Subject: Music

Purpose of Study

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.

Aims

The National Curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:

Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians

Learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence

Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related

dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

Programme of Study Autumn 1 & 2 YEAR 7

The Building Music

Blocks

of

Pupils will study the musical elements to equip them with the key vocabulary and foundations to undertake musical study in Key Stage 3.

Samba Students will learn to perform as part of a Samba band on a range of appropriate percussion instruments, using key Latin American rhythms.

Rap

Graphic Score

Students will learn about the context of Rap and will learn how to create their own rap composition and performance.

Students will learn about the context of graphic score and will learn how to create their own graphic score composition. This project explores the idea of using symbols and imagery to represent musical elements.

Indian Music Students will learn about the context of Indian Music and will learn how to create their own Indian Music composition and performance.

Rondo

Ground Bass

Programme Music

Students will study the concept of ‘structure’ in music specifically relating to the classical music structure: Rondo Form – ABACA.

Students will study the concept of Ground Bass and its context relating to the Baroque era. They will then explore the ways in which Ground Bass is relevant in the music of today.

A study in Western Classical Music.

Students will explore the concept of Programme Music and will create an original composition which paints a picture/tells a story.

Rhythms of the Nile Students will explore music from Egypt; focusing on Egyptian rhythms, scales and instrumentation.

Blues Students will study the context and origin of blues and develop knowledge of the ‘Twelve Bar Blues’ by performing as an ensemble.

Battle of the Bands

African Drumming

Students will study the origin, context and features of Reggae music and will learn to perform a Reggae song by Bob Marley as an ensemble.

Students will study band instrumental skills (voice, piano/keyboard, guitar and drum kit) and will learn to perform a song of their choice as a band.

Students will study the origin, context and features of African music and will learn to perform authentic rhythms as an ensemble using djembe’ techniques.
