Thomas Main Head of School

Dear Class of 2009, How appropriate it is to have Transitions as a theme for this yearbook, as you approach one of the most significant transitions of your lives. Next year, you begin your careers in higher education; in no time, you will be transitioning again, this time to a professional life. We are all confident in your ability to make these transitions successfully, happily and productively. Our confidence is rooted in our deep faith in the strength of your character, your natural ability, and the preparation you have experienced here at King. In fact, you have been transitioning here for many years, whether that means the transition from Lower School to Middle School, or Middle School to Upper School, from JV to Varsity participation, from the ensemble to a lead role in the play, from honors to a high honors GPA, from regular to honors or AP courses, or from participant to leader in a community activity. Your education here at King has been largely defined by the opportunities that allow you to make transitions from one experience to another. As a class and as individuals, you have taken advantage of these opportunities, contributing to a year in which the school has succeeded in so many ways, both quantifiably and subjectively. Your academic accomplishment, effective leadership, athletic talent, artistic and dramatic flair, and your thoughtful and deep commitment to community, all combine to offer overwhelming evidence that you have taken advantage of the opportunities that have collectively allowed you to transition into a community of young adults that will have a positive impact on the world into which you now move. We all wish you the best of luck as you transition onward. We hope that you will remember the work that you have done here and depend on the lessons of these experiences for the work that lies ahead.

Now &Then This year, there have been many changes. With a new name, a new logo, a new cafeteria, and a new head of Upper School, these transformations have led us to look back. While piecing together this yearbook, just as friends piece together a scrapbook, this year's staff has enjoyed looking back on the memories they have made and reminiscing about the good times. Digging deep to find old pictures of faculty and going back a few years to find some young familiar faces, this year's theme of "Now and Then" explains itself. The only way we can truly know and appreciate what we are "now" is to remember and understand what we were "then." Looking back at the past and honoring the people that got us here is the best way to move forward. By making the divider of each section in the yearbook (Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School) a tribute to our past (King, Low-Heywood, and Thomas respectively) we hope to educate everyone in our community about where KING came from. Looking forward we hope that the community blazes on, into t future, all the while remembering and honoring its pa j

Dedication

This teacher's presence extends far beyond the classroom. Whether it be his fierce passion for coaching on the athletic fields, his inspirational and unifying words during assembly, his palpable spirit for all things King, his addictive personality and sense of humor, his care for students, or of course his ability to recite nearly every Robert Frost poem by heart, his presence is clearly felt by all. His absence next year and in years to come will no doubt be felt even greater. It comes with great honor and pleasure that the Class of 2009 dedicates this yearbook to Hans Richter.

.sing School

In 1875, Hiram King, a Dartmouth graduate, was asked by several local families to form a private boys school. Kings Day School was also located in downtown Stamford and had several homes before settling on Colonial Road in 1933. Twentyfive years later, the school building burned to the ground and was relocated to a replacement building. Five years later, the King School moved to the Simon Estate, the summer home of singer/songwriter Carly Simon and her family. King School and Low-Heywood-Thomas School maintained individual identities until 1988, when the King & Low-Heywood Thomas School was formed as a coeducational school.

The Lower School section is dedicated to Jonathan Gillies. We thank him for his many years of service and dedicatation.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

mm.

Low Hey wood School, first founded in 1865 by Mrs. Richardson, is the oldest of the three schools that merged to create the current King Low Heywood Thomas. In 1865, Mrs. C. E. Richardson founded the Mrs. Richardsons School on Atlantic Street in downtown Stamford. In 1883, Mrs. Louisa Low bought the school and ran the school with her niece and assistant, Miss Edith Heywood giving the school the name LowHeywood. Several years later Low-Heywood was forced to move from its downtown location to Shippan Point so a new Post Office building * •£ v*':;l. ' v could be built. At the time Low-Heywood was a school that was also a v■ £ *v** successful family business. The school was flourishing but in 1944, the 4. m « . heirs of Miss Louisa Low and Miss Edith Heywood sold the property on which the school was located. Within a month of the sale, the school relocated to Judge Lockwoods estate on Courtland Avenue. It is said that the school was taken over by a group of Stamford Business Owners, which are listed on a plaque in the entrance of King's High School. In 1969 the school finally settled onto the Walker Estate, which we now know of as the High School campus of King Low Heywood Thomas. In 1975, Thomas merged with Low-Heywood on Newfield Avenue. Information from King archives & an interview done by Vanessa Priou with Elizabeth "Boo" Forester class of 1934.

All KING students returned to school in September excited to embark on their class trips! The freshman class had a close look at the famous Fenway Park, sophomores entered Independence Hall, and juniors got a quick visit of college life. At every stop, on all trips, memories were made, smiles were created, and laughter was shared.

This year's Spirit Week brought a whirlwind of students decked out in footed pajamas, togas, sixties’s garb, and clashir patterns - making it, by far, KING's most unique Spirit Week. After filling up on pancakes from Pajama Day and getting groovy with the seventies on Decade Day, our Vikings were ready to fight the GFA Dragons. As Spirit Day rolled around, it was great to see the whole school showing their Viking Pride by wearing their mighty blue and gold.

