MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Where does time go? This year has certainly been an actionpacked, fast paced year.

Our word for 2022-23 was ‘Opportunity’, which encouraged our students and our community to become more involved, and to engage again in activities that may have previously been restricted. We once again welcomed parents into school for a wide range of events, ensuring they felt more connected with their children's learning journey.

Residential and outdoor adventure activities resumed for all children in Years 4 to 6 and we participated and excelled in an extensive range of sporting, cultural, and academic competitions, providing invaluable learning opportunities and creating life-long memories. Academic challenge and success prevailed, often showcased through our wonderful class assemblies.

National Day, festive concerts, International Day, House Day, Sports Day, swim galas, BSME Games, World School Games, Book

Day, Arts Week, Enterprise Week and our Annual Iftar were all wonderful opportunities to come together as a community and celebrate being part of our incredibly special school.

Thank you to every member of our Kings' School Dubai community, our students, parents, and our academic, admin, and support teams for your positivity and engagement in all events and opportunities highlighted here.

We hope you enjoy our 2023 version of 'The Book', our pictorial celebration of the year that was, and trust you will look back with pride on the successes and fun we shared, and the fond memories created and captured within these pages.

4 THE BOOK | 2022 - 2023

This year, Kings’ School Dubai has been filled with excitement, unity, and numerous accomplishments. The community spirit across the school has been vibrant and we have relished the opportunities to bring everyone together.

The events and activities were diverse, ranging from class assemblies, Share my Learning, festive concerts, Arts Week, Sports Days, World School Games, celebrating National Day and International Day, participating in Enterprise Week, going on residentials and trips, hosting a community Iftar at Atlantis, celebrating World Book Day, and engaging in House Week activities.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY HEADTEACHER

Our students, once again, have demonstrated their remarkable qualities, including hard work, determination, and kindness. They excelled academically, performed on stage, competed in sports, and displayed camaraderie throughout.

Reflecting on the year, it amazes me how much has been achieved and it has been an absolute pleasure and privilege to be a part of this truly special school community. As you peruse 'The Book', we hope it brings back cherished memories of the year that has passed.

LONGSTANDING LOYALTY AND LEGACY

At Kings' School Dubai, we are fortunate to have a significant number of longstanding staff members.

Loyal and committed employees are the foundation to any successful organisation

and we appreciate their contribution and dedication year after year. For all those staff members who reached their 5, 10, and 15-year milestone with Kings' this academic year, we were thrilled once again to present a gift of our appreciation.

STUDENT INSIGHTS THE BOOK | 2022 - 2023

We are proud to have represented Kings' School Dubai as Head Girl and Head Boy this year.

There have been many highlights but for us, we are most proud of achieving 2nd place in the BSME games. Not only this, we enjoyed hosting Arts Week and taking on the responsibility of supporting our Student Councillors in our fortnightly meetings. In addition to this, we presented our International Day performances to

the school and we were honoured to be part of such an amazing day. As we near the end of our primary school journey, we reflect on our years since we joined in FS1 and are grateful for the wonderful opportunities that Kings' has provided.

We wish the future leaders, who will follow in our footsteps, the best of luck next year.

STUDENT INSIGHTS

MY 8 YEARS AT KINGS' SCHOOL DUBAI

Since I joined Kings’ School Dubai in FS1, within the first 5 minutes

I had already made friends.

During my 8 years at Kings’, I have had the opportunity to attend lots of clubs and develop my sporting skills, such as netball and football. I have had the joy of representing the school in many competitions, including BSME and World School Games.

Teachers have always been supportive and are always helpful while still challenging us. My favourite events in school have been Sports Day, House Day, and International Day.

A key message I have learnt is to never give up because if you persevere, you will get there!

14 THE BOOK | 2022 - 2023

My parents were searching for the perfect school and when we came on our first visit to Kings’ School Dubai, we instantly knew it was a flawless environment to thrive.

Throughout the years, Kings’ has given me more chances to learn and have fun than I can count. I have been on the Debate Team and gold-medal winning Basketball Team at the BSME games. Over the course of 8 years, I have experienced so much, from International Day to House Day.

MY 8 YEARS AT KINGS' SCHOOL DUBAI

One of the reasons I joined Kings’ was because of how kind and generous everyone was. The teachers always help me and challenge me to be the best version of myself.

Last but not least, the projects and lessons over the past four fifths of a decade have just been a blast!

NATIONAL AWARENESS DAYS

GOLD DAY 29 September 2022

We would like to thank Amelia and Nicholas for inspiring us with their incredibly brave stories. We all enjoyed showing our support

for Gold Day to raise awareness of childhood cancer. There were some amazing outfits on show across the school!

