A message from the Mayor JOIN KINGSTON ARTS THIS SPRING AND LEARN NEW SKILLS IN PHOTOGRAPHY, VIDEOGRAPHY, CRAFT OR EVEN WRITING IN OUR FABULOUS RANGE OF WORKSHOPS. Council’s Kingston Arts is thrilled to announce award-winning author Eleni Hale will be facilitating an intensive one-day workshop, The Five Elements of Story Writing, suitable for beginner and emerging writers. Join us to learn the five ingredients for bringing a story to life. Or, if you’re interested in learning skills to work behind a camera, then be sure to check out the OptiKA workshops on page 14. Hosted by professional photographer, Peter Merriner and video expert Jessie Imam, these workshops will provide tips and tricks for both amateur and seasoned photographers and videographers. Budding and emerging visual artists can participate in the creative and exploratory workshops featured on page 20. These are held at beach locations and Kingston Arts, giving participants the opportunity to collaborate with others while learning new skills. Kingston Arts is also excited to present some fantastic live performances this season, including: 39 Forever by Amity Dry, My Brilliant Divorce by the team that brought you Shirley Valentine, and Spencer – a brand-new Australian comedy-drama about an ordinarily dysfunctional family. Crafting Resistance:
Six Moments in Kingston BY KINGSTON ARTS Curated by craftivist Tal Fitzpatrick, this exhibition showcases the diverse collection of textile protest banners and video documentation created by local participants and community organisations during Six Moments in Kingston. VISUAL ARTS 4
Taking inspiration from the story of Julie Cooper, the first woman elected to local council in 1976 and first female Mayor of Moorabbin in 1982, the banners reflect their maker’s contemporary take on women’s suffrage and the struggles for equal rights endured into the present day.

Craftivism for Kids
– Creative Workshops FACILITATED BY TAL FITZPATRICK Around the globe, young activists are calling on world leaders to respond to the issue of climate change. Join the fight! Artist, activist and curator, Tal Fitzpatrick will host two one-hour craft + activism workshops as part of the public program accompanying the exhibition Crafting Resistance: Six Moments In Kingston. These workshops, suited to children aged 8-15 years, will see participants create mini protest banners about the climate crisis using new and reclaimed paper and craft items.

Tõku reo, tõku ohooho, tõku reo, tõku mapihi maurea / My language is my awakening, my language is my treasure. VISUAL ARTS 8
Presented by New Wayfinders and curated by Isabella Whãwhai Waru, Insurge, is an exhibition featuring new work by visual, sound, and performance artists of Oceanic descent, commissioned by Kingston Arts for Melbourne Fringe Festival.
In the United Nation’s International Year of Indigenous Languages, Insurge ignites the voices, and documents the languages, stories and talanoa//korero//conversations of Birraranga’s diasporic Pasifika peoples. We call in the mana of our peoples, our voices and our storytelling for a process of cultural resurgence, revitalising the power of our ancestral tongues; the vast and complex languages of the Pacific.

Help Clean Up the Planet
BY KINGSTON FOR HUMAN RIGHTS INC. Kingston For Human Rights is a volunteer-run organisation with the mission to raise public awareness around the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by holding a children’s poster art competition with local schools.

The artwork in this year’s exhibition responds to theme: ‘Help Clean Up the Planet’. The posters seek to showcase the children’s understanding of climate change and sustainability through the medium of art. This year’s guest speaker is Tracie Armstrong, the Director of Cities Power Partnership, Australia’s largest local government climate network.

The Bridge Projection Space converts a disused, third-story walk bridge located at the Kingston City Hall into a dedicated space for projection art and short-film. The space gives artists the opportunity to present highly visible, three-channel projections to commuters passing along the Nepean Highway. The Bridge exhibits a playful and accessible program of works by established and emerging artists responding to the unique architectural features of the space.
