PRESIDENTS REPORTS
BOARD OF
DIRECTORS
Welcome to the first edition of the Burst for 2020, I trust you all took advantage of all the great promotions held at the Club over the Christmas New Year period. What unbelievable weather we have been having, firstly we have had this long running drought for which we have been raising money to donate to the farmers, then along comes the catastrophic bush fires and our Rural fire Service volunteers and our Fire and Rescue heroes do what they do so well in fighting the fires for months on end. Then comes the welcome flooding rains, Dorothea MacKellar described our country so accurately when she wrote “I love a sunburnt country, of droughts and sweeping plains, her beauty and her terror’ is exactly what Australia is however I’m sure we would not have it any other way." I am very pleased to report that the Club made a net profit before tax of $520K for 2019, this excellent result was achieved through the hard work of the CEO Ian Todd and the Management Team, the Board, our dedicated staff and of course the patronage of you our members. A reminder to all members that voting in the Club Elections will be held over two days, Friday 13th and Saturday 14th March, please take the time to cast your vote as it is your opportunity to decide who will be on the Club Board as they set the future direction of the Club.
Alan Barnes PRESIDENT
Unfortunately the Club’s Senior Vice President and Life Member John Graham resigned from the Board in December due to health reasons, I would like to thank John for his many years of dedicated service to the Board and the Club, John was always ready to assist and guide the newer members on the Board and was always willing to provide me with very sound advice, thanks John we trust that your health will improve and we will continue to see you around the Club. The Club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) is on the 31st March at 7.00pm, this gives you, the members, the opportunity to raise any questions in relation to the Boards' direction and governance of the Club, we would welcome your attendance.
Heather Shephard VICE PRESIDENT
Our most important day of the year for the Club comes April 25th, ANZAC Day, as an RSL Club we are very proud to recognize our current Defence Personnel, our ex-service men and women and show them how much we respect them and thank them for their service. Details of ANZAC Day events are on page 16. The Sub-Branch, Women’s Auxiliary have done a great job during 2019 in looking after their members and the Kingsgrove RSL Club Community Group ensured the local nursing homes benefited from their support. I look forward to seeing you at the Club some-time soon. “The best way to be understood is to be understanding”

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT It is with pleasure I present to the members the Financial Report for year ending 31st December 2019, with a net profit before tax of $519,583. The Club has had a steady year with growth in trading in all areas of the Club especially food sales at Rations Dining providing an increase in revenue to $11.3M an increase of 5% which has been in contrast to the trends currently observed in the club industry. The Club has experienced increases in expenses to achieve this including additional employee wages, cost of raw materials and member services like the courtesy bus. Our Earnings before Depreciation and Finance costs are $1.9M. The Club has continued our strategy on depreciation of property, plant and equipment with a non cash expense of $1.2M and reduction of the Club’s borrowing to $3.2M a reduction of 17%. Due to very low interest rates on offer the Club has reduced our investments to $450K. Overall the Club is in a very strong financial position with Total Equity of $21.8M. A copy of the Club’s Financial Report for 2019 containing the Directors’ Report and The Auditor’s report is available on the Club website. The Club’s membership also achieved good growth of 7.5% and now stands at; Financial Members Life Members Associate Members Total Membership

To be carried each Ordinary Resolution requires a vote in favour by a simple majority of those eligible members present and voting at the meeting.
LIFE MEMBERSHIP RESOLUTION: That Heather Shepherd member no: 3491 be elected a Life Member of Kingsgrove R.S.L. Club Ltd. Under rule 6.11 of the Club’s Constitution a Financial Ordinary Member who has rendered distinguished and valued service to the Club may be elected to Life membership. To be carried, the Life membership resolution requires a vote in favour by at least a 75% majority of those eligible members present and voting at the meeting. The Board recommends this resolution to the members.
SPECIAL RESOLUTION 1: That the Constitution of Kingsgrove R.S.L. Club Ltd be amended by: •
Deleting rule 8.5 in its entirety and replacing it with the following new rule 8.5: “8.5 The Board, the Chief Executive Officer, or the senior employee on duty at the relevant time, may cancel the membership of an Honorary Member or Temporary Member at any time without being required to give reasons.”