22 THE BOOK | 2022 - 2023

I was so happy that all of my friends in my class came dressed up in gold to support me in Gold Day. I felt very special to be able to tell people about my story. I loved Gold Day and cannot wait to celebrate it again.

23 KINGS’ SCHOOL DUBAI | The Best By Every Child

28 October 2022 THE BOOK | 2022 - 2023

Pink Day at Kings' School Dubai is a day we recognise every year to raise awareness for families affected by breast cancer. Students and staff wore pink to raise money, which was donated to Brest Friends, a part of the Al Jalila Foundation.

Our Inclusion Ambassadors greeted the parent community at the gates of the school and collected over 5,000dhs! We are very proud of the support we received from parents and the mature way in which our students discussed the impact that cancer has on families.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH 24

Pink Day was a memorable day because we discussed the impact that cancer can have on our lives. We are proud that we were part of raising awareness for cancer and the money we raised.

WORLD KINDNESS DAY

World Kindness Day provided children with opportunities to spread kindness throughout their day and to consider how kindness can prevent bullying. One of the children's favourite

activities, inspired by the Positive Education Champions, was to have a secret buddysomeone they had to secretly be kind to - with a big reveal at the end of the week!

26 THE BOOK | 2022 - 2023
13 November 2022

Kindness projects help spread kindness around the school and make people happy. In Year 4, the Positive Education Champions created a kindness jar with different acts of kindness for other children to do. We saw lots of kind activities across the year group.

ODD SOCK DAY AND ANTI-BULLYING WEEK

Odd Sock's Day launched our Anti-Bullying Week and it was fantastic to see staff and students (and even some parents!) wearing odd socks to celebrate our differences and uniqueness. The Inclusion Champions ensured everyone was included on the day by offering spare odd socks to any students and staff who forgot. The theme for

Anti-bullying Week was 'Reach Out'.

As well as recapping what bullying is and the collective responsibility we all have to prevent bullying, students focused on who to contact and how they can reach out for support. They also learned how reaching out for help and helping others supports everyone's well-being.

28 THE BOOK | 2022 - 2023
14 - 18 November 2022

Our theme for anti-bullying week was all about reaching out to others and asking for help. We learnt that if you see someone alone or sad, you should go and talk to them or invite them to play with you.

29 KINGS’ SCHOOL DUBAI | The Best By Every Child

15 - 19 May 2023 THE BOOK | 2022 - 2023

In line with the UK, our annual Mental Health Awareness and Positive Education Week took place from Monday 15th to Friday 19th May. Throughout the week, students took part in daily activities to enhance their well-being. They also had a range of Positive Education lessons, including discussions about what mental health is and exploring how strategies for supporting our physical health also

support our mental health. For the younger students, this involved understanding how they can manage 'big' feelings and identifying key people in their lives who they can talk to. For our older students, discussions included digital well-being and responsibilities, and parents were also invited into school for a presentation on digital awareness for online safety and well-being.

We learnt all about a recipe for being a good friend. Being kind, standing up for others and helping others are the most important ingredients.
MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK 30

We learnt that we cant' always see mental health like physical health but we can still do things to look after our mental health. This includes our diet, exercise and talking to people you trust.

HOUSE SWIM GALAS

The annual swimming galas saw Year 1 swimming widths on their front and back before finishing off with a fun obstacle relay. Every student in Year 2 demonstrated their front crawl and backstroke swimming the 25m length of the pool with many also showcasing their breaststroke.

In KS2, every student took part in front crawl and backstroke heats against their peers of similar ability in order to earn points for their

house. Many students also showcased their breaststroke and butterfly and it was truly magnificent to see the skill level of all of our swimmers.

It was fantastic to see the competition between the houses and the incredible support towards their peers in the pool.

SPORTS DAY

Our Sports Days were back with a bang this year as we welcomed all parents back to watch their sporting superstars on the track and in the field. For FS1 the theme was 'The Hungry Caterpillar' whilst FS2 dressed up as superheroes and Year 1 and Year 2 were astronauts and aliens. The focus for our younger students is showcasing their fundamental movement skills of running, jumping, and throwing across a range of exciting activities. For Years 3 to 6, we

move towards more traditional athletics events, including the 50m sprint, vortex throw, and long jump. Each student earns bronze, silver, gold or platinum points for their house across 6 different events and it's a fantastic opportunity for students to compete against their peers in a fun and supportive atmosphere. It was extremely close this year with different houses winning each day but after combining all the scores, Stuart were declared the overall Sports Day Champions.

