Welcome!

I’m delighted to welcome you to the latest edition of What’s On for Kingston Libraries. Our libraries continue to be vibrant and welcoming community spaces, alive with opportunities to learn, connect and be inspired. From Storytime sessions and book groups to classes, events and a wide range of free programs there is something for everyone to enjoy.

This season’s highlights include the everpopular Expert Series featuring Professor Kate Burridge exploring the lifecycle of slang and archaeologist David Lloyd uncovering what lies hidden beneath our feet. Music lovers can enjoy relaxed performances through Live at the Library, while gardening enthusiasts won’t want to miss an evening with Keith and Elizabeth from the Muddy Boots podcast.

For book lovers, the program offers a rich lineup of author talks, a lively Mystery Night Panel and the opportunity to tune into livestreamed sessions from the Sydney Writers Festival.

We’re also proud to support our community’s wellbeing with events marking Men’s Health Week.

Whether you’re looking to learn something new, connect with others or simply take a moment out of a busy day, our libraries provide welcoming spaces to do just that.

Eurovision 2026 Grand Final

An early-morning watch party of the SBS broadcast of the live 2026 Eurovision Grand final from Vienna, Austria.

Writers in Residence

Meet the Writers

Alistair Ward

Alistair Ward (he/him) is an award-winning writer, actor and director who has worked across New York, London, Sydney and Melbourne. Founder and Artistic Director of Pansy Productions, his debut play twenty-something won the 2019 Melbourne Fringe People’s Choice Award.

His work focuses on queer stories and contemporary issues, and he is passionate about mentoring emerging artists and championing inclusive casting.

The Writers in Residence program is a pilot initiative for 2026, developed as a partnership between Kingston Arts, Kingston Libraries and Dingley Village Neighbourhood Centre, with the aim of growing and expanding the Artist in Residence opportunities available at Kingston.

We are delighted to welcome three writers to Dingley Village Library as part of our first Writers in Residence program.

During their 10-week residency, the writers will have access to a shared working space where they can immerse themselves in their writing practice. They will also connect with the community through various workshops.

Jessica Stanley

Jess Stanley (she/her) is a Naarm/Melbourne–based actor, writer, voice artist and intimacy coordinator. Longlisted for the Richell Prize for her novel Intimacy, Jess is CoArtistic Director of theatre company, Spinning Plates Co.

Her stage and screen credits include Year of the Rooster, Rhinoceros, The Crocodile, Ancestry Road and The Doctor Blake Mysteries. She also hosts the podcast Do It Again But Better.

Kimberly Gillan

Kimberly Gillan is a Melbourne journalist and features writer who specialises in humancentred stories about wellbeing, relationships, travel and modern life.

After leaving too many fictional first drafts to gather dust, she's thrilled to join the Kingston Council Writer’s Residency to commit to completing her debut fiction novel, relishing the opportunity to have a dedicated space for focus and creativity.

Creative writing for beginners: From idea to first scene

Facilitated by Kimberly Gillan

Have a story in mind but don’t know how to shape it? Or staring at a blank page waiting for inspiration to strike? This two-part workshop is designed to help writers move past self-doubt and start getting words on the page.

Session 1

Explore where story ideas come from and learn how to shape them into a strong narrative foundation. Through guided prompts and in-session writing, you’ll begin crafting your story.

Turning life into story: Finding writing inspiration in your own experience

Tracing Indian Family History in Australia

Rachel Croucher’s greatgrandfather, Natha Singh, was a Sikh hawker from Mahru, Patiala District, Punjab, who arrived in Australia from undivided India in 1902. Rachel is an accredited genealogist, Vice President of the Australasian Association of Genealogists and Record Agents, Group Lead of the Indian and

South Asian Research Group at the Society of Australian Genealogists, and Director of the Origins Research Network. At this family history session, Rachel will unravel some of the difficulties of searching Indian/South Asian family history in Australia.

Material Culture and Family History

We can learn a lot about human behaviour, creativity, and the impact of economic, environmental, and technological forces on people by looking at material culture. What do those family heirlooms, keepsakes, mementoes tell us about the people who owned them and ‘the times’ they lived in?
