We know those listed here are just the tip of the iceberg but hope it provides some incentive to spend locally this summer.

Now that we're open again, what better way to support local businesses and the economy than to dine out and enjoy Kingston's many (and varied) attractions.

Rather than battle with traffic jams on arterials and queues at the airport, take a leaf from this book and holiday in Kingston this summer.

We have everything on offer right here in our own backyard, from beautiful sandy beaches, to wetlands, amazing restaurants, beautiful reserves, cycling trails, golf courses and adventure sports, through to quaint shops and industrial breweries.

We spoke to a number of residents who live and work in Kingston to find out their secrets to enjoying our city.

Local singer/songwriter Akosia is a former Kingston Arts Grant recipient who was recently chosen as a finalist for her song ISO at the Los Angeles Film Awards. Akosia recently performed at Melbourne Music Week 2021 and the New Year’s Day Sun Cycle Festival.

For a slower pace, she suggests Jason Petric and Nick Collins run the 3rd-generation pie business, Ivan’s Pies, out of their shop and factory outlet on Woodlands Drive, Braeside.

“We enjoy a relaxing lunchtime walk to Braeside Park. There is now a pedestrian tunnel just around the corner from our pie shop that allows you access to the park under the new Mordialloc bypass Freeway.”

“heading down to Mordi beach early in the mornings to watch the horses swim. In Braeside Park at the end of Cypress Dr, down the wetlands trail, you’ll find a bird hide. It’s one of two cute hideouts around the lake where you can watch birds. I also recommend a stroll around Karkarook Park followed by dinner at Hodori Korean Garden, it’s right on the edge of Kingston but it’s still ours and it’s delicious.”

"We love visiting the Edithvale General Store. It has fantastic coffee and milkshakes and we are always greeted with a happy face! Same with Morris Leigh in Aspendale. We also enjoy walking the wetlands tracks and trying to spot kangaroos."

The Baby family have lived in Kingston for 15 years since migrating from Singapore.

They are active members of their local church and enjoy catching up with other members.

“Over the years we have seen Namatjira Park transform so much.

It’s become one of our favourite spots in the neighbourhood.

We also love visiting Bald Hill park. It is a really lovely spot for both exercise and leisure. It is characterised by big rolling hills and is really serene in the morning and evenings. And, for a treat, you can’t beat the chips from Chargrill Chicken in Clarinda.”

“Some of our favourites on Main Street in Mordialloc include Bang Bang, Saffron, Immi Dumpling Bar and Tanabe in Mordialloc. If we’re not out eating, we’re on our bikes working it all off, cycling along Mordialloc Creek or walking along the Bay Trail.”

HEALTHY KINGSTON

Kingston boasts over 200 beautiful parks and more than 13kms of stunning foreshore. These are great spaces to unwind, meet up with friends, enjoy a picnic or get active.

Pack a picnic There are too many beautiful spots to enjoy a picnic across Kingston to name them all! But here are a few stand outs: BRAESIDE PARK - an oasis of red gums and wetlands, that will make you feel as though you’ve escaped to the country. It has picnic tables, electric BBQs, an adventure playground and many nature trails to enjoy.

KINGSTON HEATH RESERVE, MOORABBIN - this park has an abundance of shady spots to relax in. It also has BBQs, a playground, sports fields, community gardens and two shelters ideal for children’s parties.

PETER SCULLIN RESERVE, MORDIALLOC - next to Mordialloc beach, this reserve is also close to Main Street.

Grab some takeaway food and enjoy! Although the playground is unfortunately closed, we will be seeking your input into an exciting

new playground design over the summer. Keep an eye on yourkingstonyoursay.com.au KARKAROOK PARK, HEATHERTON - an ideal picnic spot by the lake, with electric BBQs, picnic tables (both undercover and in the open), toilets, a playground and access to an observation tower and walking tracks.

