Foreword 前言 2018 has been an exciting year for King’s College London and Nanjing Health School, as our collaboration continues to go from strength to strength. Our partnership showcases an innovative approach to improving the contribution of professional nursing to healthcare in China and I know that staff at King’s have benefitted from an enhanced international perspective on the shared and unique challenges that nurse educators and students face in both our countries.

This year, we reached a significant milestone in our joint ambition to raise the standard of nursing education in China, and I was delighted to welcome students and teachers from Nanjing Health School onto our BSc and PhD programmes in September.

This booklet celebrates our recent achievements, and considers the impact of our project on education, practice and patient experience. As our project finishes its third year, we at King’s are looking forward to celebrating the centenary of Nanjing Health School and to continuing our work together to achieve new milestones in the year ahead.

When our School was founded in 1918, the initial name was Nursing School of Affiliated Gulou Hospital of Jinling University (now called Nanjing University). This year is our 100-year anniversary since the School was founded. Now our name is Nanjing Health School, offering education in six subjects – Nursing, Midwifery, Rehabilitation, Elderly Care and Management, Medical Imaging and Application of Medical Equipment.

In the past three years, based on our sincere cooperation, we achieved a series of successes in international nursing talent cultivation, nursing education research and training for qualified nurses and staff development. This year, six students and three teachers will go to King’s College London to study the BSc programme and PhD programme respectively.

我校肇始于1918年，原名金陵大学(今南京 大学)附属鼓楼医院护士学校。今年是建校 100周年。现为南京卫生学校，拥有护理、 助产、康复治疗、老年保健与管理、医学影 像、医疗设备应用6个专业。 在过去近三年的合作中，我们双方真诚合 作，在国际护理人才培养、护理教育课程研 究、在职护理人员培训、师资培养等方面都 在实践中取得了成功。今年有6位学生和3 位教师进入伦敦国王学院分别进行本科学位 和博士学位的系统学习与研究。 今后的合作中，我们期待双方在护理实践与 教育的跨文化交流及合作更加深入，更好地 改善护理及护理教育工作与研究水平，为推 动国际护理事业发展探索和创新合作模式。 史献平教授,南京卫生学校校长

The five-year partnership between King’s and Nanjing Health School (NJHS) began in December 2015. It was one of the major collaborations announced by President Xi of China during his visit to the UK that year.

As the UK’s number one nursing faculty (Shanghai Global Rankings of Academic Subjects 2018), the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care at King’s was chosen by the Nanjing Health School as their collaborating partner.

The King’s-Nanjing Health School Collaboration is built around world-class education and best-practice in nursing and midwifery. In both China and the UK, the critical role of nurses in health services is increasingly recognised. Nurses can have a transformative impact on patient care through evidence-based practice.

Over the last three years, King’s has provided consultancy, education and training to help build the Nanjing nursing workforce and will be developing a curriculum that has evidencebased practice at its core. King’s is also working with the Nanjing Health School to establish the Nightingale Nursing College of Nanjing, a major new educational institution.

The third year 2018 第三年 2018 As the third year of our joint achievements draws to a close, my colleagues and I from King’s look back over 2018 with enormous pride. Significant among these is the completion of our first workstream – delivering education and training for qualified nurses and midwives, and welcoming teachers and students from Nanjing onto King’s PhD and BSc programmes.

Our three-week education programme in London in July was fantastic. The enthusiasm and dedication of the Nanjing delegation always brings home to me the power and potential of our collaboration.

I am excited to be joining our colleagues in China to celebrate the centenary of the founding of NJHS and to continue with our ambitions for our project’s fourth year.

I was the Group Leader of the NJHS delegation to London for the annual three-week education programme. This was a very enjoyable and exciting experience for me. King’s reputation and history is amazing. The programme was well organised so that all the participants harvested a lot of information. King’s teaching staff were earnest and helpful, and the group enjoyed their study life in London.

Two of the most important highlights of the third year of our collaboration are the six students who received unconditional offers to study the King’s one-year BSc programme and three young teachers from NJHS admitted on the PhD programme.

The three-week education programme in London Each year in July, a delegation of healthcare educators from Nanjing Health School come to King’s for a three-week education programme.

The programme provides insight into how nursing education is planned and delivered in the UK and how this responds to the healthcare needs of the local population. The learning experience is taken back to Nanjing and applied by delegates in their teaching. These visits also support development of the new NJHS degree-level programme.

During their programme, delegates gain an understanding of UK nursing and midwifery curricula, different methods of teaching and assessment and how this cultivates critical thinking in students.

Activities include touring hospitals, simulation centres and exploring other healthcare settings such as hospices. Staff in the Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care share their knowledge and experience of teaching in the classroom and student learning in the clinical practice environment. There are also opportunities to share the latest techniques in education and practice and find out more about areas of research in the Faculty.

‘A ‘flipped classroom’ is a pedagogical approach that promotes a dynamic and interactive learning environment through a studentcentred learning culture. Prior to attending class, students receive materials prepared by the teacher who holds expertise on the specific topic. Learners can interact with the material in their own time and chosen environment.

This helps to facilitate deeper learning in class through use of active learning strategies such as peer discussions and given problem-solving activities facilitated by teachers.’

Spotlight on: Realising researchenhanced learning

Evidence-based education and practice in nursing is known to deliver better patient care and professional excellence. One of the collaboration’s central aims is to reframe nursing education and practice in China in this context. The new PhD and one-year BSc students at King’s are an important part of realising this vision.

‘I am a teacher working at Nanjing Health School, and I am now also a doctoral student at King’s College London. My research studies will focus on the way of implementing pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) in antenatal and postnatal women. Although PFMT is recommended by The International Consultation on Incontinence and National Institute for Health and Care Excellence as a first-line conservative treatment for Stress Urinary Incontinence and any type of Urinary Incontinence, it is not well implemented in many countries due to the limitation of skilled implementers and the need for financial support. Currently, most PFMT is delivered by one-on-one instruction which made it limited to few women. Group-based intervention is acknowledged as a useful tool in the field of health promotion, and it provides an economical and potential way to implement the guidance. However, it is unknown whether group-based instruction is as effective as oneon-one guidance in implementing PFMT to antenatal and postnatal women. That is why

I intend to find a practical way and realisable interventions to promote health.

Both as a teacher and as the deliverer of health care, I am looking forward to doing meaningful things in health promotion with my knowledge.

This project will help a group of women know about the importance of doing pelvic floor exercise, which may improve their quality of life. It also may provide evidence to clinical experts and policy makers so they can consider implementing this exercise in some way.’

As the collaboration enters its fourth year, there are many exciting developments ahead.

With the completion of work on education and training for qualified nurses, focus continues on the remaining four workstreams.

Following the ground-breaking ceremony in April 2016, construction of the Nightingale Nursing College of Nanjing nears its completion.

‘The main construction of the project in Jiangbei Campus has almost finished. In October 2018, the opening ceremony of the main gate attached to Nightingale Nursing College of Nanjing will be held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of NJHS. In September 2019, Jiangbei Campus will come into service officially.’

In July 2019, healthcare educators from Nanjing will attend the annual three-week education programme in London. In preparation for the new Nightingale Nursing College of Nanjing, work continues on curriculum development and governance and management support. The team at King’s are delighted to be celebrating 100 years since the founding of NJHS with colleagues in China and look forward to bringing more of the collaboration’s milestones to life over the next year.
