, students will attend the High School's musical production of Aladdin Jr., further fostering their appreciation of the performing arts.

Our term is punctuated by several special events, including Winter Sports Photos and Book Week. As part of our Book Week celebrations, students will have the exciting opportunity to engage with acclaimed Australian authors Corey Tutt and Tristan Bancks, whose visits will inspire a love of reading, storytelling and lifelong learning. These experiences will complement our ongoing efforts to foster curiosity, creativity and a passion for literature.

This term, Year 5 students will engage in a focused five-week film study of Holes by Louis Sachar. Throughout the unit, they will analyse key aspects of the text and film, including characterisation, plot development, cinematic techniques, and the influence of camera angles on audience interpretation. Following this study, students will undertake a unit on informative writing, developing their ability to compose well-structured information reports that incorporate topic sentences, cohesive organisation, and precise subject-specific vocabulary. These writing tasks will be authentically linked to concepts explored in Science and Geography.

SCIENCE

This term, Year 5 students will investigate the factors that influence Earth’s climate, exploring both natural processes and the impact of human activities on our environment. They will develop an understanding of the difference between weather and climate and examine how environmental changes can affect atmospheric conditions over time. Students will explore the digital technologies used to monitor and predict weather, including satellites, weather stations and warning systems for significant weather events such as floods and cyclones. Using a range of digital tools, they will research, analyse and communicate scientific information through the creation of an informative infographic. Through the design process, students will apply their scientific understanding to develop and test a sustainable solution for a home weather station. They will also investigate how digital products are designed for users by evaluating a variety of weather applications for their functionality, accessibility, visual appeal and suitability for different audiences. Through the study of a contemporary bushfire event, students will investigate the location and extent of the disaster and examine its effects on natural environments, communities and infrastructure. They will develop an understanding of how bushfires can significantly alter landscapes and affect the lives of individuals and communities. Students will also explore strategies used to prevent, prepare for and minimise the impact of bushfires, considering the roles of individuals, communities and emergency services in responding to natural hazards. Through links with Science and Technology, students will investigate the environmental factors that contribute to bushfires and evaluate ways in which scientific knowledge and technological innovations can assist in reducing future risks. This unit encourages students to think critically about the relationship between people and the environment while developing their understanding of resilience, preparedness and sustainability.

YEAR 5 - TERM 3

VISUAL ARTS

Students will be looking at the artist Nike Savvas, whom Orange is lucky enough to currently have exhibiting at Orange Regional Gallery. They will use her artworks ‘Diamond Light’ and ‘Diamond Dusk’ as inspiration for creating an artwork using glitter and glue. They will also collaborate to create a class installation based on ‘Chroma Haze’.

Students will then be studying the works of First Nations artist Daniel Boyd and his modern interpretation of the pointillist movement. Students will explore his works and the subject matter of his artworks before honing in on his work ‘Untitled (TBOMB) which will act as a basis for their own interpretation of his practice in creating a disaster scene using pencil, PVA glue and paint.

WELLBEING

Students will take part in weekly lessons based on the URStrong program, aimed at teaching conflict resolution, problem solving, positive communication skills at an age-appropriate level. Students will also use the Grow Your Mind and the Smiling Minds program to develop self-awareness and mindfulness.

PERFORMING ARTS

In collaboration with Art, students will explore the installations of Nike Savvas and create their own artworks inspired by movement in nature. In Music, they will listen to works inspired by nature and create a soundscape to accompany their installation using layered ostinatos, instrumental, environmental, and digital sounds. Students will also explore the role of culture in First Nations music, examining how music can reflect connection to Country.

PDHPE

During PE, students will explore specific offensive and defensive games. These games will develop gross-motor skills, catching, striking and throwing.

We will also participate in the Amazing Me program, supporting students' personal development, wellbeing and understanding of the changes associated with growing up. Through this learning, students will develop greater self-awareness, emotional resilience and positive decision-making skills, while exploring strategies for maintaining healthy relationships and contributing positively to their communities.

Both the in-school sessions and the parent presentation emphasise the importance of understanding how our bodies grow and develop in a positive, respectful and age-appropriate manner. We hope your family has enjoyed a relaxing holiday and found time to recharge. As we begin Semester 2, we are excited to welcome both new and old Year 6 students back for another term of learning, growth and opportunity.

Term 3 is an important chapter in the Year 6 journey. As our students continue to develop as leaders within the Junior School, they will also strengthen their connections with the Senior School through a range of transition experiences, helping to prepare them for the exciting year ahead.

A standout feature of the term is the Stage 3 Musical. This much-loved production provides students with the chance to showcase their creativity, collaborate with their peers and develop confidence through performance. News Media and Authorial Choices

Students will explore the textual concepts of argument & authority and perspective & context by analysing digital news articles. They will examine how language and authorial choices shape meaning, influence perspective and establish credibility.

Students will apply this understanding by writing factual news reports and creatively manipulating language to compose a fabricated news article.

Students will also develop their knowledge and understanding of persuasive texts and the appropriate features to compose persuasive texts with clear and logical points.

SCIENCE

Term 3: Conserving Earth

This term, students will investigate the properties of materials and how they can be used to support more sustainable practices. They will plan and conduct fair tests to explore how different materials interact with water before applying their findings to a real-world design challenge. Using the design process, students will develop an innovative solution to reduce textile waste from fast fashion and communicate their ideas through scientific explanations, labelled diagrams and annotated designs.

VISUAL ARTS

In this unit students appreciate the diverse styles of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and learn about their artistic practices. Students make their own recycled sculpture of a selected native Australian animal. They consider the animal’s characteristics and behaviours and develop an original design which represents the qualities and personality of their chosen animal using simple construction techniques. They will then create a drawing of this same animal to enter into the Australian Conservation Fund’s ‘Wild at Art’ competition. This will constitute a body of work.
