PRESIDENTS REPORTS Welcome to edition one of the Burst for 2017, after all the excitement of 2016 with the completion of our great club makeover it will be hard to match in 2017 however with all promotions, entertainment including monthly live bands planned for the coming year Kingsgrove RSL Club is the place to be in 2017. The year has already kicked off in great fashion with our super Australia Day promotion with the mega raffle, this was closely followed by Chinese New Year and now coming up on Sunday 26th February is the day one member will win the beautiful Toyota Corolla Accent Hatch that is currently on display in the club reception area. The Club now has two great food dining areas, our newest being Rations Café with its exciting menu, you can dine in the club café area or enjoy your meals on the veranda overlooking the park and of course we have the Table 15 Bistro
who have put together a new menu as well for those who enjoy a delightful Chinese meal, I can personally recommend both dining areas, come and give them a try, bring your friends. Check the menus on the Club website. Please check this edition of the Burst for the weekly entertainment guide, upcoming promotions, ANZAC Dinner and importantly ANZAC Day scheduling details. Note there are no Board Elections this year however I do ask that you attend the Annual General meeting which is being held on Tuesday 21st March at 7.00pm, this is a good opportunity for members to voice their opinion on any club issues. Notwithstanding the disruption created by the renovations during 2016 the club has had a very successful year, thanks to you the members. The
club has achieved a profit before income tax of $1.22 million which is an excellent result. My thanks to the General Manager Ian Todd, the Management Team, the dedicated staff and the Board who were very much involved in the whole process. The Sub-Branch, Women’s Auxiliary and the Kingsgrove RSL Community Group continue to do a great job in looking after their members and the Community through the local nursing homes, schools and hospitals to name a few who benefited from their support. AGENDA
1. Confirmation of Minutes of the Annual General Meeting held on Tuesday 22nd March 2016. 2. To receive and adopt the Balance Sheet of the Club as at 31st December 2016, and the Profit and Loss Statement of the Club for the year ended on that date, together with the Reports of the Directors and Auditors, President and General Manager. 3. Notice of Business and Resolutions to be dealt with at the Annual General Meeting shall be handed to the Secretary at least fourteen days prior, and in the case of Special Resolutions, at least twenty-eight days prior to the date of such Meeting.
SPECIAL BUSINESS - NOTICE OF RESOLUTIONS Pursuant to the Registered Clubs Act, 1976, as amended, the Members hereby approve for the 2017 Board year the following resolutions to cover expenses relating to Directors and others deriving directly or indirectly any profit, benefit or advantage not equally offered to every member. RESOLUTION 1. The members hereby approve the payment of the following honorariums per annum plus superannuation if applicable to the Directors in respect of services rendered to the Club, President $8,120, Vice Presidents $3,310 and Other Directors $2,935 to be paid quarterly in arrears. RESOLUTION 2. The members hereby approve the payment of the following honorarium plus superannuation if applicable of $640 per annum to the Sports Administrator in respect of services rendered to the Club to be paid quarterly in arrears. RESOLUTION 3. The members hereby approve the expenditure by the Club with respect to the following matters for the 2017 Board year. i. The cost of Director’s meals and drinks after each Board of Directors meeting. ii. Reasonable out of pocket expenses incurred by Directors either within the Club or elsewhere in relation to such duties approved by the Board of Directors. iii. Reasonable expenses associated with the supply of a Club blazer, trousers, skirt, shirt and tie to each Director. iv. Reasonable costs of Directors attending ClubsNSW meetings and training seminars, and other association meetings and training seminars approved by the Board of Directors. v. Reasonable costs of end of year function with spouses. vi. Subsidies granted to intra-club sporting groups. vii. Presentations to members and others for services deemed by the Board of Directors to be of a benefit to the Club or community. viii. The provision of seven (7) especially reserved parking spaces in the Club car park.
EXPLANATORY NOTES OBJECT: The members acknowledge that the benefits in Resolutions 1, 2, and 3 above are not available to members generally, but only to those members who are elected to the Board of Directors of the Club, and those members directly involved in the above activities. Resolution 1 and 2. The Board seeks an increase in the Directors honorariums and Sports Administrator honorarium in accordance with CPI of 1.5%. NOTE. To be carried each resolution requires a simple majority of those members present and voting at the meeting.

GENERAL M ANAGERS REPORT It is with pleasure I present my report to accompany the Financial Report for 2016 year whereby your Club reported a net profit before tax of $1.22million. This was a very pleasing result considering the Club was under renovations for ten months of the year with over one third of different sections of the Club closed during this time. Notwithstanding the renovations, our income rose by 5% however expenses rose by 7% many related with the renovations as we incurred preparation costs as to ensure the impact to our members was minimal plus increased financial costs. Your Club has significantly invested back into the facilities of the Club house with the $4million renovations and an additional $1million is plant and equipment. To finance these renovations we have utilised a secured loan of $3.5million, lease facility and cash reserves. We firmly believe the current level of debt is very manageable and your club will be able to reduce this debt significantly in the future to be able to undertake other capital investment projects. The Balance Sheet is very healthy with assets of $22million and liabilities of $6million, with an overall equity of $16million.

