Since our inception, you’ve known us as Lunalilo Home and have witnessed, experienced or aided in advancing our work to provide housing, care and meal services for kūpuna. In the last few years, in the aftermath of the COVID pandemic, much has changed about the way we approach kūpuna wellness, and our goals have evolved to support kūpuna in new and expanded ways.

As a result, we’ve reimagined our name and trademark and are humbly reintroducing ourselves as the King Lunalilo Trust.

To advance King Lunalilo’s wish to shelter and support those in need.

As the King Lunalilo Trust, we make room for the exciting transformations underway at our organization and honor our founder, King William Charles Lunalilo, and his legacy and foresight to provide resources to house and shelter those in need.

As a show of our deep aloha and respect, we have taken this as an opportunity to bring King Lunalilo’s monarchical title and countenance into our refreshed brand.

Aloha mai kākou, At King Lunalilo Trust, we’re committed to ensuring that kūpuna have access to the highest quality of compassionate care and support to lead vibrant and fulfilling lives. We’ve advanced this vision for nearly 150 years, instilling our lāhui’s rich culture, values and traditions into everything we do.

Over the years, we’ve experienced much evolution and growth, providing services to kūpuna and their families, creating and implementing strategic plans to guide our work and finding more opportunities to engage with our community and partners throughout ka pae ʻāina.

With a strong foundation, we weathered a pandemic and gained new skills and knowledge needed to propel our organization forward while prioritizing the health and safety of our beneficiaries and employees.

Our efforts have underscored that thriving people are found where living conditions are good; in other words, we need to look at kūpuna wellness holistically. The wellness of kūpuna depends on the health and vibrancy of our ʻohana, our communities and our lāhui. In turn, healthy and vibrant kūpuna give us direct access to the ʻike of our ancestors, through cultural understandings and practices and their mālama and aloha. And it is this ʻike that grounds us in the values and principles that define who we are as ka poʻe o Hawaiʻi.

In the aftermath of the Maui wildfires, protecting our kūpuna and connecting our communities to the ʻike of our kūpuna and our ancestors is more important than ever. Our hearts grieve for the many lives lost, the vast majority of whom were kūpuna. This tragedy has underscored the need for greater focus on safe housing, holistic care and an effort to keep our kūpuna at the physical, social and spiritual center of our communities. When our kūpuna are at the heart of all we do, we begin to understand how our ancestors lived in sustainable harmony with our environment and in pilina with each other.

This is why, with humility and urgency, we share with you all that we’ve achieved to date and preview our goals for the next 150 years in this, our first ever annual report. With this report, we are increasing our accountability and transparency for the benefit of our tremendous community of supporters and beneficiaries.

As we reflect on our years of service and the needs of our lāhui, we share our deep gratitude for your unwavering support, trust and belief in King Lunalilo’s mission. Year after year, you make it possible for our organization to continue building upon our legacy and serve kūpuna and our lāhui in perpetuity, and we look forward to all that lies ahead.

Ka Lawelawe Lokomaikaʻi 140 YEARS OF SERVICE In 1871, before he became king, High Chief Lunalilo signed his last will and testament, which, upon his untimely death, established a perpetual trust, the King Lunalilo Trust.

In his will, he directed the trustees to build a home to accommodate the poor, destitute and infirm people of Hawaiian blood or extraction, with preference given to older people. This was the first time an aliʻi set aside their landholdings in a will to create a charitable trust for the benefit of their people.

Lunalilo established the King Lunalilo Trust to respond to a problem Hawaiʻi had not faced before. After almost 100 years of epidemics that decimated the population and after the decades following the Māhele of 1848, kānaka were more and more becoming dislocated from the ʻāina of their ancestors, and, for the first time, many did not have a home or someone to care for them.

In 1883, the first trustees opened the original Lunalilo Home in Makiki for 53 residents.

The first Lunalilo Home served adult kānaka as young as 25 years old, and many of these younger residents were blind. By the 1920s, Lunalilo Home was renowned as a center for Hawaiian culture, with residents from across the islands sharing cultural practices from their communities.

After 44 years in operation in Makiki, with the help of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Estate and the John Papa ʻĪʻī Brown Estate, the trustees moved Lunalilo Home to our current location on the slopes of Kohelepelepe.