BICENTENNIAL PARK, CHELSEA - a park for all ages with a skate park, playground, basketball court, plenty of grass and shady trees. It also features shelters with BBQs and tables, toilets and water taps.

PATTERSON RIVER OUTLOOK - overlooking the river, this site offers BBQs, picnic tables, a sheltered area, and toilets. After your picnic, enjoy the 6km circuit trail at the bottom of the river.

Bicentennial Park is also home to an all-abilities Changing Places toilet and liberty swing.

Boating and water activities Patterson River offers four public boat ramps plus parking for cars and trailers and is one of the busiest and largest boat launching facilities in Victoria. Fishing enthusiasts visit this area to catch Snapper, Mullet, Australian Salmon, Bream and Mulloway.

A number of fishing charter services operate in the area.

These include Sharkmen Fishing Charters, Bagout Fishing Charters and Reeltime Fishing Charters.

First built in the 1950s, Mordialloc Pier is a Kingston landmark. Fishing is also very popular here and along the Mordialloc Creek.

Other popular water-based activities include Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) on Port Phillip Bay. SUP Boards are available

to hire at the SUP Warehouse on Beach Road in Mordialloc.

Take a canoe and a fishing rod to Karkarook Park lake, to catch some rainbow trout or red fin. Don’t have a canoe? Hire one locally, from Capacity Sports in Moorabbin.

Want to learn how to sail?

A number of local clubs run introductory sailing courses in Kingston. These include: the Carrum Sailing and Motorboat Club, the Mordialloc Motor Yacht Club and the Parkdale Yacht Club.

Boat hire is available from Bluey's, located next to the pier.

Let’s get physical Grab a bike - or take a stroll - and enjoy one of Kingston’s many great tracks, including: the Bay Trail, the Longbeach Trail, the Patterson River Loop and the Peninsula Link Trail. Or enjoy the free outdoor exercise equipment in many parks.

Kingston is home to many of Victoria’s best golf courses. There are also several gyms, health and wellbeing studios in Kingston offering classes seven days a week.

Local pilates and yoga studio Soul Athletic in Parkdale is run by Eleesha (main picture above) and her husband Chris. Every time someone pays to attend one of their classes they donate $1 to a local family in need. kingston.vic.gov.au | Page 5

Kingston is home to many local artists and Council is proud to provide opportunities for our creative community to shine.

Kingston’s galleries and performance venues, the Shirley Burke Theatre in Parkdale and Kingston Arts Centre in Moorabbin are open to the public and regularly feature new exhibitions, workshops and performances.

Private galleries such as the Studio Gallery in Cheltenham also

showcase a range of collections, while Le Studio Art Space in Mordialloc hosts art classes in different mediums, exhibitions and events.

For those wanting to experience a day of art exploration, Kingston’s public art trail provides a treasure trove of discovery.

Your journey could begin in Carrum at the Carrum Urban Marker and Matt Adnate indigenous scene. Then on to Chelsea where Seasonal Migrants (2020) by Geoffrey Carran is located on the back of the Chelsea Sports Womens Centre. It pays homage to the Sharp Tailed Sandpiper - which annually migrates from Siberia to the Edithvale Wetlands. Opposite the Chelsea Train Station is The Strand Mural (2020) by Tom Civil, which incorporates coastal and beach themes.

C While you're in the area please take a moment to 'Relax! You're in Edithvale'. (And enjoy the artwork which shares the same namesake), commisioned by the Edithvale Collective. It can be viewed at Denman Avenue, off Nepean Highway, Edithvale.

The collective's latest piece of public art can also be viewed at Beeson Reserve.

Waterways is home to a range of sculptural pieces and you could spend an entire day exploring the works around Waterside Drive and Kinglake Circle.

There are five notable works from artist Greg Johns, four from Ken Blum and the Argyle piece from CPG.

