Kingston Carers’ Newsletter Kingston Carers’ Network Young Carers Project needs your vote in the Lloyds Bank Community Fund KCN has been shortlisted for the Lloyds Bank Community Fund 2013 in Kingston upon Thames. By encouraging the public to vote, KCN has a chance to be awarded a £3,000 grant from Lloyds Bank to enable it to continue doing good work in the community. The money will fund transport for the Young Carers Project and enable them to continue to offer respite activities to nearly 300 young carers. The Lloyds Bank Community Fund is helping local people across England and Wales to have a positive impact at the hearts of their communities by giving grants to over 1,300 local good causes in villages, towns and cities across England and Wales. There are four local good causes in each community and each will receive an award. Two local good causes from each community will receive £3,000 each, with the other two receiving awards of £300 each. Voting runs from 9.00am on 23rd September to 11.59pm 1st November and you can cast your vote in Lloyds TSB branches, by visiting the Lloyds Bank Community Fund Website www.lloydsbank.com/communityfund, or by texting VOTE LPLB to 61119. Only one vote per community group, per mobile phone number is allowed so make sure you ask everyone you know to vote for us!

KCN is awarded PQASSO Quality Mark The PQASSO Quality Mark is a nationally recognised award that offers users, commissioners and funders, external verification of the quality and credibility of an organisation. KCN has worked long and hard to gain this accreditation. 87 quality indicators had to be met and evidenced, coupled with an on-site evaluation. Every business process was examined thoroughly from communications to planning, monitoring and evaluation and the ability of KCN to manage money and resources. Kate Dudley, CEO, said “We are delighted that the quality of our work has been recognised and we are proud to have been awarded the PQASSO Quality Mark.”

Mindfulness for Carers in partnership with Kingston’s Wellbeing Service Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction is a program for reducing stress and anxiety which has been widely approved by the international medical community. It teaches greater awareness of our thoughts, feelings and sensations through simple techniques like meditation and gentle movement. In the course you will learn:  to stay in touch with the present moment and be less caught up in negative thought patterns  to develop more helpful responses to stress  to use simple meditation techniques which can transform daily life including sitting meditation exercises The programme will equip carers with the skills to reduce stress, improve attention, reduce emotional reactivity and improve the sense of wellbeing in your life. Come and join us on the positive journey together. The course will take place on Mondays starting 2nd December through to 3rd February (excluding 23rd and 30th Dec) and will be held at Mefas Centre, Blagdon Road, New Malden from 10am to 12pm, followed by a light lunch.

Mayor’s Charitable Trust raises £42,000 for local groups Three local groups are each £14,046 better off thanks to donations and fundraising in aid of the last Mayor of Kingston’s chosen charities. A total of £42,139.99 was raised by the Mayor’s Charitable Trust during Councillor Mary Heathcote’s year in office from May 2012. Kingston Carers' Network, Yorda Adventures and The Community Brain share the proceeds. Kingston Carers’ Network provides information, advice, advocacy and support to around 300 young carers aged five to 18 and 1,000 adult carers. Yorda Adventures provide activities and short breaks for children with severe learning disabilities. The Community Brain works to foster a stronger sense of community and place in Surbiton through the arts, education and local history. Councillor Mary Heathcote said, "The people of Kingston
