O Allah! Make the months of Rajab and Sha’ban a blessing for us and let us reach the holy month of Ramadan Safely

َ ‫رﺟﺐ‬ The 7th month of the Islamic calendar is Rajab, which is related to the meaning “to respect”. This is considered to be one of the four sacred months.

Something sacred is something that is special in our religion , so you see this month really is one we must learn about. Lets find out why its so special and make sure you read the Dua on the front cover so that you are blessed with a wonderful Rajab, Shabaan and Ramadan!

But before you move one, can you think why there is a picture of Masjid al-Aqsa and the Dome of the Rock on the front cover? What do they have to do with this month? Where are these holy sites located? Do you know? Keep reading to find out more!

ّ ُ َ َّ َّ ْ ّ َ َ َ ْ َ َ َ ْ ُ ً َ َّ‫ﷲ‬ ِ ‫ﷲَ اﺛﻨﺎ ﻋﴩ ﺷﻬﺮا ﰲ ِﻛﺘﺎب‬ ِ ‫إن ِﻋﺪة اﻟﺸﻬﻮر ِﻋﻨﺪ‬ ٌِ ِ ِ ِ َ ْ َ َ َ َ ُ ‫اﻷ ْر َض ﻣ ْﻨ َﻬﺎ َأ ْر َﺑ َﻌﺔ‬ َ َ َ ْ ّ ٌ‫ﺣ ُﺮم‬ َ َ ‫ات و‬ ِ ‫ﻳﻮم ﺧﻠﻖ اﻟﺴﻤﺎو‬ ِ The number of months ordained by Allah is twelve in the Book of Allah since the day He created the heavens and the earth. Of these, four are sacred; Surah At-Tauba 9:36

Companion’s Corner

His full name was Ali Ibn Abu Talib Bin Abdul-Muttalib Bin Hashim. He came from the most respectable family of the Quraish tribe - the family of Banu Hashim. His mother was called Fatima and his father was Abu Talib; chief of Banu Hashim tribe and the custodian (Keeper) of the Kaaba. Abu Talib was the uncle of the Prophet Muhammad S.A.W, which made Ali the cousin of the Prophet. When the Prophets grandfather died, it was his uncle Abu Talib who took him in. Many years later, Ali at the age of 5 came to live with his noble cousin, the holy prophet, and at the tender age of 10, he became the first child to embrace Islam after the first revelation in mount Hira!

Ali (R.A.) was born in Makkah on Friday, the 13th of Rajab, thirty years after the incident of the Elephant (Surah al-Fil).

Ali Ibn Abu Talib (R.A.) was one of the ten men given the tidings of Paradise

He married the Prophet's daughter Fatimah RA. He was a prominent scholar, a brave and courageous soldier, known famously as the lion of Allah; well known for his amazing self discipline, and remarkable with language.

The verses of the holy Qur’an that Ali RA heard, were directly from the Prophet SAW through his childhood and impacted his character. It was apparent that the words had illuminated his heart and transformed his mind and soul to become pure in faith and action. Ali memorized the Qur’an by heart and was considered to be among the best interpreters who knew every verse, line and meaning. It was narrated that Ali said: “By Allah, no verse of it was revealed but I know why it was revealed, when it was revealed and to whom it was revealed. My Lord has blessed me with a deep understanding and an eloquent, truthful tongue.”

Because of the oppression and tyranny endured by the Muslims in Makkah, the Prophet SAW requested his companions and the Muslims to seek refuge by migrating. First, he directed a group to Abyssinia, where the ruler was known to be just in allowing the freedom of religion.

Years later, the Prophet SAW told his Companions and the muslims to migrate to Yathrib (now known as Medina), but stayed behind himself with his close companions Abu Bakr, Ali, Suhayb and Zaid bin Haritha, peace be upon them all. One night, soon after that a group of young men from various clans of the Quraish were called upon to surround the Prophet’s SAW home, to have a share in killing him.

