PRESIDENTS REPORT

BOARD OF

DIRECTORS

Welcome to the midyear edition of the Burst, with the cold winter weather here it is a great time to come to the air-conditioned comfort of the club and enjoy a great meal at Rations with their winter specials, or the new Poloy Restaurant for exciting Asian meals, then take time out to relax and watch some of the great sporting events that are on the big screen TV. ANZAC Day was a great success, thanks to CEO Ian Todd, the Management Team and the staff who did such a great job they ensured everyone had an enjoyable day. Thanks also to those Directors who assisted on the day, the ladies of the Sub-Branch Auxiliary did a marvelous job by assisting serving the very welcome breakfast in the various areas of the Club not forgetting the scouts and guides in the marquee, thanks ladies.

Alan Barnes OAM PRESIDENT

The Mother’s Day Breakfast promotion was once again extremely popular with the members, we will be having a similar breakfast promotion for Father’s Day in September, I would suggest you book early to ensure you get a table. With the Government easing restrictions on the hospitality industry the Club will bring back as many of the popular inhouse promotions as we can, such as the 200 club, the July ham raffle and of course the Christmas in July show, check this edition of the Burst and the Club’s website for full details of what is happening at your Club. The Club Management in conjunction with the Club Board of Directors has various plans that we are looking to implement with the easing of restrictions that will enhance the Club for you the members between now and years end. I look forward to seeing you at the Club sometime soon.

you have the drive and desire to become a Director, please see the advertisement below for more details. Joe will continue with the role until a suitable candidate is appointed.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT It was with great anticipation and doubt that we welcomed the return of ANZAC Day for 2021, albeit with restrictions and conditions brought about by COVID-19. We were unsure of the level of commitment from our loyal members to attend this event which is the highlight of our calendar year, due to the uncertainty of people’s health and their just deserved fears. We were unable to conduct our march to Memorial Park and all attendees had to remain seated, but the service still went ahead. I am pleased to report that the day was a remarkable success on all levels, with 500 members present for the service and the hearty breakfast. My thanks must go to you, our members for the commitment to the day and the faith that your Club would adhere to all government restrictions to ensure your safety. My thanks must also go to the Sub Branch members, Ladies of the Sub Branch Auxiliary and my staff for ensuring this day ran smoothly. As we start to come out of the COVID -19 restrictions, your Club will implement some changes in the coming months to each area with a refurnish of the poker machine rooms and the lounges, whilst always being mindful of our member’s concern. One of our Club Directors Joe and partner Angela are packing up and moving north, and whilst we wish them all the best with their new home, we are ably looking for a suitable member to fill the casual vacancy on the Board of Directors, so if you feel

There are many great promotions commencing at your Club now and in the coming months so be sure to check this edition for all details. School holidays will again be upon us and we have returned our kids bingo to assist you with fun activities to keep the kids amused. Two sessions will be held on Tuesday 29th June and 6th July and places will be limited. Book through reception. We will once again hold our huge mid-year ham raffle on Friday 23rd July with seventy-five (75) half hams to give away. This is a very popular event and great value at only $1 for six numbers. On Saturday 24th July join us for our Christmas In July show to see the ever-popular Elton John Tribute Show “Out of the Closet” which had to be cancelled in 2020, this along with dinner and drinks is a great deal for only $55 per person. We will still be restricted by numbers to attend at this stage, so tickets will be limited and I suggest if you are interested to get in quick. I would like to introduce our new caterers for our Asian Restaurant in our Bistro who commenced trading only one week before Anzac Day. Annie & Alex run the new Poloy Restaurant offering a traditional array of Asian cuisine, with an extensive menu, all at very reasonable prices. Be sure to book a table and experience them for yourself. As we move into the winter months, Rations Dining will change its menu to accommodate the warmer winter dishes. Be sure to check out the new menu and watch for the ever-popular weekly specials. These are just a few of the great events happening at Kingsgrove RSL so be sure to read through the magazine to ensure you do not miss out on anything that is currently on offer. We look forward to seeing you in the Club soon Ian Todd Chief Executive Officer

