Welcome to Summer Artscape THE WARM SUNNY DAYS OF SUMMER HAVE ARRIVED, AND KINGSTON ARTS HAS PREPARED A GREAT SEASON OF ALFRESCO EVENTS, MUSIC AND EXHIBITIONS FOR YOU TO ENJOY. Kingston Arts’ ever-popular The Maker’s Festival returns this December, just in time for your Christmas shopping. The event will showcase beautiful handmade products by over 80 artisans and designers from across Melbourne, along with gourmet food trucks and live music. Be sure to bring your family and friends along to this great day out. In February Kingston Arts will present Newk! by Kingston’s local hero-of-the-stage Kieran Carroll, and Candy Bowers’ latest comedy, Australian Booty. Carroll and Bowers are both award winners and these performances are must-sees for the adults this summer. For the kids, we are excited to present two acrobatic adventures. In April, Joshua Phillips will perform The Man in the Mail, which is sure to delight, and come July, Dummies Corp, everybody’s favourite acrobatic clowns will be returning to our stage with their smash-hit show. If you’re looking to extend your practice into public spaces, then be sure to join Kingston Arts for a conversation with practising artists and festival producers as they share their knowledge in the production, commissioning and installation of public art. For the music lovers, Live at City Hall will continue to entertain with regular gigs of fabulous local and touring artists. Keep reading for Kingston Arts’ full list of events and exhibitions.

Photographers and video artists of all ages and experience have submitted over 50 images for exhibition at the Kingston Arts Centre. This remarkable overview of suburbs from Moorabbin, Dingley Village to Carrum will be launched and celebrated at The Makers Festival.

BY KINGSTON FOR HUMAN RIGHTS INC. Each year, the Kingston For Human Rights Committee holds a children’s poster art competition for Kingston schools and colleges to help raise awareness. This year’s exhibition responds to the theme: Celebrating Respect and Trust. Professor Gillian Triggs, President, Australian Human Rights Commission (2012-17) is the special guest speaker for the Awards Presentation. Proudly sponsored by City of Kingston, St. Augustine’s Southern Op Shop, Lions Club of Mordialloc and Dingley Village Rotary.

Kingston Arts offers three professional galleries for artists to exhibit their work and encourages applications by both emerging and established artists. Located in the Kingston Arts Centre and Shirley Burke Theatre each gallery includes an easy-touse track hanging system, professional lighting and mobile walls and free publicity services.

We aim to provide a dynamic program of visual arts by local, emerging and established artists to explore contemporary art in a supportive environment, which pioneers thoughtprovoking and professional exhibitions. Midsumma 2019: Crafty Queers BY KINGSTON ARTS Crafty Queers is Kingston’s inaugural visual arts residency and exhibition program celebrating craft and queer culture through the work of contemporary artists, Anna Dunnill and Nicholas Smith.

Opening:

Working from the new ceramics studio in Moorabbin, Anna will produce a series of ceramic vessels and objects that continue her research into the intersections of craft, queer community, and religious ritual. Nicholas will develop a new body of work that uses large two-dimensional objects constructed from clay, along with hand-sewn garments and shoes to respond to popular gay iconography and Victorianera decorative arts.

24–HOUR VISUAL ART AND CREATIVE WRITING COMPETITION IT’S BACK! VISUAL ARTS 10

Kingston Arts’ community favourite visual arts and creative writing competition returns this March, with over $4,000 worth of prizes to be won. Artists and writers of all ages and abilities are encouraged to get involved.

“It’s a fun community event that involves the whole family and it gives an annual art goal. It’s a fabulous one-off chance for amateur artists to be exhibited.” - past participant

The competition begins when the secret theme is announced on Friday 15 March. Artists and writers then have 24 hours to create an artwork or piece of creative writing and deliver it to Kingston Arts Centre for exhibition.

All works will be exhibited across G1 + G2. Prize winners announced at the free opening event.

Paintings, Crafts and Trinkets BY KINGSTON CREATIVE STUDIOS INC. Kingston Creative Studios Inc. is an independent, not-for-profit centre offering innovative workshops for artists and community members in arts, crafts, and creative business development at the Melaleuca Activity Hub in Clarinda.

Showing for the first time at G3 Artspace, the exhibition includes handmade arts, crafts and trinkets created by the unique and passionate individuals connected with Kingston Creative Studios. While the exhibition explores a wide range of styles and mediums, collectively the show demonstrates the power of creativity as a tool for healing accessible to all.

WORKSHOP AND LIVE PERFORMANCE OF ESCAPE FROM TRASH MOUNTAIN – AN EPIC TALE OF TRASHY PROPORTIONS

BUSH CREATURES

Created by Ben Anderson, Jhess Knight, Amy Moule and Jacob Williams, Escape from Trash Mountain sees 17 handmade puppets fight trash bats, navigate treacherous ravines and outwit trash monsters to save the planet. This will be immediately followed by a workshop where participants can make their own puppet from recycled materials.

Escape From Trash Mountain commences at 2.30pm; workshops commence from 3.15pm and are open to all ages.

Adults and children alike are invited to work with Indigenous artists from Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula to create their own bush sculpture made from natural and contemporary fibers. Workshops will take place in the Kingston City Hall Foyer from 3pm.

Guru Dudu takes the Silent Disco phenomenon to a whole new level with his Silent Disco Walking Tours. Expect hilarious commentary, uplifting tunes from the 70s, 80s and 90s, crazy improv and interpretive dance.