David Elliot MP and local Federal Member Hon. Linda Burney, a proud moment for your Club to showcase our stunning renovations. It was also a pleasure to present to Pat Willoughby and family a memorial plaque (later erected in the Club) to honour the devotion of past director Barry Willoughby who along with the other directors over the past four years was integral to the renovation design and construction. It goes without saying that we are proud of the final result of the Club renovations and also to the commitment of the Club Board of Directors, Debbie Harris and our management team. We are grateful for the professionalism of builders Boden Projects and Atlas Architects. But I thank the understanding and patience of you our members. I am sure we all agree the result was worth the effort. Our Annual General Meeting to be held on Tuesday 21st March at 7pm in the Digger Lounge. All financial members are welcome to attend.

Kingsgrove RSL Club has recently made a special recognition of service to one of its long time standing employees. A first for KRSL, we are celebrating 30 years of service from General Manager Ian Todd who commenced work at the club in March 1986 as a casual bar man as a way of earning extra money whilst he did his Accountancy Course. Ian went permanent in October 1989 and held various positions within the club including cellar, bar, poker machine attendant and gaming manager through to July 1994 when he applied for and was given the Assistant Secretary Managers role working with Barry Stevenson, General Manager.
In early 1999 Barry decided to retire and the Board at the time opened the General Managers position to the industry, there were six very qualified applicants including one from interstate however the Board found out from all their extensive interviewing that the person who was the best applicant and has proved to be one of our best General Managers was Ian Todd. Ian has gone on to justify the decision by ensuring Kingsgrove RSL Club went from strength to strength over the years to where we are today and it must be said the latest renovation has given the members a great club. Ian gained his Active Certified Club Manager ACCM in 1994, he is also the Bayside Council Club Grants President and the St. George Cronulla Sutherland Zone President for the Club Managers Association. On behalf of the members, Board of Directors, Management and staff we take this opportunity to thank Ian for his tireless, devoted service to Kingsgrove RSL and look forward to the next 30 years and what may be in store for this great club.

MINI EASTER CHEESECAKE NESTS Celebrate Easter with a sumptuous spread and follow up with these mini cheesecake nests, the perfect ending to your Sunday Easter feast. Your family and friends will love them so much that you may make them though out the year! INGREDIENTS - SERVES: 12 • • • • • • •

500gm cream cheese, at room temperature 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 2 eggs 12 vanilla-flavoured, wafer-style cookies 2 cups shredded coconut 1 cup egg shaped chocolate candies

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat cream cheese, sugar and vanilla with a mixer until well blended. Add eggs and mix just until blended. 2. Place one cookie on the bottom of each paper-lined muffin cup. Top with cream-cheese mixture about two-thirds of the way up the cup. Bake for 20 minutes until centers are almost set. 3. Remove from oven and cool. While cakes are cooling, turn the oven up to 400 degrees. Spread coconut onto a large shallow baking sheet. Toast in the oven until coconut is golden brown, about 7 minutes. Cool. 4. When cheesecakes have cooled, top each one with coconut and chocolate eggs. Plate and serve.