ARTS WEEK

Arts Week is definitely one of the highlights of the year! It provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the creative and performing arts, and the huge range of talents we have within our school community. The entire school was transformed into an art gallery with art work on display from every student.

Additionally, the students in each year group collaborated together to create a year group

art piece for our silent auction, raising money for the Farrah Programme, which is part of the Al Jalila Foundation.

We had a vast range of performances from our children, staff, and parents, including singing, dancing, rapping, musical instruments, and monologues.

It was a truly inspirational week!

WORLD SCHOOL GAMES January 2023

This year, we entered two teams into the World School Games, providing more opportunities for students from Years 5 and 6 to compete at the highest level against schools both in Dubai and internationally.

Competing across three days in January, students participated in football (girls and boys), athletics and swimming. There were

some excellent individual and team successes across the various sports and it was fantastic to see such great sportsmanship and support for all the competitors.

Both squads performed incredibly well and we were delighted to see our B squad crowned champions of the development competition.

BSME GAMES

Our biggest multi-sport event of the year took place in early March, returning after three years, with 37 students from Years 5 and 6 representing us at the BSME Games in Abu Dhabi. Students had been training all year, preparing to compete in a variety of sports; football (boys and girls), netball, boys basketball, athletics and swimming.

As part of the experience, all students stayed in Abu Dhabi with the PE team making it a weekend to remember not only for the sport but for the memories made with each other. Once again, our students were absolutely

phenomenal all weekend, too many individual and team successes to mention but we were delighted to be able to share these in a special phase celebration assembly on our return.

Both the basketball and netball teams won their competitions with the boys football and swimming finishing 3rd and the athletics team in 4th. Once all the points had been combined over the weekend, KSD was announced runner up of the BSME Games.

A fantastic achievement and we celebrated in style at the gala dinner on the final evening.

Daisy Year 6 Class

NATIONAL DAY 29 November 2022

On Tuesday 29th November, we celebrated the 51st National Day of the UAE. The day began with the whole school community assembling on Sandringham field, along with our Emirati families, to listen to a speech, which was delivered by our Head Boy and Girl as well as Emirati Ambassadors.

It is always nerve-wracking to stand up in front of such a large crowd, but our students demonstrated great bravery and were incredible as always. After singing the national anthem, we were treated to a super performance from a group of traditional

Emirati Al-Ayyala dancers. It was a fabulous way to start such a special day!

In class, students took part in exciting activities that included making date smoothies, sand art, and diving for pearls in the pool, to name just a few! All the activities were linked closely to the history and future vision of the UAE and students had the opportunity to visit the different stations situated outside. Camels, a falcon, clay pot-painting, calligraphy, face-painting, henna, and food stations entertained all the students and staff.

I loved holding the falcon and getting henna!

EXTRA-CURRICULAR AND ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES

February 2023 THE BOOK | 2022 - 2023

Year 5 and 6 students attended the JA Hatta Fort Hotel for what was an incredible experience in the mountains. From developing survival skills in the wild, to rock-climbing and buggy-building, students demonstrated resilience, compassion, independence, and exemplorary team work for the duration of their stay.

Being away from home for multiple nights isn't easy, but the wonderful students have

shown that being brave and being able to take risks is important in our progress and growth as human beings.

The Adventure Centre said that we were the best school that has attended and that they had never met students who are so kind, polite, and sensible. The memories they have made will hopefully last a life time and as teachers, we could not be more proud of what these children have accomplished on their trip.

Going on residential is one of the highlights of primary school! The amount of activities and the fun you have, is phenomenal. Although it had its challenges, I learnt the value of friendship, adventure, and resilience.
YEARS 5 & 6 RESIDENTIAL 64

My favourite part of residential was the range of activities - the best one was The Maze because we used our teamwork skills and my girls team broke the record for the fastest group to escape.

I had so much fun on residential - the staff were so kind and caring, which made me enjoy it even more. My highlight was the Slip n Slide activity; it was really fun and me and my friends laughed so much!

March 2023 THE BOOK | 2022 - 2023

This year, students in Year 4 attended the North Star Dibba Camp for their residential. It was an incredible opportunity for the students to show their character, strength, and bravery, which was our concept for the spring term.

While at the camp, students developed their water skills by raft-building and kayaking, as well as zip-lining, abseiling, and rock climbing to the height they felt most comfortable.

Team work was a key element to the trip as they had the chance to compete in beach games and had to work together to keep their dorms tidy. Being away from home was an important milestone for many of the students and they blew the teachers and staff away with their resilience and openness to try new things that came their way. It was an action-packed 24 hours and the memories they made will get them ready for their future residentials.