E Over to Mordialloc, a new mural by Abbey Rich and Beci Orpin, The Shape of Movement, has just been completed in the Ben Kavanagh Reserve on the sporting rebound wall. At Pompei’s Landing, enjoy a tribute to a local landmark, Pompei’s Boat (2010) By Julie Squires.

Just north along the bay, stands another impressive piece by artist Julie Squires, Horse (2009). It was inspired by the local racehorses who exercised along this stretch of the foreshore.

F The new Mentone Community Piazza is home to artist Julie Shiels’ New Rivera (2019) installation. The bronze deck chairs celebrating the suburb’s beach culture and Italian Influences.

G Kingston’s north-west is a gold mine for art lovers.

Resting Place (1999) is located just outside the Southland complex and offers a unique refuge outside the busy shopping precinct.

Nearby, local street artist, James Beattie, has created two murals to commemorate the history of Cheltenham and Moorabbin.

Two Acre Village (2012) is best seen from the train, and reflects the early history of Cheltenham, which was once known as ‘Two Acre Village’. Hidden in the carpark beneath Kingston City Hall is the Moorabbin Junction (2014) mural, celebrating the iconic hall with its red curtain and 1928 Wurlitzer Theatre Organ.

H Stop in at the Moorabbin Airport Museum, where aircraft enthusiasts have turned their hobby into what could be the finest collection of Australiandesigned or built aircraft in the world.

Heading east are the final three works on the public art trail.

Bundle of Sticks (2008) by Elizabeth Weissensteiner in Clarinda represents the strength of a community that has a shared identity and purpose. Located at the Westall Library and Community Hub, Ian Bracebirdle’s piece Unukomono (2017) represents both the market gardens that once thrived in the area and the growth of the community and migration to the area, and the language and culture of past current generations. Last but not least, Paul Johnson’s piece Tillage (2014) is positioned on the roundabout in the intersection of Old Dandenong, Centre Dandenong and Tootal Rd and represents the regions agricultural history.

With the demolition of Chelsea Station, Kingston is working with the original artist of The Art Pass (2013), Anu Patel, to reimagine the mural with the aid of the community members.

Another new mural will soon be created by artists Mike Makatron and Leo Gester on the exposed brick wall at the new pocket park at Horscroft Place in Moorabbin.

We look forward to the installation of Deb McNaughtan’s Rainbow Sculpture which is soon to become a feature piece on the Bay Trail.

And an exciting Indigenous installation will be completed mid-year at the Mentone Lifesaving Club, designed

by Indigenous artists who is working alongside the Bunurong Land Council to showcase the cultural heritage of this region.

Hidden industrial gems They may seem like concrete jungles, but in amongst Kingston’s industrial precincts are treasure troves just waiting to be discovered.

Breweries & Distilleries Kingston is home to several breweries producing some of the best craft beer in Melbourne.

Award winning microbrewery, Boatrocker Brewing Co in Braeside offers not only a tasting experience in the Barrel Room, but a great menu of charcuterie plates and woodfire pizzas.

In Moorabbin, a historic cigarette factory has been transformed into Stomping Ground’s new Brewery & Beer Hall at ‘Morris Moor’. The gigantic indoor/outdoor space features a 120 person function room, beer garden, sun deck.

It has a cubby for the kids and dogs are welcome.

Local favourite 2 Brothers Brewery is also just around the corner and hosts a weekly trivia night for a bit of fun with friends.

Mordialloc’s hidden oasis, Urban Ground has a lot to offer. It is home to its own food truck park with a frequent rotation of Melbourne’s best food trucks, plus its own café (Bowl’d).

It also boasts an onsite distillery, Saint Felix, which makes cocktails using their house-made spirits.

With live music and a play area for the kids, it is a good spot to while away a sunny afternoon catching up with friends. It is even petfriendly, so everyone is welcome.

Just around the corner on Governor Road in Mordialloc sits the family-owned Braeside Brewing Co. In addition to brewing their own selection of beer, there’s an onsite stone pizza oven cranking out delicious hot pizzas, live music on Friday nights and a fully fenced indoor kids play area, making this an ideal spot for families looking for a night out.