“22.14 At the Annual General Meeting immediately following a General Election, the Returning Officer (or their authorised delegate):
“9.3 A member may only resign their membership by: (a) giving written notice to the Club, and such resignation will take effect on the date it is received by the Club; or (b) by returning their membership card to the Club and stating (verbally or in writing) that such return constitutes their resignation as a member, in which case such resignation takes effect on the date the card is given to the Club.” •

•
Deleting rules 16.2 and 16.3 in their entirety and replacing them with the following new rules 16.2 and 16.3: “16.2 Notwithstanding anything else in this rule 16, the Board may at any time appoint a Director pursuant to section 30(1)(b1) of the Registered Clubs Act, provided that the total number of Directors must not exceed any maximum prescribed in accordance with Section 10(1)(k1) of the Registered Clubs Act. 16.3 The Board will be elected biennially at each General Election in accordance with rule 22.”
•

Deleting rule 22.14 in its entirety and replacing it with the following new rule 22.14:
(a) shall declare the result of the General Election; and (b) if vacancies on the Board remain after the General Election, shall call for nominations in accordance with rule 22.9 to fill such vacancies and conduct a ballot if required.” •
Deleting rules 28.2 to 28.4 (inclusive) in their entirety and replacing them with the following new rule 28.2 and 28.3: “28.2 The members may request the Board to call a General Meeting in accordance with Section 249D of the Act. 28.3 The members may call a General Meeting only in accordance with section 249E or Section 249F of the Act.”
and re-numbering rules 28.5 to 28.7 as rules 28.4 to 28.6 accordingly.
If passed, this Special Resolution would amend the Constitution as follows: • Rule 8.5 will provide that Honorary memberships and Temporary memberships may be cancelled by the CEO or senior manager on duty. In practice, it is more likely that management will need to deal with any immediate issues concerning these members, rather than the Board. This would not change the rights of Full Members. • Currently, members can only resign in writing. The amendment to rule 9.3 would allow a member to resign verbally and hand in their membership card. • Rule 10 has been simplified so that registers must be maintained in accordance with the Registered Clubs Act. • Under the Registered Clubs Act, the Board may appoint up to 2 Ordinary Members to be Directors, provided that there are never more than 9 Directors on the Board at any one time. This is deemed to be a rule of the Club under section 30(1) of the Registered Clubs

Act, and is included in the new Constitution in rule 16.2 accordingly. Important matters for members to be aware of include: i. This rule was introduced under the Registered Clubs Act to allow the Board to appoint a person who has skills and/or qualifications which will be useful to the Club at the relevant time (for example, if the Club is engaging in a major project). ii. A person appointed under this rule may be appointed for a term of no more than 3 years, and is not eligible for re-appointment at the end of that term (though they may stand for election by the members in future if they are eligible under the Constitution). iii. The Club may request any person being appointed to disclose if they have ever been declared ineligible by the Independent Liquor & Gaming Authority in the past to hold office as a secretary or member of the governing body of any registered club. The person must make the disclosure within 7 days. iv. Within 21 days after their appointment, a notice must be posted on the Club noticeboard and website which sets out the reasons for the person’s appointment, their relevant skills and qualifications, and any payments they will receive (such as, the honoraria for Directors approved by the members at the Annual General Meeting). If the person has made a disclosure of past ineligibility, then that information must also be posted up for the information of members. Rule 16.3 is amended to remove references to the changes to the Constitution in 2009. Board elections will continue to be held biennially. The new rule19.5 will provide that if Board numbers fall below a quorum (5 Directors) then the Board may call a General Meeting for any purpose, call a General Meeting specifically for the purpose of the members electing additional Directors, or fill the casual vacancies. This is to ensure that the Board can continue to function appropriately. Rule 22.14 would be amended so that the Returning Officer (or their authorised delegate if the Returning Officer is unable to be present for some unforeseen reason, such as illness) will declare the Board election results and conduct any necessary ballot for nominations from the floor of the AGM to fill any remaining vacancies on the Board. Rules 28.2 to 28.4 have been substantially simplified, and members will be able to request, or call, a General Meeting of the Club in accordance with the procedures in the Corporations Act.
SPECIAL RESOLUTION 2: That the Constitution of Kingsgrove R.S.L. Club Ltd be amended by: •

