HALO 1977 LO W -H EY W O O D TH O M A S SCHOOL

We started out as separate indi viduals with personal dreams. Somehow, from the times we have shared we have found simi larities in the joy of life that lie between us all as a yearbook staff, a class, and a school community.

He can s ^ rc h a mountain, an ocean, but he w ill never find it He can lo o k it up in a catalogue, lik e SearsRoebuck, but where does all this get him : no where; maybe a friend, o r an enemy. But who really cares if he can search fo r his life, be cause life is nothing but a figment o f o ur imagi nation. S.K.

Blessing in Disguise Last night I slept, yesterday cursed, today prematurely exhaled, and ready to cripple a struggling tomorrow. I die with the newness of life, I cry wretching with yearning. Though I am blessed with unfulfillm ent and purpose unknown. In search o f whose para dise? Everything else falls far short o f my expectations. M y mind is a maze o f paths and unbeknownst to me I have no choice. Bless me with a desire for understanding, for through this path I w ill tru ly know wisdom. A destined friend to all who are w illin g to befriend him, and yet yours alone in Revela tions o f blessing in disguise. Andre Spencer

Friends I hope the day w ill be a lig hte r highway, Fo r friends are found on every road; Can you ever think o f any better way, Fo r the lo st and weary travellers to go? C H O R U S: M akin' friends fo r the w o rld to see, Let the people know, you got what you need; W ith a friend at hand, you w ill see the light, When yo ur friends are there then everything's alright. It seems to me a crime that we should age, These fragile times should never slip us by; A tim e we never can o r shall erase, As friends together watch the ir childhood fly. D u rin g the course of the a fternoon, w ith the assistance of faculty guides and the watchful eye of the sneak photographer, faculty and stu d e n ts a like wandered about b lindfold ed, jum ped an imaginary electric fence (some of us d id n 't make it), walked around on a wooden tro lle y , and trie d to cram w ith eleven o th e rs onto a (no, not a phone booth as in M o m and Dad's day) tire. One teacher thought it w ould be hysterical to float the tire o ut to sea (fo rtun a te ly, the se n io rs have a broad sense of hum or). And th u s, back to school. D esp ite the p ro te sts em itted at the m ere th o ug h t of sta rting another nine m onths of mental strife , everyone was a bit excited on the f irs t day back, p a rticula rly these 35 women, now in yellow and black (no, they are not the "Sa tu rd a y N ig h t L iv e " bees). Every se n io r acted as if graduation was o nly tw o days away. If you ignored y o u r w o rk and observed that slig h tly insane group in the small study hall, you w ould have seen great changes as the rea liza tion th is group w ould have to make it thro ugh one m ore year before they could ease on down the aisle slo w ly crept in to th e ir heads. As Septem ber turne d in to O ctober, se n io rs began to count the days to vacation (at th is point, a Saturday and Sunday constituted a vacation). D u rin g what we call p re -w in te r stra in , the insa nity b uilt up and, rather than ru n w ild th ro ug h the stre e ts of Stam ford rio tin g and pillaging, we all participated in that A ll-A m e ric a n holiday, Halloween. Th e e n tire school population donned costum es, fro m geisha g irls and Playboy b unnies to fru it s of the loom . T h is O ctober ended w ith a band: a m odel U N and an enjoyable fondue party fo r se n io rs in the faculty room . Som ehow Novem ber m ight have been an anticlim ax, but the plays lifte d o u r s p irits notably and the thought of five b lissfu l days to o urse lve s gave us cause to be th a n kfu l. Fo r the se n io rs, how ever, these days meant precious tim e fillin g out fo rm s and try in g to convince the colleges of th e ir choice (or any college?) to choose them. T h u s began the long lo nely wait (after the mailman sp irite d away the fo rm s containing life and soul) fo r the re p ly. As the m onth got colder, fre shm e n and se n io rs alike dashed o ff to B lo o m ie 's, Bob's and Lo rd y 's fo r the latest s h irts , pants, and, of course, Fair Isles. December b rought that special com bination of happiness and anxiety that d riv e s stud e nts up the wall.

Everyone looked forw ard to the C hristm a s Party and the vacation, but we w ould have liked to ignore the week in between — namely exams (gasp, sp utter). Fo r the se n io rs, the C hristm as P A R T Y W A S T H E F IR S T "la s t"; it brought fun and frantic m e m o rie s of last year and the sudden realization that there w ould be no next year at L - H T . N o thing can be said about that week of exams that has not been reiterated by every g irl w ho has been to rtu re d by them . T h e m ountains of notes hastily scribbled in class meant nothing as the pre-exam night cram w ore on. Know ledge ran in to the head, scrambled around try in g to find out what it was doing there, and slipped out. January! And a new beginning as the vacation s p irit was reluctantly abandoned fo r the mom ent. As the daily assignm ents w ere th ro w n o ut, drawn out, put out, kept out, left out and dropped out amid p ro tests like " W e ll, I d id n 't want to take th is course anyway!," the m onth w ore on. February marked the end of the trim e ste r fo r 24 se n io rs w ho took th e ir leave to enter the wide w o rld of free e n te rp rise , education, and travel. Heading fo r such diverse places as Kenya, New Y o rk C ity, W a shing ton, D.C., and dow ntow n Stam ford, they left the w o rld of blue and black far behind. Fo r the Glee Club the m onth marked the h ig h lig h t of Pop 's Party and the beginning of preparation fo r the musical. Th e Drama Club was in a t iz z y about the Sp rin g play, o th e rs prepared fo r a March p roduction and the O uting Club sought escape fro m the c o n tin uin g b itte r w in te r at a p roduction on Broadway. March meant the last chapters in th e ir jo u rn a ls as the se n io rs wrapped up th e ir in te rn sh ip s in the usual grand style. Back to re a lity w ith the in te rn sh ip presentations and, sh o rtly thereafter, the school dispersed h ith e r and yon to such rom antic places as Africa, C alifornia, Florid a, M exico and the French W e st Indies for a b rie f re st and relaxation. A fte r the re tu rn in A p ril and w ith the f lu rry of thespian endeavors and the Junio r Party, the se n io rs were rem inded of th e ir A p ril last year and the Junior Party w ith the revised sc rip ts, frantic rehearsals, fre nzie d decoration preparation and u n ifo rm s that w ere, fo r the most part, too b ig.Here they were, a year later, cracking th e ir ow ns w h ip s fo r the final tim e about th e ir schoolbooks in hasty preparation fo r the final fina ls and Advanced Placement exams approaching in May. A fte r th is last academic push, the re st was easy: graduation rehearsals, Blue -Bla ck picnic, the Pro m , amd the final tra d itio n s. Sudd enly the se n io rs found them selves at the candlelit Tru ste e s' D in n e r and gradu ation really was less than tw o days. Am id the reso und ing stra in s of "P o m p and C ircum stance," the se n io rs eased on down the aisle fo r that last c u rtsy, handshake and little blue case.

Th e Class of 1977 would like to thank another graduate, M rs. M arjorie Weidig, who is also com mencing a new life away from the school. She exemplifies our ideals in that she is our teacher and above all, our friend. Her hum or, love, and guidance have been cor nerstones in our years at LewHeywood Thomas and w ill remain w ith us always as we "keep ever lastingly at it."