An zac Day 2021

O

T E RRY ’S B I S CUI T S

n 29 November 1966 Lance Corporal Terry Hendle received a tin of homemade Anzac biscuits from his Mum, Adelaide. Terry had been with the 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR) in Vietnam for six months, beginning his tour of duty on 31 May. He was serving near Nui Dat as part of Operation Ingham, a Search and Destroy mission that took place between 18 November and 3 December 1966. Adelaide and Desley, Terry’s sister, regularly sent him homemade Anzac biscuits while he was deployed, which he shared with the men of his unit, 6RAR’s Assault Pioneer Platoon. Terry decided to wait until he finished his patrol that night before opening the tin to enjoy the biscuits. As well as containing a little piece of home, the tin itself was a reminder of Australia, painted with an artist's impression of the Sydney Opera House that was still under construction at the time. Sadly, Terry never got to enjoy his biscuits. At 10.15pm, some Viet Cong came up to the perimeter of 6RAR's position and, when challenged by the sentry, opened fire with an automatic weapon before withdrawing. Terry was one of three men wounded in the attack. He was wounded in the chest or the abdomen (reports and accounts vary); another soldier was wounded in the hand and the third in the shoulder. Terry and one of the other wounded men (presumably the man with the shoulder wound) were winched out for medical treatment just after midnight by a RAAF Iroquois helicopter and taken to the 36th US Evacuation Hospital at Vung Tau. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, at 2.55 in the morning on 30 November, Terry died aged 20. His body was returned to Australia and buried at Pinaroo Lawn cemetery, Queensland. He was survived by a young wife and daughter. Terry’s unopened tin of biscuits was returned to Adelaide after his death. She kept the tin with her the rest of her life and every time she moved house she would carefully carry "Terry's biscuits" in her lap to her new home. After her death, Desley cared for them. The tin has not been opened since Adelaide first sealed it in 1966. It still has its original masking tape and you can feel the weight of the biscuits inside. The Memorial will never open the tin, just as Adelaide and Desley never opened it. This tin became a family Memorial to Terry and is significant for that reason. After Terry’s death, Adelaide and Desley never baked Anzac biscuits again.

MUSHROOM SOUP INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • •

2 tbsp unsalted butter 1 onion chopped 2 garlic cloves minced 400g white mushrooms 200g Swiss Brown/Cremini mushroom 800ml vegetable stock or chicken stock 1/4 tsp salt 1/8 tsp black pepper 200ml cream

GARNISHES/SERVING • • • •

Croutons Cream or extra virgin olive oil for drizzling Parsley roughly chopped Bread for dunking

METHOD STEP 1 Chopping mushrooms: Cut mushrooms into 4 slices, then dice into 3 or 4 pieces. STEP 2 Sauté onion and garlic: Melt butter in a large pot over medium high heat. Add onion and garlic. Cook for 3 minutes until softened, but not golden. STEP 3 Cook mushrooms: Add mushrooms and cook for 10 minutes, stirring regularly. Do not try to brown; they won't as the pot is too crowded but we do not need colour. STEP 4 Simmer 15 min: Add vegetable stock, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, then lower heat to medium and simmer gently for 15 minutes without a lid. STEP 5 Cream: Stir in cream then simmer for another 5 minutes. STEP 6 Blitz: Transfer to a blender (do in batches, if necessary). Remove the cap from the feeding hole in the blender lid, cover the hole with a folded tea towel. Blend until completely smooth. STEP 7 Return to pot, simmer for a minute or two until bubbles caused by blending largely subside and soup is hot. STEP 8 Serve: Ladle into bowls. Garnish with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil or cream, croutons and parsley. Don't forget bread for dunking!

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

HELPING CREATE A SIMULATED WORLD FOR CHILDREN WITH MULTIPLE DISABILITIES

The St George Children with Disabilities Fund is a not-for-profit charity formed in 2005. A small charity which relies on volunteers and has no paid employees. The primary sources of income are grants and fundraising and the purpose is to enhance the quality of life of children with severe and physical disabilities, and their families. In 2020, with the help of the Australian Government’s Stronger Community Programme; the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership; and Bayside and Georges River Councils’ Community Grants programs the St George Children with Disabilities Fund established a new Immersive Room at the St George School, which caters for students K-Y12 with severe and multiple disabilities.

President Alan Barnes, Snr Vice President Tas Aronis and Directors Bruce Geerin and Ryan Asplet

The immersive room provides endless opportunities simply by projecting onto a screen real life scenarios. It’s dynamic, interactive and moving, and can transport the students into another world, or make them part of the story they are reading. The technology creates immersive experiences that teaches the children about life and living which, because of the severity of their disabilities, they cannot experience as others do. Through the Bayside and Georges River Councils’ Community Grants programs, Kingsgrove RSL Club is a proud long time sponsor of the St George Children with Disabilities Fund and were present for the opening of the new immersive room on Wednesday the 19th of May. For more information on the centre or to find out how to donate to this worthy cause please contact Club reception on 93361500 or directly to the fund Chairman Mr. Garry Morris on 0458 583 220.