RATIONS IS DISHING UP TO BE A DELIGHT FOR KINGSGROVE R AT I O N S I S THE EXCI TING NEW DINING E X P E R I E N C E AT KIN GSGROVE RSL CLUB. As part of Kingsgrove RSL club 2016 renovations, Rations Café and Dining opened its doors to the public in December and is fast becoming a popular local dining destination says Kingsgrove RSL Club General Manger Ian Todd. “The response from the patrons has been fantastic, with Rations offering members and guest a second eatery and a western menu to choose from. The newly furbished dining lounge at Rations delivers a relaxed, family friendly atmosphere, to enjoy the flavoursome food on the menu and the intimacy to appreciate it alone or with a company of friends.” Returning member Ms Carylanne Brookes, is a Bexley local that is so impressed with the Club’s renovations and quality of food, she’s made Rations a weekly lunch spot. Ms Brookes said “I live locally and it’s lovely to return to Kingsgrove RSL Club after many years. Kingsgrove RSL club was becoming dated and needed a comprehensive upgrade. The transformation since the renovation is astounding! The range of spaces to eat, drink, and be entertained have enriched the club, from comfortable seating to the open outlooks. is a great alternate choice to the Club’s Brasserie, and every dish I’ve ordered so far is simply delicious.” Rations has enhanced Kingsgrove RSL Club’s dining preferences with the help of the Club’s newly appointed head chef Sumit Kumar. According to Sumit the Rations menu is an inspired modern take on Australian classics.
“In addition to the perennial favourites like Parmigiana, Chicken Caesar Salad and Spaghetti bolognaise, I wanted to introduce modern twists like coleslaw to the traditional chicken burger and a stack of char grilled vegetables instead of a bland vegetable patty to the vegetable burger,” he said. “I want Rations to offer patrons quality fresh food, full of flavour and still be affordable for the family to dine out in a relaxed club environment.” Mr Kumar came to Australia at age 18, graduating from the Windsor institute
of culinary excellence and worked his way through five star hotels and venues all across Sydney, primarily for the SSP group. “SSP are a multinational company, which operates branded catering at over 300 airport and transit spaces around the world as a concessionaire” he said. Rations menu and internationally inspired weekly specials are a culmination of over 6 years of Kumar’s hospitality and cultural experience. As the first directly operated eatery by the Kingsgrove RSL Club, Rations Café and Dining is still developing its 3 month young experience and is hoping to open for breakfast on weekends in the new future. S P O R T S A D M I N I S T R AT O R R E P O R T Firstly, let us congratulate all our Sporting Clubs for their effort in 2016 with special thanks to the Darts Club and Snooker Club who were greatly disadvantaged in 2016 due to renovations. However, the Club has retained five dartboards in the Diggers Lounge and two snooker tables in the Sports Lounge.
“Despite these disruptions due to the Club renovations all our Sporting Clubs were able to hold their championship competitions. Congratulations to all our Sporting Club Champions of 2016.”
The Fishing Club won the Round Robin competition for 2016. They performed well across all sports and were proud recipients of the Harry Fanning Shield at the Stars Tribute Night in December.
We look forward to a better year in 2017 with the new rooms for Darts and Snooker. It’s a great time to join any or all of our sporting Clubs so you too can enjoy the camaraderie and fun.
2016 was a sad year with the loss of our friend Barry Willoughby who undertook the role of Sports Administrator with gusto, but he would be proud of the ever-increasing numbers in our Sporting Clubs and the results that were achieved by the years end. It was my privilege to act as the Sports Administrator for remainder of the year and work with the great members who volunteer for our Sporting Club committees.
It is also a pleasure to welcome Heather Shepherd, current Vice President of the Club to the role of Sports Administrator. We wish Heather the very best of luck.

Darts social nights returned on the 13th January it was great seeing all our regular members return for another fun filled year of darts. On the 10th of February we will be holding our AGM down stairs in the Digger’s Lounge starting at 7pm. Good news this year we have two representative teams playing in the St George comp. Good luck to both teams. New members are always welcome to play social darts on Friday nights. The cost is $5.00 membership and $4.00 on the night.

SNOOKER CLUB With 2016 behind us, the Snooker Club is looking forward to our weekly Friday night social snooker comps (which commenced on the 13th January 2017). By the time this article is published in the March June Edition of the Burst, the Snooker Club would have held its Annual General Meeting (on Friday the 3rd of February) to elect the Snooker Club President (TBA) Secretary/Treasurer (TBA) and Committee (TBA). It was also decided by Snooker Club members, to rename the “A” Grade trophy the “Barry Willoughby memorial trophy”, who passed away in 2016, Barry was a long serving Chairman, Sports Administrator and an avid supporter of all the sporting clubs.

FISHING CLUB Hello 2017! The Fishing Club presentation in Nov 2016, was a success; well-done George Nohra on becoming our Club Champion. Other winners on the night were Diane Judge (Ladies Champion), Lachlan Korent (Junior Champion) and Jim Hall (Club Person of the Year). competition – we fished, we darted, we snookered, we golfed – WE WON. Lady Nemo was presented with the coveted Round Robin trophy at KRSL’s Galaxy of Stars night in December. As victors, we now have a handicap, making it very hard to compete in 2017, but will be giving it a red-hot go anyway. Fisho’s will be hosting the first Round Robin event on 11th March leaving from Oatley Bay Wharf (end of West Street, Oatley). Plans are underway, nominees from intra-clubs are being sought. Our Secretary/Treasurer advises that we have 37 financial members with 3 new applications pending. The Committee are in the process of organising a Fishing Charter in May and/or September, for those financial fishing club members without boats or not part of a crew. As large numbers of attendees are expected, a ballot may have to be devised. Our first outing for 2017 on Saturday 21st January is

