The Kingston Legacy Fund is an exciting new way to support the borough long into the future. Until March 31st 2015 we will be able to boost all donations to this Fund by 50% under the Community First programme. Donations are invested as part of an endowed fund and the annual income is used to support charitable activity year on year in our borough. The capital sum continues to grow and provides a long lasting source of support for charities and community organisations. As an individual, group or business, this offers you an excellent opportunity to maximise the impact of your donation and invest in a long term strategy for social change.

The Love Kingston fundraising campaign is part of Kingston Voluntary Action’s (KVA’s) Transforming Kingston’s Infrastructure project, funded by the Big Fund on behalf of the Office for Civil Society. KVA is working in partnership with The London Community Foundation on delivering this campaign. All donations will be made to the Love Kingston campaign at The London Community Foundation. Our vision is of a strong and generous community – where residents, businesses, community groups and government act collectively to create a fair and good society for all who live or work in the borough. It is easy to forget about the thousands of residents left on the margins. Wealth and poverty live side by side, with middle class terraces, green spaces and trendy high streets blending into run-down estates and empty playgrounds. Love Kingston is an exciting new charitable venture responding over time to the changing needs of local people.

Across the borough, many inspiring organisations run by dedicated individuals achieve extraordinary things with very limited resources. For many of these organisations, the future depends on securing small but vital amounts of funding to reach individuals and communities in need. As the effects of the recession and budget cuts take hold, funding is getting tighter while the need for these services is greater than ever. Love Kingston is supporting five local projects committed to ‘pathways out of poverty’. All charitable groups funded by The London Community Foundation have been assessed and completed a due diligence process.

Oxygen works at the heart of Kingston’s most challenging and deprived communities – Cambridge Estate and Kingsnympton – working to support young people and give them hope for the future. Many live in difficult circumstances and often go from one crisis to another. This project will change lives, help them to discover their potential, raise their aspirations and empower them to achieve their ambitions.

Being in an abusive relationship was like being in a cocoon, and thanks to Hestia I have now come out of the relationship and blossomed Hestia beneficiary

1 in 4 women experience at least one incident of domestic violence during their lifetime. Women who flee often leave everything behind including family, friends, possessions, jobs and security. If they cannot find space in a refuge they face a stark choice between homelessness and destitution, or remaining with an abusive partner.

This project supports 3 refuges in Kingston, providing women and children with a safe place to live during this stressful time.

Homelessness is a prevalent problem, particularly with the economic downturn. This is true, even in the borough of Kingston which is seen to be affluent. Single people out of work or on low income, if they are ineligible for help from the council, find it extremely difficult to obtain affordable housing. This project provides housing and welfare benefit advice, offers a hostel placement service and endeavours to find the client a space in a night shelter or hostel. There are several pockets of deprivation and debt levels above the national average in Kingston upon Thames. Hidden hunger is an issue where there is low income and no financial safety net or savings. An unexpected bill or reduction in income can push a family into crisis, unable to buy basic food.