The Immersive Room transported this student into the home of the three bears where she met up with Goldilocks.

VALE

EDWARD WILLIAM ROY “EDDIE” It is with great sadness we say farewell to Eddie Roy who was a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and at the time of his death he was 86 years old. He met June, his wife and married her when she was 17. They had 61 wonderful years together. They had four children, Greg, Raymond, Mark and Sharonann. They had 7 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren and were a very close family. Eddie had been in a nursing home for a short while before his passing in April. Eddie had been a member of Kingsgrove RSL for 25 years. During those years he had been in the RSL Sub-Branch for 22 years and attended Anzac Days regularly. He was a member of the darts club and could not wait for Friday night so he could play his darts. He was also involved with the Community Group helping when needed for seniors in the community and played Santa Clause and Easter bunny many times since the group started in 2005. He made many friends during his time at Kingsgrove and will be sadly missed by all. Burst Editor Available 24 Hours

TRIVIA JACKPOT WINNERS On Easter Thursday, two lucky winners collected the $448 jackpot in our Thursday night trivia quiz. The answer to the final question in our weekly quiz is always a year of the 20th century. It's usually a pretty tough question but if your team answers it correctly, and you are the only team to do so, you win the jackpot! The question they were asked was: "Colonel Sanders from Kentucky Fried Chicken fame was made a colonel by the Kentucky governor in recognition of his contributions to the state's cuisine in what year of the 20th century?". They correctly answered 1935. Apart from the jackpot, there are lots of prizes to be won each week and great weekly specials at Rations Dining and Poloy Restaurant. The fun starts at 7.30pm every Thursday in the Rations Lounge. Table booking is available through reception on 9336-1500.

POLOY RESTAURANT Alex and Annie Zhao arrived in Australia in 1987 and married the same year. They started running a small Asian Restaurant called The Galaxy Chinese restaurant in Nowra in 1988 which they ran for 9 years. Wanting a break, they moved to Melbourne in 1997, but this was short lived and 2 years later, in 1999 they moved back to Nowra where they started a restaurant in Nowra Bowling Club. In 2009 Alex and Annie joined partnership with Annie’s brother Danny and his wife Annie to open a restaurant in Batemans Bay Solders Club and the restaurant is still owned and operated by Annie and Danny today.

Annie brought her team with her from Nowra and this includes Katie who is front of house, Ricky who is the head chef and Jason who is the second chef. Annie and Alex also hired Michael Chan who is a long-time staff member of all the restaurants who have run our bistro since Freddy and Judy. Poloy Restaurant is serving a traditional Asian cuisine and Annie has kick started her restaurant with many specials for members to come and try for themselves.

Annie & Alex have four children all boys ranging from 21 to 33, who completed all of their schooling in Sydney. As Annie and Alex owned and operated the restaurant in Nowra this meant they could only see the boys on the weekend and during the school week they stayed with Alex's mother in Sydney. After many years of being away from their boys Annie decided it was time to move to Sydney to spend time with them and started looking for a venue to run when they found Kingsgrove RSL Club. Alex still runs Nowra Bowling Club and although Annie’s get to spend all her time with her children, she only gets to see her husband 2 days a week.

Father’s Day SET MENU All Fathers receive a free middy of tap beer or soft drink with the set menu purchase. Bookings can be made through reception or directly to Poloy.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ST URSULAS GIRLS NIGHT IN We just wanted to extend our thanks on behalf of the St Ursula's community for the support from Kingsgrove RSL Club for the 'Girl’s night in' event, it was a massive success and could not have been possible without your support. Again, thank you for your generosity!

The night was a major success, with over 300 guests attending and funds raised totalling over $5,500. This could not have been possible without all the support from the Year 12 Senior Student Leadership Team, Ms Sukkar, and parent and student helpers, who all worked tirelessly to organise this fun interactive event for our community. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our sponsors who donated to our raffle, sausage sizzle and fundraising page, this night could not have run without their support. Sienna Williams

On Tuesday, 27 April, the St Ursula’s community held our Girls’ Night In to raise awareness and money for women’s cancer research in association with Cancer Council Australia. It was an amazing night where mums, grandmothers, aunties, daughters, and sisters came together to enjoy music, food, and dancing. A packed agenda of fun activities. There were many different activities for attendees to enjoy, including a raffle, high tea, lolly bar, hair braiding, bracelet making, plus fun interactive games like ‘knock over the patriarchy’ and lip scrub making.

