Director of Futures

Summary of the role:

Reporting to the Senior Deputy Head Academic, the Director of Futures plays a pivotal role in preparing students for life beyond school. This strategic leadership position is responsible for designing and delivering a comprehensive careers and futures programme that spans from Lower School through to Sixth Form The role includes oversight of careers events, the KGS Accelerator programme, work experience and apprenticeships, ensuring students are informed, inspired, and equipped to make confident decisions about their futures The Director of Futures along with the Head of Sixth Form jointly oversees the work of the Higher Education Lead

Key responsibilities:

Strategic leadership of careers education

Develop and implement a whole-school careers programme tailored to student needs from Lower School to Sixth Form

Ensure the programme includes career guidance, employability skills, and exposure to a wide range of post-school pathways

Work with the Head of PSHE to produce careers related lesson material

Events and engagement

Working with the Events Managers, plan and organise the KGS Careers Fair and other careers events, coordinating with alumni, and industry professionals

Organise career-specific evening events (e.g. Law, Engineering, Medicine) to provide targeted insights and networking opportunities

Collaborate with academic departments to integrate careers education into the curriculum.

Attend KGS Open Events for prospective students to promote the careers programme at KGS.

Career pathways

Administer the annual careers Morrisby profiling for Fourth Year students

Provide integrated student advice regarding A level choice to support career ambitions, via 1:1 student meetings as required

Provide guidance and support for students exploring apprenticeships and alternative routes such as foundation courses in the Arts.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of apprenticeship opportunities and liaise with providers to facilitate placements and applications

Work closely with the Higher Education Lead, the US universities co-ordinator and the Oxbridge co-ordinator to ensure an integrated approach to student advice.

KGS Accelerator Programme

Lead the KGS Accelerator programme - a speaker series designed to inspire entrepreneurial thinking and career exploration.

Identify and invite high-profile and engaging speakers from diverse industries using the KGS alumni network and other contacts

Work with the Events Manager to organise and oversee logistics for Accelerator events.

Develop and publish an annual programme of events in collaboration with the marketing team

Working with the Head of Marketing, promote the Accelerator internally and externally, including through social media and school website and publications.

Partnerships and promotion

Build relationships with employers, alumni, and apprenticeship providers

Work closely with the Higher Education Lead to ensure a coordinated approach to post-18 options

Work with the Marketing Department to showcase careers initiatives and success stories across platforms.

Keep parents informed about upcoming careers events via our parent weekly bulletin

Monitoring and Evaluation

Track student engagement and outcomes to evaluate the effectiveness of the careers programme.

Prepare reports for the School Executive and Governors on careers provision and student destinations

Person Specification

A degree or equivalent

Proven experience in careers education, university admissions, or related fields

Knowledge of current issues in futures education

Experience and knowledge of career pathways post-18

Strong organisational and communication skills.

Excellent IT skills; proficient in MS Office packages

Ability to engage and inspire students across age groups

Experience in event planning and stakeholder engagement

Leadership experience

Experience delivering career advice to students

Familiarity with apprenticeship frameworks

Experience working in an independent school setting

Working pattern

This is a permanent, full-time post, working 40 hours per week in term time (Monday to Friday), plus 3 weeks (180 hours) to allow for time to attend evening events, A level results, parent and student careers events etc.
