AUTUMN 2021

WELCOME Following the easing of restrictions, we have been incredibly excited to see the smiles of our young and older members as we welcome the community back to our local libraries.

If you haven’t had a chance to visit our Parkdale or Cheltenham branches you’ll notice some big changes when you do, with new furniture and lay-outs. Drop into the redeveloped Dingley Village Library too and see the wonderful new community space that has now been officially opened.

There’s plenty of new programming coming in 2021 as well with some exciting new clubs and activities for ages 15+ including Brain Training, Tech Tryouts and our Book Chatters group.

Kids are invited to try some of our new After School Children’s Programs including Xbox Meet, Kid’s Movie Club and Lego free play as well as the return of some firm favourites.

Keep an eye out for our special new programs to watch out for like Sensitive Storytime, designed for children with additional needs.

There’s plenty of reasons to pop into your local library this Autumn.

Fun events for the whole community As we ease into the new COVID Normal world, stay tuned for news about the bigger and better Chelsea Twilights coming your way later in 2021.

Chelsea Library will again be participating on Tuesday evenings, with extended opening hours and an expanded range of activities on offer.

Movie screenings, trivia nights, book chats and guest speakers are just a taster of what will be on offer.

Inspired by interviewing veterans and Greek people, the writer and director of Blood and Bone – a WW2 play - Demetra Giannakopoulos and Meg McNena, discuss how this history of strangers helping each other at great risk resonates with their migrant backgrounds and speaks to a troubled world.

We will get back to you within five working days with three suggestions (or ten if children’s picture books), including holds placed for you if you request that option.

Do you enjoy talking about different books you’ve read? Come and join our Book Chatters group at Cheltenham or Parkdale Library once a month. Bring along a favourite book or one you have just finished and chat with fellow book lovers and share tips about the next book to read. There is no set title each month.

Tech Tryouts Do you read about new technologies or hear others talking about things like 3D printing, virtual reality, QR codes or Spheros and wonder what the heck it’s all about? Think computers and technology are only for the kids? Think again and wonder no more.

This is your chance to explore, discover and most importantly have a go at using technology and products that are fast becoming part of everyday life.

At Tech Tryouts, the grown-ups have permission to play.

Want to learn new skills and have a laugh with a like-minded adult group?

Come along and give your brain a workout with activities such as quizzes, memory puzzles and word search.

Enjoy a monthly movie screening at Dingley Library just for kids. A great opportunity for primary school aged kids to get together and relax with some snacks and a movie. Movies will be rated either G or PG.

If you love gaming, competition and having fun with like-minded friends, then Xbox Meet is for you. This is a monthly club for older children aged 10+ which allows kids to participate in and learn a variety of games on Xbox One. Includes tournaments and competitions – are you up for a challenge?

ALL AGES Drop-in sessions Looking for a casual drop-in activity to do at the library after school? Then Makerspace is for you. Hands-on activities with things for you to explore, make or do. It could involve craft, construction or new technology – there’s always something interesting going on.

MAD ABOUT SCIENCE & SPACE ADVENTURE APRIL SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAM

With April school holidays at Kingston Libraries this special theme will take children to the zoo, space adventures, explore, play and create, and two movie days.

For preschool children 0-5 years.

Kids can now enjoy digital books in over 29 languages, together with English translations, from the comfort of home.

Share 1000 books with your child in the years before they start school to prepare them for formal learning and nurture a love of books, reading and language. Reading helps support brain development, social and communication skills, as well as sparking their imagination and helping them understand change or new events in their lives. It’s never too early to start reading to your child – even newborns.

You can read a thousand different books or read one book a thousand times. Books experienced at library story time sessions, preschool, day care and playgroup can also be counted towards your child’s total.

You’ll get a free library bag when you register, there are milestone rewards to collect as you progress through the program and of course there’s a certificate at the end. The program is completed when your child reaches 1000 books or they start school.

STORYTIME NEW* SENSITIVE STORYTIME Dingley Library Mondays 9:30am Sensitive Storytime is designed for preschool aged children with additional needs or those who simply prefer a quieter, calmer, more subdued session. Sensory needs around sound and light are taken into consideration and visual cues are used to help children follow what comes next in the session. Enjoy short stories and songs, followed by simple sensory play activities in this 30 minute activity.