However the Angel Jibreel AS brought him news of this and conveyed the order made by Allah to migrate to Yathrib. At midnight the Prophet SAW left his home with Abu Bakr. He requested Ali to sleep in his bed, covering himself with the Prophet’s SAW blanket. By the grace of Allah, the Prophet SAW had escaped without the young men realizing that he had left. When the men decided to enter the house to kill the Prophet SAW, they removed the blanket to discover Ali instead. He was willing to sacrifice himself for the life of the Prophet SAW! Ali RA was well known for his bravery. He participated in almost all the battles during the time of Prophet Muhammad S.A.W and was the standard-bearer (carrier of the flag of the muslim army) in those battles.

Ali (R.A.) married the Prophet's SAW’s most beloved daughter Fatimah RA, honoured as being the leader of the women of Jannah, her mother was Khadijah tul Kubra RA. Ali R A and Fatimah RA had four children: Al-Hasan RA, Al-Husayn RA, Zainab RA, and Umm Kulthoom RA. In the final years of his life, this amazing companion became the 4th Caliph of Islam. In this Ayah from the Qur’an, Allah is telling us, that in order to be happy - by being blessed with a “good life”, we must do good deeds – helping each other, being kind, honest, having a good character, these are all the special ingredients for happiness!!!

STORY TIME

Isra wal Mihraj

‫اﻹﴎاء و اﻤﻟﻌﺮاج‬

Al Isra wal Miraj took place around the 27th of Rajab.

Rajab is said to be the keys to success in Ramadan: “In the month of Rajab, you sow the seeds, in Sha’ban you irrigate them and in Ramadan you reap the harvest.”

In other words, you have to begin preparing for Ramadan in this month by starting to follow some of the do’s and don’ts of Ramadan, clearing and tidying your rooms and homes as this helps remove things that can distract you from thinking about Allah SWT, and getting your mind, body and environment ready. You then can start practicing all your acts of kindness and worship in Rajab and Shabaan and you will be ready to maximise your efforts in Ramadan – like studying for an exam or preparing for a big tournament….. you wont do well unless you start training and this is the month to start your training!

Y STORY OF THE NIGH E NE R T H U J O T This incerdible journey took place during the year known as ‘the year of sadness.’ It was the year in which the Prophet SAW lost both his beloved wife Khadija RA and his uncle, who had been his protector, Abu Talib RA. The Prophet SAW and his followers were oppressed and tyrannised by the non – believers in Mecca. In addition to all these burdens, when the Prophet SAW had

travelled to Ta’if, in search of allies, the people of Ta’if had rejected him in the most cruel way. They sent their children into the streets to stone him until he left the city, bleeding and alone. Having gone through so much grief and suffering, the Prophet Muhammad (saw) was given a truly beautiful and comforting gift.

On this incredible journey, Prophet Muhammad travelled from Makkah to Jerusalem, (923 miles away!) on the Buraq (an animal of Jannah –see description on next page), to Masjid al-Aqsa, in Jerusalem (see front cover), where he SAW lead all the previous 124,000 Prophets in prayer!!!! If this wasn’t a miracle enough, then he, SAW, on that same night, ascended the to the heavens from the Dome of the Rock (see front cover) with the angel Jibril Alaihisalam, meeting eight prophets in the 7 heavens.!!!! Each Prophet greeted Prophet Muhammad SAW with: “Welcome O pious brother and pious Prophet” (except Adam AS and Ibrahim AS who said “Welcome O pious son and pious Prophet”) (Bukhari)

Jibril AS took the Prophet Muhammad SAW to Sidra al – Muntaha – a tree whose roots begin in sky of the 6th heaven and its branches are over the sky of the 7th heaven thereby casting its shadow over the whole of paradise. Jibril AS continued taking the beloved messenger of God, to higher places, where he, SAW, heard the pens that write peoples actions and higher still until he got to a place where a green silk bed covered the horizon, where Jibril AS then left the Prophet SAW. This miraculous night ended with the greatest honour of all, only bestowed to the final Prophet of Islam and no other - being brought into the presence of Allah the Almighty!

The talk that took place between Allah SWT and Prophet Muhammad SAW consists of the words of Atahhiyat , which is recited during Salah, after every two rakat (cycles).