SUB BRANCH PRESIDENTS REPORT What a start to the New Year, the hot weather especially the humidity has been extreme creating many sleepless nights, however with Autumn and hopefully cooler weather just around the corner, means that ANZAC Day is not far away. 2017 is a continuation of the 100 years of ANZAC and we will be commemorating those incredible Australian men and women who in 1917 were involved in the fighting in the Middle East (Palestine, Gaza) and the Western Front, Noreult, Bullecourt, Ypres and Polygon Wood to name just a few. There is another special milestone well worth mentioning, on the 25th April 1917 RSL NSW was granted its charter. Our ANZAC Day Service will take the usual format and participants are to assemble in Shaw Street at 6.45am for the March to the club for the service. A breakfast will be provided after the service, all club members and their families are welcome to attend. We do ask that if you are wearing a relative’s medals (and we encourage you to do so) please ensure you wear them on the right-hand side.
Our Remembrance Day Service was held on Sunday the 6th November, Cadets from TS Sirius and 233 St George Regional Cadet Unit making up the Catafalque Party and the Guard, the Remembrance Day Address was given by Lt Col Schon Condon GCSJ, RFD, the Sutherland Shire Band provided the music for the service, they also played a very enjoyable selection of music as they entertained us at lunch. Our next Commemoration Service and luncheon is in recognition of the Battle of the Coral Sea and is to be held on Sunday the 7th May. The cadets from TS Sirius will provide the Catafalque Party and Guard. The Service will commence at 10.45am, medals to be worn. Since my last Burst report your Far Southern Metropolitan District Council representatives have attended the very successful Ladies Night held at Campbelltown RSL, meetings at Lakemba and Ingleburn RSL, our next meeting is in March at Bankstown RSL. Hopefully from this meeting I will be able to bring the members some good news that the RSL NSW has finally cleaned up the problems that have been detailed in the press.

As this is our first edition of the Burst for 2017, I will take the opportunity to thank our very hard working Sub Branch officials in Secretary John Graham and Treasurer Peter Burgess, they do an enormous amount of work behind the scenes that make our Sub branch run so efficiently. Vice President Neil Arena who also looks after our very impressive memorabilia cabinets and the Committee all pitch in when required especially giving up their own time to attend member’s funeral, school and nursing home commemoration services. The Women’s Auxiliary had another very good year with their fund raising, all of which is given to various worthy charities, we can look forward to the ladies serving that hearty breakfast on ANZAC Day.

COMMUNITY GROUP REPORTS
Happy New Year! Let me start by letting you know that 2016 was full of great successes; our Christmas Luncheon for our nursing homes was enjoyed by all residents. Everyone went home with a gift and at least one special Christmas decoration; all 70 of which were lovingly hand made by Margaret. In December we delivered Christmas presents to each resident in three nursing homes; Bexley Park Aged Care, Fairmont Aged Care and St. George Aged Care. They began using their gifts straight away and were very grateful for them. Our stall at Carols by Candlelight went well, selling lots of craft items and donated gifts, with
the monetary proceeds going to help seniors in the community. The sausage sizzle stall, manned by the Community Group, also sold many snags with onions, assisting this cause as well. Thank you to everyone who supported us on the day, both by working and purchasing too. 2017 is on track, with the start of our monthly craft days at Bexley Park Aged Care. Once a month on a Tuesday a growing group of volunteers head to the nursing home to do arts and crafts with the residents, whom all enjoying the visit and activities immensely. If anyone has any craft ideas for seniors please let us know.
In March we will have the first of our three nursing home luncheons for 2017. It will consist of morning tea, bingo, lunch and a gift for all residents attending. Also with Easter fast approaching we are organising gifts to be given to the three nursing homes; Bexley Park Aged Care, Fairmont Aged Care and St. George Aged Care. So the Easter bunny is on his way! If you would like to join our volunteering group, let Club reception know and we’ll get in contact with you; we would love to have you join us and welcome fresh new ideas. Lynda Lake

As this is our first report for this year, may I wish everyone a Happy, Healthy and Safe 2017! Sadly towards the end of last year we lost Mavis Fryers, one of our long time members of the Women’s Auxiliary. In November some of our members, with ladies from the Community Group sold poppies for Remembrance Day at Bunnings Store in Kingsgrove. We also participated in the service and luncheon held for Remembrance Day at the club.

We once again held a Christmas raffle to raise funds for Defence Care and Homes for Heroes. Our thanks to all the people who generously donated prizes for the raffle or purchased tickets. Congratulations to the winners I am sure you enjoyed the prizes. I would particularly like to thank the ladies from the Auxiliary who donated their time by selling tickets for the raffle. Some of our members helped fill the show bags which were distributed at ‘Carols by Candlelight in the Park’. Also this year the ladies were invited to luncheons held by other Auxiliaries at their clubs. We are looking forward to holding another Crazy
Whist night in March. I hope many people come as this is a fun night and you do not have to be an expert at cards.