This year we had everything from Native Americans to garden gnomes! H owever, the infamous W agner advisory was the most memorable. T heir portrayal o f the stages o f a woman's life was quite enlightning.

This year, King took part in powerful opportunities of community enrichment. Among them were Ethan Zohn, the Co-Founder of Grass Roots Soccer, John Amaechi, cultural dance groups, The Children of Rwanda Choir, and a performance of "The Meeting," the fictional meeting between Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. These assemblies opened our eyes to many different cultures and time periods. The entire community benefitted from these enrichment opportunities when academic routines were put on hold to zoom out and focus in on global affairs.

This fall, the Upper School displayed their talents and acting abilities in "Arsenic and Old Lace" by Joseph Kesselring. Abby and Martha Brewster, two elderly sisters, are famous in their Brooklyn neighborhood for their numerous acts of charity. Unfortunately, their charity includes poisoning lonely old men who come to their home in search of a place to stay. The performance involved students from the entire Upper School, freshmen to seniors. It was another wonderful performance by the King Performing Arts Program.

Winter Concert

This year's winter concert was another successful performance by the Performing Arts Department. The concert included performances by the Jazz Rock Ensembles under the direction of Garrette Mendez and songs by the Choir, directed by the Jacqueline Martino. Some o f the works included "O Holy Night," "Duermete Nino," and "S'Vivon." It was an entertaining evening, as individuals in the singing and musical groups displayed their many abilities.

This winter the Upper School put on an enchanting performance of the musical "Into the Woods." In the first act, the characters set out to achieve their goal of living "Happily Ever After" through familiar routes - Cinderella goes to the ball and captures the heart of Prince Charming, Jack climbs the beanstalk and finds a land of giants and gold, Little Red Riding Hood survives her encounter with the wolf at Grandma's house, and Rapunzel manages to escape her tower. In Act Two, all the characters must deal with what happens after "Happily Ever After." This Stephen Sondheim show brought back many childhood memories as well as questioned the fairy tales we all know well.

It's been 14 years since first stepping inside my Pre-K4 classroom here at KLHT/King/let's just call it 1450 Newfield Avenue. Now, going off to college, what can I say? I'll miss the food. Thanks, everyone, for the memories. Good luck.

I cant believe so many of us have known each ocher for practically our whole lives and now were all leaving =( All 1 know is that 1 never would have made it through without my ladies & my bestest friends! Catherine Heath: thank you bebe so much for always being there for me. Im definitely gonna miss how crazy it was every time we stepped out the door to go out. Dont worry, I promise I will not leave you all by your lonesome next year, 111 come back for you & hopefully 111 be with you know who! Kishauna E Soljour: What can I possibly say about you? First of all, just know that Im gonna miss you & your little midget butt and all of our conversations about trifflin haha well you know. You know Im always gonna be hard on you, but thats only because I love you. Even after highschool Im never gonna tell you the stuff that you wanna hear, but the stuff that you need to hear. Lets be honest, Im CLEARLY gonna still need to keep an eye on you after we graduate! Haha. Miss Nikiki Ellis: Im gonna miss you caressing you softly in math & history class, and dont act like you wont miss it either. Seriously, tell yo mama that when I visit home on break and what not, that Im gonna stop by for some greens, mac & cheese, and some cornbread lol. Amy & Gaby: I love you girls & Im definitely gonna miss you both dearly. Gaby, do me a favor and make sure Amy doesnt get a case against her with all these youngins.Jinrmy: Im gonna miss those daily kisses, those were kinda poppin (not really).KPL: my little brobro, I love you & PLEASE BEHAVE nexc year. Henry VanRoden: Baby, I didnt want to ever have to be parted from you, but the end of the year is near. I will love you forever and always even though you cheat on me & even though a certain Spanish teacher hates you. Ill miss you bebe! Girls Basketball: It sucks that 1 didnt get to play with yall this year like I wanted to, but yall did a great job with or without me. I expect every single one of you to KILL IT next year or else! To all the other loves of my life,111 miss you very very much and good luck next year wherever yall end up: SR,AH, EJ, KG, AS, HP, JJ, MT, SZ, WO, MR, BB, JB, CC, GS, DJ, TT, RH, AM, VL(Hubby), SB, Trippy, MR, SL, WT, GB, JB!