I enjoyed everything. The team-building was fun, and I got the chance to do raft-building with my friends. I liked the camp songs and the stories at night. Staying in a room with my friends was a highlight of the trip.
YEAR 4 RESIDENTIAL 66

Residential was super exciting. On the first day, we got to complete water activities like kayaking and beach games. In the evening, we got to have a yummy dinner. I enjoyed the camp songs and I loved hanging out with my cabin group.

I really liked abseiling. At first I found it challenging, but I overcame my fear of heights. Also, I loved the rock climbing because I pushed myself to go higher and out of my comfort zone. After going a quarter of the way up, I persevered and kept going to halfway. It was so much fun staying with my friends and chatting throughout the night. The food was amazing - the burger was delicious!

SCHOOL TRIPS 2022 - 2023

School trips are a wonderful opportunity to support students with their concept learning through experience. From theatre trips to Ski Dubai, our students have had the chance to take part in a wide variety of activities, that help to develop their skills and understanding in new environments.

During Arts week, Year 1 embarked on an exciting school trip to Jam Jar, a captivating space dedicated to artistic exploration, aligning perfectly with our concept of ‘Awe and Wonder’.

The trip provided a wonderful opportunity, not only to celebrate Arts Week, but to delve deeper into the theme of sunsets

and natural landscapes, delving into the idea of awe-inspiring experiences. Using skills from their art lessons, the children put their artistic knowledge into practice as they followed step-by-step instructions to paint their very own sunset masterpiece on a canvas, which they proudly took home. Through this hands-on experience, the children not only gained a deeper understanding of how ‘awe’ can be discovered in nature, but it also enhanced their painting skills.

Overall, the children had a fantastic time and the trip to Jam Jar offered a rich and immersive learning experience, fostering creativity and awe-inspired exploration among our Year 1 students.

CHESS COMPETITION

This year, Kings' School Dubai has hosted three rounds of Chess Tournaments for phases 2, 3 and 4 in the autumn, spring and summer terms with the support of the brilliant team at Chess Knowledge. It has been wonderful post Covid to be see children back playing with real chessboards once again.

The Chess Tournaments have given the opportunity for children to play competitively each term, culminating in an overall champion

per phase for the academic year 2022-23. This has been a great way for children to utilise their skills learnt from weekly chess clubs held both internally and externally this year.

Our Kings' chess players have demonstrated great skill and sportsmanship this year. Our overall phase trophy winners for this academic year are proud to have their names etched into the Kings' Chess Tournament Plaque proudly displayed in our Balmoral Reception.

SCIENCE DAY 12 January 2023

Science Day theme was 'Seeing is Believing'. Students from across the school either designed their own lab coats or dressed up as their favourite scientists. It was fantastic to see so many children inspired by scientists from around the world, past and present, and understanding their contributions to science.

In the morning, students were informed that Mr Higgins' model boat had gone missing two days

prior and that they must solve the 'Who Done It' crime by the end of the day. They were given clues, which included handwriting samples, fingerprints, crime scene photos, and the schedules of the four teacher suspects to study and find the culprit.

Keeping within the forensic theme, students also learnt how to create magic ink to reveal hidden messages or fingerprints.

WORLD BOOK DAY 24 April 2023

World Book Day was a day full of fun, laughter, and creative costumes where we celebrated our love of reading across the school. The day started with a parade where each year group displayed their amazing costumes and big smiles around the school to staff and parents.

During the day, each class participated in a variety of different activities within their classes. One whole school activity included designing a book bench where the winning bench will be painted and displayed in our outdoor area. It will then be used as a quiet reading space by all the

students across the school. Additionally, we had tea parties in the hall where buddy classes had the opportunity to read and share their love of stories with one another.

A highlight of the day was the story stone hunt around the school grounds. The students enjoyed running around hunting for stones and then they had to guess the name of the book depicted on the stone. The day concluded with Drop Everything and Read (DEAR), where we welcomed parents into the classroom to read with the students.

World Book Day this year was so much fun. I loved the parade because I got to dance around like a ballerina. ENTERPRISE WEEK

Enterprise Week this year was extraordinary. It started with every class from FS1 to Year 6 having parent volunteers come into classrooms to share their experience of entrepreneurship or of their business adventures. This truly inspired our students, who were keen to start their own business projects for the week.

They learnt about designing, creating, marketing, the concept of profit and loss and, most importantly, how they were going to sell

their products at the end of the week. On the sales day, the school was packed with parents visiting different 'shops' to buy the final products; we had keychains, cakes in a mug, hand decorated mugs, ice lollies and much more.

This was another fantastic opportunity to expose our children to real world learning and for our parent community to work closely with the school for what was an incredible week!