•
Deleting the reference to ‘rule 22.15(b)’ from rule 23.2, and replacing it with a reference to ‘rule 22.5’, so that rule 23.2 reads as follows: “23.2 The Board may appoint a person who meets the requirements set out in rule 22.5 to fill a casual vacancy. This does not change the rights of Full Club Members and Life Members admitted before the end of the Annual General Meeting in 2020, who are only required to have at least 3 years’ continuous financial Full Club or Life membership in order to exercise those rights.
NOTES ON SPECIAL RESOLUTIONS • Each Special Resolution is proposed as a Special Resolution in accordance with rule 42 of the Constitution, and to be carried, the Special Resolution requires a vote in favour by a 75% majority of those members present and voting at the meeting. MEET CHARLIE KAZZI CHARLIE KAZZI WAS PRACTICALLY BORN INTO THE SPORT OF BOXING, DUE TO HIS DAD, KINGSGROVE RSL MEMBER PETER KAZZI, BEING A PROFESSIONAL BOXER. From the time Charlie was able to walk at the age of one, he would stroll down to the gym, located in the basement of their home, and spend most of his time punching the bags or balls or would watch the Sparring/ Training taking place. He spent a lot of time in the Gym and would enjoy putting the Gloves on and training, to the point of doing it nearly every day. Charlie basically grew up around the boxing scene and admiring the boxing fights and this became second nature to Charlie. NSW Law does not allow a fighter to fight until he is aged 14, so Charlie would travel to Queensland to fight and had his first amateur fight at the age of 10 in Brisbane. He won that fight with a 2nd round TKO. After a few more fights, Charlie later went on to win the 40kgs Queensland Amateur Novice Boxing Titles and then the 44kg Australian Amateur Boxing Titles in Melbourne at the age of 12. Charlie continued to fight and won the Queensland U’13s title the following year. At the age of 14 he was allowed to fight in NSW which was his dream. He made a mark in his first NSW debut fight and then would later go on to win the NSW Title that year and qualify to compete and represent NSW in the U’14s 54Kgs Schoolboy division. Upon entering the National Titles, he fought and beat the Victorian Champion to make it to the Quarter finals and then qualified for the Finals. Charlie went on to fight and beat the Western Australian Champion to win the Australian Title at 54kgs. Charlie was a standout in the course of the Australian Titles and was selected in the NSW Futures Training camp as a potential prospect for future Commonwealth and Olympic Games where the selected few are to attend the AIS in Canberra.

HONOUR ROLL RESTORED TO COMMEMORATE THE MEN WHO SERVED THE EMPIRE It may be difficult for people of our times to understand the enthusiasm with which so many young men rushed to join the Australian Imperial Forces at the outbreak of war. Clearly many responded to the call to serve King and Empire in the hour of need. On the home front families were inspired by the heroism of Gallipoli and the Western Front, shocked by the terrible casualties and later divided by the bitterness of the conscription controversies. After the Great War of 1914-1918 communities organised to erect memorials of those who served. Kingsgrove’s memorial consisted of an Honour Roll, being a painted sign board, firstly displayed at Kingsgrove Public School on the schools Stoney Creek Road frontage and then, to halt weather damage, was relocated to a wall under the school veranda. The Honour Rolls modest nature may be due to Kingsgrove’s lack of community identity, being at the edge of three (3) municipalities, and more established

suburbs would commemorate their hero’s in a more impressive, substantial and lasting form. This memorial was sponsored by the school’s P & C Association, which at the time was probably the only community type organisation in the suburb. At the unveiling ceremony on Saturday 9th August 1919, P & C President Charles A. Howard explained the memorial would show appreciation to those brave lads who had gone to fight for our liberty and freedom of the world. The sign has since vanished leaving Kingsgrove with no memorial listing the names of those who served in the Great War and of the 54 names on the board, 14 had been killed. The Kingsgrove RSL Club Ltd in collaboration the Armistice Centenary Grants Program have replaced the Honour Roll and it is now proudly on display as the front of Kingsgrove RSL Club.

MEET MATILDA ASPLET MATILDA ASPLET DAUGHTER OF KINGSGROVE RSL CLUB MEMBER RYAN ASPLET, HAS BEEN BECOME THE FIRST EVER GIRL TO ATTAIN A WOMEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE SCHOLARSHIP AT KINGSGROVE NORTH HIGH SCHOOL. Identified by NRL development officers in the St George area as a possible future Women’s National Rugby League Player, Matilda hopes to chase her love of the sport throughout her schooling and into a profession if possible. It may have been destiny for Matilda to follow in the joy of rugby league as she is the first girl in the Asplet clan in four generations, growing around the footy field watching and playing footy with her dad, brother and cousins. Having now played for the past two years in the under 11’s and under 12’s for the Kingsgrove Colts Junior Ruby League Football Club, where Matilda achieved awards for Best and Fairest for her team and Mod Player of the Year for the Kingsgrove Colts, first female to win this award. Matilda is willing to work hard and enjoy what comes next in her rugby league future with aspirations to follow her idols Maddie Studdon, current Australian International Women footballer and Ruan Sims former Australian International Women footballer and hopefully play in the NRL Women’s Premiership and for the Jillaroos. Like her family we too look forward with excitement for Matilda’s rugby league future.