The tap room at Wolf of the Willows has 16 rotating taps offering both their craft beers and hard seltzer to be enjoyed with Asian-fusion delicacies from the VanGo food truck.

Why would you go anywhere else for your holidays?

There is no shortage of adventures to be had for kids of all ages in Kingston.

Visit Waves Leisure Centre for indoor and outdoor water-play this summer. Enjoy our popular splash-zone, which features giant tipping buckets. Whatever the weather brings it’s always 32-degrees in our indoor wave pool. And swimmers can also enjoy the lap pool and accessible facilities. If you feel like getting your skates (or rollerblades) on, Skateworld in Mordialloc offers general skating sessions for all ages as well as Roller Disco nights on Friday and Saturdays.

There are also several free skate parks available to everyone, located at: Namatjira Park in Clayton, Rowan Road Reserve in Dingley Village, Bicentennial Park in Chelsea and Sir William Fry Reserve in Highett.

For a free day out with something for the whole family, look no further than Bicentennial Park in Chelsea. The regional park on Thames Promenade is home to a playground and accessible facilities and features a full-sized basketball court which adjoin a large skate park.

Music lovers are welcome to bring their smart phones to plug in to on-site speakers to test out their DJ skills.

Other free full-sized basketball or netball courts can be found around Kingston at Bonbeach Reserve, Dales Park in Oakleigh South, Dingley Reserve and Rowan Road Reserve in Dingley Village.

For a small fee, Mordialloc Community Centre offers several different programs such as basketball, netball, gymnastics, karate and fencing and various types of dance, for both boys and girls of different ages.

If the weather turns nasty, visit one of Kingston’s indoor play and activity centres. Dingley Village is home to several centres, such as Superzu (a 2,000-square metre play centre) and Kid Factory.

If adults are wanting to join in the fun, head to General Public. There’s a bowling alley, pool tables, table tennis, games arcade and even a licensed bar for mum and dad.

Planet Kids in Cheltenham is a boutique-style playcentre, complete with two cafés to relax in while kids can enjoy the freedom to explore.

GET INVOLVED There is nothing quite like our community spirit here in Kingston, and with so many local charities and groups, there is a number of ways passionate residents can get involved.

Beach Patrol run several groups along the foreshore that keep our beautiful beaches clean of rubbish and remove unwanted waste to prevent it washing into the bay.

There are also numerous ‘Friends of’ groups that operate in our many coastal and reserve locations to improve our natural environment.

Many of these groups are also kidfriendly, making them a great way of getting the entire family involved in an important cause.

Our beaches are also home to many Lifesaving Clubs that encourage people of all ages to enjoy a healthy active lifestyle while learning the skills to become lifesavers. The clubs offer activities and opportunities in a range of areas including lifesaving, competitions, nipper programs, social events and fundraising.

Riding for the Disabled Moorabbin assist children and adults with disabilities to ride horses in a safe environment, under the supervision of registered coaches. Volunteers, between 16 and 80 years of age, are needed to help with riders and horses. All training is provided on the job.

Community Grants

Groups like Pantry 5000 and Matt’s Place Community Meals provide amazing support for those members in our community who are in need of food relief.

Pantry 5000 organise a range of groceries for low-income families weekly, and Matt’s Place provides hot meals and warm hospitality two days a week at four different locations across Kingston.

For lovers of live entertainment, Kingston Arts has a lot on offer. Live at City Hall presents Kate Ceberano on Saturday 23 April and Rebel, the David Bowie tribute on Thursday 31 March. Isaiah Firebrace will also be bringing his Spirit and Beyond tour to Kingston City Hall on Saturday 26 March.

Theatre shows will also be returning to Kingston with Become the One launching our 2022 season at Shirley Burke Theatre on Tuesday 22 March.