SUB BRANCH PRESIDENT What a difference twelve months makes in this Covid-19 era, last year there was Just John Graham and I holding an ANZAC Day service under the watchful eye of the police, this year there was in the vicinity of over 400 veterans and families attending the ANZAC Day service at Kingsgrove RSL. Due to Government restrictions, it was decided that there would be no march this year however we will be marching next year. The Sutherland Shire Silver Band were back to support the service as were the cadets from the 233 St George Cadet Unit who made up the Catafalque Party and the Guard. Phil Pollard our Parade Marshall made sure the parade ran smoothly. Peter Merlino did a great job as the MC; the Sing Australia Choir Ashbury lead the service with the hymns. Capt. Tom Pollet Minister at Beverly Hills and Kingsgrove Anglican Church gave the ANZAC Day Address, he was supported by the Rev. David Wallace Senior Minister at Belmore Anglican Church and the Reverend Tevita Siuhengalu of the Uniting Church Kingsgrove and Bexley. The Honorable Linda Burney, the Member for Barton attended and laid a wreath as did Councilor’s Liz Barlow and Ron Bezic from Bayside Council, it is very much appreciated that they took time out of their busy ANZAC Day to attend the Kingsgrove RSL Service. Club Director Matt Ruru laid a wreath on behalf of the New Zealand ex-service men and women. Superintendent Tony Cooke of the St George Area Command laid a wreath on behalf of the Police Force and not forgetting the 4th Kingsgrove Scout Group and West Bexley Girl Guides who were back this year and laid a wreath. What a great job the ladies of the Kingsgrove RSL Auxiliary do on ANZAC Day as they have done for so many years giving up their time to assist in serving breakfast to all the attendees, this year was slightly different with a full breakfast being provided to the Veterans, cadets, Band, and their families and due to space

restrictions in the Club, Egg and bacon rolls were handed out for the remainder who attended the service. The feedback I got was that the rolls were a great substitute. Special thanks to the Club CEO Ian Todd, COO Debbie Harris, the Management Team and our friendly hardworking Club staff who ensured the day was enjoyable for everyone, the SubBranch members are very appreciative of the close cooperation that exists between the Club and the Sub-Branch and is highlighted on ANZAC Day. The Sub-Branch Committee were once again able to conduct ANZAC Day services at various local nursing homes, High and Primary schools, and Preschools. It is a busy time for the Committee with the limited number of members available to do this most important community service. My thanks to those who gave up their time to attend these services. The 2nd May was the date for our Battle of the Coral Sea Commemoration Service, with the cadets from TS Sirius providing the Catafalque Party and the Guard. The guest speaker was CPOET Ron Palmer who gave a highly informative address on the Battle and its importance in helping the allies change the tide of the war in the Pacific. We had members from Belfield and Bankstown RSL’s attend to support the day. Your Sub-Branch representatives attended the FSMDC meeting at Bankstown with the next meeting to be held at Lakemba. Feedback from these meetings and the District President Council (DPC) meetings that I attend as the President of FSMDC are given at the bi-monthly Sub-Branch meetings the next meeting is Monday 28th June 6.30 pm. The next Sub-Branch Commemoration Service and lunch is for VP Day to be held on Sunday 15th August, medals to be worn. “When in doubt, tell the truth.” Alan R. Barnes OAM JP President

S P O R T S A D M I N I S T R AT O R The days are getting dark earlier and the weather is getting colder but no matter what the weather brings our Sporting Clubs still manage to meet rain, hail or shine. At the moment due to various circumstances, we only have 2 out of 4 Sporting Clubs operating which is the Golf Club and the Darts Club. These 2 Clubs are enjoying the comradeship of meeting with their Club members to compete in their relevant sports which you will read about in the Darts & Golf Clubs reports. Unfortunately, the Snooker Club is still unable to resume their Friday night Competition but hopefully eventually they will be 24

able. Sadly, due to some issues that arose in the Fishing Club committee the Fishing Club has stopped meeting for the time being but hopefully also will be able to work things out and get back to what they do best. If you are interested in joining the Dart’s or Golf Club, please contact reception and they will advise you about who to contact. Heather Shepherd Sports Administrator

Late April 2021 and being a non-calendar outing, the weather forecast was for once, perfect. Clear blue skies, no winds, warm weather and overall perfect fishing conditions.