SUB BRANCH PRESIDENT Welcome to the first 2020 Sub-Branch Burst report, what a start to the year what with the drought, the catastrophic bush fires and more recently the incredible rain/flooding that we had in February we really are a country with incredibly diverse weather. As most of you are aware the new Constitution for the NSW RSL was officially implemented on the 1st December 2019, yes it does require some amendments, these will be done in October at the NSW RSL Congress in Newcastle. Both John Graham and I were at Albury late October when the historic vote was taken to approve the new constitution. We both have been very much involved in the framing of the Standing Operating Procedures (SOP’s) which will replace the current By-Laws. The RSL can now get back to doing what it does best and that is looking after the welfare of ex-service men and women and their families.
by Bass Hill RSL in November, Ingleburn RSL in February and in March we will be at Bankstown RSL. At the Ingleburn RSL meeting I was honored to receive my fifty (50) year membership certificate of the NSW RSL, the presentation was done by the NSW RSL Acting President Mr. Ray James. My special thanks to John Graham who organized the certificate and the presentation. Being the first edition of the Burst for 2020, I will take the opportunity to thank our Secretary Peter Merlino and Treasurer Peter Burgess; they do an enormous amount of work behind the scenes to make your Sub-Branch run efficiently. Vice Presidents Neil Arena who has not been well lately and Phil Pollard and the Committee who pitch in giving up their own time to attend member’s funerals, school and nursing home commemoration services.
The Women’s Auxiliary are now allowed to fund raise so they will be back in force with their usual Mother’s Day and Father’s Day raffles so do buy a ticket as all proceeds go to various Veteran ‘s charities that are approved by RSL NSW. On behalf of the Sub-branch Committee we offer our condolences to the families and friends of all those Sub-branch members who have passed away since the last report. “The easiest way to get into trouble is to be right at the wrong time”
Alan R. Barnes JP President

Congratulations go to the Golf Club who won the Club’s Round-Robin and to all Sporting Clubs that participated in the competition, it was very close with all the Sporting clubs being within a few points of each other.
I must thank all the members who attended the Stars Tribute Night in December and it was pleasing to see so many members from the Clubs sporting bodies in attendance. This coupled with Club Members also in attendance, great food and entertainment ensured a great night was had by all.
This year’s Round Robin is approaching fast with the Fishing competition being the first to be held and is
The other Round Robin competitions will be held later in the year which are really entertaining nights.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who participated in the running of our Sporting bodies
during the past 12 months without your efforts our members would not have had a wide range of activities to participate in. To our members who are not involved in any of these groups, I urged you to come along and try your nominated sport and I can guarantee you will enjoy yourself and make many new friends. FISHING CLUB 2020 competition has commenced and lots of fish finally being weighed in at the January and February outings. Hopefully this year brings more accommodating weather conditions than in previous years. Congratulations to junior member George and his dad Tracy Braithwaite on their kingfish caught locally and Peter Joseph on his fantastic 15kg and 17kg Kingfish caught a little further out – in New Zealand. Well done everyone.
Junior member George Braithwaite with his local Kingfish catch.
We have had 9 new fishing club members recently join our club, including 4 junior members very keen to cast a line or two in the hope of winning the “junior competition” award. Club Champion for 2019 was Ian Leslie announced at our well-attended Presentation night and later acknowledged at KRSL’s Stars Tribute night. Our AGM was held late 2019 “welcome aboard” newly elected committee members Jim Hall, John Shaw, Kristy Shaw and Carmen Bezzina. Fishing charters are proving popular with four being scheduled in 2020 leaving from Wollongong, Birchgrove and Cronulla wharves. Interested participants should contact Ian Leslie, Charter Coordinator (or message left at KRSL Reception) for details. Regular updates from members are posted electronically via our KRSL Fishing Club Facebook page and make for some great reading and photos taken.

DARTS CLUB By the time this goes to print our B Grade team will have started their summer competition in the St. George and Sutherland Shire Association in February. Our B Grade team won the “Alf Bonning” award in the winter competition which means they were the team that won the most single games played during the season. Congratulations to all who played in the team. If you would like to play social darts on Friday nights, we start at 7.30pm in the Diggers Lounge for registration, and start playing at 8pm. It is a fun night and nothing too serious (after all it’s not competition on this night). We have different nights during the year which the committee arrange and a good time is had by all. You can leave your name at Club reception and we will get in touch with you or just come down on Friday nights and introduce yourself to one of us.
Well done, Kris Meyer, Glenn Roberts, Donna Aronis, Cheryl Langstaff, Harry Langstaff, Lynda Lake, Robert Mahon (left to right), for accepting the Trophy for the most games won by a team during the last competition!
Good luck to our B Grade team in the competition.

COMMUNITY GROUP The ladies have started the year organising presents for Christmas already. We have 300 presents to do so we are off to a good start. We are doing coat hangers, bags, washers and fingerless gloves. We will put soap bars with some of these presents. During the year we do sets for premmie babies, scarfs and hats for cancer patients, rugs for the
RSPCA. At the moment we are doing knee rugs for elderly patients in hospital and raindrops for the Easter show to be sold for a gold coin donation towards water for farmers. We have two luncheons a year where we invite nursing homes and seniors in the area to come and enjoy themselves. Everyone goes home with a gift.
As you can see we keep busy so if you would like to join our group, leave your name at reception and we will get in touch with you. We meet every two months at the Club and have discussions on what we have done and what we are going to do. Thank you to everyone who has donated to us.