When Prophet Muhammad SAW met Allah SWT, he didn’t say ‘Assalam aleikum’. What is someone going to say when he meets Allah SWT ?! We can’t wish Allah peace, because He is the source of all peace.So Prophet Muhammad SAW said:“Attahiyyaatu Lillahi Was Salawatu Wattayyibatu” (All compliments, all prayer and worship are for Allah)Allah SWT replied:“Assalamu Alaika Ayyuhannabiyyu ‘Warahmatullahi Wabarka’tuhu” (Peace be upon you, Oh Prophet and Allah’s Mercy and Blessings). َ ‫الس َــا ُم َع َل ْي‬ َّ ُ ‫الط ِّي َب‬ ُ ‫ــو‬ ُ ‫التح َّي‬ َّ ‫ات َو‬ َّ ‫ــات ل َّلــه َو‬ َ ‫الص َل‬ َّ ‫ــات‬ ‫ــك‬ ِ ِ ِ ُ َ ْ َ​َ ُ ‫ــة للاَِّ َو َب َر َك‬ ُ ‫ات‬ َّ ‫َأ ُّي َهــا‬ ‫ــه‬ ‫النــيُّ ورحم‬ ِ To this, Prophet Muhammad SAW replied:“Assalamu Alaina Wa’ala’Ibadillahis Saa’liheen” (Peace be on us and on all good slaves of Allah) َ ‫الصال‬ َّ َِّ‫الس َل ُم َع َل ْي َنا َو َع َل ع َباد للا‬ َّ ‫ني‬ ِ​ِ ِ ِ *Note* Prophet Muhammad SAW included all of us in his reply!!!!… (and on all good slaves of Allah)And listening to this conversation between Allah SWT and His Messenger SAW, Jibril AS said:“Ash’had’u’un La ilahaillallahu Wa Ash’hadu Anna Muhammadun Abd’uhu Wa Rasooluh”(I bear witness that no one is worthy of worship except Allah And I bear witness that Muhammad is His Messenger). َ ‫َأ ْش َه ُد َأ ْن َل إ َل َه إ َّل هللا َو َأ ْش َه ُد َأ َّن ُم‬ ‫ح َّم ًدا‬ ِ ِ ُ ‫َع ْب ُد ُه َو َر ُسول ُه‬

The Prophet SAW was given three things from that magnificent encounter: 5 daily prayers equal to the reward of 50 daily prayers The last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah The Major sins (muqhimat) of the people from the ummah of the Prophet Muhammad SAW, (us!), would be forgiven except those who died assosciating partners with Allah SWT. After this, the Prophet SAW was taken to Jannah by Jibril AS, where he SAW, saw houses made of pearl, ruby and chrysolite, where the soil smelled like musk and where there were domes of pearls next the a river – Kawthar, whose water was whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. (May Allah SWT grant us all Jannatul Firdous. Ameen) Then the Prophet SAW was also shown hell and its fires (May Allah SWT protect us all from it. Ameen).

The Prophet SAW then was taken back to masjid al-Aqsa, mounted the Buraq, and returned to Makkah.

The Whole journey (Isra) and the ascention (Miraj) took place in that one night between the night prayer and the morning prayer!

One of the most beautiful lessons of this story is the promise of Allah that:

‫ﻓﺈن ﻣﻊ اﻟﻌﴪ ﻳﴪا إن ﻣﻊ اﻟﻌﴪ ﻳﴪا‬ “Verily with every hardship comes ease.”

Qur’an 94: 5-6

Look how after such hardship, Allah SWT rewarded the Prophet SAW, for his patience throughout his trials.

Instructions: Take 5-10 minutes to brainstorm all the concepts and ideas that come to mind when you think about the idea of happiness. Fill in each bubble with the things that make you happy. If you are struggling to fill in all of the bubbles, think about what makes you smile, hobbies that you love, a person or place or thing that you love and the things that you do that bring happiness to others.

Here is this months activity for you to focus on the moment and have some time of calm for yourself. Breathe, relax and enjoy.

