So here we find ourselves already in November—where has the time gone? Kingston Young Adult Carers have been busy over the last few months and inside you’ll find out more about what we’ve been doing and what we’ve got planned. Kingston Carers’ Network
In August we were lucky enough to spend a whole week working with the charity Create and Mosimann’s food academy. It was also a chance to work with our neighbouring Carer’s services in Richmond and Merton. Throughout the week the group was tasked with planning a 3 course lunch for ten guests and creating a pop up restaurant. As the final day arrived everyone looked really proud to present their food—and what delicious food it was! There were also hand made menus doubling up as placemats, turmeric dyed napkins, hand sewn bow ties and an innovative table centre piece.

August also saw the creation of a Young and Young Adult Carers publication entitled Not true to yourself. Over three days our group of four young adult carers worked with artist Phoebe Davies on a photography and self identity project. The publication showcases how emotions can be portrayed through photography. To reach the finished product the group explored different areas to locate backgrounds for staged photography, shot the photos, acted as editors to agree content and design as well as discussing themes of anxiety, power, control, hopes, concerns and how we see ourselves and others.

Thriving or Surviving? Feelings of confusion, keeps bugging my head Feelings of unsureness, I'm painting it all red Feelings of frustration, overcomes me instead Feelings still wavering, keeps me from falling to bed (Poem by Rustia Fustejo, available at hellopoetry.com) How are you? No, REALLY? What do you say when someone asks how you are? Do you panic, wondering whether to answer the question honestly? Do you realise that you don’t actually know? In 2015 Kingston Young Adult Carers’ Project plans to create a way of talking about issues such as stress, sadness, feeling tired and unwell and what we can do to cope. Why? Because life should be about more than just surviving.

On 22nd November we will be visiting Unicorn Theatre in Central London to see the play “Girls Like That”. The play explores the differences in how girls/ women and boys/men are treated as well as the potential problems when using social media. There are currently a few spaces available so let me know if you’re interested in coming (contact details at the back of this newsletter). Do you love reading and want somewhere to socialise with like minded people? Then our book club is for you! We meet once a month in Kingston and welcome new members. The book club is informal so if you don’t like the book, there’s no pressure to finish it. Even if you haven’t had time to read more than a couple of pages, come along to hear what other people thought of the book. Each month a different member puts forward three book choices for us to choose from so we cover a wide range of genres and styles. Previous reads have included When God Was A Rabbit by Sarah Winman and Memoirs of A Geisha by Arthur Golden.

Bring & Share Lunch Monday 22nd December, 12.00pm to 2.00pm Noble Centre, New Malden
On Monday 22nd December we’ll be holding a bring and share lunch for all young adult carers at the Noble Centre in New Malden. We invite you to come along and bring some food that you’d like to share with others. Emma will be making her top secret sausage rolls and some delicious shortbread - not to be missed! It’s an opportunity to come together - not just to mark Christmas but to enjoy each other’s company. Who knows what other yummy treats we’ll see!