Good morning everyone well here we are again another fine edition of the burst magazine. I believe we have gone digital with the Burst, how technology has changed the way we live, next we will have robots pulling our buggy’s, can’t wait for that!

A number of Fishing Club members including 3 Fishing Club Life members, stayed for a week at KRSL’s Shoalhaven Heads units, reportedly having a fantastic time. Jim Hall, Bill Hall, John & Carol Shaw, Trevor & Diane Judge, Gary Wade, Peter Joseph and other friends, had the time of their lives. Over 200 differing species of fish were caught throughout the week and distributed between all – everyone had a good feed. In May 2021, Jim Fisher decided to leave Sydney and with the borders finally open, thought he’d try fishing further north, this time around the Gladstone region trying for an elusive barramundi. No luck for Jim, but reportedly had a good time getting away and having a go, using different rods, reels and rigs. Jim is already planning his next big trip away to try again. Plans are underway for ongoing Fishing Club outings and Charters. See you on the water. Lady Nemo

DARTS CLUB As I write this quarterly report the Darts Club is grieving one of its own. Eddie Roy passed away in April after a short stay in a nursing home. Eddie was one of our Darts Club characters who enjoyed his darts when he was playing. He could certainly throw a mean dart. Our condolences go out to June and her family at this time. I know Eddie will be enjoying his darts in heaven. Our competition team has finished second in the St. George and Sutherland Shire competition and is heading for the finals next week. Good luck team. Our next competition starts in July and runs till November. If anyone would like to join our Darts Club on Friday night socials and also play competition just come and see us down in the Diggers room on a Friday night after 7.30pm. It is $5.00 to play on Friday nights and registration is to be done by 7.45pm. You don’t have to be a competition player to play on Friday nights, anyone can play. We have fun nights once a month and theme nights with presents throughout the year. If you would like to join us you are most welcome.

Our championships are played at the end of July and beginning of August. We have open, men and women’s singles, men and women’s doubles and mixed doubles that are played on these days. Heats are usually the first week and finals the second week. If we can get through them in one day we will do so. Hope to see you on Friday nights. Lynda Lake THE BURST

COMMUNITY GROUP It is with great sadness that I inform you that one of our original members of the Community Group, Eddie Roy, passed away in April. He has been in our group since 2005 and stood in as Santa Clause at our morning teas and delivery of presents to the nursing homes at Christmas. He was also a bunny at Easter. Our condolences go to his wife June and family at this time. He will be missed by all of us. Easter had with it mixed emotions as some of the nursing homes still had restrictions on us going into them. At these homes we left chocolate bunnies at reception for the residents. At other nursing homes we could finally go in and mix with the residents and enjoyed the hour with them. They were pleased to see us as well. The community group has advertising at the Club and we have had a few people donating wool and other goodies to us. We appreciate this as we are helping seniors in our community and we would like to thank you very much for your donations. Our group will crochet or knit items for members if they wish, just

leave details at reception and we can get in touch with you. A few things we do are: scarves $15.00, beanies $12.00, knee rugs $25.00, football rugs $30.00, coathangers $2.50. If we can help you to solve presents for family and friends we will do so and all money goes to charity. The ladies have been busy with organising presents for the nursing homes for Christmas and are well under way to trying to achieve to make 500 presents for them. We enjoy what we do and to see the looks on faces at Christmas is very rewarding. The Kingsgrove RSL Club is very supportive with what we do and we would like to thank them for that support during all the years we have been doing this. If you would like to join our group, we meet every two months, you are more than welcome. Inquire for details at Club reception or ring on 02 9336 1500. Thanks once again for your support. The Auxiliary would like to take this opportunity to thank Pat Graham for her valuable time and generosity during her time as President. During her tenure, Pat was always available and her hard work and contribution to the Auxiliary was most appreciated. Thank you, Pat. Yvonne Talbott Coordinator

Thank you also to the club staff for their help and especially to Sarah for her assistance. It is sad news that a former member of the Auxiliary, Maria Ryan, passed away on 12th April. Maria was a member for many years and was President for two of those years. Maria provided many prizes for our fundraising with her excellent craft work of 26