Materials Needed: Watercolour paper (A4 or larger) Watercolour set Coloured string or thin ribbon Black permanent Marker (or calligraphy pen) Hole punch One side of an old cardboard box (tissue/cereal) Scissors Clear cellotape METHOD: 1. Begin by setting out nine separate sheets of watercolour paper 2. Paint each sheet a separate colour using your watercolours. Heres a chance to get creative…. maybe a geometric design (like in issue 1 of Ar-Rayaan), or a rainbow or any pattern you like!

Use this as an opportunity to learn about mixing colours. It’s so much fun!

Allow the paint to fully dry before moving onto the next step.

3. Take your one piece of cardboard and cut it into a rectangular shape. This is the template you will be using for the rungs of the ladder. You can round the edges of your rectangles or get funky with your own design!

4. Draw around your template onto each of the coloured papers.

5. Cut out these rectangles (ladder rungs) carefully with scissors. You should have 9 rectangles in total.

6. Using a permanent marker, write the following in Arabic or English on each of your ladder rungs (cut out rectangles) Allah SWT, Ibrahim AS, Musa AS, Haroon AS, Idris AS, Yusuf AS, Yahya AS & Esa AS, Adam AS, Masjid al-Aqsa (If you have a calligraphy pen, why not try and make your writing fancy! You can search on the internet to help you) Maybe write it in pencil first, until you are happy with your writing, before using the permanent markers.

7. Using your hole-punch, make two holes on either end of each rectangle.

8. Thread the string/ribbon through the holes, carefully piecing together your Miraj ladder (see picture below). Make sure its in the right order! Start with the name Allah SWT. 9. Finish by tying the ends into a neat bow, and securing the string at the back of each rung with clear cellotape.

There you have it! A finished Miraj Ladder – Don’t forget to hang it somewhere nice and clean.

Imam Al-Shafi‘I Rahimahu Allah ْ ‫َأ ُﺑﻮ َﻋ‬ Abū Abdillāh Muhammad ibn Idrīs al-Shāfi’ī (‫ٱﻟﻠﻪ‬ ‫ﺪ‬ ‫ﺒ‬ ِ ِ َّ ّ ْ ُ ّ‫ﴔ‬ ُ َ َ ُ ْ َ ُ ‫ﺎﻓ‬ ِ ِ ‫ )ﻣﺤﻤﺪ ﺑﻦ ِإدر ِ ﻳﺲ ٱﻟﺸ‬was an Arab Muslim theologian, writer, and scholar, who was the first contributor to a very important book on Islamic rules and laws. (Usūl al-fiqh).

Al-Shāfi‘ī belonged to the Qurayshi clan of Banu Muttalib, which was the sister clan of the Banu Hashim, (Prophet Muhammad SAW’s tribe). Despite this high lineage, Imam al-Shāfi‘ī grew up in poverty, in spite of his connections in the highest social circles.

He was born in Gaza by the town of Asqalan in Rajab in 150 AH (767 CE). His father died in Ash-Shaam while he was still a child. Fearing the waste of his sharīf lineage, his mother decided to move to Makkah when he was about two years old. His maternal (mothers) family roots were from Al-Yemen, but there were more members of his family in Makkah, so his mother believed he would better be taken care of. Little is known about al-Shāfi‘ī's early life in Makkah, except that he was brought up in poor circumstances and that from his youth he was devoted to learning. An account states that his mother could not afford to buy his paper, so he would write his lessons on bones, particularly shoulder-bones! He studied under Muslim ibn Khalid Az-Zanji, the Mufti of Makkah then, who is thus considered to be the first teacher of Imam al-Shāfi‘ī. By the age of seven, al-Shāfi‘ī had memorized the Qur’an! At ten, he had committed Imam Malik's Muwatta' to heart (a book of 1720 hadith!), at which time his teacher made him his deputy, to

teach in his absence. Al-Shāfi‘ī was authorized to issue fatwas (a decision on a matter according to Islamic Law) at the age of fifteen. It is said that he recited the whole Qur’an every day during the 5 prayers and twice in Ramadan!

