Mayor’s message KINGSTON ARTS IS CELEBRATING COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS THIS AUTUMN WITH THEATRE, LIVE MUSIC AND VISUAL ARTS. Hannie Rayson will be joining us for Hello, Beautiful!, aiming to bring you a piece of sublime comic storytelling that begins with her upbringing in East Brighton. While entries for our annual photography competition Lens Mist have closed, there is an opportunity to check out the exhibition at Mordialloc Food & Wine Festival and DFO Moorabbin in March, and G3 Artspace in Parkdale in April. With a great year ahead visit, book and attend shows that catch your interest. We have some big names coming in the middle of the year including John Wood and Julie Nihill as well as some fun for kids with Bear Hunt and The Witches, so book early to secure your tickets. Contents PRESENTED BY KINGSTON ARTS Contents, a group exhibition of emerging artists, considers the enduring ‘reign of the image’ in everyday cultural production, examining its social and aesthetic relationship to contemporary abstraction. Following Disparate, a group exhibition of emerging artists curated by Mira Oosterweghel in 2015, Kingston Arts returns with the second iteration in the emerging artist series, combining both recent graduates and current students of Monash Art, Design & Architecture and the Victorian College of the Arts. Featured artists include Tia Ansell, Tim Buckovic, Caspar Connolly, Katrina Dobbs, Amalia Gray Lindo and Georgie North. EXHIBITIONS 4

What the Eye Forgets to See BY LISA O’KEEFE, CLIFF MACALPINE, GEOFF ALLEN, CHRISTINE CAIRNS, PAMELA DOOLEY, ESTHER MCINTYRE Under the mentorship of Mentone-Mordialloc Art Group tutor, Lisa O’Keefe, the Friday afternoon drawing class presents What the Eye Forgets to See, a group exhibition exploring pen, pencil and other drawing media. What the Eye Forgets to See gives viewers the opportunity to examine and appreciate the familiar in an unfamiliar way while encouraging the viewer to see the innate beauty of drawing as a medium.

Common Threads BY JO ROSZKOWSKI AND JULIET D. COLLINS Jo Roszkowski and Juliet D. Collins present Common Threads, an exhibition about place, shared experience and a yearning to learn about creative drive. Both artists are interested in collaborating through the idea of ‘common threads’, creating works where rich layers are a metaphor for the human psyche. Juliet D. Collins completed her Fine Arts degree at Edinburgh University and Jo Roszkowski studied Photography at RMIT, followed by Visual Arts Education at the University of Melbourne. Both artists maintain an active artistic practice through group and solo exhibitions, workshops and participation in local markets. EXHIBITIONS 6

In 1967, Greek actor Melina Mercouri appeared on Broadway in Ilya Darling, the musical adapted from her international hit film Never On Sunday. During the show’s run, a military coup took place in her homeland. She instantly expressed her opposition to the ‘Regime Of The Colonels’ and was barred from returning to Greece. Greek Goddess imagines Mercouri’s performance at a rally to raise awareness of her country’s non-democratic government. Mercedes and her musicians perform, with passion, traditional Greek songs and themes from Mercouri’s movies including of course, Never On Sunday, interspersed with folk tales, excerpts from her stage roles and stories from her colourful life.

In this tree lives a family of crows, but their home is threatened by developers looking to build inner city apartments where factories and shops used to be. One day, the child of the crows falls from the nest. As night falls, the neighbourhood cats move in for the kill. The woman intervenes and her encounter with the crows and their child transforms her life and ultimately transforms her. Singer/songwriter Taasha Coates is well known as the voice of multi ARIA Award winning folk-rock darlings The Audreys. With The Audreys on temporary hiatus, Taasha released her first solo album Taasha Coates & the Melancholy Sweethearts in late 2016. Recorded with fellow singer-songwriter and producer Shane Nicholson, Taasha has found a new voice through her solo material. More personal and direct, her songs swing between the sassy and the sad, tinged with that well-loved alt-country vibe.
