A message from the Mayor KINGSTON ARTS IS CELEBRATING COMMUNITY ART THIS AUTUMN WITH THEATRE, LIVE MUSIC AND VISUAL ARTS. With a great line-up of bands, Pop-Up Bar is back for February and is a great place for you to dance the warm nights away with friends, live music, food vans and interactive art. In 2017 Lens Mist invited artists to put Kingston under the microscope, scouring suburbs, landscapes and streets of Kingston to uncover something they had never noticed before. While entries for our annual photography competition Lens Mist have closed, there is an opportunity to check out the exhibition at Mordialloc Food & Wine Festival and DFO Moorabbin in April. With a great year ahead visit, book and attend shows that catch your interest. We have some big names coming in the middle of the year including an award winning play by Hannie Rayson, a performance from the Melba Quartet as well as some fun for kids with Super Amazing Giant Girl and The Gizmo, so book early to secure your tickets. WE HEARD YOUR FEEDBACK AND WE’VE ADDED EXTRA PRIZES FOR KIDS THIS YEAR WITH OVER $4,000 WORTH OF PRIZES TO BE WON. Artz Blitz is back! Kingston Arts’ longest running community art competition for artists of all ages and abilities returns this March.
“It’s a fun community event that involves the whole family and it gives an annual art goal. It’s a fabulous one-off change for amateur artists to be exhibited.” - past participant
The competition begins when the secret theme is announced on Friday 23 March from which artists will have 24 hours to create an artwork (2D or 3D) or piece of creative writing and deliver it to Kingston Arts Centre for the exhibition.
Applications close: Monday 19 March, 5pm
All works will be exhibited across G1 + G2 and prize winners announced at the opening event.

Immerse yourself in diverse works, stories and free activities which showcase the heART of our community and the dedicated volunteers involved in Kingston’s nine Neighbourhood Houses.

Community heART Beyond the charts, bars, graphs and statistics gathered by Kingston’s nine Neighbourhood Houses, are an amazing range of personal stories. Stories about the creation of new futures, new skills, opportunities and life-long friendships.
This ‘living exhibition’ showcases the critical role Neighbourhood Houses play for many residents and celebrates the dedication of the local volunteer committees that steer them. Come to see the diverse works and stories created by local residents and join in ‘tasters’ of House activities which will be hosted at the gallery throughout the month for free. Colour + Form
BY SUE DAVIES AND ANGELA WOOD Colour + Form is a collaborative exhibition, which celebrates the art of Sue Davies and Angela Wood. Davies is inspired by patterns and textures found in nature; and Wood is influenced by urban industrial design and geometry. Both artists seek to incorporate the diversity of the environment into their practices to create distinctive, yet complementary works. VISUAL ARTS 8
Davies works in ceramics, often combining hand building with wheel throwing, joining and distorting of organic forms in clay. Wood works in oil, acrylic, ink, watercolour and ceramics. Davies creates patterns through shapes and symbols, emphasising the importance of colour in our lives.

Transient Structures
BY CANDICE MCGAW Presented by Kingston Arts Grant recipient Candice McGaw, Transient Structures expands on work made during an artist residency at the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI) in Clayton.

Thin Places

BY FIONNA MADIGAN In Celtic mythology, ‘thin places’ describes the close proximity between ‘visible’ and ‘invisible’ worlds. Fiona Madigan draws inspiration from this concept in her pigment and cold wax medium paintings to describe aspects of the natural environment and the relationship between physical and ethereal worlds. Working with a mixture of pigment, beeswax, resin and solvent on wooden panels; Madigan etches into each layer to reveal past gestures embedded within the painting. The final painting invokes the nature of the lifecycle and its infinite weave through time and space.

Until one night Ralph is rushed to hospital and, through an unlikely connection with Kaja, an interpreter, Luca learns to reconnect. This critically acclaimed new play, spoken in English and Italian, is about growing old, about communicating across generations and across cultures, and it is about dinosaurs – just not the prehistoric kind. This multi-generational migrant story was the winner of the 2015 Green Room Award for Best New Australian Writing. Each year, the City of Kingston invites individual artists, not for profit arts groups and organisations to apply for an Arts Grant as part of the wider Community Grants Program. The Arts Grants program supports a diverse range of artists, arts practice, organisations and arts activity and projects must have a public outcome.
INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS WHO CAN APPLY? If you are applying as an individual or group, you must be a practicing artist or arts worker and an Australian citizen or permanent resident. You may not apply for a grant if you received a grant, or administered a grant, from the City of Kingston in the past and that grant has not been satisfactorily acquitted.

‘Something you’ve never noticed before’

Lens Mist invited artists to put Kingston under the microscope, scouring the suburbs, landscapes and streets of Kingston to uncover something they had never noticed before local and professional artists of all ages submitted urban, landscape, portraiture and experimental artworks. This year’s curatorial committee, Lou Hubbard, Eliza Hutchinson and Mira Oosterweghel, will have shortlisted finalists to be exhibited at the Children’s Playground in Mordialloc Food Wine and MusicFestival and DFO Moorabbin. All artworks are available for purchase. Vote for the People’s Choice Award for your chance to win $250!