Class of 09 knows whats good. We rocked the vote, we made a senior room and we enforced rank day, our word is law. To my family, thanks for the love and support. Mom and Dad, good call with King, and keep my chained to that desk. Rob and Nick, you guys are more than brothers to me, and that cant change. All hail the pentagon. Andrew: Love our high-fives and vocab study sessions, can life get better? Henry: Im gonna miss visiting the GHS car washes and light saber battles. My clan will defeat yours in the end. Keep on writing so 1 can make fun of you. Ive got a devious plan up my sleeve. Jesse B.: Im ready for round two when you are, keep on slapping me with the pillow, see what happens. Noah: Id prefer this extra crispy, what else? Viking tennis baby! We want Carney! We get better every year, but I doubt thatll continue once 09 is gone. Wallaces advisory is the place to be. Andrew and I will keep singing, doesnt matter if you wont listen. Finally, MPH. Jesse and Sean, you guys are my best friends, I speak the truth. Jesse: Im so glad I passed the song writing pen to you. Im gonna miss our coconut drinks and dream discussions. We gotta keep looking for the clues in Greenwich park. Keep making me feel inadequate with the guitar and 111 keep introducing you to girls. Sean: Hey, can I borrow your I-pod? Dude, Its been real. I couldnt have asked more in a drummer, a friend or a brother. Sorry about ripping off your freckle and making your mother love me more than you. Ill always be there to give you a later curfew or a place to crash. Ill miss our movie reviews and youre stupid rants. S-s-see, this is the problem. Keep playing drummer boy, the rest will follow. MPH, you guys are responsible for me getting through everything the last three years and for meeting the girl(s). It doesnt get much better than this, and if it does, then I cant wait to get out of here. Love you guys, always will. Keep in touch.

I would like to thank the tennis team for the opportunity it gave me to do well in a field where I am not really all that good: athletics. You gave us all of 11 minutes in the hospital that magical day and there have been no dull moments since. As a child, you displayed an incredible personality range, extending yourself at one extreme from being the sweetest, most caring child imaginable to those occasional other moments where I chased you down before you made Summer disappear. You are as loyal and loving a person as they come. You are ferociously competitive, highly gifted and blindingly fast on the soccer field. You have scored many goals but never lost that sweetness. I have never seen a player look more apologetic after knocking an opponent down. Then there are the little things I will miss about you like trying to wake you up or getting you to go to bed. You are a very passionate person. When you find something that moves you, ||| there is nothing you cannot accomplish. I love you madly and I am incredibly proud of you and will always be your biggest cheerleader. Love, Dad. Without you, neither one of us would have achieved the athletic success we have had - you always made us better! You are a loving sister, our best friend and an incredibly fun person. We love you madly, Kimberly & Summer. PS: I will miss you on the field next year, Tiana!!!

I have been playing since I was six years old. But this article is not about me, it’s about Vinny. I will probably miss Vincent when he goes away to college. The house will be so empty without him. If he misses any o f his dreams, I’ll tell him to “Shoot for the moon, even if you miss you’ll land among the stars”. When he goes away to college I will also never hear the “W hat’s for Dinner” c all either. Vincent and I h ave many memories together, Ocean city, Grand Cayman, Florida, Italy, traveling around th e area to go to Ice hockey ga mes and best of all going to Madison Square Garden for Ranger games. But, no matter how old I get I’ll still be his little adopted Vietnamese sister. I also remember when Vinny’s friends were all waiting for m e to come home from Vietnam. Over the years you have shown that in addition to being a loving daughter and sister you epitomize these words. We are proud of you and your accomplishments and see in you a pride in yourself that few young people have. You have showed your strength in many aspects of your life—from your workout regimen with "cowbells" to always having the courage of your convictions. And you demonstrate resolve, having what it takes to set out alone on a quest and finish something that is awe-inspiringyour amazing bicycle trip across America. Your inherent optimism and enthusiasm for life is contagious. You illuminate the world with your smile and radiate serenity in that light. We love you very much. Mom, Dad & Ryan

Fromthe Editors-

This year's yearbook was fun and very interesting to make. As we looked back into our history of the school, we learned quite a lot. Our theme of "Now and Then" had us traveling back in time with old pictures of the school. We got to see how our teachers were like back in the day and got to go down memory lane with some of our classmates' old pictures. We would like to thank everyone who helped us this year to complete the yearbook. We would like to give a huge thank you to Mr. Sinnott for letting us use his room almost everday after school until the late hours of the afternoon. We would like to thank Sandon Hess: without you there would be no yearbook. You always helped whenever we needed you to and did everything we asked without a complaint. We are truly very grateful for your assistance along the way. Todd Martin: THANK YOU so much for our amazing cover. You were always eager to help out with the graphical details we couldn't do and we are so grateful for that. Ms. Thieme: we want to thank you for helping us organize this year and helping us make it a success. To our yearbook staff: thank you to those who did what we asked and helped after school when things got a bit chaotic. We would like to especially thank Amy Mitchell for being a huge help: you are our third editor and we appreciate your willingness to help even if we had to use force. Nikkia Ellis: thank you so much for always completing the task you were asked to do. Even when you were sick, you still managed to get things done. Jacquie King and Kinsey Greenfield: thank you guys so much for helping out with the senior section, we really needed it! You two were great at getting everything done by the deadline and hunting down students for pictures. Hailey Pizzutello: thank you for your excellent work on the faculty section. You got everything done with no complaints and were a great asset to our staff. Jen and Emily Wilson: thank you for always wanting to help out even when you were not even asked. You guys were greatly appreciated. Best of luck to next year's staff.!