Since our renovation in 2002, we have offered three programs for kūpuna: an adult residential care home, an adult day center and kūpuna meals-to-go, and we have remained firmly committed to King Lunalilo’s vision for Hawaiʻi.

Ka Hoʻohiki Paʻa Mau OUR LASTING COMMITMENT For nearly 140 years, King Lunalilo Trust has served our beneficiaries, kūpuna and their ʻohana.

OUR PROGRAMS LUNALILO HOME Lunalilo Home provides comfortable accommodations and 24-hour supervised care and supportive services for kūpuna residents. Located in Maunalua, the Home’s residential and respite services are guided by a legacy of Native Hawaiian values and cultural practices.

LUNALILO ADULT DAY CENTER Lunalilo Adult Day Center offers a place for kūpuna to spend the day enjoying a safe and socially engaging environment while receiving expert support and hot lunches. Our Adult Day Center gives ʻohana the ability to keep their kūpuna safe while they are at work or school during the day.

LUNALILO MEALS-TO-GO Lunalilo Meals-To-Go prepares and packages local-style, nutritious meals with locallysourced ingredients and fresh herbs and vegetables grown in Lunalilo Home’s garden.

The program accommodates special requests for modified and therapeutic meals to meet each individual’s needs.

OUR IMPACT Over the last five years, from 2018 through 2022, we’ve touched hundreds of lives, including: •

Serving nearly 90 RESIDENT KŪPUNA THROUGH RESPITE SERVICES, almost 40 of which have been Native Hawaiian

Providing more than $2,900,000 IN FINANCIAL SUBSIDY for more than 20 Native Hawaiian resident kūpuna

•

Caring for nearly 80 ADULT DAY CENTER PARTICIPANTS

•

Cooking and distributing more than 165,000 MEALS through our Meals-To-Go service

•

Employing more than 50 EXPERTS in kūpuna care

He Huliau No Lunalilo A TURNING POINT Whole-kūpuna wellness has been our primary focus, understanding that kūpuna require much more than just physical wellness to thrive. Safe and reliable housing, healthy foods, social, cultural and spiritual activities and community and intergenerational interactions are all integral to ensuring kūpuna lead vibrant lives.

To support whole kūpuna wellness, the King Lunalilo Trust is expanding our reach through a new nonprofit affiliate called Nā Pua A Lunalilo. Over the next five years, through this organization, we plan to expand our existing services by launching new offerings across ka pae ʻāina for kūpuna and their ʻohana and communities.

EXPANDED & ENHANCED OFFERINGS INTERMEDIATE NURSING & MEMORY CARE FACILITY will provide a higher level of care for kūpuna with the flexibility to support shortterm rehabilitation and long-term residential care.

Upon completion, the current resident kūpuna of Lunalilo Home will be transferred to the new facility.

ADDITIONAL ADULT DAY CENTERS will provide ʻohana who work or go to school during the day the ability to keep their kūpuna living with them in their homes. After morning drop-off, kūpuna spend the day enjoying a safe and socially engaging environment while receiving expert support and hot lunches. ʻOhana will return in the late afternoon to bring their kūpuna back home for the rest of the day.

NEW PROGRAMS HOME CARE AGENCY will help kūpuna stay in their homes longer. Personal Care Assistants and Nurse Aides will come to kūpuna in their homes to help them with their daily self-care activities, such as household chores and personal grooming and hygiene.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING for kūpuna and ʻohana will create senior or multi-generational housing communities with affordable rents and a suite of on-site support services, cultural resources and activities that draw the surrounding communities to campus.and put kūpuna in the center of community life.

ADDITIONAL KITCHENS will ensure ʻohana and kūpuna have the option to receive locally-prepared, local-style hot or frozen meals-to-go that are tailored to their health care needs.

Nā Hōʻike Waiwai OUR FINANCIAL RESULTS FOR 2022 AND 2021 We’ve continued to invest deeply in kūpuna and their ʻohana while navigating numerous financial challenges brought on as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the highest inflation rates in more than 40 years, the tightest labor market in nearly 50 years, rising interest rates and the war in eastern Europe.

Amid these challenges, we hired our new Chief Executive Officer, Keolamaikalani Dean, who led an extensive review of our organizational vision and mission, our strategic advantages and disadvantages, and the larger environment in which we operate.
