Architect/Designer: Bates, Smart and McCutcheon, 1961
Open House Melbourne celebrates the city’s architecture and heritage by opening significant buildings to the public.
As part of Open House Melbourne, Kingston City Hall will open all its doors for the first time, inviting you to satisfy your curiosity and embark on a fascinating journey within its walls. Discover the architectural brilliance of this post-war modernist marvel, crafted in 1961 by architects, Bates, Smart and McCutcheon.
Delve into the foyers, auditorium, stage, and backstage areas, unlocking a deeper understanding of this architectural landmark nestled within Kingston.
Learn about the conflict surrounding its construction in the early 60s, appreciate the impact the building has had on culture and the arts and consider the opportunities of this and other local buildings in shaping the future fabric of the city through art and community engagement.
And let’s not forget the crown jewel, the Grand Hall, showcasing the resplendent 1928 Mighty Wurlitzer theatre organ, and the harmonious collaboration it has with the building’s architecture.