Al-Shāfi‘ī moved to Al-Medinah in a desire to learn more about Islamic law. Accounts differ on the age at which he set out to Medina; (some books say 13 while others say 20).

There, he was taught for many years by the famous Imam Malik ibn Anas, who was impressed with his memory, knowledge and intelligence. By the time of Imam Mālik's death in 179 AH (795 CE), al-Shāfi‘ī had already gained a reputation as a brilliant jurist (expert in law). Even though he would later disagree with some of the views of Imam Mālik, al-Shāfi‘ī had the deepest respect for him by always referring to him as "the Teacher".

Al-Shāfi'ī eventually returned to Baghdad in 810 CE. By this time, his knowledge was well known and respected and soon he established his own ‘school of thought’ (In Islam, there are four main schools of thought, Maliki, Shafi, Hanafi and Hanbali – named after Imam Malik, Imam Shafi’I, Iman Hanafi and Imam Hanbali- all experts in Islamic law, the Qur’an and Hadith. The schools of thought use the Qur’an and Sunnah to answer questions that we might not have a clear answer to, so the four Imams agreed on most situations, but in some areas there are differences of opinion).

In 814 CE, al-Shāfi'ī decided to leave Baghdad for Egypt.

The precise reasons for his departure from Al-‘Iraq are

uncertain, but it was in Egypt that he would meet another teacher, Sayyidah Nafisah bint Al-Hasan, who would also financially support his studies, and where he would dictate his life's works to students. Several of his leading students would write down what al-Shāfi'ī said, who would then have them read it back aloud so that corrections could be made.

He was a talented archer, poet, was to said to have a photographic memory and was a very skilled chess player for he believed it sharpened the mind for battle tactics. It is said that he divided the night into three parts, one for writing, one for praying and one for sleeping.

SubhanaAllah- what discipline and devotion.

Al-Shāfi'ī suffered from a serious intestinal illness which kept him frail and weak during the later years of his life. The precise cause of his death is thus unknown. He died at the age of 54 on the 30th of Rajab in 204 AH (20 January 820 CE), in Al-Fustat, Egypt, and was buried in the vault of the Banū ‘Abd al-Hakam, near Mount al-Muqattam. The qubbah ُ (‫ﻗ َّـﺒـﺔ‬, dome) was built in 608 AH (1212 CE) by the Ayyuby Sultan Al-Kamil, and the mausoleum remains an important site today.

Over the Dome you will not see a crescent but a ship; Which is telling the Muslims that: there is an ocean of knowledge under the Dome.

Regular Ritu als Can you remember what a ritual is?

A ritual is a string of actions performed in a very specific way and order, every time.

So far we have looked at making whudu and praying 5 times a day.

This month we will look at washing your hands.

Did you know that it is a Sunnah to wash your hands before you eat and after you eat?

About 1400 years ago, before microscopes were even invented, (Microscopes magnify tiny things for us, that are otherwise so small we would not be able to see them with our eyes. A virus or bacteria – germs, are tiny living things that, if they sneak into us, can cause illnesses and diseases just like the coronovirus). So how can we protect ourselves from these pesky little things if we cant even see them? The Prophet SAW taught us that we should wash our hands before we eat! If you have been paying attention at school, this is exactly the advice the Drs are giving now, in 2020, about how to try to keep yourself safe from any harmful germs. Germs can stick around on tables and chairs and toys and any surface or object that we touch really. Then they mostly will try and sneak into us through our mouths, noses and eyes. When we eat, we touch our mouths with our hands and this is exactly what those nasty little germs are waiting for. So if we make sure to follow the sunnah and wash wash wash with soap before we eat, then we can stop them from harming us. What a perfect religion Islam is and how wise was our Prophet SAW!

Some things the Prophet SAW said about how to be clean - Keeping yourself and your environment clean keeps you fit and healthy.

- You’ll stay safe from diseases and infections.

- Allah (S.A.W.) loves the person who stays clean and maintains his hygiene.

- Angels send their blessings in the home where cleanliness and hygiene are maintained.
